Short answer: inspect the application’s own code, binaries, packages, launch configuration, and vendor requirements for enclave creation and SGX runtime integration. Do not infer application dependence from an SGX-capable processor or from SGX being enabled: Intel’s status APIs describe the platform, not whether a particular program uses it.
What you are actually trying to prove
“Does this application require Intel SGX?” can mean three different things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Built with SGX integration: the application or one of its components creates, loads, or communicates with an enclave.
- Deployed through an SGX runtime: the program is packaged with the Intel SGX runtime, a custom enclave runtime, or a LibOS that places an otherwise ordinary application inside an enclave.
- Runnable on this computer: the current processor, firmware, operating system, drivers, and SGX configuration permit enclave execution.
The first two answer application dependency. The third answers machine capability. Intel explicitly separates these questions: its platform-status functions can indicate capability or enablement, but a positive result does not prove that your application uses SGX. Intel’s support article states, “If Intel® SGX is fully enabled, the application can make enclave calls,” which describes what the platform permits, not what every application requires (Intel’s SGX status guidance).

The deployment uses Intel’s common runtime for a custom enclave configuration. | Strong clue; confirm how the component is launched |
| Enclave artifacts, signing/build outputs, or SGX-specific launch settings | The package contains an enclave-oriented deployment path. | Strong clue, especially when the artifact is loaded at runtime |
| A LibOS or wrapper configured to run the application in an enclave | The original application may contain no visible SGX calls while the deployment still depends on SGX. | Strong deployment evidence |
| An SGX-capable or SGX-enabled computer | The platform may be able to execute enclave calls. | Platform evidence only; not proof of application dependence |
Package names and required components vary with the use case, Linux distribution, platform environment, and runtime. Intel’s Linux software-package guide distinguishes application users from developers and warns that the required package set depends on how the enclave software is built and deployed.
Step 1: Define the exact application and deployment
Start with the executable that actually runs, not merely the installer name. Record the application version, operating system, CPU architecture, installation directory, and whether it runs directly, in a container, inside a virtual machine, or through a service manager. A vendor can ship multiple builds: one may use an enclave while another uses a conventional execution path.
- Identify the process or service that handles the sensitive operation.
- List bundled shared libraries, plugins, helper processes, and sidecar services.
- Note whether a launcher script sets environment variables, selects a configuration file, or starts a wrapper before the main executable.
- Capture the vendor’s system-requirements and deployment documentation for the same release.
Dependency can belong to a helper rather than the visible user interface. Check the complete process tree and package contents before deciding that an application is independent.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 2: Inspect source code and build files
If source is available, search the code and build system for enclave creation and trusted-runtime integration. Intel’s Windows developer reference identifies sgx_create_enclave as the uRTS call used to create and initialize an enclave before trusted transactions (Intel SGX SDK Developer Reference for Windows).
Search for:
sgx_create_enclaveand related enclave lifecycle calls.- Build targets that produce, sign, or package enclave code.
- Trusted and untrusted source trees, enclave configuration files, and generated metadata.
- Linker settings or dependency declarations for SGX runtime libraries.
- Conditional build flags that select SGX, simulation, or ordinary execution.
A direct call is compelling evidence that a code path uses SGX, but absence of a visible call is not conclusive. A wrapper, dynamically loaded component, custom runtime, or LibOS can hide the integration from the application’s main source tree.
Step 3: Examine binaries and package manifests
For a Linux installation, inspect the executable and its shared-library dependencies. Standard tools can reveal names embedded in a binary or libraries resolved at launch; for example, run ldd /path/to/application for a dynamically linked executable and search package manifests or installation metadata for SGX runtime names. Treat the output as evidence about that specific file, not as a universal detector.

The most useful Intel runtime indicators are:
Intel SGX SDK applications
Intel identifies libsgx-urts as the untrusted runtime used with Intel SGX SDK enclaves. If the process that performs the protected operation links to or loads this library, the deployment has a direct SDK-runtime dependency. Verify that the library belongs to the application’s active execution path rather than an unused development component.
Custom-runtime enclaves
Intel identifies libsgx-enclave-common for enclaves using a custom runtime configuration. Finding this library points to an enclave-capable component, but you still need to establish which service loads it and whether that path is mandatory or optional.
These package indicators come from Intel’s Linux installation guide. The guide separates application-user installation from development and software-stack development, so do not assume that every package listed for developers is required by an end-user deployment.
Windows binaries
On Windows, inspect the executable’s imported libraries, adjacent runtime files, service configuration, and installer payload. Look for the SGX SDK runtime and enclave artifacts named by the application’s own documentation. A static build, delayed loading, or a wrapper process can make a simple import-list check incomplete; correlate binary findings with launch behavior and vendor instructions.
Step 4: Look for enclave artifacts and launch configuration
Generated enclave artifacts are often more informative than a product name. Inspect the installation and deployment directories for files explicitly identified in the application’s documentation as enclave images, signed enclave outputs, enclave configuration, or trusted-code packages. Do not assume that a file is an enclave merely because its name contains “secure” or “trusted”; confirm its role in the build or launch configuration.

- Environment variables selecting SGX or simulation mode.
- Device, driver, or runtime mounts required by the deployment.
- Separate trusted and untrusted processes or helper services.
- Documentation stating that the application must run on SGX-enabled hardware.
A package can contain SGX support without requiring it for every mode. Record whether the SGX path is mandatory, selected only by a flag, or used as an optional acceleration or protection feature.
Step 5: Identify the runtime model
Knowing the runtime model prevents false negatives. Intel’s Linux documentation distinguishes SDK-based enclaves managed through libsgx-urts from custom-configuration enclaves using libsgx-enclave-common. Other trusted runtimes can place their dependencies elsewhere.
SDK-managed enclave
An SDK-managed application commonly has a visible untrusted host component, an enclave component, and a call that creates the enclave before trusted transactions. Confirm the runtime library, enclave artifact, and initialization path belong to the same release.

Custom trusted runtime
A custom runtime may not follow the SDK’s project layout or expose the same source-level calls. Use its package manifest, launch configuration, and vendor deployment instructions to identify the component responsible for enclave creation.
LibOS deployment
A LibOS such as Gramine can protect an existing application in an SGX enclave with little or no application modification. In that model, searching only the application’s source or main binary can miss the dependency. Inspect the LibOS configuration, signing or measurement workflow, wrapper command, and container or service definition. Intel’s SGX overview and getting-started material provide background on SGX development and deployment models (Intel SGX overview).
Step 6: Verify the vendor’s requirements for the exact version
Read the release-specific installation and operations documentation. Look for statements such as “requires SGX,” “runs in an enclave,” “SGX platform required,” or separate instructions for hardware and simulation. A vendor requirement is especially valuable when the binary is stripped, statically linked, or wrapped by another runtime.

Confirm whether the requirement applies to:
- All installations or only a hardened, confidential-computing edition.
- Production hardware or only development and test builds.
- The main application or a particular plugin, service, or feature.
- Native execution, a container image, or a virtual-machine appliance.
Intel’s public package guidance notes that components vary by application use case and platform. Therefore, a missing package on one machine does not prove that the application has no SGX deployment path, and an installed package does not prove that the program uses it every time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to check whether SGX is enabled on the computer
This is a separate platform-status investigation. Intel documents APIs including sgx_is_capable(), sgx_cap_enable_device(), sgx_cap_get_status(), and sgx_enable_device() for checking capability, reading status, and performing enablement workflows. These functions answer whether the platform can support or has enabled SGX; they do not inspect an arbitrary application’s dependency graph (Intel’s status API guidance).
Interpret a status result this way:
- SGX capable: the platform reports support, subject to the operating system and firmware configuration.
- SGX enabled: the platform is configured so an application can make enclave calls.
- Not capable or unavailable: this machine cannot provide the required execution environment, or the relevant support is not exposed.
None of those outcomes establishes that a particular application is SGX-dependent. Conversely, a disabled platform does not prove the application lacks SGX support; it may simply be unable to exercise that path on the current computer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Simulation, development, and hardware execution
Intel’s Windows SDK getting-started guide, updated in 2017, explains that development and building can be possible on a machine without SGX when simulation mode is used, while actual hardware execution requires a supported execution system (Intel’s Windows SGX SDK guide). Because that guide is dated, use it to understand the distinction between modes rather than as a current compatibility matrix.
When you find a simulation switch, classify it carefully:
- A simulation build demonstrates that developers can test enclave-facing logic without hardware SGX.
- It does not demonstrate that production can run without SGX.
- A package supporting both modes may have an SGX-dependent production path and a non-SGX development path.
Check the current release documentation for supported processors, operating-system versions, firmware settings, and runtime components before making a compatibility decision.
Best Value
Decision procedure: from clues to a defensible conclusion
- Identify the executed component. Write down the exact executable, service, helper, container image, or VM appliance involved in the feature you care about.
- Search its source or symbols. Look for
sgx_create_enclave, trusted-runtime calls, enclave build targets, and SGX-specific conditionals. - Inspect runtime dependencies. On Linux, check for
libsgx-urts,libsgx-enclave-common, or the runtime named by the vendor. On Windows, inspect imported or bundled runtime components. - Locate artifacts and configuration. Find the enclave output, signing configuration, wrapper, launch flag, container setting, or service definition that activates the SGX path.
- Check for a LibOS or custom runtime. If the application source is ordinary, inspect the enclosing runtime and deployment files.
- Read version-specific requirements. Confirm whether SGX is mandatory, optional, or limited to a particular feature or build.
- Check platform status independently. Use the documented status APIs or the operating system’s supported administration workflow to determine whether this computer can execute the path.
- Corroborate. Conclude “depends on SGX” only when application or deployment evidence shows that the required production path needs an enclave. Record platform status as a separate result.
Common ambiguous results and how to resolve them
The machine reports SGX enabled, but no SGX files are visible
That result answers only the platform question. Recheck helper processes, containers, VM images, and optional plugins, then consult the exact application release documentation.
The package contains an SGX library, but the program starts normally when SGX is unavailable
The library may support an optional feature, a fallback mode, or an unused tool. Trace which process loads it and test the specific feature or deployment mode documented by the vendor. Do not label the entire application SGX-dependent from an unused library alone.
No direct sgx_create_enclave call appears in source
Inspect dynamically loaded modules, custom runtimes, and LibOS configuration. Lack of a visible call is not conclusive when enclave creation occurs in a wrapper or runtime layer.
A Linux package is missing
Package requirements differ by runtime, distribution, platform, and use case. Compare the installed version with Intel’s package guidance and the application’s own deployment instructions before treating the missing package as proof of independence.
The Windows SDK works in simulation
Simulation proves only that a development path exists without SGX hardware. Verify the production mode and current hardware-support requirements separately.
Record your findings
A short evidence record makes the result reproducible when the application is upgraded or moved to another host. Capture:
- Application and component versions.
- Operating system, architecture, and deployment form.
- Relevant source symbols or build flags.
- Runtime libraries and package versions.
- Enclave artifacts and launch configuration paths.
- Vendor documentation URL and the requirement wording.
- Platform capability and enablement result, recorded separately.
- Whether the conclusion applies to all features or only one execution mode.
Use precise conclusions such as “the production service loads an SGX runtime and requires an enclave-capable host,” “the package contains optional SGX support,” or “the host supports SGX, but application dependence was not established.” Avoid the broader claim that SGX is required unless the application evidence and deployment requirements support it.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you
Application-specific artifacts, runtime dependencies, and deployment instructions can establish that a program was designed to use SGX and can reveal whether a particular production path requires it. Platform APIs can establish that the computer is capable of, or configured for, enclave calls. Neither category substitutes for the other.
Intel’s official SGX materials describe the technology and SDKs, including the Linux SDK overview and SGX getting-started resources. Use those references together with the application vendor’s release-specific instructions, because runtime packages, operating-system support, and deployment models change over time.
