Windows long-path support depends on two separate opt-ins: the system setting LongPathsEnabled must be enabled, and the application’s embedded manifest must declare longPathAware as true. Both conditions are required for the documented Win32 behavior. You should then test the exact operation that matters—opening, saving, copying, or renaming—because a declaration in the manifest does not certify every feature, dependency, plug-in, or shell interaction.
This guide shows how to check each condition, how to test an application safely, and how to interpret cases where Windows is configured correctly but the app still fails.

The short answer: check Windows, check the app, then test the workflow
There is no single Windows switch that proves an individual program supports long paths. Use this three-part check:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Verify the Windows opt-in. Inspect
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystemLongPathsEnabled. Microsoft documents aREG_DWORDvalue of1. - Verify the application opt-in. Inspect the executable’s embedded application manifest for
<ws2:longPathAware>true</ws2:longPathAware>. - Run the real operation. Use a disposable path beyond the traditional limit and perform the specific action that failed in the same application and workflow.
Microsoft’s official wording is direct: “However, your app must opt-in to the new behavior.” The registry value alone therefore cannot establish support. Conversely, a manifest declaration cannot prove that every code path used by the application is compatible.

The documented behavior applies to Windows 10, version 1607, and later, and only to applications that opt in. Microsoft’s reference page was last updated on July 16, 2024: Maximum Path Length Limitation.
What “long path” means in Windows
Traditional Win32 applications commonly encountered a MAX_PATH limit of 260 characters, including the terminating null character in Microsoft’s example. Windows 10 version 1607 and later removed that restriction from many common Win32 file and directory functions, but the change is opt-in rather than automatic.
That distinction explains many apparently contradictory reports. Two programs running on the same computer can receive the same path and behave differently: one may have opted in and complete the operation, while another still rejects the path. Even within one program, a file-open action may succeed while a shell-based browse, plug-in, or other internal component fails.
Microsoft lists affected Win32 functions such as CreateFileW, CopyFileW, DeleteFileW, and CreateDirectoryW. The list describes API behavior when the application is configured correctly; it is not an end-to-end certification for a particular product’s user interface or all of its dependencies. Microsoft also cautions that a path created through the Windows API may not be interpreted correctly by the shell interface.
Check the Windows long-path setting
Inspect the registry value
The documented machine-wide setting is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystemLongPathsEnabled
Open Registry Editor with an account permitted to view the local-machine hive, navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, and FileSystem, and locate LongPathsEnabled. Confirm that its type is REG_DWORD and its data is 0x00000001 (1).

You can query the same value from Command Prompt:
reg query "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem" /v LongPathsEnabled
A result showing LongPathsEnabled with data 0x1 means the documented system opt-in is enabled. A value of 0, a missing value, or an inability to read the key means this check has not passed. Do not treat an absent value as proof that an application cannot support long paths; it means the machine-level opt-in is not currently established.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck Group Policy when the registry does not tell the whole story
Organizations can control the setting through Group Policy. The policy path is:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > Enable Win32 long paths
On a managed computer, review the policy’s effective state rather than changing a local value and assuming it will remain in force. A domain policy can reapply settings, and a policy-managed configuration may be the authoritative source for the device.
Consider Microsoft Intune management
Microsoft also documents controlling the setting through the Intune Policy Configuration Service Provider. If the computer is enrolled and centrally managed, ask the administrator to verify the effective device policy. The registry value is still useful as an observation, but it may be overwritten by management policy.
Restart the application after changing the setting
Do not test an already-running process immediately after changing the value. Microsoft states that the setting is cached per process after the first call to an affected Win32 file or directory function and is not reloaded during that process’s lifetime. Close every instance of the application, confirm that it is no longer running, reopen it, and then repeat the test. A background helper or tray process may also need to be closed if it performs the file operation on the application’s behalf.

Check the application’s embedded manifest
Find the long-path declaration
The application-side opt-in is an XML element in the manifest embedded in the executable. The documented form is:
<application xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v3">
<windowsSettings xmlns:ws2="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SMI/2016/WindowsSettings">
<ws2:longPathAware>true</ws2:longPathAware>
</windowsSettings>
</application>
Use a manifest inspection tool that can display the embedded XML, or obtain the application’s signed executable and inspect its embedded manifest with your normal Windows development or administration tooling. Search for the longPathAware element in the Windows settings section. The value must be true; an absent element or a false value does not satisfy the documented opt-in.
Microsoft’s application-manifest documentation describes this declaration and its namespace details here: Application manifests. The element is supported beginning with Windows 10, version 1607.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect the executable that actually runs
Check the executable launched by the shortcut, file association, service, or script involved in the failure. A launcher can start a different binary from the one you inspected, and an application may hand file work to a helper process. If the operation occurs in a plug-in, updater, synchronization component, or separate command-line utility, inspect that component too when it is responsible for opening or writing the path.
Do not confuse an external manifest with proof of complete support
An external or edited manifest may not describe the signed binary that users normally run, and changing a vendor-supplied executable can invalidate its signature or servicing assumptions. For diagnosis, establish what the distributed executable contains. For software you develop, place the declaration in the application manifest used to build and deploy the program, then verify the resulting executable.
Test the operation that matters
Prepare a disposable test path
Create a temporary test folder and make its full path substantially longer than the traditional boundary. Nest folders with descriptive but short names until the complete path is clearly beyond that boundary. Keep the test data disposable and avoid placing it in a production, synchronized, or backup-critical directory.

Record the complete path and its character count with a method available on the computer. The count must include the drive or share prefix, every backslash, every folder name, and the file name. A path that looks deep in a folder tree can still be short if the names are brief; conversely, a few long folder names can consume the available length quickly.

Run the exact action in the application:
- For an editor, use its Open and Save dialogs, not only a command-line copy.
- For an archive or backup program, add a file from the long path and restore or extract one to it.
- For a file manager, try browsing into the folder, copying a file, renaming it, and deleting the disposable copy.
- For a developer tool, run the build, checkout, package, or export operation that originally produced the error.
Test both a read and a write when the application is expected to support both. An application can successfully enumerate or open a path while failing when it creates, renames, or deletes an item. Capture the exact error text, the operation, and the path used; those details are more useful than a general statement that “long paths are enabled.”
Retest after restarting
If you changed the registry or policy immediately before testing, restart the application first. If a service or helper process performs the operation, restart that process according to your organization’s procedures. Do not alter the test path between attempts unless you are deliberately isolating a different condition.
Interpret the results with a two-condition matrix
| Windows setting | Manifest declaration | What the result means | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disabled or not established | Absent or false | Neither documented opt-in is present. | Enable the machine or policy setting, then determine whether the application can be updated to include the declaration. |
| Enabled | Absent or false | Windows is prepared, but this application has not opted in. | Look for a newer application build or ask the software publisher whether long paths are supported; do not assume a registry edit will change the binary’s behavior. |
| Disabled or not established | True | The application declares support, but the system prerequisite is not satisfied. | Have the administrator enable the documented setting through the applicable registry, Group Policy, or Intune configuration, then restart the process. |
| Enabled | True | Both documented conditions are present. | Run the real operation. A failure now points to the specific workflow, API usage, dependency, or shell interaction rather than proving that the two opt-ins are ineffective. |
| Enabled | True | The test succeeds for one action but fails for another. | Treat the actions as separate code paths and isolate the failing component; support is not necessarily uniform across the application. |
This matrix separates configuration from compatibility. The observed result in the application is the final diagnostic evidence for the workflow you care about; neither a registry screenshot nor a manifest excerpt substitutes for that test.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an enabled setting can still fail
The process has cached the old value
A process that was running when the registry value changed can continue using the cached state. Close and reopen the application, and include helper processes that may have made an earlier file-system call.

The visible application may delegate file work to a plug-in, service, updater, command-line tool, or other library. Inspect and test the component that actually performs the operation. The main executable’s manifest does not automatically establish the behavior of every process it starts.
Best Value
The application uses a path-handling route outside the documented scope
Microsoft’s list concerns specific Win32 file and directory APIs. An application may use additional libraries or abstractions that impose their own validation or length assumptions. A manifest declaration does not rewrite those libraries or guarantee that every internal feature calls an affected API.
The Windows shell is involved
Microsoft notes that a path created through the Windows API may not be interpreted correctly by the shell interface. A programmatic copy can therefore succeed while a shell browse, context-menu action, or drag-and-drop operation fails on the same location. Compare the application’s own file dialog and API-driven action with the shell action instead of treating them as equivalent tests.
The test did not reproduce the original operation
Opening a file is not the same as saving it, and copying is not the same as renaming or deleting. Reproduce the original sequence, permissions, and destination type as closely as possible while keeping the data disposable. If only one action fails, report that action specifically.

- Write down the failing action. Record whether it is open, save, create, copy, rename, delete, browse, extract, synchronize, or another operation.
- Measure the complete path. Include every character from the drive or share prefix through the file name, and preserve the exact path for testing.
- Check
LongPathsEnabled. Use Registry Editor orreg query; note whether the value is aREG_DWORDset to1. - Check effective policy. Review
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Filesystem > Enable Win32 long pathsor ask the Intune administrator for the effective device configuration. - Identify the responsible executable. Follow the shortcut, association, service, or helper process that performs the file operation.
- Inspect its embedded manifest. Confirm the exact
longPathAwaredeclaration and its value oftrue. - Restart the responsible process. This removes the cached per-process setting described by Microsoft.
- Reproduce the operation on a disposable long path. Test the same read or write workflow, not merely a different file action.
- Compare results by component. If the application succeeds but the shell fails, record that distinction. If one feature succeeds and another fails, isolate the feature rather than labeling the whole application compatible or incompatible.
What administrators and developers should document
For a support ticket or deployment record, capture the Windows edition and version, the effective policy source, the registry value, the executable path and version, the manifest result, the exact operation, the measured path length, and the complete error message. This prevents a machine-level setting from being mistaken for an application certification.
Developers should test the APIs and workflows they actually ship, including creation, opening, copying, deletion, and directory operations where applicable. A manifest declaration is necessary for the documented Windows behavior but does not replace testing of dependencies, user-interface code, plug-ins, or shell integration. If an application creates a path successfully through a Win32 API, test how users will subsequently reach that path through the intended interface.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
LongPathsEnabledexists as aREG_DWORDwith value1, or the equivalent effective policy is enabled.- The executable that performs the operation contains
longPathAwareset totrue. - The process was restarted after any configuration change.
- The test path is disposable and clearly exceeds the traditional boundary.
- The exact failing operation was reproduced, including both read and write actions when relevant.
- Shell behavior, helper processes, dependencies, and individual application features were evaluated separately.
