How to Check Whether an Android Phone Will Receive Security Updates

To check an Android phone’s security status, first open Settings → About phone → Android version and record the Android security update date. Then check the separate Google Play system update date, Android version and build number. Finally, use the exact model number, region and carrier variant to find the manufacturer’s current support policy or supported-device list. The patch date shows what is installed today; only the manufacturer’s model-specific policy can establish whether more security updates are promised.

1. Identify the exact phone before checking support

Support commitments apply to a particular model, not simply to a product family or the name shown in advertising. Open Settings → About phone and write down the full model name and model number. If the phone was sold by a mobile carrier, record that carrier as well. Manufacturers may publish different schedules for a carrier edition, an unlocked edition and devices sold in different countries.

Record the identifiers that affect the answer

  • Model name and number: Use the complete entry shown in About phone, including suffixes or regional codes.
  • Country or market: Note where the phone was purchased or is currently registered.
  • Carrier: A carrier-branded device can receive firmware on a different schedule from an unlocked model.
  • Android version: This identifies the operating-system release currently installed.
  • Build number: Keep it with your notes; it helps support staff and manufacturer pages distinguish variants.

Do not rely on a shortened name such as a series name when checking a support list. Two phones with nearly identical names can have different update commitments or different delivery schedules.

2. Find the security patch that is installed now

On most Android phones, go to Settings → About phone → Android version. Google’s Android guidance says this screen displays the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update and build number. Manufacturer interfaces can use slightly different wording, but the About phone and Android version areas contain these details on supported devices.

Understand each date and number

Item shown in Settings What it tells you How to use it
Android security update The date of the device’s installed security patch level Compare this date with the manufacturer’s published release cadence and the date currently offered by the update screen.
Google Play system update The separate update level for Google Play system components Record it separately. It is not the same field as the manufacturer’s full firmware security patch.
Android version The operating-system release running on the phone Use it to describe the software state, but do not treat an Android-version upgrade as proof of a particular security-update commitment.
Build number The precise software build installed Keep it when contacting the manufacturer or carrier about a missing update.

Report the two update dates separately. A recent Google Play system date does not, by itself, prove that the phone has received the latest manufacturer security fixes, and an older Android version does not automatically mean that security support has ended.

3. Check whether an update is available

Use the system update control after recording the current patch level. On many phones the path is Settings → System → Software updates; another manufacturer may place the control under a differently named Software update or System update menu.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Open System, or the manufacturer’s equivalent software-update section.
  3. Choose Software updates or the matching update command.
  4. Read the result, including the offered security patch date, Android version and build number.
  5. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen installation and restart instructions. After the phone restarts, return to About phone → Android version and verify the new security-update date.

The label and exact path vary across manufacturers and Android versions. If the update screen says the phone is current, that means no update is presently available through that channel; it does not establish the phone’s lifetime support end date.

4. Verify future support using the manufacturer’s live policy

The installed patch is historical evidence. Future support is a policy question, so search the manufacturer’s current security-update page or model-support page using the exact model number and, where relevant, the country and carrier. Look for four items:

  • Guaranteed duration: How long the manufacturer promises security updates, and what event starts the clock.
  • End date: A published final date is more useful than a general statement such as “long-term support.”
  • Cadence: Whether the model is listed for monthly, quarterly, biannual or another release cycle.
  • Delivery qualifications: Any warning that timing depends on market, network provider, carrier or model.

Use the live list rather than an old article. Support scopes change when regular support periods expire, and a model can move out of a monthly or quarterly category without the phone’s marketing name changing.

How to read a support policy

Check whether the clock starts at first sale, first availability in a particular country, initial ship date or another event. A promise of five years is incomplete until you know that starting point. Also check whether the page describes security patches, Android-version upgrades or both. Some policies place the two commitments in separate columns or sentences.

Save the policy page, the date you checked it and the exact model entry. A live support list can change as devices leave a regular-support category. Keeping a dated note helps when you are troubleshooting a delayed rollout, buying a used phone or deciding when to replace a device.

Google Pixel terms are model-specific

Google’s Pixel support page states that Pixel 8 and later phones, including Pixel 8a, receive seven years of operating-system and security updates. The seven-year period starts when each model first became available on the Google Store in the United States. This is a published commitment for those models, not a rule for every Android manufacturer.

The same page places Pixel 7, Pixel 6, Pixel Fold and other listed models in a five-year operating-system and security-update period, also counted from first United States Google Store availability. Pixel 5a and earlier models listed on that page no longer receive Android-version updates or security updates. Check the specific model entry because the groups have different start dates and end points.

Samsung uses changing security-update scopes

Samsung’s Mobile Security page lists devices under monthly, quarterly and biannual security-update scopes. Samsung states that availability and timing may vary by market, network provider and model. The monthly list changes as regular support periods expire, so a Galaxy device’s current category must be checked on the live page rather than inferred from another Galaxy model.

Samsung describes its maintenance releases as containing patches from Google and Samsung. Its page includes an October 2026 release entry dated October 2, 2026. That date identifies a release entry; it is not evidence that every supported device received the update on October 2.

Enterprise requirements have a defined scope

For the applicable Android Enterprise Recommended device category, Google’s enterprise documentation requires original equipment manufacturers to publish security-update information, including fixes and a guaranteed end date. The stated requirement is 90-day security-update information and support for five years from the initial ship date. This requirement applies to that specified enterprise category and should not be generalized to all consumer Android phones.

5. Interpret a missing or late patch correctly

Android updates are not released to every device at the same moment. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and depend on the device and operator; arrival can take a few weeks. Google’s general Android guidance likewise says update schedules vary by device, manufacturer and mobile carrier.

Consequently, one missing monthly patch is not enough to conclude that support has ended. First compare the phone’s model and variant with the manufacturer’s current support list. Then check whether the published cadence allows a quarterly or biannual release, and whether the carrier or market is known to receive updates later.

Use this decision path

  1. The phone is listed as supported and its patch is only recently behind: Check the update screen again later because the rollout may still be progressing.
  2. The phone is listed as supported but remains substantially behind: Confirm that the model number, region and carrier match the support entry. Contact the carrier or manufacturer with the build number if the variant is correct and no update appears.
  3. The phone is absent from the current support list: Look for a published support end date or an expired support category. Absence from a list is more meaningful when the manufacturer explains how the list is maintained.
  4. The model has passed its stated end date: Treat the device as outside the manufacturer’s promised security-update period, even if it still works and still receives occasional Google Play system updates.

Common reasons an update does not appear

A rollout can be staged by operator or market, so another owner of the same model may see it first. A carrier edition may also use a different approval path from an unlocked phone. The phone can therefore show an older patch while remaining inside its promised support period. Before resetting the device or installing unofficial firmware, verify the official model entry and ask the carrier or manufacturer about the exact build.

6. Distinguish security patches from Android upgrades

An Android-version upgrade changes the operating-system release. A security patch level records a set of security fixes applied to the device firmware and system components. Manufacturers may describe these commitments separately, so do not count an operating-system upgrade as an extra security-support year unless the policy explicitly does so.

When comparing two phones, record the security-update commitment and the operating-system-upgrade commitment as separate facts. A phone can receive a new Android version while approaching the end of its security-support period, or continue receiving security patches without receiving every later Android version.

7. Compare two phones using published evidence

If you are deciding whether to keep a phone or replace it, compare the following fields from each manufacturer’s current documentation:

Comparison field What to record Why it matters
Guaranteed security duration The number of years and the event that starts the clock A duration without a defined start date cannot tell you when support ends.
Published end date The model’s stated final support date, when provided It gives you a concrete point for planning a replacement or risk review.
Model specificity The exact model, storage or regional variant and carrier edition covered Brand-level promises can be narrower than they appear.
Expected cadence Monthly, quarterly, biannual or another listed scope A quarterly schedule should not be judged by a monthly expectation.
Delivery caveats Market, network-provider and carrier qualifications These explain why two otherwise identical phones may receive a patch at different times.
Separate OS and security terms Each commitment independently It prevents an operating-system upgrade promise from being mistaken for a security-patch promise.

Do not rank devices on an unverified promise, a retailer description or the date shown on another model. Use the manufacturer’s current policy for the exact phone you would buy.

Questions to ask before buying used

Ask for a screenshot of About phone showing the model number, Android security update and build number. Then match those details to the manufacturer’s current list, not merely to the seller’s statement that the phone is “updated.” A low purchase price does not compensate for a model that has already passed its published security end date.

8. What to do when support has ended

Once the published security-support period has expired, the phone may continue to operate, but you no longer have the manufacturer’s stated commitment to future security fixes. Avoid treating a new Google Play system date as a replacement for full firmware support; the two update streams are reported separately and the available information does not establish that one substitutes for the other.

If you need a supported device, compare replacement models by their documented duration, start date and delivery qualifications. Google’s published terms make Pixel 8a one example with a seven-year operating-system and security-update period from first United States Google Store availability. That example is a policy reference, not a blanket recommendation; confirm the exact model, regional terms and current availability before purchasing.

9. A repeatable check you can save

  1. Open Settings → About phone and copy the exact model name and number.
  2. Record the region and carrier variant if the manufacturer distinguishes them.
  3. Open About phone → Android version and record the Android security update date, Google Play system update date, Android version and build number.
  4. Open the device’s Software updates screen and note whether an update is offered, including its patch date and build.
  5. Find the manufacturer’s current security-update policy or supported-device list for that exact model.
  6. Write down the promised duration, start date, end date if published, cadence and any market or carrier qualification.
  7. If the phone is behind, allow for gradual rollout and verify the variant before deciding that support has ended.

This record gives you both halves of the answer: what protection is installed today and what the manufacturer has committed to deliver in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my Android security patch level?

Open Settings → About phone → Android version and read the Android security update field. Record the Google Play system update separately, because it is a different update stream.

Google Pixel 8a, 128GB, Bay - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 8a designed with a 6.1-inch Actua OLED display, delivering improved brightness, enhanced outdoor visibility, and smoother color rendering in a compact and lightweight form factor.

How do I know whether my phone is still getting security updates?

Identify the exact model number, region and carrier edition, then match them to the manufacturer’s current security-update policy or supported-device list. Check the stated cadence and end date rather than relying only on the patch currently installed.

Why is my phone behind when another owner has a newer patch?

Rollouts can be gradual and can vary by device, operator, market or carrier. Confirm that your model is supported, check whether its cadence is monthly, quarterly or biannual, and contact the carrier or manufacturer with the build number if the delay persists.

Does a recent Google Play system update mean the phone is fully supported?

No. Android security updates and Google Play system updates appear as separate fields. A recent Play system date does not by itself establish that the manufacturer is still providing full firmware security patches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do Android version upgrades count as security updates?

They are separate commitments unless the manufacturer’s policy explicitly combines them. A phone may receive an Android-version upgrade without gaining another year of security support, or receive security patches without every later Android version.

What does it mean if my model disappears from a Samsung security-update list?

Check the live page for an expired support period, a published end date or a move from monthly to quarterly or biannual scope. Confirm the exact model and region before concluding that support has ended.

The Bottom Line

Check the installed Android security patch under About phone → Android version, check for an available system update, and then verify the exact model’s future support on the manufacturer’s current policy page. Include the region and carrier, keep Google Play system updates separate, and treat gradual rollouts as a timing issue rather than immediate proof that support has ended.
