Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo check an Android phone for a U.S. carrier, use that carrier’s official bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker with the phone’s exact IMEI. Then verify the result, confirm the phone is unlocked, and check whether you will activate with a physical SIM or eSIM. An “unlocked” label alone does not prove that the handset will work on your chosen network.
What “compatible” means
Compatibility is destination-specific. A phone can be unlocked yet lack the hardware, software support, or carrier features required by the network you want to use. Conversely, a model that works on one carrier may receive a different result on another because carriers use different network configurations and eligibility databases.

The practical question is therefore not “Is this Android phone unlocked?” but “Will this exact handset, identified by its IMEI, activate and provide the capabilities I need on my intended carrier?” The carrier’s own checker is the best first answer because it evaluates the device against that carrier’s current systems.

Gather the details before you check
Have these items ready:
- The exact handset: Record the manufacturer, model name, model number, storage variant if shown, and software version. Similar-looking phones can contain different internal technology.
- The IMEI: Most carrier checkers identify the device by its 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity number. Dual-SIM phones may show more than one IMEI; use the one requested by the checker and keep the other available.
- Unlock information: Know which carrier originally sold or financed the phone. If the checker cannot confirm that the device is unlocked, you may need that original carrier to remove the network lock.
- SIM choice: Decide whether you intend to use a physical SIM or eSIM. Basic network eligibility and SIM or eSIM activation are related but separate checks.
- Your target carrier: Run the check on the carrier where you will actually activate service. A generic “works with carriers” claim is not a substitute for a destination-carrier result.
Find your Android phone’s IMEI
Use Android settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (sometimes shown as About device).
- Look for IMEI, IMEI information, or a similar device-identification entry.
- Copy the number exactly. If the phone lists IMEI 1 and IMEI 2, note both and identify which SIM slot you plan to use.
Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android software version. If your phone does not use this path, search Settings for “IMEI” or follow the device maker’s instructions.

Use the dial code
Open the phone app and dial *#06#. The device should display its IMEI information. Verizon’s official guidance lists this method as well as the Settings path. Do not add spaces or punctuation when entering the number into a carrier form.
Check the physical device and packaging
The IMEI may also be printed on the original box, a SIM tray, or a label supplied with the phone. Treat those as cross-checks. If the number shown by the phone differs from a box or receipt, use the handset’s displayed IMEI and ask the seller or original carrier to resolve the discrepancy before activation.
Run the destination carrier’s BYOD check
- Go to the intended carrier’s official BYOD or device-compatibility page.
- Choose the option for checking an existing phone or bringing your own device.
- Enter the requested IMEI. Verizon’s checker requests a 15-digit IMEI.
- Submit the check and save the result, including any wording about partial support, blocking, unlock status, or eSIM.
- If the page asks for an EID, retrieve it from the phone’s SIM or network settings and submit it for the eSIM-specific check.
T-Mobile describes its IMEI check as an evaluation of the phone’s network capabilities and whether it is unlocked. Verizon’s checker likewise uses the IMEI to determine BYOD eligibility. Use the current checker rather than relying on a forum post, an old compatibility list, or a result from another carrier.
Interpret the result instead of treating it as a simple yes or no
Carrier databases can return more than two outcomes. T-Mobile’s guidance distinguishes several categories, and each calls for a different next step.
| Result or wording | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible / full compatibility | The IMEI matches a device the carrier can support under its current eligibility rules. | Confirm the phone is unlocked, choose physical SIM or eSIM, and proceed to activation. Check that the features you require are supported. |
| Partial compatibility | The phone may connect, but some network capabilities or carrier features may not be available. | Read the carrier’s details and decide whether missing voice, data, messaging, or feature support is acceptable before switching. |
| Incompatible | The carrier does not currently accept that exact device for BYOD. | Do not assume an unlock will fix it. Ask the carrier whether a different model variant is supported; replace the phone only after confirming the result. |
| Blocked | The IMEI is associated with a block, such as a reported loss, theft, or another eligibility restriction. | Contact the original carrier or seller. A new SIM generally cannot remove an IMEI block. |
| Unknown | The checker cannot determine eligibility from the submitted information. | Recheck the IMEI and model, try the carrier’s support channel, and ask for a manual compatibility review. |
| eSIM-related result | The phone may be eligible for network service but not for the requested eSIM activation path, or the submitted EID may not be recognized. | Check the EID and ask whether a physical SIM is available for the same device. |
A positive result is not a promise of identical coverage, speed, call quality, or feature behavior to a phone sold directly by the carrier. T-Mobile states that it cannot test non-T-Mobile devices’ call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functions, and that experiences can vary with settings from the original carrier.

Confirm the phone is unlocked
Network compatibility and unlocking are separate requirements. Verizon’s BYOD FAQ states that a device must be both unlocked and have hardware and software compatible with Verizon’s mobile network. The same logic applies when evaluating another destination carrier: a compatible radio configuration cannot activate normally if the original carrier still restricts the handset.
If the checker confirms an unlocked status
Keep a record of that result and continue to the SIM or eSIM check. If the phone is financed, recently purchased, or tied to an account, verify that no remaining account condition can change its status.

- Identify the original carrier or retailer.
- Ask that carrier to verify the IMEI’s lock status and eligibility for an unlock.
- Complete any requirements it gives you, such as account verification or payoff, if applicable.
- After the carrier confirms the unlock, run the destination carrier’s checker again if the result was previously unknown or partial.
Do not confuse a phone that accepts another carrier’s SIM with a phone that has passed the destination carrier’s compatibility check. Temporary roaming or limited connectivity does not establish full BYOD eligibility.
Check physical SIM and eSIM support separately
After the IMEI result, determine how the line will be installed. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance uses the EID to check eSIM compatibility and provides a physical-SIM path when eSIM is not available.
Physical SIM path
- Confirm the phone has a compatible SIM slot and that the destination carrier can provision the device with a physical SIM.
- Use the carrier’s activation instructions for inserting and registering the SIM.
- If the phone has two SIM slots, follow the carrier’s instruction for which IMEI or slot to submit.
eSIM path
- Find the EID in the phone’s network, SIM, or About-phone settings.
- Submit the EID through the carrier’s eSIM or BYOD flow if requested.
- Make sure the phone is connected to Wi-Fi during eSIM download and activation.
- If the EID is not accepted, ask for a physical SIM option rather than assuming the handset itself is incompatible.
A phone can pass an IMEI-based network check and still require a physical SIM because the carrier cannot provision its eSIM, or because that model’s eSIM implementation is not supported on the selected activation path.

Account for model and software differences
Use the complete model identity, not only the marketing name. Manufacturers can sell regional or carrier-specific variants under nearly identical names, with different internal network technology or software. T-Mobile specifically warns that phones can have internal technology and software differences and does not guarantee performance for non-T-Mobile devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before buying a used phone, ask for:
- A photo or screen capture showing the IMEI from the handset itself.
- The exact model number from Settings > About phone.
- The original carrier, if known.
- Confirmation that the phone is not reported lost, stolen, or otherwise blocked.
- Whether the seller has tested a physical SIM or eSIM, without treating that test as a replacement for your own destination-carrier check.
Run the IMEI on the carrier you plan to use before paying. Checking a different model from the same product family, or checking only a manufacturer’s general specification page, can produce the wrong answer for your handset.
How to use carrier-specific information responsibly
Verizon
Verizon’s BYOD checker requests a 15-digit IMEI. Its Android guidance points to Settings > About Phone and the *#06# dial code for finding the number. Verizon’s BYOD FAQ makes the two-part eligibility rule explicit: the device must be unlocked, and its hardware and software must be compatible with the network.
T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s checker reports distinctions such as full, partial, incompatible, blocked, and unknown results, and it addresses eSIM checks using the EID. It also cautions that performance and feature support for non-T-Mobile devices can vary. Treat a result as an eligibility assessment, not a guarantee of identical network behavior.
AT&T
An AT&T supported-device PDF reviewed for this subject says it was last updated November 29, 2022. It includes model-specific examples, but that date makes it unsuitable as a definitive current eligibility list. Use AT&T’s current compatibility checker for the handset and IMEI you intend to activate.

When the checker fails or gives an unexpected answer
The form rejects the IMEI
- Count the digits and confirm that you entered the 15-digit IMEI rather than a serial number, model number, or EID.
- Remove spaces, hyphens, and copied punctuation.
- For a dual-SIM phone, try the other IMEI if the carrier instructs you to do so.
- Read the number directly from the phone with
*#06#or About-phone settings.
The result says unknown
Repeat the check with the exact IMEI and model information. If it remains unknown, contact the destination carrier and request a manual review. Keep the original carrier’s details available because the carrier may need to distinguish an unlisted model from a locked or blocked device.
The result says partial
Do not activate until you know which functions are affected. Ask specifically about voice calling, mobile data, messaging, eSIM, and any carrier features you consider essential. A phone that works for occasional data but lacks dependable voice service may not meet your needs.
The result says blocked
Stop the purchase or activation process and contact the seller and original carrier. Request written clarification of the IMEI status. Do not pay for an unlock service that claims it can bypass an IMEI block; the carrier or a legitimate ownership correction is the appropriate route.
The phone passes but activation still fails
- Verify that the IMEI submitted during activation is the same one that passed the check.
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked, not merely compatible.
- Check whether you selected eSIM when the device requires a physical SIM, or vice versa.
- Install any available device software update and restart the phone.
- Contact the destination carrier with the checker result, model number, IMEI, and activation error.
Compare two phones or two carriers before you switch
When choosing between candidate handsets or destinations, compare the same evidence for each option. The following framework prevents an “unlocked” label from becoming the only decision point.
| Comparison question | Phone A / Carrier option | Phone B / Carrier option |
|---|---|---|
| Exact IMEI checker result | Record the destination carrier’s wording. | Record the destination carrier’s wording. |
| Unlock status | Confirmed, unconfirmed, or locked. | Confirmed, unconfirmed, or locked. |
| Full or partial support | List any affected capabilities. | List any affected capabilities. |
| Required features | Verify voice, data, messaging, and carrier-specific functions. | Verify voice, data, messaging, and carrier-specific functions. |
| Activation method | Physical SIM, eSIM, or both; verify the EID if required. | Physical SIM, eSIM, or both; verify the EID if required. |
If either phone returns incompatible or blocked, eliminate it unless the carrier resolves the status before purchase. If one returns partial and the other returns full, compare the missing functions against how you actually use the phone rather than assuming partial support is acceptable.

Activate only after the checks pass
- Save the destination carrier’s compatibility result.
- Obtain confirmation that the phone is unlocked and not blocked.
- Choose the supported physical-SIM or eSIM route.
- Follow the carrier’s BYOD activation flow and provide the requested IMEI or EID.
- Restart the phone after activation and test calling, texting, mobile data, and the features you rely on.
- If a test fails, report the exact symptom and the saved checker result to carrier support.
Testing after activation matters because eligibility and real-world feature behavior are not identical. T-Mobile explicitly says that it cannot test non-T-Mobile devices’ call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functions, so a successful checker result should not be presented as a guarantee of identical service.
Examples of common decisions
An unlocked phone with a full result
The phone’s IMEI returns full compatibility, the original carrier confirms the unlock, and the destination carrier accepts the selected SIM method. This is the straightforward BYOD case: proceed with activation and test the essential services afterward.
An unlocked phone with a partial result
The IMEI is not blocked and the phone is unlocked, but the destination carrier identifies partial support. Ask which capabilities are limited. If those limitations include a service you need, choose another handset or carrier instead of relying on the word “unlocked.”
A phone with an unknown result
The IMEI is entered correctly but the database cannot classify the device. Contact the destination carrier for a manual review and verify the exact model variant. Do not buy a replacement until the carrier confirms whether the issue is a database gap, an unlock problem, or a true incompatibility.
A phone that supports eSIM elsewhere but not on the destination carrier
Submit the EID through the destination carrier’s eSIM check. If the EID is not accepted, ask for a physical SIM path. The eSIM result does not automatically invalidate the phone’s broader network eligibility.
The decision rule
Use this order: identify the exact handset, retrieve its IMEI, run the intended carrier’s official checker, interpret the detailed result, confirm unlock and block status, then verify physical-SIM or eSIM activation. Replace the phone only when the destination carrier confirms incompatibility, an unresolved block, or a limitation that conflicts with your needs. That sequence avoids the most common mistake: treating “unlocked” as a universal compatibility verdict.
