Use recent, independent Android security-lab results rather than installing malware yourself. Confirm the exact app version and test date, read the Android version and device context, check whether the lab used default settings and cloud access, and compare protection with false positives, performance and usability. Keep Google Play Protect enabled as a baseline, especially when installing apps from outside Google Play.
A laboratory score is evidence from one controlled test round, not a promise that an app will catch every future threat. The safest home check is to verify settings and warnings; never download a live malicious APK to challenge a scanner.

What a detection result can—and cannot—tell you
Android antivirus testing answers a narrow question: how a particular app build handled a defined sample set under specified conditions. The result is tied to the product version, Android version, test date, network access, settings and sample collection. A high score means the app performed well in that round; it does not establish a permanent detection rate for every malicious or unwanted app.
Recommended Free Tools
Detection is only one part of protection. A scanner can identify many malicious packages yet create problems by blocking legitimate software, consuming battery or slowing a phone. Conversely, a product with low false positives but weak protection is not a sensible choice. Read the separate protection, performance and usability measurements instead of treating one headline number as a guarantee.

Why the test date matters
Threats and app engines change continually. AV-TEST says its Android procedure includes current malware samples, including samples first identified within 24 hours, and separately tests malware that has circulated for up to four weeks. Its methodology also uses default settings, online access, warnings recorded by an analysis app and identical, repeatable systems. See the full procedure at AV-TEST’s Android protection test modules.
Because the samples and engines are time-bound, record the month and year beside every score. A result from an older Android release can still explain how a lab measures false positives or battery use, but it should not be presented as a current ranking.
Step 1: Find a recent Android-specific test for the exact app
- Search the independent lab’s Android results page. Start with AV-TEST’s Android antivirus test results and AV-Comparatives’ mobile reports. Do not substitute a Windows, macOS or generic “mobile” score for an Android result.
- Write down the test round. Note the publication month and year, the Android version or device context, and whether the lab lists the product’s exact version. Results apply to the build that was tested, not automatically to a later update.
- Confirm that the product is actually included. If the app is absent, do not infer quality from another app made by the same company or from a store rating. “Not tested” is different from “failed.”
- Prefer more than one recent round when available. Consistent results across dated rounds provide stronger evidence than a single result. This is still an inference from repeated, version-specific observations, not a guarantee of future behavior.
What to record in your notes
- Product name and exact version, if listed.
- Test month and year.
- Android version and device context.
- Whether settings were defaults or specially tuned.
- Whether the app could query its cloud service.
- Protection score, false-positive findings, performance or battery impact and usability notes.
- Any limits the lab states about samples, features or geography.
Step 2: Check how the lab performed the test
A score is meaningful only when you understand the conditions behind it. Use the methodology page, not just a badge or a marketing screenshot.

Samples and timing
Look for the age and size of the malware set. AV-TEST describes a set containing several thousand of the latest malware apps, with very recent samples and samples circulating for up to four weeks. That design tests both rapid response and coverage of threats that remain in circulation. A report that does not state sample age or scope leaves an important part of the result unknown.
Device, Android and network conditions
Check which Android release and device configuration were used. A security feature may behave differently on another Android version, with a different vendor skin or with restricted background activity. Also check whether internet or cloud queries were allowed. Cloud access can be part of normal protection, so an offline-only test is not directly comparable with an online test.

Settings and repeatability
Default settings usually represent what an ordinary user receives immediately after installation. AV-TEST’s procedure uses default settings, permits online access and repeats conditions on identical systems. If a report uses an expert configuration, note that it may require permissions or choices you would not make on your phone.
Detection stage
Some tests examine whether an app blocks installation; others observe warnings, scans after installation or behavior during execution. These are different protection moments. A product can warn about a package without preventing every action it might attempt. Read the lab’s description of when a detection counts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 3: Read protection, false positives and usability separately
AV-TEST reports three categories: protection, performance and usability. In its July 2026 Android round, each category was worth up to six points, for 18 points total, and 10 points earned the AV-TEST seal. Use the category breakdown to understand trade-offs rather than relying on the seal alone.
| Measure | Question it answers | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | How did the app handle the lab’s malicious samples? | Score, sample age, sample count and whether detections occurred before installation or later. |
| Performance | What device or battery cost did protection impose? | Battery, speed or resource findings under the stated test conditions. |
| Usability | Did the app create practical problems? | False alarms on legitimate apps, warnings and the clarity of user actions. |
Why false positives deserve equal attention
False positives are legitimate apps incorrectly identified as harmful. They can block banking, accessibility, work or communication software, and repeated warnings can train users to dismiss genuine alerts. AV-Comparatives’ 2021 Android test illustrates the necessary breadth: it examined more than 3,500 recent malicious apps and 500 legitimate apps, along with battery drain and anti-theft functions. That is a historical methodology example, not a current product ranking; see the lab’s announcement at AV-Comparatives’ 2021 Android test.
Do not convert a perfect category into a guarantee
A product can receive full points in one round because it handled that round’s set under those conditions. New malware, a changed app build, a disabled cloud connection or a different Android version can produce a different outcome. Treat the result as a dated observation and keep your phone’s built-in protections active.

Keep Google Play Protect as your baseline
Google describes Play Protect as built-in malware defense that automatically scans apps on Android phones, including apps obtained outside Google Play. Google says it scans 200 billion Android apps daily; that is Google’s published scanning-volume figure, not an independent measurement of detection accuracy. Its product description is available at Google Play Protect.
Google’s cloud-protection documentation says Play Protect combines machine learning, static and dynamic analysis, third-party reports, signatures and behavior signals. Those layers are described at Google’s cloud-based protections documentation. Multiple signals improve coverage, but they do not mean every malicious or unwanted app will be identified.
Verify that scanning is enabled
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Play Protect, then open its settings.
- Confirm that app scanning is enabled. If your device offers an option to improve harmful-app detection, leave it enabled unless you have a specific, informed reason not to.
- Run a scan and install pending Android and Google Play system updates. Menu names can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
These checks confirm that the baseline service is active; they do not test a third-party antivirus app or establish a detection percentage.
Understand sideloading and Play Protect warnings
Sideloading means installing an app from a browser, messaging attachment, file manager or another source instead of Google Play. It changes the risk context because store review is no longer the only screening layer. AV-Comparatives’ 2025 review notes that stalkerware is typically sideloaded because it is not available on Google Play. Built-in scanning and store review help, but neither turns one score into a guarantee.

Google’s warning guidance says an unknown app may prompt you to send it to Google for a security check. Google also documents stronger warnings for apps downloaded directly from online sources when they request sensitive permissions such as SMS, notification-listener or accessibility access. Read the guidance at Google’s Play Protect warning documentation.
What to do when a warning appears
- Pause the installation; do not tap through automatically.
- Verify who publishes the app, why you need it and whether an official store version exists.
- Review requested permissions, especially access to SMS, notifications, accessibility services, contacts or device administration.
- Let Play Protect submit the app for its security check when prompted.
- If the source or purpose cannot be verified, cancel and delete the downloaded package.
A warning is a safety signal, not a comparative test result. Conversely, the absence of a warning is not proof that an app is harmless.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use this repeatable pre-install workflow
- Define your use case. Note whether you install only from Google Play or also use work stores, developer builds or sideloaded packages. Include any need for accessibility, notification or device-administration features.
- Find the latest Android-specific lab rounds. Record the date, product version, Android version and device context for each result.
- Read the methodology. Check sample age and size, default or custom settings, cloud access, detection stage and whether the systems were repeatable.
- Compare all reported categories. Put protection beside false positives, performance, battery and usability. If a category is not reported, mark it as not stated rather than assuming it was acceptable.
- Check at least one additional recent round. Look for a pattern across dates. Explain any change by checking for a new app version, Android release or different test conditions.
- Confirm Play Protect. Enable scanning and keep Android and Google Play system updates current.
- Review permissions before installation. High-risk permissions should have a clear function that matches the app’s purpose.
- Decide whether the evidence fits your behavior. A test performed on Android 15 with cloud access may be more relevant to a current, always-online phone than an offline test on Android 10, but neither exactly reproduces every handset.
- Install only from a source you can verify. If Play Protect warns, stop and investigate instead of disabling the warning to proceed.
What not to do: never use live malware as a home test
Downloading a real malicious APK to see whether an antivirus app catches it can expose accounts, messages, photos and other devices on the same network. It also cannot reproduce a lab’s controlled sample set, repeatable system state or measurement of false positives and usability. The published procedures establish controlled testing, not a safe consumer experiment.
Do not disable Play Protect, grant sensitive permissions to an unknown package or use a personal phone as a test device. Use public laboratory results, verify protection settings and treat every unsolicited warning as a reason to stop.

No Android-specific result exists
Record the app as untested rather than borrowing a desktop score or assuming that a store rating measures malware detection. Check whether the developer publishes a version history and whether a reputable lab has scheduled a future round, but do not present either as proof.

The result is old
Use it only to understand the lab’s method or historical behavior. State the test date prominently and look for a newer round before relying on the product.
Two labs disagree
Compare their sample sets, Android versions, default settings, cloud access and detection stage. Different conditions can produce different scores without either lab being wrong. Give more weight to the round that resembles your phone and installation habits, while noting the other result.
The app changed after the test
Assume the published score applies only to the tested build. A major engine, permission or cloud-service change makes the old result less predictive until a newer test is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA compact checklist before you trust an Android antivirus app
- Is there a recent, independent Android test for the exact app?
- Did you record the test month, app version, Android version and device context?
- Were defaults, internet access and cloud queries described?
- Are sample age, sample size and detection stage clear?
- Did you check false positives as well as protection?
- Did you review performance, battery and usability findings?
- Have you compared more than one recent round where possible?
- Is Google Play Protect enabled and updated?
- Does the evidence reflect your use of Google Play, work stores or sideloading?
- Will you refuse to install a package when its source, permissions or warning cannot be verified?
If any answer is no, the honest conclusion is that the app’s detection ability is not established for your situation. Choose based on the evidence that is available, keep Play Protect active and revisit the decision when a newer Android-specific test appears.
