You can judge an analyst’s iPhone forecast only by matching the original, dated estimate with Apple’s subsequently reported result for the same fiscal quarter and the same measure. Preserve the estimate as it existed when published, identify whether it predicts iPhone revenue or units, calculate the error with one consistent formula, and repeat the test across several comparable forecasts. One quarter’s beat or miss is an observation, not proof of forecasting skill.
This method also separates forecast accuracy from explanations for a miss. Apple’s fiscal calendar, holiday seasonality, product timing, supply, foreign exchange and other documented conditions can affect the outcome, but context does not change the numerical comparison. A reliability verdict requires a timestamped history, a defined forecast horizon and enough observations to show whether errors are consistently small, systematically high or systematically low.

What “reliable” should mean in an iPhone forecast
Reliability is not the same as being right once, having a large following or appearing close to a later consensus estimate. For an iPhone sales forecast, reliability means that an analyst’s estimates are measured against the actual Apple result they were intended to predict, using comparable periods and metrics, and that the pattern remains useful over multiple observations.
A defensible assessment answers five questions:
- Was the estimate archived with its publication date and the fiscal quarter it covered?
- Did the forecast measure iPhone revenue, unit volume or another statistic?
- Was it compared with Apple’s result for that exact fiscal quarter?
- How large were the signed and absolute errors, and did they show a consistent bias?
- Did the record hold across several forecasts made at a comparable time before earnings?
If any of those elements is missing, describe the result as incomplete rather than assigning a confident accuracy label.

Collect the right evidence before doing any math
Save the forecast as it appeared at the time
Keep a dated copy or transcript of the analyst’s original note, interview, television segment or published estimate. Record the analyst’s name, firm, publication date, fiscal quarter, forecast horizon, metric, estimate and any stated assumptions. A current consensus figure is not evidence of what one analyst predicted earlier; estimates may have been revised repeatedly after new information arrived.
For example, an estimate issued two days before Apple’s earnings release should not be pooled with an estimate issued six months earlier unless you label the horizons separately. The near-term estimate had access to more information and represents a different forecasting task.
Identify Apple’s fiscal quarter, not just a calendar label
Apple’s fiscal quarters do not map neatly onto January–March, April–June, July–September and October–December calendar quarters. Use the quarter named in the forecast and match it with Apple’s quarterly earnings report and financial statements. A forecast for fiscal 2024 third quarter must be compared with Apple’s FY2024 Q3 result, not with a calendar-quarter sales estimate that happens to cover similar months.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Write the fiscal year and quarter in every row of your worksheet. If an analyst says “the June quarter,” retain that wording in your notes but resolve it to Apple’s official fiscal label before calculating an error.
Match the measure: revenue is not units
Apple’s financial statements report iPhone net sales in dollars. They do not provide an official iPhone unit-sales figure in the cited consolidated statement. Therefore, a revenue result cannot validate or invalidate an analyst’s unit forecast.

Apple’s FY2024 Q3 consolidated financial statements reported iPhone net sales of $39.296 billion, compared with $39.669 billion in FY2023 Q3. Those figures are revenue, not shipments or sell-through units. If an analyst forecast 42 million iPhones, you need a reliable unit result measured on the same basis; the $39.296 billion figure cannot be substituted.
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Analyst and firm | Exact name and employer | Prevents two people’s estimates being merged. |
| Publication date | Date and, when available, time | Establishes the information set and forecast horizon. |
| Fiscal period | Apple fiscal year and quarter | Avoids calendar-quarter mismatches. |
| Metric | iPhone net sales, units or another defined measure | Keeps revenue and volume comparisons separate. |
| Estimate | Numeric value and currency or unit | Provides the denominator for the error calculation. |
| Horizon | Days or months before the earnings release | Makes short- and long-range forecasts comparable. |
| Assumptions and revisions | Product timing, supply, foreign exchange and later estimate changes | Explains changes without replacing the original estimate. |
Step-by-step: compare a forecast with Apple’s reported result
- Archive the original estimate. Save the dated version and transcribe the number exactly. If the analyst gave a range, record the low, high and midpoint instead of silently converting it to one number.
- Define the target. Write the fiscal year, quarter, metric, currency and units. Note whether the estimate concerns Apple’s reported net sales or an analyst-defined shipment measure.
- Retrieve Apple’s primary result. Use Apple Investor Relations quarterly earnings reports and the related consolidated financial statements. Confirm the iPhone net-sales line, the fiscal period and whether the figure is reported in millions or billions.
- Check the basis. Make sure both values are revenue figures or both are unit figures. Do not compare an analyst’s sell-in shipment estimate with Apple’s net sales.
- Record the dollar or unit difference. Subtract the forecast from the reported result. This shows the practical size of the miss in the original measurement units.
- Calculate a signed percentage error. Use
(reported result − forecast) ÷ forecast × 100. A positive percentage means Apple reported more than forecast; a negative percentage means it reported less. - Calculate absolute error separately. Ignore the sign when measuring closeness. A forecast that is 8% high and one that is 8% low are equally far from the result, even though their directional implications differ.
- Store revisions rather than overwriting them. If the analyst changed the estimate, keep the original and each dated revision. Evaluate each version according to its own horizon or use a clearly defined rule for selecting one version.
- Repeat for comparable quarters. Build a quarter-by-quarter record before drawing a conclusion. State exactly how many observations are included and which fiscal quarters they cover.
Use consistent error measures
No single statistic captures every aspect of forecasting quality. Display the raw difference, signed percentage error and absolute percentage error for every quarter. Then summarize only after the individual rows are visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Measure | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar or unit difference | Reported − forecast | The size of the miss in the original units. |
| Signed percentage error | (Reported − forecast) ÷ forecast × 100 | Direction and relative size; positive is above forecast, negative is below. |
| Absolute percentage error | Absolute value of signed percentage error | Closeness without rewarding offsetting high and low misses. |
| Mean absolute error | Average of absolute differences | Typical miss in dollars or units when every quarter has the same scale. |
| Mean absolute percentage error | Average of absolute percentage errors | Typical relative miss across quarters. |
| Mean signed error or bias | Average of signed percentage errors | Whether the analyst tends to run high or low; positive and negative errors can cancel. |
Always show the number of observations behind an average. A 3% mean absolute percentage error over four quarters is not equivalent to 3% over twenty quarters, and a mean signed error near zero can hide large alternating misses.
Worked revenue example
Suppose an analyst’s archived FY2024 Q3 iPhone revenue estimate was $40.000 billion. Apple later reported $39.296 billion in iPhone net sales for that fiscal quarter. The dollar difference is $39.296 billion − $40.000 billion = −$0.704 billion. The signed percentage error is (39.296 − 40.000) ÷ 40.000 × 100 = −1.76%. The absolute percentage error is 1.76%.
This example demonstrates the calculation; it does not establish the reliability of the analyst. Reliability would require the same calculation for other dated forecasts, with the same revenue definition and a stated horizon.

Build a quarter-by-quarter record
Use one row for each original estimate and keep the source wording in a notes column. A useful worksheet has the following columns:
| Fiscal quarter | Forecast date | Horizon | Metric | Forecast | Apple result | Difference | Signed error | Absolute error | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2024 Q3 | Date estimate was published | Days before release | Revenue | Value in $bn | 39.296 $bn | Result − forecast | Percentage | Absolute percentage | Original assumptions and revisions |
| Each additional quarter | Original date | Comparable horizon | Same metric | Original value | Reported value | Calculated | Calculated | Calculated | Documented context |
Do not select only the quarters that make the analyst look good. Include misses, withdrawn estimates and periods in which the analyst did not publish a comparable forecast, and explain any exclusion rule before calculating an average.
Separate forecast horizon from forecast quality
Short-horizon estimates
An estimate made immediately before earnings incorporates recent channel checks, supply information and management commentary. Its expected uncertainty is narrower than that of a forecast made many months earlier. Compare short-horizon estimates with other short-horizon estimates and report the horizon in days or weeks.
Long-horizon estimates
A long-range forecast is exposed to more product, macroeconomic and supply-chain uncertainty. A larger miss does not automatically prove poor analysis if the horizon is materially longer, but it should not be pooled with near-term estimates in one undifferentiated score.
Revised estimates
Revisions are part of the record. Preserve the first estimate to evaluate the original call, then list later revisions with their dates. If you want to assess the analyst’s latest pre-earnings view, define a separate “last estimate before release” series and apply that rule to every quarter.

Account for Apple’s fiscal seasonality without changing the test
Apple states in its FY2026 Q2 Form 10-Q that it has historically experienced higher net sales in its first fiscal quarter, partly because of holiday demand. This makes same-fiscal-quarter year-over-year context useful: compare an FY2026 Q1 forecast with prior first-quarter results rather than treating it like a second- or third-quarter observation.
Seasonality is context, not a substitute for the direct forecast-to-result comparison. The primary question remains whether the estimate for that quarter matched the reported result. Year-over-year growth can help explain why a number was difficult to predict, but it cannot turn a revenue forecast into a unit forecast or repair a mismatched period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Read Apple’s filings and earnings call materials for context
Apple provides quarterly results and net sales by category through its Investor Relations materials. Apple also explains that it files quarterly reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and offers quarterly analyst-call webcasts, with replays available for a period after each announcement. Use the financial statement for the reported number and the company’s release or call for management’s explanation of demand, supply, product timing and other documented factors.
Apple’s filings also warn that forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties. A forecast can miss because conditions or assumptions changed after publication. Record that explanation separately from the numerical score: the result tells you how close the forecast was, while the filing and call may explain why it was difficult.

Apply identical rules to every analyst. The comparison axes below prevent a precise-looking ranking built from incompatible observations.
Best Value
| Axis | Fair comparison rule |
|---|---|
| Fiscal quarter | Compare forecasts covering the same Apple fiscal quarter. |
| Forecast date and horizon | Group estimates made at similar intervals before earnings. |
| Metric | Keep iPhone revenue, unit volume and growth-rate forecasts in separate series. |
| Currency and scale | Convert units consistently and state whether values are millions or billions. |
| Revision treatment | Use the original estimate, the last pre-release estimate or both, but declare the rule. |
| Error definition | Use the same signed and absolute formulas for every analyst. |
| Bias | Report average signed error so persistent optimism or pessimism is visible. |
| Sample size | Show the number of quarters and the exact date range. |
| Documented assumptions | Note product timing, supply or foreign-exchange assumptions only when they appear in the original forecast or Apple’s materials. |
Do not rank an analyst with ten comparable quarters against another with two and present the result as a definitive skill contest. A larger record is not automatically better, but it gives a more informative view of consistency.
Common ways reliability checks go wrong
- Using a current consensus estimate. This erases what the analyst actually said at the time. Find a timestamped archive or label the historical estimate as unavailable.
- Mixing fiscal and calendar quarters. Similar month names can conceal different Apple reporting periods.
- Confusing revenue with units. Apple’s reported iPhone net sales in dollars cannot test a shipment forecast.
- Dropping the forecast horizon. A six-month call and a two-day call answer different questions.
- Using only a hit. Selective examples create survivorship bias. Include every eligible observation under your stated rule.
- Reporting only a percentage. Include the dollar or unit difference so a reader can see the practical scale of the miss.
- Letting errors cancel. A near-zero average signed error may hide large opposing misses; show absolute errors too.
- Overwriting revisions. Replacing an early estimate with a later one makes the original forecast appear more accurate than it was.
- Explaining before measuring. Product delays, supply constraints or foreign exchange may explain a miss, but they do not alter the arithmetic.
- Overstating a small sample. Say “in the four quarters measured” instead of claiming a permanent forecasting ability.
A practical worksheet and reporting format
For each observation, keep the following record in a spreadsheet or plain-text file:
Analyst: [name]
Firm: [firm]
Forecast published: [YYYY-MM-DD]
Apple fiscal period: [FY20XX QX]
Metric: [iPhone net sales revenue or units]
Forecast: [value and currency/unit]
Forecast horizon: [days before Apple release]
Apple reported result: [value and currency/unit]
Difference: reported - forecast
Signed error: (reported - forecast) / forecast * 100
Absolute error: absolute value of signed error
Revision history and documented assumptions: [notes]
When publishing a summary, show the underlying quarter rows first, then state the average absolute error, average signed error, number of observations and horizon grouping. Readers should be able to reproduce every calculation from the displayed figures.

The procedure can establish whether a specific archived estimate was close to Apple’s reported result and whether a defined set of forecasts shows small errors or a directional bias. It cannot establish a personal reliability verdict when the analyst, forecast date, horizon or archived estimate is unknown.
The available Apple materials establish the reported revenue series and the reporting context, including the FY2024 Q3 iPhone net-sales figures and the FY2026 Q2 filing’s seasonality and forward-looking-risk disclosures. They do not by themselves provide a named analyst’s timestamped forecast history. Until that history is supplied, the accurate answer to “How accurate was the analyst’s iPhone sales forecast?” is that the accuracy remains unresolved.
Final checklist before publishing a verdict
- Have you preserved the estimate as originally published, with a date?
- Is the Apple fiscal quarter an exact match?
- Are forecast and result both revenue or both units?
- Did you record currency, scale and the original horizon?
- Did you calculate signed and absolute errors with one formula?
- Did you show the raw difference as well as percentages?
- Are revisions visible rather than silently substituted?
- Does the sample include all eligible quarters and state its size?
- Did you separate seasonality and documented risks from the numerical result?
- Are comparisons between analysts made on the same horizon and metric?
Only after those checks should you describe an analyst as consistently accurate, biased high or low, or insufficiently documented. Otherwise, report the individual comparison and state precisely what remains unknown.
