No single detector can prove that an image or video is a deepfake. A reliable check combines the best available file, provider-specific provenance signals, reverse search, metadata, visible or frame-by-frame clues, and independent corroboration. Even then, the correct conclusion may be “unverified.”
Keep three different questions separate: How was the media made? (AI-generated or edited), has it been altered? (manipulated), and is it being presented honestly? (context). A genuine recording can be misleadingly captioned, while an AI-assisted edit does not automatically make the depicted event false.

What “deepfake” checking can and cannot establish
“Deepfake” is commonly used for synthetic or heavily altered media, especially when machine-learning systems create a person’s face, voice, or actions. In practice, an investigation can reach several different findings:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Supported provenance: a trusted record or provider signal is associated with the file.
- Likely manipulated: evidence indicates editing or synthesis, but the exact method or purpose is not established.
- Misleading presentation: the recording may be genuine, yet the caption, date, location, speaker, or surrounding claim is wrong.
- Unresolved: available evidence is insufficient to decide.
These are not interchangeable verdicts. A provenance mark can show where a file or an edit came from without proving that the scene happened as described. Conversely, a file with no mark is not automatically camera-original: metadata may have been stripped, the generator may be unsupported, or later processing may have degraded the signal.

The most defensible result is therefore an evidence-based statement such as “a supported provider signal was detected, but the accompanying claim was not verified,” or “no reliable provenance was found; the media remains inconclusive.”
Use this verification sequence
Work from the least destructive evidence to the most interpretive. Save what you have before uploading it to a service, and record what each check actually tested.
- Preserve the best available copy. Prefer the original file supplied by the creator or source, not a screenshot, screen recording, or repeatedly reposted download.
- Check supported provenance. Use provider tools that can read supported signals such as SynthID or a trusted C2PA Content Credentials manifest.
- Interpret both positive and negative results narrowly. A positive result is scoped to the signal and provider; no result is inconclusive.
- Find earlier appearances. Reverse-search still images or representative video frames and compare dates, captions, and locations.
- Inspect metadata. Look for camera, time, software, and editing traces in the original file when available.
- Examine visual and temporal details. Treat oddities as leads, then seek independent confirmation.
- Use automated detectors cautiously. Ask whether the tool was tested on comparable generators, formats, and post-processing, and expect false positives and false negatives.
- Escalate consequential cases. Preserve the evidence and obtain independent forensic review before making safety, legal, financial, or reputational decisions.
1. Preserve the original-quality evidence
Why the copy matters
Platforms commonly resize, recompress, transcode, or strip files when users upload them. A screenshot removes the source file’s metadata and can introduce its own artifacts. A repost may have a new timestamp and no connection to the original creator. Download the highest-quality file you can obtain and keep the URL, account name, post text, and download date alongside it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not “clean up” the file before checking it. Converting a video, exporting an image, or sending it through a messaging app can erase the very records you need. If the only copy is a screenshot or repost, label it as such in your notes; that limits what can be inferred but does not prove the media is fake.
Keep an evidence record
- Save the original filename and file type.
- Record where and when you obtained it.
- Capture the surrounding caption, comments, and claimed date or location.
- Keep an untouched copy and make working copies for analysis.
- For a video, note its duration and preserve the audio track as supplied.
2. Check provider-supported provenance
OpenAI signals
OpenAI’s public verification tool looks for supported OpenAI signals, including SynthID or a trusted C2PA manifest, in media formats and export paths it can read. A detected signal means that supported provenance associated with OpenAI was found. It does not establish that the image or video is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or shown in the correct context.
The check can return no signal when the file came from an unsupported product or model, uses an unsupported format or export path, or had its metadata removed. OpenAI’s guidance also cautions that no detection method is foolproof. Treat the tool as one provider-specific test, not a universal deepfake detector.

Gemini checks
Gemini can check supported media for SynthID and Content Credentials where the feature and format are available. Content Credentials are signed provenance information that can describe origin and editing history. Google explicitly says, “Content Credentials don’t tell you if an image, video, or audio file is definitely AI-generated.” They can document a chain of handling without deciding whether the claim made with the file is true.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Availability and supported formats can change. Record which provider tool you used, the file submitted, and the exact wording of the result. Do not treat a result from one provider as a test of every other image or video generator.
How to read a provenance result
| Result | What it supports | What it does not support |
|---|---|---|
| Supported provider signal detected | The file contains a signal associated with that provider or a signed provenance record that the tool could validate. | That the scene is factual, unedited, legally owned, or presented in context. |
| Content Credentials present | Origin and recorded editing history for the supported chain of custody. | A universal authenticity certificate or a guarantee that every intermediate edit was recorded. |
| No signal found | Only that the tested tool did not find a supported signal in that copy. | That the file came from a camera or is free of AI generation. |
Multiple alterations can eventually make a SynthID signal undetectable. A platform export, codec conversion, crop, or screenshot can also remove or damage provenance data. Write “no supported signal detected in this copy” rather than “not AI-generated.”
3. Search for earlier versions and the original context
Reverse image search can locate an earlier upload, a visually similar image, or a likely source. For video, extract several representative frames—such as the opening scene, a distinctive face, a sign, and the moment supporting the claim—and search them separately. Compare the earliest credible appearance with the post you are investigating.
An older upload can disprove a claimed date, location, or “just happened” description. It does not, by itself, prove whether the underlying file was camera-recorded or AI-generated. A genuine old recording can be reused with a false caption, and a synthetic clip can be posted long after it was made.

Compare the surrounding evidence
- Does the earliest source identify a creator, event, place, or date?
- Do captions change between versions?
- Is the apparent location consistent with weather, landmarks, road layouts, or language?
- Are cuts, crops, or missing audio hiding information?
- Do independent photographs, livestreams, official records, or reputable reporting support the claimed event?
Save the search results and their dates. Search engines rank results dynamically, so a later review may not show the same ordering.

4. Inspect metadata without treating it as proof
Exchangeable image metadata (EXIF) may contain a camera model, capture time, lens settings, orientation, GPS information, and software history. Video containers can include creation dates, codecs, and export applications. An editing program in the software field may indicate an export, but it does not reveal whether the edit was harmless trimming or deceptive synthesis.
Metadata is fragile. Social platforms, screenshots, transcoding, privacy tools, and ordinary editing can remove it. It can also be deliberately changed. A plausible camera model and timestamp are therefore clues, not an authenticity verdict; an empty metadata panel is not evidence of fakery.
Use metadata to generate questions
- Does the claimed capture time fit the post date and the lighting?
- Does the device and software history fit the file type and resolution?
- Does a GPS coordinate match the claimed location?
- Is the file an original camera output or a later export?
Keep a copy of the metadata report with the original file. Never alter the original while testing.

5. Examine images for clues, then corroborate them
Google’s guidance identifies common visual leads: garbled or nonsensical text, errors in small details, inconsistent shadows or lighting, and unnatural repetition. Inspect signs, logos, fingers, jewelry, eyeglasses, teeth, hair strands, reflections, and object boundaries at full resolution. Ask whether perspective, focus, and depth of field behave as they would in a real photograph.
Compression, sharpening, ordinary retouching, panorama stitching, and low light can create similar defects. A single malformed letter or odd edge is not proof of AI generation. Look for a pattern, preserve the relevant crop, and compare it with an independent source.
Context checks for still images
- Check whether shadows point consistently relative to the alleged light source.
- Compare weather, clothing, vegetation, and architecture with the claimed date and place.
- Look for repeated faces, textures, or objects that do not make physical sense.
- Check whether text remains consistent across signs, screens, and labels.
- Search distinctive details separately to find the original scene or a stock image.
6. Examine video frame by frame
Video provides temporal evidence that a single frame cannot. Watch the clip repeatedly at normal speed, then step through difficult moments frame by frame. Examine whether a face, hairline, hands, earrings, glasses, and background edges remain stable as the subject turns or lighting changes.

Video-specific leads
- Continuity: objects or body parts may jump, merge, or change shape between frames.
- Speech and lip synchronization: mouth movements, consonants, breathing, and room acoustics may not match the soundtrack.
- Reflections and shadows: mirrors, windows, water, and cast shadows should change consistently with movement.
- Lighting: a face may brighten or darken independently of the scene.
- Audio edits: abrupt noise-floor changes, unnatural pauses, or a voice that does not match the room are leads, not final proof.
Re-encoding, dropped frames, stabilization, and ordinary cuts can explain apparent discontinuities. Compare the suspicious segment with the full, longest version available and seek independent footage of the same event.

Authenticity and truth are separate. Even an apparently genuine recording may be mislabeled. Test the claim itself: who is speaking, what happened, where and when, and what evidence should exist if the event were real?
- Look for independent footage from a different camera or viewpoint.
- Check contemporaneous statements from accountable organizations or witnesses.
- Compare the audio, weather, shadows, and landmarks with the claimed time and place.
- Distinguish a complete event from a short excerpt that omits what happened before or after.
- Check whether a satire, reenactment, demonstration, or fictional production was relabeled as news.
Do not count copies of the same upload as independent corroboration. Ten accounts repeating one file provide one underlying source.
8. Use automated detector scores with caution
Consumer detectors and research classifiers may analyze compression patterns, facial motion, image statistics, or other artifacts. Their output depends on the generator, file type, resolution, language, codec, and post-processing represented in their training and validation data. A score is not a universal probability that the media is fake.
NIST recommends evaluating automated media analysis against both manipulated and genuine examples to estimate false positives and false negatives, alongside manual review. Its deepfake evaluation work highlights two persistent problems: whether a detector generalizes to newer generators and whether it remains robust after resizing, recompression, cropping, or other post-processing.
Questions to ask before relying on a detector
- Does the provider publish a relevant validation study rather than only a score?
- Were the tested examples comparable in format, language, resolution, and generation method?
- Were genuine controls included, or were only synthetic samples tested?
- How does performance change after common platform transcoding?
- Can a reviewer inspect the evidence, or is the result an unexplained label?
Use a detector to prioritize manual review. Do not publish a high or low score as if it were a measured certainty unless the tool’s validation exactly matches the media and decision you are making.
Best Value
Compare checks by the evidence they provide
| Check | Detects or reveals | Main coverage limit | Typical failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provider signal check | A supported SynthID signal or provider-associated provenance. | Only supported providers, products, formats, and surviving signals. | No result after stripping, conversion, or unsupported generation. |
| Content Credentials | Signed origin and recorded editing history when present. | Only the chain that created and preserved the credentials. | Unrecorded edits or missing credentials leave gaps. |
| Reverse search | Earlier appearances, similar files, and source context. | New, private, cropped, or poorly indexed media. | Finds a related image without proving how it was made. |
| Metadata inspection | Camera, time, software, export, and sometimes location clues. | Only data retained in the supplied file. | Missing or altered fields are misread as evidence. |
| Visual and temporal review | Inconsistent text, lighting, anatomy, motion, reflections, or lip sync. | Low resolution, compression, and ordinary editing can look similar. | A striking artifact is treated as conclusive. |
| Automated detector | Model-specific statistical or artifact patterns. | Performance may not generalize to new generators or post-processing. | False positives, false negatives, or an opaque score. |
What to report when the answer is uncertain
Use calibrated language tied to the evidence. “A supported provenance signal associated with OpenAI was detected” is narrower and more accurate than “OpenAI proved this is a deepfake.” “No supported signal was found in the downloaded copy” is better than “the image is authentic.” If the source and context conflict, report the conflict instead of forcing a binary label.
Record the file examined, each tool and date used, the result wording, reverse-search findings, metadata observations, visible or temporal anomalies, and unresolved alternatives. This makes your conclusion reproducible and allows another reviewer to challenge a specific step.
When to stop investigating and escalate
Escalate when a decision could affect someone’s safety, reputation, money, employment, immigration status, or legal rights. Preserve the original and provenance records, restrict access to sensitive material, and seek an independent examiner with relevant forensic expertise. A second opinion is especially important when the file may be an intimate or otherwise harmful deepfake.
Do not forward or repost suspected intimate imagery while investigating it. Share only the minimum necessary evidence with an appropriate professional or authority, and consider privacy, consent, and applicable law. A fast public accusation can cause more harm than an unresolved but accurately qualified report.
A compact decision checklist
- Do I have the original file, or only a screenshot or repost?
- What exactly did the provider provenance check test, and what did it not test?
- Was a supported signal found, or was the result merely negative?
- Where did the media appear first, and does that source support the claimed date and context?
- What do metadata and frame-by-frame inspection suggest?
- Can independent evidence confirm the event rather than merely repeat the same file?
- Are detector results validated for this generator, format, and post-processing?
- What level of uncertainty remains, and is expert review required?
The goal is not to force every file into “real” or “fake.” It is to preserve evidence, test provenance and context separately, recognize the limits of each clue, and communicate exactly what has—and has not—been established.
