This can document overlap, weak attribution, or unsupported claims. It cannot, by itself, prove which document a model accessed or how the answer was produced.
Three different questions you must keep separate
Investigations become unreliable when they treat every suspicious passage as the same issue. Use three separate tests:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Overlap and attribution: Does the answer reproduce distinctive wording or ideas from your material, and does it identify the source?
- Source support: Does each citation actually support the specific statement attached to it?
- Production history: Can you prove that the model accessed your document or generated a passage from it?
The first two questions can be investigated with documents and source checking. The third generally cannot be established from the finished text alone. A matching phrase is evidence of textual overlap; it is not proof of a particular training source, retrieval event, or internal model process.
This distinction matters in an editorial, academic, employment, or legal setting. “The answer repeats our wording without credit” is a documentable observation. “The model must have trained on our file” is a claim about an unseen technical process and requires evidence that a text comparison cannot supply. Keep those conclusions separate even when the overlap looks striking.

1. Preserve the answer and the source material
Save the AI answer exactly as received before editing it. Keep the date and time, the model or service name and version if shown, all citations and links, and any attached files or quoted passages. Save the original version of your research, including the edition or revision that existed when the answer was produced.
In a publication, coursework, or scientific project, preserve the prompt and output where privacy, confidentiality, and institutional policy allow. APA Journals advises authors and editors to retain prompts and outputs where appropriate. CDC guidance for scientific work likewise emphasizes documenting tool use and human review. These are policy examples, not universal rules; your journal, employer, school, or funder may specify different records.
- Use a read-only copy or export so later edits cannot be confused with the original output.
- Record whether you supplied your own document to the system, pasted an excerpt, or asked a question without providing the material.
- Keep a change log if the answer is revised, fact-checked, or rewritten by a person.
- Redact personal, confidential, or regulated information before sharing evidence with reviewers.
- Note whether the answer came from a chat, an API, a search-assisted feature, or another workflow if that information is visible to you.
- Preserve the displayed citation text, not only the destination URL; links can later redirect, disappear, or change.
If the answer was copied into a document, retain the original export as well as the working file. Screenshots can help show how a result appeared, while a text or PDF export makes searching and quotation checking easier. Do not alter the captured answer to fix spelling or formatting before making your comparison.
2. Turn the answer into checkable claims
Do not assess an answer as one block of prose. Mark every factual proposition, date, number, quotation, interpretation, and reference. A single sentence may contain several claims that need different sources.
For each item, record:
- the exact sentence or passage;
- what it asserts, including any implied comparison or cause;
- the type of claim (fact, statistic, quotation, interpretation, or recommendation);
- the citation or link attached to it;
- the corresponding passage in your research, if one exists; and
- whether attribution is present, absent, or misleading.
The House of Commons Library recommends identifying factual claims and checking them against independent sources. Applying that approach at sentence level prevents a true detail from making an unsupported conclusion appear trustworthy.
Separate what is explicitly stated from what a reader might infer. For example, “The policy changed in June” is a date claim. “The change reduced costs” adds a causal claim. “The change reduced costs for all users” adds a scope claim. Each needs its own support, even if the answer puts them in one sentence.
Give quotations their own entries. A quotation may be accurately attributed but placed in a way that changes its meaning, or it may be paraphrased so closely that the source still needs clear credit. Treat recommendations and interpretations as claims too: they may rest on facts from your material even when they are not presented as quotations.
3. Compare wording and substance
Look for distinctive language
Search your original material for unusual strings of words, coined terms, uncommon examples, distinctive errors, or an idiosyncratic sequence of points. Record the complete matching sentence or paragraph and its location in the original. A short generic phrase such as “the results were significant” has little identifying value; a rare seven-word expression combined with the same unusual example is more informative.
Check headings, captions, footnotes, tables, and material in appendices as well as the main prose. A model-generated answer may reproduce a table label, an unusual ordering of categories, or a distinctive caveat while changing the surrounding sentences. Those details can be important evidence of overlap even when a basic phrase search finds little.
Check close paraphrases
Copying does not require identical wording. Compare the order of ideas, unusual factual combinations, examples, analogies, numbers, and qualifications. A passage can preserve the substance while changing every few words. Note which elements match and which do not instead of assigning an arbitrary similarity percentage.

Read the passages side by side. Mark shared facts in one color, shared structure in another, and differences in scope or certainty in a third. A reordered list of the same rare examples may be more informative than several common words in the same order. Conversely, a shared outline may simply reflect the normal structure of a standard explanation; document the distinctive elements that make the comparison meaningful.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test factual correspondence
Ask whether the answer represents your material accurately. An answer may borrow a conclusion but reverse a limitation, remove a date qualifier, or turn a tentative interpretation into a certainty. Record these as accuracy and attribution problems even when there is no verbatim match.
Check numbers for transcription errors and altered units. Check whether a quoted finding referred to a particular population, location, time period, or experimental condition. A paraphrase that omits those boundaries can be materially misleading even if its central nouns and verbs resemble the original.
Neither the Commons Library, CDC, nor APA guidance establishes a universal textual-similarity threshold that proves copying. Report the passages, locations, and degree of correspondence rather than presenting a score as a legal or disciplinary finding.
4. Check whether attribution is adequate
For every apparent match, ask what a reasonable reader would understand about its origin. Attribution may be missing entirely, attached to the wrong source, too vague to identify the work, or placed so far away that its scope is unclear. A citation to a general background page does not automatically credit a distinctive sentence taken from a particular report.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDistinguish attribution from permission. A citation can identify the source while a separate copyright, licence, quotation-length, confidentiality, or institutional rule still governs reuse. Conversely, a passage can be inaccurate or unsupported even when it contains a citation. Your comparison should describe each issue independently.
Separate these findings in your notes:
| Finding | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Exact or distinctive wording matches your document | Textual overlap exists and can be documented | How the model obtained the wording |
| Close paraphrase preserves your unusual facts or structure | Substantive overlap may exist | A universal threshold for misconduct |
| Matching passage has no attribution | Attribution is incomplete or absent | Intent to deceive |
| Answer cites a different work | Attribution may be inaccurate or misleading | That the cited work was never consulted |
| Answer names your work but gives it the wrong date, author, or title | The attribution is unreliable and needs correction | Why the metadata error occurred |
5. Open and verify every citation
Do not stop when a reference looks plausible. Open the cited page or document and perform three checks:
- Existence: Does the source and the cited passage actually exist?
- Identity: Is it the publication, author, date, edition, or dataset the answer claims?
- Support: Does it support the particular sentence, including its scope, qualifiers, and numbers?
OpenAI’s guidance warns that fabricated citations occur and recommends visiting source pages directly. A real source can still be misapplied: it may mention a topic without supporting the stated result, describe a different population, or disagree with the answer’s conclusion.
For quotations, compare the words character by character and check ellipses, brackets, translation, and surrounding context. For numbers, verify units, denominator, time period, geography, and whether the figure is a one-time estimate or a recurring measure. For legal, medical, financial, or safety claims, check the authoritative primary material rather than relying on a secondary summary.

When a link is broken, search for the publisher’s canonical page or an archived copy and note the retrieval date. Do not silently substitute a similarly titled document. If you cannot establish that the cited item exists or supports the statement, label support as unconfirmed rather than assuming the citation is correct.
6. Check currentness and independent confirmation
An authoritative source can be outdated or insufficient for a contested claim. Note the source’s publication and update dates, then ask whether a newer edition, correction, dataset, law, or official statement changes the answer.
Seek independent confirmation for material claims. Prefer a second authoritative source that reached the same factual result without simply repeating the first source. If independent sources disagree, describe the disagreement and the date of each position instead of selecting the answer’s preferred version without explanation.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Currentness is part of support, not an optional extra. A citation can accurately describe an earlier rule while failing to support a present-tense statement. Mark whether the answer uses past or present language, and whether its wording implies that an older source remains current.
7. Use an evidence record that another person can audit
A compact audit table makes your conclusion reproducible:
| Answer passage | Original location | Overlap | Attribution | Citation support | Currentness | Conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quote or claim copied exactly | Page, section, paragraph, or line | Exact, close paraphrase, or none | Present, missing, or wrong | Supported, partial, or unsupported | Current, dated, or uncertain | Describe only the demonstrated issue |
Attach saved copies or stable snapshots where your policy permits. A reviewer should be able to move from the AI sentence to the cited source and then to the matching passage in your material without relying on your memory.
Use neutral labels such as “exact match,” “close paraphrase,” “shared general knowledge,” “unsupported,” and “uncertain.” Add a confidence note explaining what would resolve an uncertainty, such as obtaining the cited edition or checking a newer official update. This makes the record useful even if a later reviewer reaches a different conclusion about intent.

What AI detectors and the model itself can—and cannot—tell you
Do not ask the model to authenticate its own text
OpenAI states that ChatGPT has no reliable knowledge of whether it generated a particular piece of writing and may invent an answer when asked. A response such as “I wrote this” or “I did not write this” is therefore not an authorship test. The same limitation applies when you ask a system whether it copied your document.
You can ask the system to explain a citation or summarize a passage, but treat that response as another unverified output. Return to the source itself. A model’s confidence, detailed explanation, or apparent memory does not replace documentary evidence.
Treat text detectors as indicators, not proof
AI-text indicators are not definitive. The Commons Library recommends assessing evidence and source verifiability rather than relying on superficial style clues. Detector results can vary with editing, language, passage length, and the system being tested; a label does not identify a source document or establish intent.

Understand provenance signals
OpenAI describes provenance tools that look for supported signals associated with OpenAI-generated content. A detected signal may provide information about supported content origin, but it does not prove accuracy, legal ownership, authorship, or how much a model contributed. A missing signal does not prove that content was not AI-generated: the signal may be unavailable, unsupported, removed, or degraded. These tools are designed for supported OpenAI signals, not as universal detectors for every AI system.
Text watermarking has further limits. OpenAI notes that short passages and code may not contain enough wording options for reliable detection. Exact or highly factual wording, and text reproduced from a user-provided source, may also be harder to detect. Do not treat either a positive or negative result as proof that your research was or was not copied.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to describe your finding accurately
Use language that matches the evidence:
- “This passage contains distinctive wording that matches page 4 of the supplied report; no attribution appears in the answer.”
- “The answer cites the article, but the cited section does not support the numerical claim attached to it.”
- “The answer closely paraphrases the report’s unusual example and conclusion. The comparison documents overlap; it does not establish how the model produced the text.”
- “The cited source is real but predates the policy change discussed, so the answer’s currentness is unconfirmed.”
Avoid saying “the model stole,” “the system trained on this document,” or “the detector proves plagiarism” unless you have separate evidence that genuinely establishes those propositions. A documented overlap or attribution failure may warrant correction, disclosure, editorial review, or an institutional process; it is not automatically a finding of misconduct or intent.
State uncertainty explicitly. “I found no matching passage in the version checked” is narrower and more accurate than “the model did not copy.” Likewise, “the citation does not support this sentence” does not necessarily mean the underlying fact is false; it means the answer has not supplied adequate support for it.
A repeatable review workflow
- Freeze the record. Save the answer, prompt where permitted, date, model details, supplied files, and all references.
- Annotate claims. Number each fact, quotation, figure, interpretation, and citation.
- Compare source material. Search for exact phrases, then inspect close paraphrases, structure, examples, and qualifiers.
- Assess attribution. Record whether the answer identifies the source accurately and clearly.
- Verify citations. Open every source, confirm identity, and test support for the precise attached claim.
- Check currency. Look for newer editions, corrections, changed rules, and independent confirmation.
- Write a bounded conclusion. State the overlap, support, attribution, and uncertainty separately.
- Apply the relevant policy. Follow your journal, institution, employer, or funder’s disclosure and review requirements.
For a quick first pass, prioritize high-risk material: exact quotations, unusual statistics, confidential findings, safety instructions, legal propositions, and claims that drive the answer’s conclusion. Then complete the same checks for less prominent passages. This triage helps you find consequential errors without replacing the full review.
Publication and scientific-work responsibilities
Policies differ. CDC guidance on scientific work recommends appropriate disclosure of generative AI use and says humans should confirm attribution for quoted material. APA Journals’ guidance includes reading original sources and preserving prompts or outputs where appropriate. Those examples show the kinds of controls organizations may require, but they do not replace the policy that governs your work.
If you are preparing a manuscript, keep a human reviewer responsible for checking quotations, references, and substantive claims. If you are investigating someone else’s output, give them a chance to identify drafts, licensed source material, or permitted retrieval steps before making a formal allegation. Keep confidential documents limited to people who are authorized to see them.
When a policy requires disclosure, describe the tool’s role precisely: drafting, summarizing, searching, translation, or analysis. Do not imply that a citation was independently checked if it was not. Preserve the human review record and identify any material corrections made after the generated answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ask ChatGPT if it wrote the answer?
You can ask, but its reply is not reliable evidence. OpenAI says ChatGPT has no dependable knowledge of whether it generated a particular piece of writing and may make up an answer. Compare the text and sources directly instead.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I check whether an AI citation really supports the claim?
Open the cited source, confirm that it exists and is the work identified, then read the relevant passage in context. Check the exact population, date, units, qualifiers, and conclusion. Classify support as supported, partial, unsupported, or unconfirmed.
Best Value
What if the answer contains my idea but not my words?
Compare the sequence of ideas, unusual examples, factual combinations, numbers, and limitations. Record substantive overlap and whether the answer attributes your work. Do not claim an exact textual match when only the underlying concept is similar.
Does a detector score prove plagiarism?
No. Detectors and provenance signals can provide limited indicators under supported conditions, but they do not identify a source document, establish intent, or prove how a model produced the passage. A missing signal is not proof of human authorship.
What if sources disagree?
Record the disagreement, dates, and authority of each source. Explain which position the answer uses and whether it acknowledges the conflict. Do not call a claim fully supported when the evidence remains contested.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do with a close match?
Save the passages, locations, citation details, and your comparison. Report the bounded finding—such as close paraphrase with missing attribution—to the person or process specified by your policy. Avoid asserting a model’s internal history unless separate evidence establishes it.
Bottom line
The defensible result is an evidence trail: which words or claims overlap, where the original appears, whether attribution is present, whether each citation supports its statement, and whether the information is current and independently confirmed. That process can reveal copying-like overlap or unsupported attribution. It cannot turn a detector score, a model’s self-report, or a provenance signal into universal proof of a model’s internal production history.

Does an AI detector score prove plagiarism?
No. Detector and provenance results are limited indicators, not proof of a source document, intent, authorship, or production history. A missing signal does not prove the text was not AI-generated.
What if the answer contains my idea but not my words?
Compare unusual examples, factual combinations, structure, numbers, and limitations. Document substantive overlap and assess whether your work was credited, without calling it an exact textual match.
What should I do with a close match?
Save the passages and locations, verify the citations, and report a bounded finding such as close paraphrase with missing attribution under the policy governing your work.
The Bottom Line
Preserve the record, compare exact wording and substance, verify every citation, and report only what the evidence establishes. This can document overlap or weak attribution, but it cannot prove a model’s internal production history.
