The controls differ among ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot Chat, and an answer may draw on public webpages, private work files or a model’s existing knowledge. Use the workflow below to determine what was actually sourced, whether the source supports the claim and what remains uncertain.

What counts as a source in an AI answer?
An AI system can show a clickable citation, a list labelled “Sources,” inline footnotes, or links beneath a generated summary. Those labels indicate that the system associated material with its response. They do not, by themselves, establish that the linked page contains the claimed fact, that the page is trustworthy, or that the model interpreted it correctly.
“Source” can also mean different things on different products. A web-search answer may cite a news article, government page or company announcement. A workplace assistant may cite a file in your organization. Some systems also answer from information retained in the model rather than from a newly retrieved page. Before judging a citation, establish which kind of source you are looking at and whether you can access the underlying content.

The verification workflow
Use this sequence for any answer that affects money, health, safety, legal rights, security, public affairs or a business decision. For casual facts you can stop earlier, but the same order prevents the most common citation mistakes.
1. Locate the citation controls
Look beside the sentence or paragraph for a superscript, numbered marker, linked publisher name or citation icon. Then look for a control named “Sources,” “View sources” or similar. A source panel may contain both links used in the answer and additional links the system considers relevant. Do not assume that every item in a panel supports every sentence.
- In ChatGPT responses that use web search, selecting a citation opens the associated source; on desktop web, a citation can also be previewed. A Sources view, when available, can show cited sources and other relevant links.
- Google AI Overviews present an AI-generated snapshot with links for deeper reading. The links are the route to the supporting pages, not a substitute for reading them.
- Microsoft Copilot Chat places inline citations next to generated information and provides a Sources list at the bottom of a response. Depending on the configuration, the list can contain web pages or work files.
Product names, button locations and availability can change. If a control is not visible, expand the answer, open its overflow menu, or use the product’s current help documentation rather than assuming that no source exists.

Break the answer into individual factual claims. A single paragraph may contain a date, a number, a causal explanation and a prediction; one citation at the end may not support all four. Open the particular citation attached to the claim and find the relevant passage with the page’s search function.
Ask four questions while reading:
- Does the source state the same fact, or merely discuss a related topic?
- Does it support the direction and scope of the claim? “May reduce risk” is not evidence that a measure “prevents” a problem.
- Did the answer preserve conditions, exceptions, geography, sample size, time period and uncertainty?
- Is the citation attached to the sentence that it actually supports, rather than to a nearby sentence?
Record the passage in your notes when the matter is important. This makes it easier to spot a paraphrase that quietly changes the meaning and to show colleagues exactly what you verified.
3. Check who published it
Inspect the publisher, author or issuing organization. A primary source—such as a government notice, court filing, company release, research paper or official statistics agency—is usually the best place to confirm the underlying fact. A reputable news report can be useful for context and independent reporting, but it is still a secondary account.
Check the page’s “About” information, author credentials and editorial standards when the publisher is unfamiliar. Be cautious with copied articles, anonymous posts, scraped pages and sites whose only evidence is the same AI-generated text. A professional design or a familiar logo does not establish authority.

4. Check the publication and update dates
News changes quickly. Note both the original publication date and any “updated” or “last reviewed” date. A current-looking search result may point to an older article, while an updated page may retain historical figures that no longer describe the present situation.
Compare the source date with the time period in the AI answer. A claim about an election result, product policy, outbreak, court case or software feature requires a date-specific source. OpenAI’s guidance for ChatGPT search specifically recommends reviewing publication or update dates and using authoritative material when accuracy matters.
5. Corroborate material claims
For an important statement, find a second reliable source independently. Google advises checking important information in more than one place and following supporting links or other Search results. Prefer a source with a different editorial chain—for example, an official filing plus an established news organization—rather than two pages that simply republish the same wire copy.
Agreement is useful but not conclusive. Two sites can repeat the same original error. If sources disagree, preserve the disagreement in your notes and identify why: different dates, definitions, jurisdictions, preliminary versus final figures, or genuinely conflicting evidence.
6. Treat absent, broken or suspicious citations as a warning
A response without citations may still contain a correct fact, but you have less visibility into how it was produced. A citation that leads to a missing page, an unrelated article or a search-results page is not verification. Models can generate incorrect or misleading information and can fabricate citations or references. OpenAI’s truthfulness guidance warns that a citation label does not guarantee that a reference exists or supports the answer.
Do not fill the gap by guessing the intended source. Search for the claim independently, check an authoritative publisher and ask the system to provide a precise source only as an aid to your investigation.
How to inspect citations in major AI interfaces
ChatGPT Search
When ChatGPT uses web search, citations can appear beside statements. Select a citation to open its source; on desktop web you may be able to preview it first. If a Sources control is shown, open it to distinguish sources cited in the answer from other links supplied for context.

Read the page itself, not only the preview. Confirm the article’s headline, author, publication date and relevant paragraph. Pay attention to whether the article is reporting a claim by someone else, quoting preliminary data or describing a different country or time period. OpenAI states that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so use an authoritative source and an independent check when accuracy matters.

Google describes AI Overviews as AI-generated snapshots with links to dig deeper. Select the links attached to the summary and compare each sentence with the linked material. If several links are offered, determine which one supports the exact point rather than assuming that the first or most prominent result does.
Google says AI responses may contain mistakes and recommends checking important information in more than one place. Availability and interface settings vary by supported geography and language, and the help guidance may change. If an Overview is unavailable, use ordinary Search results and apply the same source-checking procedure.
Microsoft Copilot Chat
Copilot Chat can place inline citations next to generated information and show a Sources list at the bottom of a response. Open a cited item to inspect the underlying webpage or file. A source may be public web content, material from your organization or information drawn from the model’s memory, depending on product configuration.
That context matters. A work-file citation may be authoritative for an internal policy but not for a public legal requirement. Access can vary with your account, subscription and administrator settings. Microsoft cautions that grounding and citations improve verifiability but that users should still review sources and confirm critical details.

A practical claim-to-source worksheet
For a complex answer, make a small table while you verify it. This prevents a long list of links from creating a false sense of confidence.

Mark a claim “partly supported” when the source covers only some of its qualifiers. For example, a source may confirm that an event occurred but not the AI answer’s stated cause, scale or forecast.

How to compare several cited sources
When an answer offers multiple citations, rank them on four axes rather than counting links:
- Direct support: Does the source directly answer the claim, or is it merely topically related?
- Publisher authority: Is the organization competent and accountable for this subject?
- Currency: Is the publication or update date appropriate for the claim?
- Corroboration: Does another independent, reliable source agree?
A primary source that is slightly older may be better for an original statistic, while a newer report may be better for the current status of an event. Explain that trade-off instead of choosing solely by recency.
Common citation traps and how to recover
A link is present, but the article does not say what the answer says
Reclassify the claim as unsupported and search for the fact independently. Do not stretch a nearby sentence to make the citation fit. If the answer is otherwise useful, ask the system to separate supported facts from inference and to cite each claim individually.
The source is real but the answer removes a qualifier
Restore the qualifier in your notes and in any decision based on the answer. Words such as “estimated,” “preliminary,” “in some cases,” a confidence interval or a geographic limitation can change the practical meaning. Treat the unqualified version as inaccurate even when the link itself is genuine.
The citation is broken, paywalled or inaccessible
Search the publisher’s site for the headline, an official copy, a press release or an archived public record. If you cannot inspect the relevant passage, label the claim unverified rather than relying on the citation label. A search snippet is a lead, not a substitute for the source.
Several links repeat one unsourced claim
Trace the earliest identifiable report and look for the primary evidence. Repetition across search results can reflect syndication, not independent confirmation.

The answer mixes current reporting with model memory
Separate statements that have a visible citation from statements that do not. Ask when each uncited fact was last checked, then verify it independently. Do not infer that an uncited sentence inherits the citation attached to the preceding sentence.
A work citation is mistaken for a public news source
In Copilot Chat, identify whether the cited item is a web page, internal file or another connected source. Check the file owner, version and access context. An internal memo may describe an organization’s position without proving that the position is legally or factually correct outside it.
When a citation is not enough for a decision
Escalate beyond the AI answer when the consequence of error is high. For legal questions, consult the applicable law, regulation or qualified professional. For medical questions, use current clinical guidance and a clinician. For financial or security decisions, verify figures and advisories from the responsible authority. AI citations can accelerate the search for evidence, but they do not replace the expertise or accountability required for those decisions.
Keep a record of the source version and access date when the information may change. A news page can be edited after you read it, and a platform can regenerate a different answer to the same prompt. Saving the relevant passage or document identifier makes your verification reproducible.
A short checklist before you trust the answer
- Every consequential claim has an identifiable citation or is clearly marked as unverified.
- You opened the particular source attached to the claim.
- The source actually supports the wording, scope and qualifiers.
- You checked the publisher, author and publication or update date.
- You distinguished a primary record from commentary or repetition.
- You corroborated important information independently.
- You identified whether the source came from the public web, a work system or model memory.
- You recorded unresolved disagreements, missing pages and uncertainty.
The safest interpretation is simple: a source link is an invitation to inspect evidence. It becomes useful only after the passage, publisher, date and independent support withstand that inspection.

Can I trust an AI answer if every sentence has a citation?
No. Citations improve traceability, but a model can attach a real link to the wrong claim, omit a qualifier or fabricate a reference. Open each citation and compare the exact passage with the sentence.
What should I do when two cited sources disagree?
Check their dates, definitions, geography and whether one is preliminary. Identify the primary evidence where possible, preserve the disagreement and avoid presenting a single result as settled without explaining the conflict.
Does an uncited sentence mean the AI made it up?
