Device permissions show which access the operating system allows; they do not reveal everything a provider may do with information sent to its servers. Treat the check as a consistency audit—not proof of a service’s backend behavior.
Start by defining the claim
Write down the assistant’s exact privacy statement and where you saw it, such as a product page, privacy policy, app setting, or app-store disclosure. Note the date and, where available, the app and operating-system versions. Privacy commitments can be spread across several places, and the wording matters.

Identify what the statement actually promises. “Does not listen in the background” is different from “does not retain conversations,” “does not use chats to improve models,” or “does not share data.” Also distinguish an unconditional claim from one that applies only when a particular setting is enabled.
Check the permissions the device grants
Review permissions that relate to the features you use. Depending on the assistant, these may include microphone, camera, location, contacts, photos, or files. Ask whether each permission is necessary for a feature you use, and whether access is limited to when that feature is active.

On Android, the Privacy Dashboard shows recent access to camera, location, and microphone, while Permission Manager brings sensitive permissions together. Depending on the Android version and device, controls may include one-time, while-in-use, or denied access. Location controls may offer approximate or more precise access, and Android can automatically reset permissions for apps that are unused. Exact labels and paths vary by device and version; see Android’s privacy settings and permissions overview.

Read the app’s data disclosures
Where available, review the app’s Google Play Data safety section for the developer’s disclosures about data the app accesses and uses. Treat it as a developer-provided statement, not an independent audit or a complete view of remote data handling. The Android privacy overview explains Android privacy settings and permissions.

Inspect the service’s privacy policy and account settings
Look separately for controls and explanations covering conversation storage, retention, deletion, model improvement or training, human review, sharing with service providers or other parties, and connected accounts. Check both the written policy and the assistant’s in-app or account settings: a device permission screen cannot tell you how typed chats or uploaded content are handled by the service.
The FTC advises users of voice assistants to check who can listen to recordings, review default storage and deletion settings, and check which accounts are connected. It also cautions that voice assistants usually send recordings to manufacturers’ servers and that wake-word misrecognition can happen. Those general cautions do not establish how any particular assistant currently works; verify the named service’s current policy and controls. Compare the claim with the evidence
Make a short record of what you find. Separate the permission or setting from the provider’s declared data handling, and note what remains unknown. For example:

A microphone permission may be needed for voice input without implying continuous recording. Conversely, denying microphone access does not settle how the service handles text you type into it. A mismatch worth investigating is a permission that appears unrelated to the feature you use, a setting that conflicts with a stated promise, or a policy that qualifies a claim more narrowly than the marketing language does.

Limit access and keep a dated record
- Turn off permissions you do not need. Use your device’s permission controls and choose the most limited available option for the feature.
- Review connected accounts. Remove account links you no longer want the assistant to use.
- Set available data controls. Review conversation or recording retention and deletion options, and any controls for model improvement or review.
- Save the comparison. Keep a dated note or screenshot of the claim and relevant settings if you may need to report a concrete discrepancy.
- Recheck after changes. Repeat the comparison after an app update, policy change, or change to your device settings.
What this audit can—and cannot—establish
Permissions show what access the operating system has allowed. Store disclosures, policies, and account controls describe the provider’s stated practices. None independently proves all backend data flows or legal compliance. The FTC says companies must honor privacy commitments regardless of where they made them, including promotional materials, service terms, and marketplaces. Its January 2024 guidance warns that changing terms or using consumer data for additional purposes without clear and conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent can create legal risk; it is guidance about risk, not a finding about a particular assistant. In September 2025, the FTC announced 6(b) orders to seven consumer-facing AI chatbot companies, seeking information about representations to users and parents and about data collection, handling, use, and sharing. The announcement described an inquiry, not a finding that those companies violated the law. See the FTC’s announcement.
