Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11An AI app closing at the same moment as a black screen, display reset, restart, or blue screen is a useful clue, not proof that the app is responsible. To identify the most likely trigger, record each failure, correlate it with Windows events, compare equivalent runs with the app open and closed, and use a clean boot to test for interference from other software. Only then should you consider changing the graphics driver or escalating to the app, computer, or GPU manufacturer.
First separate an app crash from a graphics-driver crash
“GPU crash” can describe several different observations. Write down exactly what happened instead of using one label for all of them:

The AI app closes or freezes
If only the app disappears, stops responding, or reports an internal error while Windows and other programs continue working, the failure may be inside the app, its model/runtime, a plug-in, or a software component it uses. It may still expose a driver problem, but the symptom alone does not establish that.
The display resets, flashes, or goes black
A brief black screen, a flicker followed by recovery, or a message that the display driver restarted is a different event from an ordinary application crash. Record whether the screen recovered without restarting Windows, whether audio continued, and whether the app remained open.

Windows restarts or shows a blue screen
An unexpected restart or stop-code screen is a system-level failure. Microsoft says unexpected restarts can involve hardware, a driver, or software, so an AI workload occurring immediately beforehand cannot assign blame by itself. Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance recommends checking the System log for critical errors in the same timeframe: Resolving Blue Screen errors in Windows.
Create an incident record before changing anything
Diagnosis becomes much harder when every crash is followed by a different driver, setting, or Windows change. Keep one row per failure and capture the following information while it is still fresh.
| Record | What to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Exact local date and time, including the time zone if you report the case elsewhere | Windows logs can then be checked against the same minute. |
| Windows | Edition, version, and build | Driver behavior and troubleshooting instructions can differ between Windows releases. |
| GPU | Graphics processor model and whether the computer is a desktop or laptop | Identifies the device and whether the computer maker may supply a customized package. |
| Graphics driver | Current driver version and date before you update, roll back, or reinstall | Preserves the before-and-after comparison. |
| AI application | Name, version, model or workflow, plug-ins, and whether it uses local GPU acceleration | Lets you reproduce the smallest workload instead of reporting only “AI use.” |
| Settings | Resolution, batch or image size, hardware-acceleration option, memory mode, overlays, and any changed preference | A single workload setting can be the trigger without making the whole app responsible. |
| Symptom | App crash, freeze, display reset, black screen, restart, or blue screen; include any stop code or on-screen message | These observations point to different diagnostic branches. |
| Recent changes | Windows update, driver installation, app update, new monitor, overclock, overlay, monitoring utility, or other startup software | A change that predates the first failure is important context. |
Where to find the basic versions
- Open Settings > System > About and copy the Windows edition, version, and build.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters. Right-click the GPU, choose Properties, and open the Driver tab. Record the provider, date, and version before making a driver change.
- Open the AI app’s About or version page and record its exact release. Note the model, plug-ins, and acceleration settings used when the failure occurred.
- Write the time down immediately after a failure. If the machine restarts, use the clock on another device or your work log so the timestamp is not guessed.
Use Event Viewer to correlate, not to declare causation
Event Viewer can show what Windows recorded near a failure. A matching timestamp strengthens the timeline; it does not prove that the event caused the crash. Microsoft’s guidance for blue screens specifically points users to critical errors in the System log around the failure time.
- Press Win+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > System. Select Filter Current Log if the list is large, and inspect the period beginning shortly before the incident and ending shortly afterward.
- Open each relevant warning, error, or critical event and save its General and Details information. Record the source, event ID, timestamp, and text rather than copying only a severity label.
- Compare several incidents. Look for a repeated sequence that occurs when the same workload fails, and note events that also appear when the AI app is not running.
Do not treat every “display,” “kernel,” or “power” entry as a diagnosis. Windows may log a consequence of the reset, a recovery action, or an unrelated background event. The strongest evidence is a repeatable sequence tied to the same workload and absent from comparable control runs.

Run a controlled app-open versus app-closed comparison
The practical test is to keep conditions as similar as possible while changing one factor: whether the AI app is running. This is an evidence-gathering comparison, not a Microsoft-certified AI-app test and not proof of root cause.
Prepare the comparison
- Reboot before a trial when practical, so a previous failed session is not part of the next test.
- Use the same Windows session type, monitor arrangement, power mode, model, input file, resolution, and workload.
- Close overlays, launchers, recorders, and monitoring tools unless the test specifically concerns one of them.
- Change one setting at a time. If you update the driver and change the model simultaneously, you cannot tell which change affected the result.
Perform and record each run
- With the AI app closed, perform the closest equivalent GPU-intensive task available to you. Record the start and end times and any display or system failure.
- Reboot if the first run changed the machine’s state, then open the AI app and repeat the same workload. Record the exact time and symptom.
- Repeat enough times to see whether the pattern recurs. One successful or failed run is weak evidence.
- After each run, check the same Event Viewer interval and add the event details to your incident log.
| Observed pattern | What it suggests | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Failure repeats only when the AI app is open, while equivalent closed-app runs remain stable | The app, its workload, or its interaction with the driver is a plausible trigger; this is the most useful pattern to send to the app vendor. | It does not prove the app is defective. A particular model, plug-in, setting, or driver path may be involved. |
| Failure occurs with and without the AI app | Look beyond the app: driver state, another startup program, Windows, power, thermals, or hardware remain possible. | It does not identify which of those possibilities is responsible. |
| Failure begins only after a driver change | The driver transition is a useful dividing line for testing rollback or a supported reinstall. | Timing alone cannot distinguish a bad package from a pre-existing hardware or software issue revealed by the new workload. |
| Different symptoms occur on different runs | Keep separate records. An app exception and a system restart may have different causes. | Do not combine them into one “AI crash rate.” |
Use a Windows clean boot to test startup-software interference
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs. It is useful when an overlay, hardware monitor, launcher, security utility, recorder, or other startup service may be interacting with the AI app or graphics stack. Microsoft’s procedure for Windows 10 and Windows 11 is documented here: How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Enter the clean-boot state
- Sign in with an administrator account. Press Win+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services accidentally.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable each enabled startup item, noting its original state.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Reproduce the smallest AI workload that previously failed. Record the same timestamps, symptom, and Event Viewer entries.
Interpret the result and restore normal startup
If the failure disappears in a clean boot, a disabled startup item or service may be interfering. Re-enable items in groups, restart, and retest; narrow the group until the conflict is identified. Re-enable items systematically rather than turning everything on at once.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft Support states: “If your app still doesn’t run as expected in a clean boot environment, then your problem is not caused by interference from another app or service.” That conclusion rules out this particular class of startup interference; it does not rule out another driver, the AI app, Windows, or hardware. When testing is finished, use msconfig to return to Normal startup and restore the services and startup entries you recorded.

Check for a graphics-device error before changing the driver
In Device Manager, a warning icon or a device status message can add evidence. Microsoft’s error-code 43 guidance says that code 43 means the graphics device driver reported that the device is not working properly; the listed possibilities include a driver or driver-software failure and a hardware problem. The linked article is written for Windows 10, so confirm that its steps still match your Windows release: Fix graphics device problems with error code 43.
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters, open the GPU’s Properties, and read Device status on the General tab.
- If Windows reports code 43 or another device error, save the current driver provider, date, and version before selecting any action.
- Use the available Update driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall device and reinstall path only when it fits your evidence. A rollback is most informative when the problem began immediately after an update; reinstalling is not a substitute for checking hardware or background interference.
- On a laptop, check the computer manufacturer’s supported package before installing a generic package. Laptop graphics switching, firmware, and power management can depend on that customized driver.
Do not remove a working driver merely because an AI app uses the GPU. Preserve the baseline first, and change one component at a time so the next comparison remains meaningful.
Get a driver from an official support source
If your evidence points toward the graphics driver, obtain the package from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel or, for many laptops, the computer manufacturer. Microsoft identifies AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA as common GPU manufacturers and provides manufacturer-resource guidance in its DirectX 12 article: DirectX 12 for Windows Subsystems.

- Match the package to the exact GPU model and Windows edition.
- Record the old and new version numbers, installation date, and whether the installer offered a clean-install option.
- Restart and repeat the same controlled workload. Do not add an unrelated app update or change several AI settings during that trial.
- If the failure remains, restore the previously working package when that is supported and safe, then continue investigating other causes rather than cycling through random versions.
Understand Code Integrity events correctly
Some users find driver-policy events and assume they are GPU timeout messages. They are not the standard signature of a graphics reset. For a policy-blocking investigation, open Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > CodeIntegrity > Operational. Microsoft’s Windows Driver Policy documentation identifies event 3076 as an audited driver and event 3077 as a blocked driver in enforcement mode: The Windows Driver Policy.

Open the event details and record the driver and process named there. A 3076 or 3077 event can explain a policy decision involving a driver, but it does not by itself show that an AI application caused a GPU timeout, display reset, or crash. Keep this branch separate from ordinary graphics-driver recovery.

Prepare an escalation packet that can be reproduced
A support team can act on a short, repeatable sequence; “it crashes during AI” is rarely enough. Send:
- Windows edition, version, and build.
- GPU model, computer model if it is a laptop, and driver provider, date, and version before and after any change.
- AI app version, model or workflow, plug-ins, acceleration settings, and the smallest input that reproduces the failure.
- For every reproduction: exact timestamp, whether the app was open or closed, the visible symptom, and whether Windows recovered, restarted, or displayed a stop code.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries with source, event ID, timestamp, and full details; include Code Integrity 3076 or 3077 details only when they are actually present.
- Results from normal startup and clean boot, plus which startup item or service was re-enabled when a conflict returned.
- A clear list of changes already tried, in chronological order, and the result of each controlled retest.
Contact the app vendor when the issue remains app-only after basic isolation. Contact the computer or GPU vendor when the failure persists without the app, a device error appears, or the logs point toward the driver or hardware. This division sends the same evidence to the party best positioned to interpret it without claiming certainty that the evidence cannot support.

The AI app may be the workload that exposes a marginal driver, another service, or hardware instability. Keep the app-only pattern as evidence, not as a verdict.
Best Value
Changing several variables at once
Updating Windows, reinstalling the driver, switching models, and disabling overlays in one session destroys the before-and-after comparison. Change one variable, reboot when appropriate, and rerun the same workload.
Reading one event as a root cause
Severity and proximity are not enough. Save the complete event details and look for a sequence repeated across controlled runs.
Overinterpreting a clean boot
A clean boot that fixes the problem identifies startup interference as a likely class of cause; it does not make the AI app innocent or guilty. A clean boot that does not fix it rules out interference from the disabled apps and services, not every driver or hardware issue.
Buying replacement hardware too early
A replacement GPU, power supply, or diagnostic accessory is not justified merely because a crash occurred during AI work. First establish whether the failure persists with the app closed, in a clean boot, and across supported driver states. Hardware action becomes more defensible only when device errors, repeated system-level failures, or vendor diagnostics provide hardware evidence.
