How to Check Whether a YouTube Video Is Age-Restricted or Removed

To check whether a YouTube video is age-restricted, sign in to an account for someone over 18, open the video on YouTube, and look below its description for an age-restriction notice. If you own the video, YouTube Studio gives a more complete answer: open Content and check Restrictions, the Age-Restriction filter, and Notices. A viewer-side “video unavailable” message does not by itself prove the video was removed.

Check for an age restriction as a viewer

YouTube says signed-in viewers over 18 can identify an age-restricted video below its description. This check depends on being signed in with an account that meets YouTube’s age requirement; a signed-out viewer or someone under 18 may be blocked without seeing the same indication. In other words, the most useful viewer-side check is not just whether playback fails: it is whether an eligible adult can see the indicator on the YouTube watch page.

  1. Sign in to YouTube with an account belonging to someone over 18.
  2. Open the video’s YouTube watch page. If you reached it through another site, use the video’s YouTube page instead.
  3. Look below the description for the age-restriction notice. YouTube’s Age-restricted content guidance identifies this as the viewer-side check.
  4. Read the result in context. An age-restriction indication means YouTube has limited the audience; it does not mean the video has been removed.

Age-restricted videos may not play on most third-party websites or embedded players; playback may instead redirect to YouTube. An embed that fails is therefore not enough to determine that a video was removed. If you are already on YouTube and the page remains unavailable, the viewer-side result may still not tell you the specific reason. (YouTube Help: Age-restricted content.)

Check a video you uploaded in YouTube Studio

Studio is the better place to identify a restriction or removal because it can show creator-facing labels and notices that are not visible to ordinary viewers. These checks require access to the account that manages the channel. If you are only a viewer, you generally cannot see the creator’s Notices or enforcement explanation, so do not assume that a creator-facing label will appear in the same way on the public watch page. The labels and interface can change, so use the notice currently shown for the video rather than relying on an old screenshot.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio with the account that manages the channel.
  2. Open Content and find the video. Confirm you have selected the relevant upload if the channel has several similar titles or versions.
  3. Inspect the Restrictions column. YouTube documents an Age-Restriction filter for locating age-restricted videos. The filter can help when you need to find affected uploads among the channel’s content rather than inspect one item at a time.
  4. Check Notices for a more specific status. An age-restricted video may show Viewable by 18+. Other notices can include Removed or Locked as private.
  5. Open the listed notice or restriction to read the explanation and any available review options. YouTube uses Terms and policies in Restrictions for content it takes down, limits, or makes private for policy or terms reasons.
  6. Use the notice to decide what to do next. An age-restriction appeal and a removal appeal are not the same route; follow the option associated with the specific status and reason.

If Studio identifies an age restriction and you believe it is mistaken, YouTube provides an appeal route through Studio. The route for appealing a removal depends on the reason given in the notice; follow that notice rather than assuming every removal has the same review process. (YouTube Help: Age-restricted content and YouTube Studio Help: Restrictions on your video and Video notices.)

Age-restricted, removed, or private: what the statuses mean

These statuses can all prevent a particular person from watching, but they describe different situations. The source of the status matters: a viewer’s playback error is less specific than a notice in the creator’s Studio account. A useful comparison is to ask four things: who may watch, whether the video remains hosted, what indication is available, and what the creator can do next.

Status What it means What a viewer may encounter Where to confirm it
Age-restricted YouTube considers the content unsuitable for viewers under 18. The video remains on YouTube, with audience and playback limits. (YouTube Help: Age-restricted content.) Signed-out viewers and viewers under 18 cannot watch. Most third-party embedded playback is unavailable or redirects to YouTube. Signed-in viewers over 18 can look below the description for the indication. The watch page for an eligible viewer; the creator can also check Studio’s Restrictions column, Age-Restriction filter, or Notices.
Removed YouTube has taken the content down. (YouTube Studio Help: Video notices.) The viewer may see an unavailable message, but that message alone does not establish that removal is the cause. The creator should check Studio for a Removed notice and read the associated explanation or enforcement information.
Locked as private The video is no longer public. It is not the same as an age gate. (YouTube Transparency Report Help Center.) Someone who has the link may see the video as unavailable. The creator should check Studio’s Notices for Locked as private.
Terms and policies A label in Studio’s Restrictions column associated with content YouTube takes down, limits, or makes private for policy or terms reasons. It is not, by itself, the full explanation. A viewer may only see that the video cannot be watched. The creator should open the Studio notice for the specific reason and any available options. (YouTube Studio Help: Restrictions on your video.)

The practical distinction is that an age restriction limits access based on age and sign-in context while the video remains on YouTube. A removal means YouTube has taken the content down. A locked-as-private notice indicates a visibility change: the video is no longer public. Those outcomes can look alike to someone who only sees a failed playback attempt, which is why the status label in Studio matters.

Why does YouTube say a video is unavailable?

“Unavailable” describes what happened during playback, not necessarily why. A video that is locked as private can appear unavailable to a link-holder, and an age restriction can block signed-out viewers, under-18 viewers, or playback on many third-party sites. A removal is another possible explanation, but the bare viewer-side message does not prove it. The available evidence depends on your role: a viewer can check the page and viewing context, while the creator can inspect the video’s Studio notice.

  • If you are an adult viewer: sign in and try the YouTube watch page. If the page shows the age notice below the description, that indicates an age restriction.
  • If the video was embedded elsewhere: open the watch page on YouTube. Third-party playback may be blocked or redirected for age-restricted content.
  • If you are signed out or under 18: a blocked video does not let you determine from that fact alone whether it is age-restricted or removed. Use the adult, signed-in watch-page check if you are eligible, or ask the channel owner to check Studio.
  • If the watch page remains unavailable: do not infer a removal solely from that result. A viewer may not be able to distinguish all causes using only the URL.
  • If you own the video: use Studio’s Restrictions and Notices to check for a specific status such as Removed, Locked as private, or Viewable by 18+.

A link is not a complete status report. It can take you to the video or show that playback is unavailable, but the information described in YouTube’s guidance does not establish that every viewer can identify every cause from the URL alone. If you need a definite answer about an upload you do not manage, the most reliable route is to ask its owner to check the creator-facing notice rather than trying to infer the cause from an error screen.

Do not confuse age restrictions with other YouTube labels

Made for kids, copyright claims, ad suitability, and Restricted Mode are separate settings or restriction types. They can affect features, audience access, or monetization in different ways, but they are not interchangeable with an age-restriction notice or a removal notice. If one of these labels appears in Studio, read its own explanation rather than treating it as proof that the video is age-restricted or removed. (YouTube Studio Help: Restrictions on your video.)

This distinction prevents a common diagnostic mistake: seeing any warning, limitation, or change in playback and treating it as the same status. For this question, look specifically for the age-restriction indication or the creator-facing removal/private notice. A different label may still matter to the channel, but it does not answer whether YouTube marked the video “Viewable by 18+,” “Removed,” or “Locked as private.”

What to do when Studio shows a restriction or removal

If Studio shows an age restriction

Read the notice in Studio. If you believe the age restriction is wrong, use the appeal option provided there. Do not assume that an unavailable viewer experience means the restriction is permanent or that the video has been taken down; the Studio status is the relevant creator-facing information. An age restriction means the video remains on YouTube but its audience and playback are limited, so handle it as an age-status question rather than a removal appeal.

If Studio shows Removed or Terms and policies

Open the notice and use the reason and review options it provides. Removal appeals depend on the stated reason, so the available steps may differ from an age-restriction appeal. “Terms and policies” is a Restrictions label associated with content YouTube takes down, limits, or makes private; read the linked or displayed explanation to learn which applies in this instance. The viewer-facing error is not a substitute for this creator notice.

If Studio shows Locked as private

Interpret this as a visibility status: the video is no longer public. It is distinct from an age gate and from a confirmed removal. Studio’s notice is more informative than what someone with the link sees. If a viewer reports that the video is unavailable, compare that report with the current Studio status rather than treating the playback failure as proof of a different enforcement action.

If Studio shows another restriction label

Read the specific label instead of mapping it to an age restriction or removal. YouTube lists other types, including Made for kids, copyright claims, ad suitability, and Restricted Mode, separately. Their effects can involve features, audience access, or monetization, and they do not by themselves establish one of the three statuses covered here. Use the explanation attached to the actual label.

A quick decision path

  1. Are you checking someone else’s video? Sign in as an adult, open the YouTube watch page, and look below the description for the age notice.
  2. Did you only try an embed? Test the YouTube watch page before drawing a conclusion; age-restricted videos may not play on most third-party sites.
  3. Is there no clear age notice, but playback is still unavailable? Treat the cause as unconfirmed. Unavailability can also occur when a video is locked as private, and it does not alone prove removal.
  4. Do you manage the channel? Open Studio, select Content, and inspect Restrictions and Notices. Look for the exact label, then open it for the explanation and available options.
  5. Does Studio identify an age restriction? Use the Studio appeal route if you believe it is mistaken. If it identifies a removal or private status, follow that particular notice instead.

This path separates what an ordinary viewer can check from what only the creator can confirm. It also avoids treating “not playable for me” as a diagnosis: age eligibility, third-party playback, removal, and private visibility are different possibilities and do not have identical creator actions.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a YouTube video is age-restricted?

Sign in with an account for someone over 18, open the YouTube watch page, and look below the description. YouTube identifies that as the viewer-side check. A creator can also check Studio’s Restrictions column, use the Age-Restriction filter, and look in Notices for wording such as Viewable by 18+.

Does “video unavailable” mean the video was removed?

No. An unavailable message by itself does not establish why the video cannot be watched. Age restrictions can prevent some viewers or third-party embeds from playing a video, and a locked-as-private video may appear unavailable to someone with its link. A creator should check Studio for a specific Removed notice.

Can I check the status using only the video URL?

Not reliably in every case. The URL may lead to an unavailable page, but YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a public viewer can distinguish all causes from the URL alone. For age restriction, use the signed-in adult check on the watch page. For a creator-facing removal or privacy status, the channel owner should inspect Studio.

Why does an embedded YouTube video fail when its watch page may still work?

Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites and may redirect viewers to YouTube. Open the video directly on YouTube and perform the signed-in adult check. A failed embed alone is not proof of removal.

What does “Locked as private” mean?

It means the video is no longer public. Someone who has the link may see it as unavailable, but this is different from an age gate. The creator can check Studio’s Notices for the Locked as private status.

What does “Terms and policies” mean in Studio?

It is a label in Restrictions associated with content YouTube takes down, limits, or makes private for policy or terms reasons. Open the notice to see the specific explanation and any available options; the label alone is not the full reason.

Are Made for kids or copyright labels the same as age-restricted?

No. YouTube lists Made for kids, copyright claims, ad suitability, and Restricted Mode separately from age restrictions. They can affect features, access, or monetization in different ways. Read the specific Studio label rather than treating it as evidence of an age restriction or removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I think an age restriction is wrong?

If you manage the video, read its Studio notice and use the appeal route provided there. If you think a video was removed in error, open its removal notice and follow the review steps for the stated reason; the process depends on that reason.

Can a removed video still be age-restricted?

These labels describe different conditions. An age-restricted video remains on YouTube with limits on who can watch it; a removed video has been taken down. Check the creator-facing Studio notice to find which status YouTube currently shows rather than inferring it from an unavailable message.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a YouTube video is age-restricted?

Sign in with an account for someone over 18, open the YouTube watch page, and look below the description. A creator can check Studio’s Restrictions column, Age-Restriction filter, or Notices for “Viewable by 18+”.

Does “video unavailable” mean the video was removed?

No. Age restrictions and locked-as-private visibility can also make playback unavailable. The creator should check Studio for a specific “Removed” notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I tell the status from the URL alone?

Not reliably in every case. A public viewer may not be able to distinguish all causes from the URL. Use the signed-in adult check for age restriction, or ask the channel owner to inspect Studio.

Why does an embedded video fail?

Age-restricted videos cannot be watched on most third-party sites and may redirect viewers to YouTube. Try the YouTube watch page; a failed embed alone does not prove removal.

What does “Locked as private” mean?

The video is no longer public. Someone with its link may see it as unavailable, but this is distinct from an age gate. The creator can confirm the notice in Studio.

What should I do if I think an age restriction is wrong?

The creator should read the Studio notice and use the appeal route provided there. A removal appeal follows the notice and depends on the stated reason.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: For a viewer-side age check, sign in as an adult and look below the YouTube video description. If you own the upload, use YouTube Studio’s Content, Restrictions, and Notices to distinguish Viewable by 18+, Removed, and Locked as private. An unavailable message alone is not enough to tell which status applies.
