Open the stream’s YouTube watch page and check its current live status and playback. That is the most direct way to tell whether a specific broadcast is live. A scheduled event page or a replay can remain available even when the broadcast is not currently running, and buffering or delay does not by itself mean the stream has ended.
Check the specific stream’s watch page
- Open the exact YouTube watch link shared by the creator. If you do not have it, visit the creator’s channel and select the relevant stream.
- Look at the page’s live status and the playback experience. Current live playback and, when enabled, live chat can help confirm that the broadcast is active. Chat may be disabled or unavailable, so its absence alone does not prove the stream has ended. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams
- If you are trying to find a stream rather than verify a known link, go to YouTube.com and select Live to browse upcoming and current streams. You can select Notify me on an upcoming stream when that option is available. For a particular broadcast, return to its watch page to check its actual status. Tell a live broadcast from a scheduled page or replay
A page for a scheduled event does not mean the broadcast has started; it may show a pre-stream trailer. After a broadcast ends, the channel may leave a replay or highlights available as videos. Account for India Standard Time
The status-check method is the same in India as elsewhere. For a scheduled stream, read the time zone shown by YouTube and convert the listed time to India Standard Time if needed. The scheduled time is only a guide: confirm the actual live state on the watch page instead of assuming the broadcast began when the clock reached that time.
Rule out playback delay or a viewer-side problem
Refresh and test playback
If the video is frozen, buffering, or not playing, refresh the page and check your connection. Try another connection, such as Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, or another supported device. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can delay live programming; a playback problem is not, on its own, evidence that the creator stopped streaming. Return to the live edge if you paused or rewound
Live DVR can let viewers pause and rewind, so your playback position may be behind the current broadcast. Resume or seek to the live edge before deciding what is happening now. Allow for latency
Latency is the time between capture and display. A viewer may see events later than they happen, and network congestion can increase delays.
