You can estimate a Windows game’s Linux compatibility before downloading it by checking four layers in order: identify whether it has a native Linux build or will run through Proton, read the game’s Steam Deck compatibility notes, inspect recent ProtonDB reports from systems like yours, and investigate title-specific launcher, anti-cheat, DRM, middleware and driver requirements. Treat every result as evidence for a particular game version and configuration—not as a guarantee for every Linux distribution or GPU.
What “works on Linux” actually means
A Windows game can reach Linux through different routes, and those routes have different failure modes. A native Linux release is built for Linux and generally does not need Proton. A Windows-only Steam game normally uses Proton, Valve’s compatibility tool for the Steam client. Valve describes the project this way: “Proton is a tool for use with the Steam client which allows games which are exclusive to Windows to run on the Linux operating system.” You can read the project description on the ValveSoftware Proton project.

“Works” also has levels. A title might start but have missing videos, broken audio, poor performance, unusable controls, a launcher that fails, or multiplayer blocked by anti-cheat. A report that says “playable” may therefore mean something different from your own standard, such as stable single-player play at your target resolution and frame rate. Before relying on any compatibility claim, decide which outcome you need:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Launch: the game opens past its launcher and reaches the main menu.
- Playability: the campaign or other intended mode runs without repeatable crashes or major missing features.
- Performance: it is acceptable on your GPU, driver, display and settings.
- Online functionality: the required multiplayer, voice, matchmaking and anti-cheat systems operate.
- Usability: text, video, audio, controllers, overlays and the launcher behave well enough for your setup.
Use the workflow below before buying or installing. It is deliberately layered: official information gives you a scoped baseline, while community reports reveal configuration details and recent breakages.

Step 1: Identify the exact game, edition and route
Search for the precise title
Search the complete title, including a remaster, definitive edition, expansion-dependent edition or separate multiplayer client. Compatibility can differ between releases that share a name. A report for an older edition is not evidence that a newer remaster will behave the same way.
On the Steam store page, look for the operating-system information and read the system requirements. Determine whether the publisher supplies a Linux build or whether the intended route is Steam Play with Proton. A native build and a Windows build running through Proton can have different patches, launchers, save locations and controller behavior, so do not merge their reports.
Record the route you plan to use
| Route | What to check | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux build | Linux system requirements, supported architecture, recent developer notes and whether the current store branch still receives updates | Evidence about that Linux build only; Windows-through-Proton reports may not apply |
| Windows build through Proton on Steam | Steam Deck compatibility details, ProtonDB reports and title-specific launcher or anti-cheat notes | Evidence for a particular Windows build, Proton version and hardware configuration |
| Non-Steam Windows build | The storefront’s Linux support, the launcher’s behavior and current community reports for that exact distribution method | Evidence limited to that launcher and installation path; Steam-specific badges do not certify it |
The broad Steam and Proton documentation does not provide a complete, current workflow for every non-Steam storefront. For a non-Steam purchase, look for reports tied to the exact launcher and game version rather than assuming a Steam result transfers.
Step 2: Read Steam’s Deck compatibility information as a scoped signal
Where to find it
Open the game’s Steam store page or library entry and read the Steam Deck compatibility section. Valve publishes the review framework in its Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review documentation. The public explanation of the labels is also available on Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page.
Use the section as an official first check for a Steam title. Read any detailed notes, not just the headline badge. Notes can identify a launcher interaction, required keyboard input, small text, a warning, or another limitation that matters to your use case.

Understand what the review does—and does not—cover
Valve’s information describes the reviewed experience on a Steam Deck. It does not certify every desktop Linux distribution, desktop environment, GPU, driver branch, monitor, controller, kernel or third-party launcher. SteamOS and a desktop installation may use different hardware and software even though both use Linux. Valve’s SteamOS page describes the operating system used for the Deck context.
A positive Deck result is therefore a useful starting signal, not a universal promise. A game can meet Deck criteria yet fail on a desktop because of a proprietary graphics driver, a different display mode, a launcher update or a missing dependency. Conversely, a title without a favorable Deck label may still run on a powerful desktop; the review’s scope is narrower than every possible Linux configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 3: Read recent ProtonDB reports that match your setup
Open the exact game page
Search the title on ProtonDB, the community database for Linux and Steam Deck gaming. Confirm that the page is for the same edition and storefront route you intend to use. Read several individual reports instead of relying only on the aggregate rating.
Prioritize recency and configuration match
Start with recent reports, especially those posted after a major game update, launcher change or Proton release. Then compare the reporter’s environment with yours. Record the details that can change the outcome:
| Report detail | Why it matters | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Game version or update timing | A patch can fix or introduce a regression | Your planned version and the report date |
| Linux distribution and desktop | Packages, kernels and display stacks differ | Distribution release, desktop session and kernel family |
| GPU and driver | DirectX translation and video features depend on the driver stack | GPU model, vendor driver and driver age |
| Proton version | Different builds contain different fixes and regressions | The version named in the report and the one Steam selects |
| Launch options or workarounds | A report may depend on a specific flag, DLL, prefix change or startup sequence | Whether you are prepared to reproduce the same steps |
| Launcher, DRM and anti-cheat | These components can fail independently of the game engine | Whether the same services are present in your edition |
| Failure description | “Does not launch” is materially different from a minor menu issue | Launch, crash, video, audio, controls, performance or online failure |
Read the report text, not just the rating
Look for repeated observations: several recent users with similar hardware reaching gameplay is stronger evidence than one old report with a high rating. A report that works only after a complicated workaround should be treated as conditional. Note whether the author tested single-player only, because online restrictions may not have been exercised.

ProtonDB is crowd-sourced evidence from individual systems. Its ratings and reports are not a universal certification, and an undated general impression is less useful than a recent report that names your distribution, GPU, driver and Proton version. Drivers, Proton releases and game updates can change the result after a report is posted.
Step 4: Investigate the blockers that compatibility badges may not reveal
Publisher launchers
Some games start a separate publisher launcher before the game itself. Check recent reports for first-run login, web-view, account-linking, update and offline behavior. A game can render correctly under Proton while its launcher fails, loops on an update or requires a workaround that later becomes obsolete.
Anti-cheat and multiplayer
Anti-cheat support is game-specific and can change when a developer enables, disables or reconfigures a service. Do not infer that all anti-cheat systems work on Linux, or that none do. Search for current reports for the exact title and multiplayer mode, and look for an official developer or vendor notice when available. A single-player campaign may work even when a protected online mode does not.
DRM and other middleware
Digital-rights-management checks, video codecs, overlays and other middleware can fail separately from the main executable. Search the title’s recent reports for the exact edition and note whether the issue affects launch, cut-scenes, audio, controller input or only a particular mode. Avoid treating a general Proton success as proof that every bundled component works.
Graphics drivers and system age
Check your driver before interpreting a report as a game defect. Valve’s Proton Requirements notes that some newer Steam Play titles need drivers newer than those shipped with the latest Ubuntu release. That warning is not a universal version number for every distribution; it means the driver supplied by your system may be too old for a particular title or graphics feature. Compare your actual driver branch with the requirements and with recent reports.

How to resolve conflicting evidence
It is normal for a Deck label, ProtonDB reports and your own hardware to point in different directions. Evaluate the disagreement using the same questions each time.
| Axis | Prefer this evidence | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Evidence tested on the same kind of machine and storefront route | A Deck review and a desktop report answer different questions |
| Recency | Reports after the latest game, launcher, Proton or driver change | Older success or failure may describe code that no longer exists |
| Configuration match | Same distribution family, GPU, driver, Proton version, display and controller | Small differences can affect translation layers and input |
| Failure type | A failure that matches your required mode deserves more weight | Single-player success does not settle an anti-cheat multiplayer question |
| Confidence | Several independent, recent reports plus an official scoped note | One anecdotal report is weaker than converging evidence |
When evidence conflicts, do not average the labels into a percentage. Identify the specific condition that separates the reports—for example, one uses a current proprietary driver while another uses an older distribution driver—and decide whether you can reproduce the working condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Steam’s per-game Proton override only when troubleshooting
If a Steam title does not start or performs poorly with the default compatibility tool, Steam Support documents a per-game override. From the game’s Library entry:
- Right-click the game, or select its gear icon, and open Properties.
- Open the Compatibility section.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the Proton version you want to test, then close the dialog and launch the game.
The setting path is described in Steam’s Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide. Before changing it, write down the previous selection and the reason for the test. Change one variable at a time, test the failure you care about, and revert if the change makes another feature worse.
Trying another Proton build is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. “Experimental” or any other version may contain a fix for one game and a regression for another; selecting it cannot repair an unsupported anti-cheat service, an incompatible launcher or an out-of-date graphics driver by itself. Check current title reports before choosing a version, and document the result so you can return to a known state.

A pre-install decision workflow
Use this sequence when you want a defensible answer before downloading a large game or committing a purchase.
- Pin down the product. Write the exact title, edition, storefront and intended mode. Include whether you need multiplayer, a specific controller or a particular display.
- Identify the Linux route. Confirm whether the store offers a native Linux build or whether you will run the Windows build through Proton.
- Read the official Steam Deck section. Capture the displayed status and every note. Treat it as evidence about the reviewed Deck experience, not your desktop in general.
- Check ProtonDB. Read multiple recent reports for the same edition. Record distribution, GPU, driver, Proton version, launch options and failure type.
- Search blockers. Look specifically for the game’s launcher, anti-cheat, DRM, video or middleware. Verify the online mode separately from the campaign.
- Check drivers. Compare your driver age with Valve’s Proton requirements and with the working reports you found.
- Classify the result. Decide whether the evidence supports launch only, reliable play, acceptable performance or the complete feature set you require.
- Plan a reversible test. If you proceed with Steam, keep the default compatibility setting initially. Only use a per-game override after checking current reports, and record every change.
Classify your confidence before installing
| Confidence level | Evidence pattern | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| High for your stated use | Recent reports from closely matching hardware and software, no unresolved launcher or online blocker, and official Deck notes consistent with your needs | Reasonable to install, while keeping expectations tied to that configuration |
| Conditional | Game runs only with a named Proton version or workaround, or reports cover single-player but not your required online mode | Install only if you can reproduce the workaround and accept the limitation |
| Uncertain | Reports are old, sparse, tied to different hardware, or disagree after a recent update | Wait for newer title-specific evidence or test under a reversible setup |
| Low for your use | Recent matching reports show repeatable launch failure, an unresolved launcher or DRM problem, or a required online mode blocked by anti-cheat | Do not assume a different badge or Proton version will solve it |
This classification is about the evidence you found, not a permanent rating for the game. Revisit it after a major game patch, Proton release, launcher update or driver change.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Reading only the aggregate ProtonDB label: the summary hides hardware, date and workaround details.
- Treating Deck Verified as desktop certification: the review is scoped to the Deck experience.
- Using a report for the wrong edition: remasters, multiplayer clients and regional builds can differ.
- Ignoring the launcher: the game engine may work while the login or update component does not.
- Assuming single-player proves multiplayer: anti-cheat and server checks can apply only to online modes.
- Copying old launch options blindly: a workaround can become unnecessary or harmful after an update.
- Blaming Proton for a stale driver: newer Steam Play titles may require a driver newer than the one shipped with your distribution.
- Changing several settings at once: without recording the previous state, you cannot tell which change helped or how to undo it.
What you can conclude before the download
You can make a strong, configuration-specific forecast without installing the game: establish the exact release and route, use Valve’s Deck information for its intended scope, corroborate it with recent ProtonDB reports, and investigate the title’s own launcher, anti-cheat, DRM, middleware and driver requirements. The result should be a statement such as “recent users with this distribution, GPU, driver and Proton version report stable single-player play, but online compatibility is not established,” rather than an unconditional yes or no.
