Before buying a Windows 11 Pro license, verify who is selling it, confirm the license is for Pro, and ask for purchase evidence that matches how the license is being provided. Keep the receipt and any key or Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Most importantly, do not treat an activation screenshot as proof that a license is genuine: Microsoft says activation does not evaluate authenticity or guarantee that Windows is genuine.
What to check before paying
- Verify the seller. Prefer Microsoft or a retailer whose business identity and authorization you can independently establish. Microsoft describes buying from Microsoft or a store you know and trust as the safest option in its About Genuine Windows guidance. Check the seller’s legal or business name, return terms, and whether it will issue an itemized order confirmation. Microsoft’s guidance does not provide a current directory of authorized sellers, so a listing or marketplace label alone does not establish authorization.
- Confirm it licenses Windows 11 Pro. A Home license does not license Pro. Ask the seller to identify the edition in writing, and match the evidence to Pro specifically. Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance explains that Home and Pro digital licenses are distinct; if the installed edition does not match the license, you need the licensed edition or an upgrade.
- Ask what original evidence comes with the license. A legitimate purchase may use a product key or a digital license, depending on the purchase route. The expected evidence differs by route; see the comparison below.
- Get the terms and record in writing. Save the seller’s description, order confirmation, receipt, return policy, and any key or COA information. A seller’s willingness to provide this evidence does not by itself prove genuineness, but it gives you a clear record if the license is challenged or the sale needs to be reversed.
What evidence to expect for each purchase route

Microsoft’s descriptions of key locations and license types are in its product-key guidance and activation guidance. A 25-character key is not the only sign of a legitimate purchase: some purchases use a digital license instead.

Why activation does not prove a license is genuine
Activation is a technical check that associates a product key or digital entitlement with a device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft explicitly says this process does not evaluate whether the copy is authentic and does not guarantee that Windows is genuine. A key can activate and still have been improperly sourced or used on more devices than its license allows.

How to check an installed copy in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Review the activation status and the activation method shown. Windows may be activated with a product key or a digital license.
- Compare the installed edition with the license evidence you received. For example, a Pro installation is not evidence that your purchase receipt or digital entitlement covers Pro.
This check is useful for understanding the device’s current status, not for validating the seller’s license chain. If you replace major hardware such as the motherboard, a digital license association may be affected. Linking a digital license to a Microsoft account can help with reactivation through the troubleshooter after a significant hardware change, but reactivation is separate from proving that the original sale was genuine.
Warning signs that need more scrutiny
- The seller will not identify its business or explain whether the offer is retail, digital, preinstalled, refurbished, or tied to a particular PC.
- The seller cannot explain how you will receive the license evidence for that purchase route, or refuses to provide an itemized confirmation.
- The offer describes a Windows license without specifying the edition, or the evidence identifies Home when you need Pro.
- The seller relies only on a screenshot showing Windows is activated as proof of genuineness.
- A used or refurbished PC is offered without identifying the refurbisher or providing the license evidence associated with that device.
These are reasons to pause and seek clarification, not a way to determine authenticity from price or one listing detail alone. Microsoft’s guidance does not set a price threshold that separates genuine from counterfeit licenses. If the seller’s answers and documentation do not resolve the questions, choose a source you can verify instead.

What to do if a key fails or Windows reports an activation problem
First, check that the installed Windows edition matches the license and that you entered the key correctly. Activation can fail if a key has already been used on more devices than permitted, including in some pre-owned-PC cases. Keep the error message, order record, and seller correspondence, then use the seller’s stated return or support terms. Microsoft’s activation-error guidance describes common activation issues. An activation error is not by itself proof of counterfeiting, just as successful activation is not proof of genuineness.

Where to check Microsoft’s authenticity guidance
Microsoft recommends its How to Tell site for information about genuine and counterfeit Windows. For purchases, its guidance is to buy from Microsoft or a store you know and trust; when buying a PC, establish the seller’s identity and what license evidence comes with that specific device. No single visual check, key format, or activation status can replace a trustworthy seller and a documented purchase.
