Use Start > Settings > System > Activation. The decisive confirmation is the message “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” That wording confirms both that Windows is activated and that the digital license is associated with your Microsoft account.
An activated copy can also show “Windows is activated with a digital license”. That means activation succeeded, but the account-link requirement has not been confirmed. The instructions below explain how to distinguish the two states, link an eligible account, and handle activation errors.

What you need before checking
You do not need to install another utility, buy a product, or find a product key just to read Windows’ activation status. The check is built into Windows 11 Settings. Have access to an administrator profile if you expect to link an account or run the Activation troubleshooter.
If you are checking a Pro entitlement, identify the installed edition as well as the activation state. A device can be activated while running Windows 11 Home, which is not the same result as activating Windows 11 Pro. The edition appears on the Activation page and should match the license you are trying to verify.

Activation and Microsoft-account association are separate facts. A Microsoft account can be used on a PC without the digital license being linked to that account. The complete status sentence, not merely the presence of an account or the words “digital license,” is the reliable confirmation.
Open the Windows 11 activation page
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System in the left sidebar.
- Select Activation.
Read the status shown on that page. If you are checking a Windows 11 Pro license specifically, confirm that the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro before interpreting the license message. Microsoft documents the activation states and account-linking procedure in its Windows activation guidance.
Do not stop at the first line you see. Read the full sentence and any error details beneath it. The wording tells you whether activation succeeded, whether account association is confirmed, and whether Windows has presented a problem that needs troubleshooting.

Windows uses different wording for activation and for account association. Use the complete sentence rather than assuming that any mention of a digital license means the account is linked.

The exact linked-license sentence is the simplest single check because it reports both conditions at once. An account may be present on the PC without the license itself being linked, so do not treat a Microsoft account sign-in alone as proof of the linked status.
Why the wording matters
“Activated” describes whether Windows has a valid activation entitlement for the installed system. “Linked to your Microsoft account” describes whether that entitlement is associated with the account for account-based recovery and reactivation. The first message confirms only the first condition; the longer message confirms both. This distinction prevents a common mistake: assuming that entering an email address somewhere in Windows automatically linked the license.
Link an activated license to your Microsoft account
Use these steps when the page says that Windows is activated with a digital license but does not include the words “linked to your Microsoft account.” You must be signed in with administrator privileges.

1. Confirm that the administrator account is a Microsoft account
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts > Your info.
- Check the account details above the Administrator label. Microsoft says an email address is displayed there for a Microsoft account.
If the administrator profile is a local account, the Activation page cannot use it for this account-association step. Sign in with an administrator Microsoft account before continuing. Merely adding a Microsoft account as a secondary identity does not replace the requirement to perform the linking action from Activation.
2. Add the account from Activation
- Return to Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Add an account.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want associated with the digital license.
After sign-in completes, return to the Activation page and read the status again. Successful association should change the wording to “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” These account-linking steps are documented by Microsoft at Activate Windows.
What linking does—and does not do
Linking records the relationship between the activated digital license and your Microsoft account. It does not convert a Windows 11 Home installation into Windows 11 Pro, and it does not by itself activate an installation that has no valid license. Edition and activation problems must be resolved separately.
There is no separate fee or accessory required for this check or for the account-association step. You use the existing Settings page and an eligible Microsoft account. If the page remains on the shorter activated message after sign-in, reread the account type and administrator status, then check the page again rather than assuming the association succeeded.
If Windows says it is not activated
When the status is Windows is not activated, use the error code or message displayed on the page to choose the next action. Microsoft’s recommended sequence is to confirm that the device is running Windows 11, try the Activation troubleshooter, and then investigate the current error code. Check whether the installed edition matches the license
A Windows 11 Pro license cannot be assumed to activate Windows 11 Home. If the device has Windows 11 Home installed while the license is for Pro, this is an edition mismatch. Correct the edition or use the appropriate license path before expecting activation; adding a Microsoft account will not make the wrong edition activate.
Edition checking should happen early because repeated sign-ins or repeated key attempts cannot correct a mismatch. First record exactly what the Activation page identifies as the installed edition. Then use Microsoft’s instructions for the applicable edition and error instead of treating the account-link process as an upgrade mechanism.

Run the Activation troubleshooter when available
- The troubleshooter is intended for an installation that is currently not activated.
- It requires administrator access.
- If Windows is already activated, Microsoft says the troubleshooter is not available for this purpose.
- Follow the choices it presents and then recheck the Activation status.
Microsoft explains the availability and administrator requirement in Using the Windows Activation troubleshooter. If the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, retain the displayed error code when following Microsoft’s error-specific instructions.

The troubleshooter is not a substitute for a license. It helps Windows examine an activation problem and, where applicable, offers a route to use an account-associated entitlement. If the page reports no valid license or an edition mismatch, follow that specific guidance rather than expecting the troubleshooter to create an entitlement.
When a product key might matter
Only look for a key when the purchase route or the displayed error specifically calls for one. Searching for a key is not part of the normal status check, and a digital-license purchase may not have a key for you to enter. Keep the exact error text if you need to continue with Microsoft’s troubleshooting sequence.
Reactivation after a significant hardware change
A substantial hardware change can cause Windows’ digital license to stop matching the device. Microsoft identifies the account association as useful in this situation because it lets you use the Activation troubleshooter to attempt reactivation.
- Verify that the Microsoft account is linked by looking for the complete linked-license message on Settings > System > Activation.
- After the hardware change, open the Activation page and use the troubleshooter if Windows reports that it is not activated.
- When prompted, sign in with the linked Microsoft account and follow the reactivation choices.
Account linkage improves the reactivation path, but it is not a guarantee that every hardware change will qualify. Microsoft’s hardware-change procedure is described at Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
If the device was already showing the linked message before the change, that is useful evidence that the entitlement was associated with the account. If it was not linked, do not claim that the account association solved the mismatch retroactively; first resolve the current activation state and follow the hardware-change instructions that apply.
What counts as a useful reactivation check
After the troubleshooter finishes, return to the same Activation page and read the new status. A successful result should produce an activated message; if account association is confirmed, it should include the complete linked wording. If Windows remains unactivated, record the new error and edition, because those details determine the next Microsoft-supported step.

Digital license versus product key
The Activation page is checking an activation method, not asking you to display a key. A digital license is an activation method that does not require entering a product key. A product key is a 25-character code used by some purchase and installation routes.

The page shows an activated digital license without “linked”

You are unsure which account is linked
Return to Settings > Accounts > Your info and identify the administrator Microsoft account shown there. Then verify the complete linked-license sentence on Activation. Do not infer the answer from another account that happens to be listed elsewhere in Windows.
