Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before opening a link, inspect its full destination. Check that it begins with https:// and that the hostname is the organization you intended. If your browser later shows a certificate or secure-connection warning, stop rather than bypassing it. HTTPS protects a connection to a domain; it does not prove the site is legitimate or safe.
Check the link before you open it
- Reveal the destination. On a desktop, hover over the link to preview its address, or right-click and choose the option to copy its link address. On a phone or tablet, press and hold the link and use the available preview or copy option without opening it. Browser menus differ, so these are general methods rather than identical steps for every device.
- Inspect the full URL. Paste a copied address into a plain-text field if that makes it easier to read. Confirm that the URL starts with
https://. - Check the hostname. Read the domain carefully, including its spelling and any words or subdomains before it. A familiar company name appearing somewhere in a longer address does not by itself mean the address belongs to that company. If it looks unexpected, verify the address through a known channel.
- Use a safer route if you cannot verify it. If the link is shortened or its destination cannot be inspected, do not rely on it for signing in or paying. Use a bookmark you already trust or enter the organization’s known address yourself.
This check tells you that the link requests an HTTPS connection. It cannot guarantee how the server will respond when you connect.
What HTTPS tells you—and what it does not
HTTPS uses TLS to encrypt traffic in transit, detect modification, and authenticate the server with a certificate associated with the domain. As MDN Web Docs puts it, “TLS secures a network connection in three ways: Encryption, Integrity, and Authentication.” MDN’s TLS guide explains how certificates let a browser authenticate a server for a domain.
That connection protection is not a trust rating for the website’s owner or content. A phishing site can use a lookalike hostname and HTTPS, so its connection is protected even though it is not the organization you meant to visit. Check the actual domain especially carefully before entering account details, payment information, or a password-reset code. MDN’s phishing overview describes how deceptive sites use similar-looking domains.

What to do if the browser warns about the connection
If the browser displays a certificate or secure-connection warning after you open a site, do not click through to a sign-in or payment page. The browser has not established the expected secure connection. Close the page and reach the organization through a known address or contact method instead.
HSTS is a policy that tells a browser to use HTTPS for a site. For hosts covered by HSTS, certificate errors cannot be bypassed in the browser; some sites can also be included in browser preload lists. HSTS does not apply to every site or protect every first visit. See MDN’s HSTS documentation.

Why mixed content is a different check
A page can load its main document over HTTPS and still request some resources over HTTP. This is called mixed content. It is a separate, after-load concern—particularly for site owners auditing a page—and does not change the basic pre-visit check: inspect the destination scheme and hostname. MDN explains mixed content and ways to investigate it in its mixed-content guide.
