A quick inspection can expose obvious faults, but it cannot certify a vintage film camera as fully working. Check its body, lens, shutter, film path and meter in person; for the strongest practical evidence, run format-compatible film through it and inspect the developed results before committing to the purchase.
What to ask the seller first
Ask when the camera was last used or serviced, which functions were tested, and whether the seller has sample negatives. Ask whether you can run a test roll and whether there is a return period long enough to have it developed. “Untested” means the condition is unknown; it is not evidence that the camera works.

If the seller says it was tested, ask what that involved. A shutter firing or a meter needle moving is narrower evidence than a camera successfully exposing and transporting film.

Inspect the body and film compartment
Body, controls and mount
Look for cracks, major dents, loose panels, corrosion, a damaged film door or latch, and a bent or loose lens mount. Check that controls are present and move without force. A camera that looks clean externally may still have internal faults.
#1 Best Overall
- 📷 Film-saving: You can have twice as many images per roll. For example, a film roll with 36 exposures can yield around 72 half-frame photos - doubled!
- 📷 Lightweight and Easy-to-use: The pocket-size camera is light and tiny, and hence convenient for you to bring along daily. Since its instructions are simple, it is suitable for all analog hobbyists.
- 📷 Built-in Flash: Turning on the flash by adjusting the silver ring around the lens so that you can use KODAK EKTAR H35 during days and nights, outdoor and indoor.
- 📷 Perfect for Beginners: The point-and-shoot camera is easy to use for new analogue hobbyists.
- 📷 Five colors: Off-white, black, brown, sage and sand. Neat and natural.
Film path, seals and bellows
Open the back and inspect the pressure plate, take-up spool, sprockets, hinge, latch and visible light seals. If the camera has bellows, examine the folds in subdued light for pinholes or damage. Deteriorated seals or bellows may need repair, but appearance alone does not establish whether they will cause leaks on film. Ask for a repair assessment or factor possible repair into the price.
Check the lens and aperture
In good light, look through the lens for haze, fungus-like growth, scratches or separation. Turn the focus ring through its range. If the aperture can be operated with the lens mounted or removed, check that its blades move rather than stick; visible oil or sluggish movement is a warning. Ordinary dust is not the same as fungus, and a visual inspection cannot prove image quality or focus accuracy.
Rank #2
- Shutter Speed: The AE-1 offers a range of shutter speeds from 1/1000 to 2 seconds, along with a Bulb mode for long exposures, allowing for creative control over your shots.
- TTL Metering: Its built-in Through-The-Lens (TTL) metering system ensures accurate exposure readings, helping you capture the perfect shot in various lighting conditions.
- Interchangeable Lenses: Compatible with Canon FD lenses, the AE-1 opens up a world of photographic possibilities, from wide-angle to telephoto.
- Auto and Manual Modes: With both automatic and manual exposure settings, photographers can easily switch between point-and-shoot convenience and hands-on control.
- Durable Design: The camera features a robust metal body and a sleek, classic aesthetic, making it not only functional but also a stylish accessory.
Operate the shutter and film controls
Shutter
Where the camera permits, cock and fire it at several marked speeds, including a slow and a fast setting. With the back open, observe the shutter against a bright, even source if the design makes that possible. Look for complete, repeatable travel and listen for gross inconsistency. Sound and appearance are only rough checks: they do not measure exposure time or prove that every speed is accurate. Do not force controls or bypass model-specific interlocks.
Advance, frame counter and rewind
Advance and fire several times. Note whether the lever or knob moves smoothly, the frame counter changes as expected, and the rewind control turns appropriately. Some cameras need film loaded or a particular release procedure before a control will move; consult the model manual before deciding that a locked control is broken. A dummy roll can help check whether take-up and sprockets engage, but only a real roll can reveal issues such as frame spacing, scratches and unreliable transport under use.

Check the meter and battery
Find the exact battery requirement for the camera before fitting a cell. Inspect the battery compartment and contacts for leakage or corrosion. With the correct battery installed, point the camera at brighter and darker scenes and see whether the meter indication changes. Comparing it with a known-good meter or app at the same scene and settings can provide a rough reference; it does not calibrate the camera meter or verify shutter timing.
Test special features you intend to use
If a self-timer, flash connection or special mode matters to you, operate it before buying and verify compatibility for that camera model. Do not assume a feature works because its control or socket is present.
Rank #4
- 35mm Film Format: The Rebel 2000 uses standard 35mm film, providing compatibility with a wide range of film types and offering the classic film photography experience.
- Autofocus System: It features a 7-point autofocus system, which helps in achieving accurate and quick focus on subjects, even in challenging shooting conditions.
- Built-In Flash: The camera includes a built-in pop-up flash, which can be used for additional lighting in low-light situations or as a fill flash to soften shadows.
- Exposure Modes: Program AE, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual Mode
- Film Transport: It features automatic film loading, advancing, and rewinding, simplifying the process of handling film.
Use a test roll for stronger evidence
A developed test roll is the best practical way to check film transport, look for light leaks, and see whether exposures are broadly consistent. Use film made for the camera’s format: 35mm film will not test a camera designed for another format. Include varied lighting and, where practical, exposures using different shutter settings.

A test roll is not a calibrated shutter-bench test, and it may not establish focus accuracy; that can require a deliberate subject and suitable inspection of the resulting image.

If testing before purchase is not possible, ask for a written description of what was actually checked, any available sample results and a return period long enough to test the camera. If there is no return option and the camera is valuable—or accurate shutter performance matters—consider a qualified repair technician’s assessment rather than treating a dry inspection as proof.
Decide whether to buy, negotiate or walk away
| What you find | Practical response |
|---|---|
| The shutter does not fire, travel appears incomplete, controls are seized, corrosion is severe, or the body or back will not close. | Walk away or seek a substantial discount only if you are prepared for repair risk. |
| Seals are deteriorated, the aperture is sluggish, the meter is intermittent, battery damage is uncertain, or transport feels abnormal. | Ask for a repair assessment or price the camera with a possible repair in mind. The remedy and cost depend on the model and parts availability. |
| Major controls operate consistently, no obvious serious lens or film-compartment defect is visible, and a developed test roll shows no unexplained exposure or transport problems. | This is stronger evidence, not a guarantee. Do not describe an untested camera as fully working based only on appearance. |
Compare the camera on functional evidence, repairability and parts availability, total cost including film and service, and fit for the format and use you have in mind. Vintage designs differ, so use the manufacturer’s manual where available and compare like with like.
