A short preview can catch problems; only a longer rehearsal can show whether the playback process and stream stay stable through a loop.
What “ready” means for a continuous stream
A file can have a familiar extension and still be missing audio, contain an unreadable section, or fail at the point where the player loops it. Readiness has several parts: the file can be read and decoded; its picture and sound are suitable for the planned stream; the playout application handles the loop cleanly; and YouTube receives a stable, audible feed.

Keep file checks separate from live encoder settings. YouTube’s live guidance specifies how an encoder should send a stream; it does not define a universal file-corruption test or certify that a source file will loop unattended for 24 hours.
1. Inspect the file’s actual streams
Use a trusted media probe such as FFprobe to inspect the container and format, duration, and every video and audio stream. FFprobe documents its ability to display multimedia stream and format information: FFprobe documentation.

Check that the file contains the intended video and audio tracks, and note the following before configuring playout:
- Container and video/audio codecs—not just the filename extension.
- Duration, image dimensions, and frame rate.
- Audio codec, sample rate, channel layout, and whether the track is present.
- Whether the reported streams match what you expect to play.
A probe reports metadata; it does not prove every frame and audio packet can be decoded. Do not treat a clean metadata listing as a pass.
2. Decode and review the whole file
Play or decode the entire file, not just the opening seconds. Watch and listen for damaged or missing sections, unexpected black gaps or frozen frames, unintended silence, clipping, and audio that drifts out of sync with the picture. There is no universal automated pass threshold for these checks in the cited YouTube guidance, so assess the result against the content and stream you intend to run.

If you are choosing between export versions, compare successful full-file playback, dimensions and frame rate, audio presence and audibility, and how the picture and sound hold up at the intended live settings.
3. Test the end-to-start loop in your actual playout setup
If the stream will repeat the file, test the transition using the same player or playout application that will be used for the continuous stream. Watch and listen across several end-to-start transitions. Look for a blank interval, a stuck frame, an audio pop, an unintended pause, or a change in audio level.
The test must use your chosen playout application: the file alone cannot show how that software handles looping. The title does not imply a particular player or automation tool, and YouTube’s encoder guidance does not prescribe one.

4. Match the outgoing feed to YouTube Live guidance
For a live encoder workflow, use YouTube’s current live settings page, not its separate recommendations for uploaded videos. The live page currently specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a stream; platform guidance can change.
The same live guidance gives these H.264 recommended encoder bitrates. They are live-ingestion recommendations, not tests for whether a source file is corrupt, and not a guarantee that your available upload bandwidth is sufficient:

YouTube’s advanced live recommendations also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 44.1 kHz stereo (48 kHz for 5.1). Consult the current live settings page for applicable ranges and details, including codec-specific values.

Do not substitute upload recommendations for live ingestion settings. YouTube’s separate upload-encoding page recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR H.264 at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps), and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). These are upload recommendations, not live encoder targets or file-readability criteria. The upload page also describes MP4, Fast Start, and other upload-oriented settings; its listed features are identified as available to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager. 5. Verify the YouTube preview and event
- Start a test through the same playout and encoder path you plan to use. YouTube recommends testing before going live and matching test audio and movement to the planned stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for stable picture and audible sound. A test can be public or unlisted; choose unlisted if you do not want a public test. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Confirm the event is reachable from the channel and watch page, and check it on a mobile device.
- If you are recording a local archive, verify that the archive is intact. Keep monitoring audio and video after the stream begins.
YouTube’s tips recommend testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. A static image or silent test will not reveal problems that occur only with motion or sound.
6. Rehearse for the intended run length
A brief preview cannot prove 24-hour continuity. Where practical, run an extended rehearsal that reaches at least one complete file loop. Check that the playout process continues, the stream remains healthy, and the source storage, power, and network remain available. This is an operational check for your setup, not a YouTube-mandated rehearsal duration or a guarantee against later interruptions.

Troubleshoot common readiness failures
