1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou cannot verify that a used MacBook Air is not stolen with a serial-number lookup. Before paying, have the seller remove the Mac from their Apple Account and Find My, erase it, and let you connect it to the internet and complete setup far enough to confirm that neither a previous-owner Activation Lock nor organization enrollment blocks you.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
| Check | What it establishes | Who can resolve a problem |
|---|---|---|
| Activation Lock | Whether the Mac is still associated with a prior owner through Find My. If enabled, the Apple Account password or device passcode is required to turn off Find My, erase the Mac, or reactivate it. | The prior owner must turn off Find My or remove the Mac from their account. Apple describes an Activation Lock support request, but a buyer should not assume Apple will unlock a second-hand Mac based only on an intermediary sale. Apple’s Activation Lock for Mac guidance explains the lock and removal options. |
| Organization management | Whether a school or employer still has the Mac assigned to organization-managed setup. This is separate from a seller’s personal Apple Account and Activation Lock. | The organization or its administrator must release the Mac from management or enrollment. A wipe alone is not a reliable fix. |
| Apple Check Coverage | Coverage and benefits associated with the entered serial number, including warranty status and AppleCare eligibility—not lawful ownership, Activation Lock status, or management status. | It does not resolve either lock. Use Apple Check Coverage only for coverage information. |
Apple says Activation Lock is designed to prevent others from using a Mac if it is lost or stolen. That protection is useful, but it is not a public stolen-device registry. A recognized serial number or a coverage result does not prove that the seller owns the Mac or has the right to sell it.

Before meeting the seller
- Ask the seller to confirm they can sign out of their Apple Account and turn off Find My, and that they will erase the Mac and let you test online setup before payment.
- Ask whether the Mac ever belonged to a school, employer, or other organization. If it did, ask the seller to confirm that the organization has released it from management.
- Ask for a purchase record that matches the device and seller. This is a prudent transaction check, not an Apple guarantee or a legal determination.
Check the Mac in person, before paying
- Compare the serial numbers. Find the serial shown in macOS and compare it with the serial on the machine and any purchase record. A match helps confirm that the records refer to the same device; it does not establish clean ownership or lock status.
- Have the seller turn off Find My or sign out. Ask the seller to do this in front of you in System Settings, or to remove the Mac from their account. Apple’s guidance says signing out removes Activation Lock. For a remotely managed removal, the seller must complete the erase-and-removal steps; do not treat a promise to do it later as proof of release. See Apple’s steps for removing a device from Find My on Mac.
- Have the seller erase the Mac. On Apple silicon or T2 Macs running macOS 12 or later, Apple’s Erase All Content and Settings (Erase Assistant) process signs out of Apple services, turns off Find My and Activation Lock, erases the Mac, and ends at the Hello screen. Follow Apple’s Erase your Mac instructions. Other Macs use Apple’s separate erase-and-reinstall process; reaching the Hello screen after an erase is not, by itself, proof that every lock or enrollment issue is resolved.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and continue setup. Proceed far enough to check whether the Mac asks for a previous owner’s credentials or presents an unexpected organization-management enrollment screen. Stop if either appears and ask the seller or organization to resolve it before you pay. A clean desktop or successful login before erasing cannot establish that online setup will be free of organization enrollment.
- Check Device Management when available. On macOS 13 or later, open System Settings > General > Device Management. Apple says a supervised and managed Mac can show “This Mac is supervised and managed by [Organization name].” If you see that message, do not proceed unless the organization releases the Mac and you can verify setup afterward. See Apple’s supervision guidance.
For organization-managed Macs, enrollment can be associated with Apple School Manager or Apple Business and an MDM service. Apple describes this organization-linked control separately from personal Activation Lock in its Activation Lock deployment guidance. A successful wipe or an unlocked desktop is not a substitute for verifying that no organization enrollment blocks setup.
Can you check a Mac serial number to see if it’s stolen?
Apple’s public Check Coverage page accepts a serial number to show coverage and benefits. Apple’s privacy information says serial numbers entered there are used to confirm warranty status and AppleCare eligibility. Neither page presents the service as a stolen-device, Activation Lock, or management-status lookup: Apple Support App & Privacy.

There is no public stolen-Mac lookup established by these Apple services. Treat the serial as an identity cross-check, not a clearance certificate. Pair it with a matching purchase record and, most importantly, a successful seller-assisted release and online setup check.
What to do if the Mac is locked or managed
- Previous-owner Activation Lock prompt: Do not pay or accept a promise to remove it later. The prior owner must remove the Mac from Find My or their Apple Account. If the seller cannot do this, walk away.
- Remote Management or organization enrollment: Ask the seller to have the school, employer, or other controlling organization release the device. Do not rely on erasing it to clear the assignment; repeat online setup after release.
- Seller suggests a bypass: Do not use bypass utilities, serial alteration, or management-evasion methods. They do not establish lawful ownership and can leave the Mac unusable or insecure.
When to complete the purchase
Pay only after the seller has released personal Find My/Activation Lock, erased the Mac, and you have confirmed it can proceed through internet-connected setup without a previous-owner credential request or unresolved organization enrollment. If the seller cannot demonstrate that state, the safest transaction rule is not to buy that unit.
