This can help identify a model, but IKEA’s published guidance does not describe a universal test that proves every secondhand item is genuine.
Where to look for labels and numbers
Photograph the whole item and take close-ups of every sticker, plate, or stamp before moving or taking it apart. Check the underside, back, and less visible surfaces. Label placement varies; IKEA Germany says a five-digit manufacturer code is usually on a plate or label attached to the product, with examples including under a chair or on the back of a cabinet (IKEA Germany’s guidance on manufacturer codes).

Copy every marking exactly, including punctuation and leading zeroes. Depending on the product, you may find a model name, article or item number, manufacturer code, serial number, date stamp, or country-of-manufacture information. Not every item will have every field.
Know which identifier you have
- Product name: Identifies a named design or family, but a name can cover different sizes, finishes, configurations, or generations.
- Article or item number: An IKEA product identifier. IKEA Austria says it appears below the product name or in the product details on a product page, and can help locate an item or handle an order or complaint (IKEA Austria’s article-number guidance).
- Manufacturer code, serial number, or date code: Markings on a physical label or plate; the fields vary by product. They can be useful when asking IKEA about safety or support.
- Spare-part number: Identifies a component, not the complete product. IKEA US says small hardware items may have six-to-eight-digit spare-part identifiers in assembly instructions; larger furniture components do not use that same identifier (IKEA US guidance on spare parts).
Find the matching IKEA model
- Search IKEA’s official site by article number first. If you do not have one, try the product name. Check the product page and its details for the article number and description.
- Compare the listing with the physical item. Check dimensions and configuration, then finish or material and hardware layout. Names alone can match multiple variants.
- Open the assembly documents. IKEA Ireland says instructions can be found from product pages, or searched by product name or article number under Product details and Assembly and documents (IKEA Ireland’s assembly-instruction guidance). Compare the diagrams, overall form, parts, and configuration with the item. Instruction availability can vary for discontinued products and between national IKEA sites.
- Use the markings as a cross-check. Where available, compare date or manufacturer markings with the product information and documents. Treat an apparent match as supporting identification, not proof by itself.
If several models remain plausible, prioritize the exact article number, followed by dimensions and configuration, finish and material, hardware layout, and then date or manufacturer markings and instruction diagrams. This is a practical comparison order, not an IKEA scoring rule.

For IKEA appliances, check the rating plate
IKEA US says an appliance’s rating plate usually appears inside the appliance and lists the manufacturer name, model, and serial number. Record those details for a product-support or parts inquiry. If the plate is missing, unclear, or inconsistent with the item, ask IKEA or the appliance maker to help identify it.
Check for recalls after identifying the item
Use the recall page for the relevant country or market, since notices and instructions can be market-specific. IKEA directs customers to current and past recalls on its website (IKEA US recalls; IKEA UK recalls). Follow the notice for the identified product. Some recalls depend on a particular date code or physical feature; do not apply one product’s criteria to unrelated items.

What can—and cannot—confirm genuineness
A label, IKEA-style logo, or resemblance to a known design is not conclusive on its own. The official guidance supports using physical markings, IKEA product records, and assembly documents to identify a likely model; it does not describe a universal authentication database, security feature, or test that certifies every used IKEA product. Unless IKEA confirms the item directly, the careful description is that it is “consistent with” the identified IKEA model.

Contact IKEA customer support or the product-safety channel for the country where the item is being checked. Send clear photos of the whole item and its markings, along with the identifiers you transcribed. For safety issues, IKEA Germany asks for the item name, item number, purchase date if known, date stamp if available, and five-digit manufacturer code (IKEA Germany’s safety-report information).
