Sign in to the automaker’s official connected-services app for your car’s make, model, model year and country, then try to add the vehicle to your own account. If the app says it is already associated with another account, or you cannot access expected remote features, ask the seller or dealer to complete the manufacturer’s official transfer or removal process. Confirm the car appears in your account afterward. A factory reset can clear information stored in the car, but it does not by itself confirm that an online account link has been released.
What “still linked” can mean
A used car may have several separate connections: an online connected-services account, an in-car driver profile, paired phones, or assigned keys and devices. Clearing one does not necessarily clear the others. For example, Ford’s 2024 F-150 owner’s manual describes linking and unlinking a mobile device, while Tesla documents account ownership separately from factory-reset cleanup.

There is no single account-transfer procedure for every automaker. Start with the service named for your vehicle and use its official local app or support page; menus, eligibility and document requirements can vary by model, year and country.

Identify the connected service
Look for the automaker’s connected-services brand and use its official app or support site for your vehicle and market. Do not assume that resetting the infotainment system changes the manufacturer’s online account records.

Try adding the car to your account
Create or sign in to your own account and follow the maker’s official vehicle-add steps. A rejection, an “already associated” notice or missing remote features is a reason to contact the seller, dealer or manufacturer support. It does not, on its own, establish who controls the existing account.

Ask the seller to complete the handoff
While the seller still has access, ask them to transfer ownership or remove the vehicle using the official app or support process. Keep the request specific: you need the online vehicle association released or transferred, not only the previous driver profile deleted. Tesla cautions sellers to remove a vehicle only when they no longer own it or need access to it.

Use the manufacturer’s buyer-claim process if needed
If the seller is unavailable, check whether the automaker lets a buyer claim the vehicle directly. For example, Tesla’s Canadian support instructions let a third-party buyer submit a claim in the Tesla app using the VIN, owner information, identification and proof of ownership. Tesla says processing can take up to 48 hours; that timing and process apply to this Tesla example, not all automakers. Tesla’s vehicle-transfer instructions explain the local steps.

Verify the result in your account
Check that the vehicle is listed under your account and that the connected features you expect are available. Save any confirmation and support case details. Tesla says a completed ownership transfer gives the new owner Tesla app access and removes the vehicle’s information and access from the previous owner’s account.

Clear local data separately
Use the model-specific instructions to remove old driver profiles and paired phones, reset local settings where appropriate, and set up your own keys and devices. Tesla’s Model Y manual recommends a factory reset before account removal; it says the reset clears Bluetooth devices, profiles and navigation history. That local cleanup is not proof that the online account association has been released.

Escalate a blocked transfer
If the app continues to show a previous account or the official claim is blocked, contact the automaker or dealer and provide the ownership documents it requests. Use the support route for your country and vehicle rather than relying on instructions for another market.

What to have ready for support
- The VIN and the vehicle’s make, model, model year and country.
- Your purchase or ownership evidence, such as a title if the manufacturer requests it.
- A description or screenshot of the app message, plus any support case number.
- A clear statement of what remains unavailable: account enrollment, remote access, charging-related services or another connected feature.
Requirements differ by maker and market. For instance, BMW USA identifies a vehicle title showing the requester as owner as relevant to its remote-access disconnection process; use the current local instructions to confirm what your case requires.
How to tell the handoff is complete
- The car appears in your own manufacturer account, rather than only in an in-car profile.
- The app no longer reports an association with another account.
- The connected features included for your vehicle and service plan are available, or the automaker has explained which are not eligible.
- You have separately removed old local profiles and paired devices and configured your own access devices.
Account access, local data and transferable services are different matters. Tesla, for example, says some credits, upgrades and subscriptions might not transfer, and that removing a vehicle ends paid subscriptions. Do not assume an account transfer carries every previous benefit.
