How to Check Whether a UPI Transaction Is Pending, Successful or Reversed

Open the same UPI app you used to pay, go to its History, Activity or Transactions section, and open the specific payment. Read the transaction-level status, amount, timestamp, recipient and reference number. A debit alert by itself does not prove that the recipient was credited.

If the payment is pending, refresh its status, check your bank statement and ask the recipient or merchant to verify receipt before trying again. If your account was debited but the payment did not complete, the applicable Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reversal limit depends on the transaction type: T+1 for the specified failed UPI funds-transfer case and T+5 for a merchant payment where confirmation did not reach the merchant. Delays beyond the applicable limit can attract ₹100 per day compensation.

Start with the transaction record, not the debit notification

UPI apps use different labels, but the checking method is consistent. Use the app that initiated the payment; do not rely only on a lock-screen notification, an SMS, or the fact that your balance fell.

  1. Open the UPI app used for the payment.
  2. Open History, Activity, Transactions or a similarly named area.
  3. Select the exact payment by matching the date, amount and recipient or merchant.
  4. Read the detailed status and save the transaction reference shown there. Depending on the app, it may be called a UTR, RRN, transaction ID or reference number.
  5. Compare the result with your bank-account statement or SMS record. For a person-to-person payment, ask the recipient to check the beneficiary account; for a merchant payment, ask the merchant to check its payment system.

NPCI’s BHIM guidance describes the route as “Go to Home Screen ->Transaction History, to view all your past and pending transactions.” Other apps may place the same information under a profile, bank-account or payment-details menu.

What each UPI status means

Pending

Pending means the app has not yet recorded a final outcome. It is not confirmation that the beneficiary or merchant has received the money, and it is not proof that the payment failed. A network interruption, delayed bank response or reconciliation process can leave a transaction in this state.

Use the app’s refresh or check-status control, if available, and wait for the record to update. Check the bank statement and ask the recipient or merchant to look for the credit. Do not make a second payment merely because a notification has not arrived; first establish what happened to the original transaction.

Successful or completed

A Successful, Completed or equivalent status means the UPI system has recorded a completed payment. NPCI says a completed BHIM transaction should show success and that the customer should receive an SMS from the bank. An SMS can be delayed, however, so a missing message alone does not overturn a successful status. Confirm the final record in the app and, when timing matters, have the recipient or merchant verify the credit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reversed

Reversed means the debit was returned or is being returned because the original payment could not be completed. Look for a corresponding credit or reversal entry in the linked bank account, and match it to the original amount and reference. A status that says reversed in the app is stronger evidence than a generic balance change, but the account statement is the place to verify that the money actually came back.

Failed, declined or cancelled

These labels indicate that the app has recorded a non-successful outcome. They are different from a transaction that remains pending. If your account was debited despite a failed-looking status, treat it as a debited-but-unresolved case: retain the reference, identify whether it was a transfer or merchant payment, and apply the relevant reversal timetable.

How to check a payment that shows pending

  1. Open the detail page. Confirm the amount, date, time, payee or merchant and the current status. A similarly timed payment can otherwise be mistaken for the one you are investigating.
  2. Refresh the status. NPCI’s UPI Help material says the refresh button can return the present status. Use the control on the transaction page rather than starting a new payment.
  3. Check the bank record. Review the linked account’s statement or bank SMS for both the debit and any later credit. The UPI app and the bank ledger can update at different times.
  4. Check with the other side. Ask a person recipient to verify the beneficiary account, or ask a merchant to check its payment confirmation. A screenshot of your debit is not the same as proof of merchant settlement.
  5. Do not duplicate the payment yet. Retrying while the first transaction is unresolved can create two successful debits if the original later completes.

If the status changes to successful, use the final reference and recipient confirmation as the outcome. If it changes to reversed, verify the credit in your bank account. If it remains unresolved beyond the applicable turnaround time, escalate with the reference and evidence.

The two failure cases have different RBI limits

The most important distinction is where the payment was going and what confirmation failed. RBI circular DPSS.CO.PD No. 629/02.01.014/2019-20, dated 20 September 2019, sets maximum turnaround times for specified failed transactions. In the table, T is the transaction date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Transaction type What happened RBI outer reversal limit What you should do
UPI funds transfer Your account was debited, but the beneficiary account was not credited and the beneficiary bank cannot make the credit. T+1 calendar day Check the transaction detail and bank statement, keep the reference, and contact the bank if the debit has not been reversed by the limit.
UPI merchant payment Your account was debited, but confirmation did not reach the merchant. T+5 calendar days Check the app and merchant’s records, avoid paying twice, and escalate to the app or bank if confirmation or reversal is still missing.

These are maximum limits for the specified failure scenarios; banks and other payment participants are expected to resolve failures sooner. Do not apply T+1 to a merchant-confirmation problem or T+5 to a person-to-person funds-transfer problem.

NPCI material also contains an older pending-status answer referring to a 48-hour beneficiary-bank settlement delay. For the formal outer limit, use the RBI framework above and first classify the transaction correctly.

What to do when money was debited but the recipient was not credited

First determine whether you made a funds transfer to a person or account, or a merchant payment for goods or services. Then follow the matching path:

Person-to-person or account transfer

  • Open the transaction and record the status, UTR/RRN or other reference, amount and timestamp.
  • Ask the beneficiary to check the account linked to the receiving UPI ID, not only a notification screen.
  • If the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account, the specified outer reversal limit is T+1.
  • If the debit remains after that limit, contact the payer’s bank and ask it to investigate the missing credit and reversal.

Merchant payment

  • Check whether the merchant’s system shows a completed order, a failed payment or no payment at all.
  • Give the merchant the transaction reference and exact amount, but do not share your UPI PIN or approve a new collect request to “release” a refund.
  • If confirmation did not reach the merchant, the specified outer reversal limit is T+5.
  • If the limit passes without confirmation or reversal, raise the issue through the app and with your bank.

Compensation when the prescribed limit is missed

RBI’s 20 September 2019 framework provides ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable specified turnaround time. Where the framework applies, compensation is to be credited to the customer’s account automatically, without waiting for a complaint or claim. The circular states: “Wherever financial compensation is involved, the same shall be effected to the customer’s account suo moto, without waiting for a complaint or claim.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the date on which the transaction occurred and the date on which the debit was reversed. If the applicable limit is exceeded and no compensation appears, ask the bank to investigate both the reversal and the compensation. The rule concerns the named failed-transaction scenarios; it is not a blanket promise that every UPI dispute receives ₹100 per day.

How to confirm that a transaction was successful

Use three independent checks when the payment is important:

  • The transaction detail in the UPI app says successful or completed.
  • The linked bank account shows the debit with the same amount and reference.
  • The recipient or merchant confirms the credit in its own account or payment system.

A bank SMS is useful but can arrive late. Conversely, a debit entry without a final successful status does not establish that the other account received funds. For a high-value or time-sensitive payment, wait for the recipient’s confirmation before handing over goods, releasing access or sending another payment.

How to tell whether a payment was reversed

Open the original transaction and look for a status such as Reversed, Refunded or Failed – amount returned. Then open the bank statement and find the matching credit. Compare:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the returned amount with the original debit;
  • the credit date and time with the transaction timeline;
  • the original and reversal references, if the bank displays both; and
  • the available balance after the credit posts.

If the app says reversed but the account has no corresponding credit, take a screenshot of the detail page and contact the bank with the reference. If a merchant says it refunded you but the UPI transaction itself remains pending, ask the merchant for its refund or order reference and keep the original UPI reference separate; those records describe different stages of the payment.

Escalate through the app and the bank

  1. Raise an in-app issue. Open the transaction and use its Help, Report a problem or Complaint option. Select the closest reason, such as debited but beneficiary not credited, payment pending or merchant not confirmed.
  2. Contact the payer’s bank. Give the bank the UPI reference, date, amount, payee or merchant details, screenshots and the exact status. The payer’s bank can trace the debit and coordinate with the other participant.
  3. Track the complaint. Save the complaint number, submission date and every reply. If the turnaround limit passes, state that fact clearly and ask about reversal and any applicable compensation.
  4. Use NPCI’s complaint channel when eligible. NPCI says its portal can register and track eligible complaints, but the relevant member bank or institution is responsible for resolving them. Its UPI Help guidance says supported debit complaints can be raised after five minutes; eligibility depends on the transaction and the app flow. Successful person-to-person transactions are excluded from that described UPI Help complaint facility.

Menu names and complaint choices can change with an app version. If the transaction page has no complaint button, use the bank’s official support channel and quote the reference rather than submitting a vague general request.

Unauthorised or fraudulent transactions need immediate action

If you did not authorise the payment, contact your bank immediately and report it as unauthorised. NPCI’s complaint guidance directs such cases to the customer’s bank. Do not wait for a pending label to resolve itself.

  • Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password or full banking credentials to someone offering to reverse a payment.
  • Never approve an unexpected collect request or scan a QR code to receive money; authorising a payment request can debit your account.
  • Preserve the transaction reference, device notification, call or message details and screenshots for the bank’s investigation.

Information to collect before you complain

Having a complete record shortens the explanation and helps the bank trace the payment. Prepare:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the UPI app and bank account used;
  • transaction date and approximate time;
  • amount and currency;
  • recipient name, UPI ID or merchant name;
  • UTR, RRN, transaction ID or other reference;
  • screenshots showing the status and any error;
  • the bank statement or SMS showing the debit and any reversal;
  • the recipient’s or merchant’s response; and
  • the in-app or bank complaint number.

Redact unrelated account information when sharing screenshots. A bank representative does not need your UPI PIN to trace a transaction.

Common situations and the correct next move

What you see Likely interpretation Next move
Pending in the app, no debit in the bank statement The payment may not have reached final debit processing. Refresh the transaction, monitor the account and avoid an immediate duplicate payment.
Pending in the app, debit visible The outcome is unresolved; the debit is not proof of beneficiary credit. Check with the recipient or merchant, classify the transaction, and wait for the applicable reversal or final status.
Successful in the app, recipient says not received The payer-side record is complete, but the beneficiary may be checking the wrong account or a delayed ledger. Share the reference and ask the recipient’s bank to trace the credit; do not pay again without investigating.
Failed or declined, followed by a debit A failed-looking display and a posted debit need reconciliation. Save the reference and apply the funds-transfer or merchant-payment reversal path.
Reversed in the app, no credit in the account The app records a reversal, but the bank ledger has not visibly posted it. Contact the bank with both the original and reversal details.
Merchant says payment failed, but the app is successful The merchant may not have matched the confirmation yet. Give the merchant the reference and ask its payment processor to reconcile before making another payment.

Key points to remember

  • The transaction detail in the UPI app is the first status check; a debit notification is only one piece of evidence.
  • Pending is unresolved, not successful and not automatically failed.
  • Use T+1 for the specified debited UPI funds-transfer failure and T+5 for the specified debited merchant-payment failure without merchant confirmation.
  • The RBI framework specifies ₹100 per day beyond the applicable limit and automatic credit of applicable compensation.
  • For unresolved cases, the bank and payment app are the operational contacts; NPCI can facilitate eligible complaint registration and tracking, while the member institution resolves the transaction.
