Record the displayed status, amount, date, payee and UPI reference number (RRN, where shown). Then check the linked bank account statement for the debit and any later reversal. A debit in your account does not, by itself, prove that a recipient or merchant received the money.
Start with the app history and your bank ledger
UPI apps use different labels and layouts, but the reliable check is the same: compare the app’s transaction record with the bank’s account record. NPCI’s FAQ gives the path as “Go to Home Screen ->Transaction History, to view all your past and pending transactions.” Open the individual payment and note:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- the exact status shown (such as pending, failed, reversed, refunded or successful);
- transaction date and amount;
- payee, beneficiary or merchant name;
- the transaction ID or 12-digit reference/RRN, if displayed; and
- any complaint or support reference already generated.
Check the linked bank account’s recent transactions or statement separately. Look for the original debit and for a later credit or reversal. If the app says a payment failed but the bank still shows a debit, the bank record and the app record together give support staff the information needed to trace it. A push notification alone is not conclusive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

What each UPI status means
| Status or evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debited | The linked bank account ledger shows that the amount was taken. | It does not prove that the beneficiary or merchant received confirmation. | Check the recipient or merchant order status and retain the RRN. |
| Pending | The app has not settled or received a final status. NPCI describes a case in which the payer was debited but the beneficiary was not yet credited while confirmation is delayed at the beneficiary bank. | It is not a refund, and it is not proof that the payment will ultimately succeed or fail. | Refresh and check again; do not pay a second time until the first transaction is resolved. |
| Failed, declined or reversal due | The payment did not complete. NPCI says declined debits are intended to reverse to the payer. | The refund may not yet have appeared in the bank ledger. | Check for the reversal and contact the bank if it has not arrived. NPCI advises contacting the bank when a failed debit is not refunded within one hour. |
| Refunded or reversed | The app reports a return of funds; confirmation is strongest when the bank ledger also shows a matching credit or reversal. | A changed app label by itself does not prove the money is available. | Match the credit to the original amount and reference, then resolve any remaining merchant-order issue. |
| Successful or completed | The UPI system reports completion. | It does not replace checking the recipient’s account or a merchant’s order system when delivery or order fulfilment matters. | Ask the recipient or merchant to search using the transaction reference if they cannot locate it. |
Exact wording varies by app and bank. Treat the displayed status as a starting point and use the bank ledger, recipient confirmation or merchant confirmation to establish what happened.
How to check a payment step by step
- Open the UPI app used for the payment. Do not rely on a different UPI app unless it is linked to the same transaction history.
- Open Transaction History. Find the payment by date, amount or payee. NPCI says this view contains past and pending transactions.
- Open the payment details. Record the status, date, amount, payee or merchant and the UPI transaction number/RRN. Take a screenshot if your app permits it, but do not share your UPI PIN, OTP or full account credentials.
- Refresh the status. Use the app’s refresh or check-status control, if present. A pending display can be stale while the bank is completing settlement.
- Open the linked bank account statement. Confirm whether the amount was debited and whether a later credit or reversal appears. Note the bank’s transaction narration and date.
- Check the other side of the payment. For a person-to-person transfer, ask the beneficiary to check the account rather than relying on a screenshot. For a merchant payment, check the merchant’s order page, receipt or support record.
- Decide whether to wait or raise a trace. Use the payment type and the applicable time limits below. Avoid sending the same amount again while the first payment is unresolved.
Why a debit does not always mean the payment was received
UPI involves the payer’s bank, the beneficiary’s bank and, for a purchase, the merchant’s system. The payer’s bank can post a debit before the beneficiary bank has credited the recipient or before the merchant receives a confirmation message. That is why “money debited” and “payment received” are separate checks.
Transfer to another person’s account
Ask the beneficiary to check the bank account connected to the UPI address, not merely a notification banner. If the beneficiary has no credit and your app remains pending, keep the transaction reference and wait for the status to update or ask the bank/app support team to trace it. Do not initiate a duplicate transfer just because the first attempt looks delayed.
Payment to a merchant
A debit can coexist with an order page that says unpaid when the confirmation did not reach the merchant. Check the merchant’s order record and provide the RRN rather than paying again. The regulatory reversal period for this case is different from the period for a transfer to another bank account.
Official time limits: NPCI operating guidance versus RBI reversal rules
Two sets of guidance are relevant and they answer different questions. NPCI’s customer FAQ gives practical expectations for checking a live transaction. The Reserve Bank of India’s 20 September 2019 circular (effective 15 October 2019) sets an outer limit for automatic reversal in specified failed-transaction cases. The RBI framework applies to domestic transactions in which both originator and beneficiary are in India. “T” means the calendar date of the transaction; it should not be silently changed to a business-day calculation.

| Payer debited; beneficiary account not credited in a funds transfer | For a pending transfer, NPCI says the amount will reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes its daily settlement. This is operational guidance, not a guarantee that every pending display will resolve in 48 hours. | If the beneficiary bank cannot credit the account, automatic reversal is due by T+1 day. | ₹100 per day beyond the applicable limit, as specified by the circular. |
| Payer debited; merchant did not receive transaction confirmation | NPCI’s FAQ advises checking the app and bank and contacting support when the debit is not resolved. | Automatic reversal is due within T+5 days. | ₹100 per day beyond the applicable limit, as specified by the circular. |
| Failed or declined debit | NPCI says UPI provides real-time reversals for declines and advises contacting the bank if the amount does not reverse immediately; its FAQ specifically recommends support contact when a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. | The applicable RBI category depends on whether this is a funds-transfer failure or a merchant-confirmation failure; do not apply T+1 or T+5 without identifying the payment type. | Use the category and conditions in the RBI circular, not a generic refund promise. |
The RBI wording for the funds-transfer case is: “If unable to credit the beneficiary account, auto reversal (R) by the Beneficiary bank latest on T + 1 day.” For the merchant case it states: “Auto-reversal within T + 5 days.” Read the full RBI circular and annex for the conditions and scope. These are reversal limits, not a prediction of the current status of one payment. NPCI’s one-hour and 48-hour statements are separate customer-service guidance.
Separate transaction status from complaint status
A transaction status tells you what the payment system currently reports. A complaint status tells you how a support case is progressing. They are related but not interchangeable. A payment can remain pending while a complaint is open, or the app can show a changed transaction label while a bank investigation is still underway.
When you contact support, quote the original transaction date, amount and RRN, then record the new app ticket, bank complaint number or NPCI complaint reference (CRN). Use the complaint-status option in transaction history when available. Do not close a case merely because a notification changed; confirm the corresponding bank credit or recipient or merchant outcome.
A quick decision checklist
- App pending and no debit: keep checking the app and bank ledger; the payment may not have posted.
- App pending and debit present: check the recipient or merchant, refresh, avoid a duplicate payment and prepare a trace.
- App failed and debit present: look for a reversal and contact the bank if it has not arrived within NPCI’s one-hour support guidance.
- App refunded or reversed and credit present: the funds have returned; resolve any separate order or delivery problem with the merchant.
- App successful but recipient or merchant cannot locate it: provide the RRN and ask the sending bank or app support to trace the confirmation.
- Payment was not authorised: contact the bank immediately as fraud or an unauthorised transaction; do not wait for the status to settle.
What to do when the money is still missing
- Recheck the app transaction. Open history, refresh the payment and use any “check complaint status” option. Confirm that you are looking at the correct date and amount.
- Recheck the bank ledger. Look for the original debit and for a separate reversal or credit. A reversal may have a different narration or posting time.
- Contact the UPI app support or the account-holding bank. Provide the transaction date, amount, displayed status, payee or merchant and the RRN/transaction number. NPCI says customers can raise a grievance or check UPI transaction status through participating banks’ UPI apps.
- Keep every reference number. Save the bank complaint number, app ticket and any NPCI complaint reference (CRN). Never disclose a UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN or complete login credentials to support staff contacted through an unverified message or phone call.
- Use NPCI’s complaint portal when the member bank or institution needs a formal complaint. Select the relevant product and transaction type, enter the required details and retain the CRN. The portal requires a 12-digit transaction number/RRN, so copy the reference exactly as shown by the app or bank. NPCI states that the member bank or institution is responsible for resolution and that final complaint or transaction status can be checked with the transaction details or CRN. Use NPCI’s complaint portal.
- Escalate an unresolved eligible failure. If the required reversal has not occurred within the applicable RBI time limit, use the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme route after first complaining to the regulated entity, as applicable to your case.
Special handling for fraud or an unauthorised payment
If you did not authorise the payment, treat it as a security incident rather than an ordinary pending transaction. Contact the bank immediately through its official channel and report the transaction as fraud or unauthorised. NPCI’s complaint portal directs fraud, unidentified and unauthorised complaints to the respective bank. Do not wait for a pending label to change, and do not share an OTP or UPI PIN with anyone claiming to arrange a refund.

Common situations and the safest response
The app says pending and the account is debited
Refresh the transaction, check the beneficiary or merchant side, and wait for the relevant settlement or reversal process. Keep the RRN. Do not make a second payment until you know whether the first one succeeded.
The app says failed but the debit remains
Look for a reversal in the bank statement. NPCI advises contacting the bank if the amount has not returned within one hour. Tell support that the app says failed, the account remains debited and provide the exact time, amount and RRN.

Check the bank ledger for a separate credit, including later postings on the same day or the next posting cycle. If no matching credit appears, ask the bank or app support to trace the reversal using the original RRN; do not assume the changed label means the funds are usable.
The merchant says unpaid while the bank shows a debit
Give the merchant the transaction reference and ask it to reconcile the order. Also open a bank or app support case. This is the merchant-confirmation category, for which the RBI circular specifies T+5 automatic reversal when its conditions apply.

The recipient says the money was not received
Have the recipient check the actual beneficiary account and statement. Share the RRN through a trusted channel, then ask the sending bank or UPI app to trace the transfer. Do not send another payment merely to make the recipient’s notification appear.
Information to prepare before contacting support
- UPI app name and the linked bank name;
- transaction date and approximate time;
- amount and currency;
- payee, beneficiary or merchant identifier;
- displayed status and any error message;
- 12-digit RRN or transaction ID, where available;
- bank statement entry showing the debit or reversal; and
- app ticket, bank complaint number or NPCI CRN.
Share only the information needed to trace the transaction. A legitimate support process does not require your UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN or complete banking password.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a debit mean the UPI payment succeeded?
No. A debit proves that the linked account was charged, but the beneficiary may not yet have been credited and a merchant may not have received confirmation. Check the recipient’s account or merchant order record and use the RRN to trace the payment.
How long can a pending UPI transfer take?
NPCI says a pending transfer may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes its daily settlement. This is operational guidance. If a funds transfer cannot be credited, the RBI framework requires automatic reversal by T+1 day, subject to the circular’s conditions.
Best Value
Should I make the payment again if the first one is pending?
No. First refresh the transaction, check the bank ledger and ask the recipient or merchant to verify receipt. Paying again can create a duplicate debit.
What is the difference between a refund and a reversal?
Both indicate that money is being returned, but app labels vary. Confirm the status change with a matching credit or reversal entry in the bank ledger; the label alone is not enough.
What should I do if a failed UPI debit has not returned?
Check the bank statement for a reversal and contact the bank or app support with the date, amount, status and RRN. NPCI advises contacting the bank when a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour.
What is the RBI deadline for a debited merchant payment?
When the payer is debited but transaction confirmation does not reach the merchant location, the RBI’s 20 September 2019 circular specifies automatic reversal within T+5 days. Delay beyond the applicable limit attracts ₹100 per day under the framework.
What information does NPCI’s complaint portal require?
The portal asks for the relevant product and transaction type and requires a 12-digit transaction number or RRN for the form. Keep the complaint reference number (CRN), which can be used with the member bank or institution to check the final status.
What if I did not authorise the UPI payment?
Contact your bank immediately through an official channel and report it as fraud, unidentified or unauthorised. Do not wait for a pending status to change and never share your UPI PIN or OTP with someone promising a refund.

Use both records: the UPI app shows the reported transaction state, while the bank ledger shows whether money actually left or returned.
