To know what will happen, check the exact game, edition, platform, and Ubisoft support notice, then verify whether the game still needs Ubisoft Connect, an account check, or a permanent internet connection to launch.
There is no reliable answer for an unnamed “Ubisoft game.” A PC release can have different requirements from a console release, and one edition may retain content that another loses. Use the procedure below to reach a title-specific conclusion instead of treating “servers shut down” as an all-or-nothing statement.

What a Ubisoft server shutdown can change
Ubisoft uses “decommissioning” notices for older online services. The notice normally identifies particular games, platforms, and dates. It may retire only network functions rather than the entire game.

Its wording is important: “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you.” That statement applies to the listed legacy titles and is not a blanket guarantee for every Ubisoft release.

A shutdown can remove or disable several separate systems:
- Online multiplayer, matchmaking, co-op, leaderboards, or other network modes.
- In-game news feeds and server-delivered announcements.
- Player statistics, rankings, and tracking pages.
- Units and Challenges, including the ability to earn or redeem related rewards.
- Unlockable items or downloadable entitlements whose delivery or validation depended on the retired service.
- Access to rewards that were never redeemed, depending on the game, platform, and save-file history.
The campaign, local modes, or other offline functions may continue to work while those services disappear. Conversely, a game can be listed as having an offline mode and still require a launcher, account authentication, or an internet connection during installation or startup. Check those requirements separately.
Step 1: Identify the exact release you own
Write down the details before opening a support page. “The game” is often too broad for Ubisoft’s notices, which can list different dates or effects by platform.
- Full title: include subtitles, expansions, remasters, and similarly named entries.
- Edition: standard, deluxe, gold, complete, collector’s, or a bundle can include different entitlements.
- Platform: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo hardware, or another supported system. On PC, note whether the copy is tied to Ubisoft Connect or another store.
- Ownership route: a physical disc, digital purchase, subscription entitlement, or redeemed code can affect how content is validated.
- Save location: local saves and cloud saves may behave differently when a service disappears.
Keep a screenshot of the game’s store or library entry and any installed add-ons. This gives you a record of what was purchased before a service change, particularly if a reward or downloadable item later becomes unavailable.
Step 2: Find the game in Ubisoft’s decommissioning lists
Ubisoft Help maintains two legacy shutdown pages, organized alphabetically as A–M and N–Z. Search the title on both pages if necessary, then read the complete entry rather than stopping at the date.
- Open Ubisoft Help and locate the legacy online-service decommissioning article.
- Choose the A–M or N–Z list that contains the game’s name.
- Search for the exact title, including punctuation and subtitles.
- Confirm that the platform in the entry matches the copy you own.
- Record the stated retirement date and every affected service.
- Open any linked, title-specific support article for launch, offline, account, or downloadable-content requirements.
A title’s absence from a list does not prove that it will remain fully online forever. It means only that the particular legacy notice you checked does not identify it. Ubisoft’s support pages are live documents and can change, so check the current entry close to the date you plan to play.
Step 3: Read the effects, not just the word “shutdown”
Two entries that both say “online services will be decommissioned” can have very different practical consequences. Make a feature inventory for the title.

Online play
Look for multiplayer, matchmaking, co-op, invasions, leaderboards, tournaments, or any mode that connects players to Ubisoft-operated servers. If the notice names these functions, assume they will not work after the stated date unless Ubisoft provides a replacement service.
News and statistics
In-game news panels and player-statistics pages commonly depend on the same backend systems. Their removal does not necessarily affect a local campaign, but it can remove history, rankings, or notifications that were visible while the service operated.
Units, Challenges, and rewards
Ubisoft’s legacy guidance identifies Units and Challenges as affected systems. If a game awards currency, cosmetics, or other items for server-tracked challenges, you may no longer be able to earn, claim, or redeem them after retirement. Spend or redeem any available rewards before the date if the support notice instructs you to do so.
Unlockable and downloadable content
The N–Z guidance describes platform-specific differences for previously redeemed unlockable content. That means two people with the same title can see different results based on platform, account history, or whether an item was claimed before the service ended. Separate these questions:

- Is it installed locally, or does the game fetch it from a service at launch?
- Does the notice say that previously redeemed content remains available?
- Is the content a normal downloadable expansion, a reward, or an online-only entitlement?
Do not infer that every purchased add-on survives simply because the main campaign does. Ubisoft’s terms explain that account, internet, or Ubisoft Connect requirements can apply to installation, launching, access, and unlocking.
Step 4: Check whether the game can launch offline
“Offline play” and “offline launch” are different tests. A game may contain a playable local campaign but still require an initial account check or a launcher session.
Check the game’s support instructions
Search Ubisoft Help for the title plus terms such as offline mode, connection requirements, launch, or Ubisoft Connect. Follow the title-specific instructions over a general assumption about older games.

Understand Ubisoft Connect on PC
Ubisoft’s terms state that an internet connection, a Ubisoft account, or the Ubisoft Connect client may be required to install, launch, access, or unlock some games or content. Some games or features may require a permanent connection. Therefore, a server retirement notice does not by itself answer whether a PC copy will open after the shutdown.
For a PC game, check all of the following:
- Whether Ubisoft Connect has an offline mode for the title.
- Whether the game must be launched once online before offline mode is available.
- Whether the account that owns the game is signed in and the license is recognized.
- Whether an expansion or reward performs a separate online entitlement check.
- Whether the game’s support page explicitly requires a persistent connection.
Use Anno 1800 as the model for a title-specific answer
Ubisoft gives Anno 1800 as a specific offline example: when Ubisoft Connect PC is placed in offline mode, the game starts in offline mode, but online features are unavailable. This demonstrates why the exact launch path matters. It supports an offline-start conclusion for that title under that setup; it does not establish the same behavior for every Ubisoft game.
Step 5: Compare platforms and editions before you decide
If you can choose between versions, compare the entries rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

For example, a console disc with a local campaign may remain usable while a PC edition still needs periodic account validation. Treat each row as an independent question.
Step 6: Test your copy before the retirement date
If the game is already installed, perform a controlled test while the listed services still operate. This cannot guarantee future behavior, but it exposes avoidable account and installation problems.

- Launch the game normally and confirm that the owning account is recognized.
- Open the campaign or local mode you expect to use.
- In the game’s menus, note which features are labeled online-only.
- On PC, close the game, switch Ubisoft Connect to offline mode, and start the title again if Ubisoft’s instructions support that workflow.
- Verify that your saves load and that purchased expansions appear.
- Record any error message, required sign-in, or missing entitlement and resolve it while support systems are still available.
Do not delete a working installation solely to “test” a future shutdown. Reinstallation may trigger an account or entitlement check that was not needed for an already-authorized local copy.

After completing the checks, classify the outcome precisely.

Likely offline play remains
You have a strong basis for continued local play when Ubisoft lists the title as a legacy shutdown, states that offline features remain, and the title-specific instructions show that your platform and edition launch without a permanent connection. State the limits: named online functions, rewards, statistics, or unlockables will no longer be available.
Playable, but launcher or account access remains necessary
This is common for PC titles. The campaign may run offline after Ubisoft Connect has authenticated the account, while a fresh installation, a new machine, or an unredeemed add-on still requires internet access. Keep the account credentials and installation files available.

Some content is uncertain
If the notice discusses platform-specific unlockables, redeemed rewards, or an entitlement service without promising continued access, describe that content as uncertain rather than guaranteed. The safe conclusion may be “the core local game is expected to remain playable; this reward or add-on is not established.”
Permanent connection or service dependency
If Ubisoft’s terms or the game’s support article requires a permanent connection, a shutdown can prevent launch even when the game has a nominal single-player mode. That requirement outweighs a general statement that offline features usually remain available.

Dates in a notice apply only to the games, platforms, and services named there.
- January 25, 2024: Ubisoft’s January 2024 notice scheduled additional service retirements for the listed titles and platforms. It said the cited decommissioning would affect certain online functions while purchased games remained playable.
- October 1, 2022: Ubisoft’s October 2022 update discussed a revised decommission date for the entries covered by that update.
These are schedule dates, not statistics about how many Ubisoft games remain playable. Do not use either date as a general cutoff for every title.
What to do if the game stops launching afterward
Work through the branch that matches the failure instead of assuming the entire game has been disabled.
The game asks for a sign-in
Confirm that the account owning the game is the one currently signed in. If the title supports Ubisoft Connect offline mode, authenticate while online, enable offline mode, and retry. If the support article requires a permanent connection, offline troubleshooting cannot remove that requirement.
The campaign opens but an item is missing
Check whether the item was a server-delivered reward, Units or Challenge unlock, or an entitlement that had not been redeemed. A missing reward does not prove that the purchased base game is unusable.
Multiplayer or statistics no longer load
That is an expected effect when those services are named in the retirement notice. Confirm that the local modes still launch, then preserve local saves and any screenshots or records you want to keep.

Check the edition and account entitlement, then read the title-specific support guidance. Reinstallation can require a fresh license or content check; platform-specific rules may apply to previously redeemed unlockables.
The title is not listed
Search both alphabetical pages and the game’s own support section, including the exact platform and edition. If no current notice addresses the title, report the result as “no listed retirement entry found,” not as proof of permanent support.
A practical decision checklist
Before telling someone that a Ubisoft game will work after shutdown, make sure every answer below is documented:
- What is the exact title, edition, platform, and ownership route?
- Which Ubisoft legacy-list entry matches that platform?
- What retirement date is stated?
- Which online modes, news, statistics, Units, Challenges, rewards, or unlockables are named as affected?
- Does the title-specific guidance confirm an offline campaign or local mode?
- Does launch require Ubisoft Connect, an account, an initial online check, or a permanent connection?
- Were the relevant DLC and rewards already redeemed?
- Does the conclusion distinguish the playable core from lost or uncertain features?
A defensible final answer should look like this: “On [platform], Ubisoft lists [title] for retirement on [date]. The notice removes [named services]. The support instructions indicate that [offline mode] remains available, but launch still requires [account, launcher, or connection condition]. The status of [specific reward or add-on] depends on [platform or redemption history].” Replace each bracketed item with the verified title-specific facts; do not generalize from another game.

The bottom line for buyers and existing owners
A Ubisoft server shutdown is usually a feature-by-feature change, not an automatic erasure of the game. Ubisoft says offline features remain available for most games in its legacy lists, while online play and related services can be retired. The decisive checks are the exact platform and edition, the affected-service list, and the game’s launch requirements. Confirm those three areas in Ubisoft Help before buying, reinstalling, or promising that a particular title will work offline.
