How to Check Whether a Stock Quote Is Delayed or Live

Start with the quote’s data-status label. Look for wording such as “Data Delayed 15 minutes,” “Data Delayed 24 hours,” “Delayed Data,” or an explicit real-time designation. Then read the timestamp, confirm whether the market is in regular or extended hours, and check the data entitlement for that specific exchange or quote product. A timestamp that looks current is useful evidence, but it does not prove that the feed is real-time.

If the interface is unclear, compare the same symbol and quote fields with a second source that clearly identifies its data status, during the same trading session. Treat that comparison as a cross-check rather than absolute proof, especially outside regular hours. A live display also does not guarantee that an order will fill at the displayed price.

The fastest way to tell if a quote is delayed

Use this sequence whenever you open a stock quote in a brokerage app, website or charting screen:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the data-status notice. Inspect the quote panel, ticker header, chart, order ticket and any “market data” or information icon. Providers do not place the notice in a universal location. Look for “real-time,” “real time,” “live,” “delayed,” “15-minute delay,” “24-hour delay” or similar wording.
  2. Read the timestamp and its time zone. Note whether it is the time of the last trade, the bid and ask update, the close, or the time the provider refreshed the screen. Check whether the timestamp is in Eastern Time or another zone.
  3. Identify the trading session. For U.S. exchange-traded stocks, regular trading hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-market and after-hours periods vary by venue and provider.
  4. Check the entitlement for that product. A brokerage account can have different treatments for U.S. equities, options, futures, international shares or a particular exchange. Find the provider’s market-data settings, subscriptions or disclosure for the exact product you are viewing.
  5. Cross-check if anything is ambiguous. During the same session, open a second source that explicitly says whether its quote is real-time or delayed. Compare the timestamp and the same fields—bid, ask, last trade and volume—not just the large number on the screen.

This process follows the distinction made in exchange and regulator guidance: data status, delay interval, product entitlement and session all matter together. No single timestamp can answer the question in every case.

What the labels mean

Exchange display policies require prominent wording when information is delayed. Nasdaq’s display-policy examples include “Data Delayed 15 minutes,” “Data Delayed 24 hours” and “Delayed Data.” NYSE guidance likewise calls for an appropriate, prominent and clear delay disclaimer on displays of delayed information. These are examples of policy-compliant messages, not a promise that every provider uses the same words or that every security has the same interval.

Label or wording What it tells you What it does not tell you
Real-time, real time or live The provider is representing that the product is intended to update without the stated delay during the covered session. It does not guarantee that every exchange, security, field or extended-hours venue is covered, or that an order will execute at the displayed price.
Data Delayed 15 minutes The display is identified as delayed by a 15-minute interval under that product’s treatment. It does not establish that all other fields, venues or sessions use exactly the same interval.
Data Delayed 24 hours The display is identified as delayed by a 24-hour interval. It does not describe the status of another quote screen or another exchange entitlement in the same account.
Delayed Data The provider is disclosing that the information is not presented as current real-time data. It does not, by itself, state the precise number of minutes or hours.
No status shown Nothing about the absence of a label proves that the feed is live. You still need the provider’s disclosure, entitlement information or a clearly identified comparison source.

Nasdaq’s policy recognizes multiple treatments, including 15-minute and 24-hour intervals and other product-specific arrangements. NYSE policy material describes a 15-minute interval and a midnight Eastern Standard Time interval in its delayed-data context. Those policy intervals should not be generalized into a universal delay for every free quote page or brokerage account.

How to interpret the timestamp

A timestamp is valuable, but only when you know what event it timestamps. A quote screen might show the time of the last trade, the most recent bid or ask update, the time a delayed record was disseminated, or the time the page was refreshed. Ask three questions before using it as evidence of freshness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which field received the timestamp?

“Last” may refer to the most recent reported trade. “Bid” and “ask” are currently displayed buying and selling interest for the product as represented by that feed. “Volume” can update on a different cadence. A chart’s candle time may describe the interval represented by the bar rather than the instant your screen received the data.

What clock and date are being used?

Check the time zone, date and whether the display uses 12-hour or 24-hour notation. A quote that appears current in your local time may actually show an earlier Eastern Time print, or a prior session’s close. Some interfaces display only a time and omit the date when the market is closed, making an old value look newer than it is.

Is the timestamp for delayed information?

Even a timestamp only seconds old can belong to a delayed feed. In that case, it may indicate when the provider disseminated the delayed record, not when the trade occurred at the exchange. Nasdaq and SEC guidance both support reading the timestamp together with the product’s stated data treatment.

Is the market open?

During regular U.S. hours, a timestamp that advances with trades and quotes is easier to interpret. Before the open, after the close or on a holiday, a stable timestamp may simply reflect the latest available print. Do not infer a malfunction from an unchanged value until you have checked the session calendar and the instrument’s trading venue.

Check the entitlement for the exact quote product

Real-time and delayed data are separate treatments. Your account may receive one without the other, and the treatment can vary by exchange, security type or screen. Look for a market-data, exchange-data, quote-permissions or subscription area in the provider’s account settings. Read the disclosure attached to the specific product rather than relying on a general statement that the app offers “real-time” prices.

Important distinctions to verify include:

  • Coverage: U.S. listed shares, over-the-counter securities, foreign listings, options and other instruments can have different entitlements.
  • Venue: A quote may represent one exchange, a group of venues or an aggregated feed. Confirm what the provider says is included.
  • Screen: A quote page, chart, watchlist, mobile widget and order ticket may not use identical data products.
  • Account status: A trial, cash account, professional classification or newly changed permission can affect access.
  • Session: Regular-hours data and extended-hours data may be treated differently, even for the same symbol.

The exchange policies cited here establish the need for clear treatment and delay disclosures, but they do not provide current click-by-click instructions for every broker. Use the provider’s own current settings and disclosure for the final entitlement check.

How to cross-check an unclear quote

A second source is useful when the first screen has no clear label or when its timestamp conflicts with what you expect. Perform the comparison in a way that controls for the variables that commonly cause differences.

  1. Choose the identical security. Match the ticker, share class and listing venue. Similar symbols can represent different securities.
  2. Open both sources during the same session. Record whether the market is in regular hours, pre-market, after-hours or closed.
  3. Confirm each source’s status. Prefer a source that explicitly identifies its feed as real-time or delayed and states the interval when delayed.
  4. Compare like fields. Put bid against bid, ask against ask, last trade against last trade and volume against volume. Do not compare one source’s closing price with another source’s last extended-hours trade.
  5. Record timestamps and time zones. A one-hour or one-day difference can be a clock or session issue rather than a feed problem.
  6. Investigate persistent gaps. If the values remain different while both sources claim comparable status, check venue coverage, entitlement details and whether one source is showing consolidated or venue-specific data.

Investor.gov describes a quote in terms of bid and offer prices, while the consolidated tape reports latest price and volume information from market centers. Those are related but not interchangeable displays. Agreement between two screens increases confidence that you understand the data; it is not an absolute guarantee of real-time delivery.

Regular hours, pre-market and after-hours

For U.S. exchange-traded stocks, the SEC describes regular trading hours as 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Extended sessions vary by market and venue. A provider may show pre-market or after-hours indications even when its regular-session product has a different entitlement.

During regular hours

Use the status label and timestamp first. If the source says delayed, treat every apparently current update as delayed by the stated product interval. If it says real-time, still confirm which venue and fields are covered. A “live” last trade does not imply that every bid or ask displayed on the same screen is from the same instant.

Before the open or after the close

The SEC notes that extended-hours venues are not linked to one another in the same way as the regular market and that consolidated quote and trade data may not be readily available as it is during regular hours. Two displays can therefore show different prices without one simply being stale. One may reflect a transaction on a venue the other does not cover, or one may be showing a different type of indication.

When the market is closed

A quote labeled “close” may be the official regular-session close, the latest trade, or another provider-defined closing convention. Check the field name and date. Do not use a closing value as evidence that an intraday feed is live.

Do not confuse bid, ask, last and close

Field Meaning for freshness checks Common mistake
Bid The price at which displayed buying interest is represented for the covered feed and venue. Assuming it is the price your sell order will receive.
Ask or offer The price at which displayed selling interest is represented for the covered feed and venue. Assuming it is guaranteed to remain available when you submit an order.
Last trade The latest trade reported to that data product. Treating it as the current bid, ask or guaranteed execution price.
Close A provider- or market-defined closing value for a session. Comparing it with an after-hours trade as if both represented the same event.
Volume Reported trading activity accumulated according to the feed’s coverage and timing. Expecting it to match when one source is venue-specific and another is consolidated.

Because these fields describe different events, a screen can be working normally even when its last trade, bid, ask and close are not equal. The SEC’s Investor.gov material on quotes and consolidated tape data is a useful reference for these distinctions.

Why two apps can show different stock prices

A difference does not automatically prove that one app is delayed. Check the following causes in order:

  • Different delay intervals: One source may use a 15-minute delay while another is real-time or delayed by a different interval.
  • Different fields: One screen may show the last trade and the other the current ask.
  • Different venues: One source may display a venue-specific quote while another aggregates market centers.
  • Different sessions: One may include an extended-hours print while the other shows the regular-session close.
  • Different security identifiers: A class A share, depositary receipt or similarly named listing can have a different ticker or venue.
  • Refresh behavior: A page can have a live entitlement but update its visible panel only when you refresh, change tabs or reopen the quote.
  • Stale cached content: A watchlist tile or search result may show an earlier value than the dedicated quote page.

Use the status label, field name, timestamp, session and venue together. Comparing only the headline price is not enough to diagnose a delay.

A live quote is not a guaranteed execution price

“Live” describes the timing treatment of the displayed market data. It does not promise that the same price will still be available when an order reaches the market. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on order types states that “the last-traded price is not necessarily the price at which a market order will be executed.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prices can move between display and submission, and available liquidity can change while an order is being routed. A market order can execute at a price that differs from the last trade or the real-time quote shown when you tapped the order button. A real-time quote is therefore useful for decision-making, not a price lock.

Troubleshooting common situations

The app shows a current-looking time but no status label

Do not assume real-time delivery. Open the provider’s market-data disclosure or entitlement page, then compare the quote with a clearly labeled second source during regular hours. If the provider cannot state the treatment for that exact product, treat the status as unconfirmed.

The price is unchanged for several minutes

Check whether the symbol has traded, whether the market is open, whether the field is a bid or ask rather than a last trade, and whether the screen is delayed. A lack of movement alone does not identify the cause.

The two sources match during the day but differ after 4 p.m. Eastern

Check extended-hours coverage and venue linkage. The SEC warns that extended venues are not linked in the same way as the regular market, so different displays may legitimately show different trades or quotes.

The displayed close differs from yesterday’s last price

Verify the date, whether one value includes an after-hours trade, and the provider’s definition of “close.” Closing conventions are not interchangeable with the latest intraday trade.

The order preview shows a different price from the quote page

Compare the timestamp and field on each screen. The preview may be using a bid or ask, while the quote page highlights the last trade. Neither is a guaranteed fill price for a market order.

A practical decision checklist

Before relying on a quote for an intraday decision, confirm each item:

  • The screen states whether data is real-time or delayed.
  • If delayed, the interval is identified or documented by the provider.
  • The timestamp includes an understandable date and time zone.
  • You know whether the value is bid, ask, last trade, close or volume.
  • The market session is identified as regular, pre-market, after-hours or closed.
  • The exchange, venue or consolidated coverage is clear enough for your use.
  • Your account has the relevant entitlement for this security and screen.
  • A second, explicitly labeled source gives a broadly consistent result when a cross-check is needed.
  • You understand that a displayed quote cannot guarantee an execution price.

When paying for real-time data may be justified

A reader who needs current intraday U.S. equity information can evaluate a brokerage or market-data provider that offers a real-time entitlement for the relevant exchanges. The decision depends on the securities and sessions you actually trade, not on a generic “live quotes” label. Confirm coverage, account classification, exchange fees, extended-hours treatment and whether the entitlement applies to mobile, web and order-entry screens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you invest mainly after the market closes or make decisions from end-of-day prices, a delayed or closing-data product may be sufficient. If you trade during regular hours, an explicitly real-time product can reduce uncertainty about the age of displayed quotes, but it still cannot eliminate price movement, venue differences or execution risk.

Scope and limits of this check

This guidance is centered on U.S. equities and official SEC, Nasdaq and NYSE material. Other countries, asset classes and trading venues can use different hours, labels, market-data rules and consolidation arrangements. “Live” is everyday language; providers and exchanges may instead describe a product as real-time or delayed with a defined interval.

The most defensible answer is therefore specific: identify the status label, timestamp, field, venue, entitlement and session for the quote in front of you. If any one of those is unknown, the display may be useful, but its freshness is not fully established.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
