Start with the latest statement or account view for every workplace retirement plan and IRA you own. Record each account’s current value, identify how much is invested in stocks, bonds, cash, and other assets, then compare the combined portfolio with the allocation you intended. A market headline or index decline cannot tell you how much your own investments changed—or whether you should sell.
What your account values can—and cannot—tell you
Your retirement account value is a snapshot: it shows what the account is worth at the time reported. It does not, by itself, tell you how much of a change came from market movement, contributions, withdrawals, fees, or transactions. Nor does a decline in a broad stock index establish that every investment in your account fell by the same amount. Your result depends on what you own and the dates you compare.

To assess the effect of a sell-off, work from your own holdings outward: first check every account, then determine the portfolio’s stock exposure and how it fits your plan. An index’s performance can provide market context, but it is not a substitute for this account-level review. Even accounts invested in funds with familiar names can have different exposures, and a headline cannot show which of your investments moved or by how much.
Step 1: Gather information from every retirement account
Sign in to each workplace plan and IRA, or use the latest available statement. Include accounts that may be easy to overlook, such as a former employer’s plan. A 401(k) individual benefit statement shows each investment’s value and information about your ability to direct investments, according to the IRS. Other statements and provider portals may present the information differently, so look for both the total account value and the value or percentage assigned to each holding.

For each account, note the statement or display date. If the account view shows pending transactions or a value from an earlier market close, record that context rather than treating it as a real-time figure. Do not assume two accounts are directly comparable if their values are from different dates. A statement is a starting point, not a live quote or a complete explanation of what changed.
- Account type and provider.
- Value and date shown.
- Each investment’s name and value or percentage.
- Recent contributions, withdrawals, transfers, fees, or trades that could affect the comparison.
- Any plan information about how you can direct investments.
Use records already available through your plan or investment provider. If a holding’s name or category is unclear, check its fund documents or ask the provider what the investment is; do not classify it as a stock fund merely because its name sounds familiar. If the provider offers both a current account view and a formal statement, note which one you used and the date shown so you can make a meaningful comparison later.
Include each account you want to assess before drawing conclusions. Looking only at the account that fell most visibly can exaggerate or understate the effect on your retirement savings as a whole. Conversely, a bond-heavy account may appear steady while a separate plan holds substantial stock exposure. The aim is not to force every account into one number, but to avoid mistaking one account for your entire portfolio.

Sort holdings into broad categories: stock investments, bond investments, cash or cash-like investments, and other investments. The labels and categories offered by providers may differ, so consult the investment’s description or fund documents when necessary. The goal is to understand how your retirement savings are exposed overall—not to judge one account in isolation.
Add together the stock investments across your retirement accounts. Then consider relevant investments outside those accounts and other sources of retirement income as part of the wider picture. The SEC advises investors to consider overall allocation, including other investments and sources of retirement income. A large stock allocation in one plan can be obscured if you look only at a separate account that holds mostly bonds or cash.
If you want to express the mix as percentages, divide the value in each category by the total value of the accounts you are including, using values from a consistent date where possible. Keep the scope clear: a percentage for one account is not the same as a percentage for your combined retirement portfolio. If you exclude an account or an outside investment, note that rather than silently treating the result as your full financial picture.
Check whether a fund is itself a mix of underlying investments before adding its full value to a single category. The provider’s description and fund documents can help you understand what it holds. If you cannot tell whether an investment belongs in stocks, bonds, cash, or another category, mark it as unclear and investigate rather than assigning it based on a guess. A rough, transparent inventory is more useful than a precise-looking percentage built on mistaken classifications.

Why the stock share can change without a trade
Market movements can change allocation percentages even when you make no transactions. If stocks fall relative to bonds or cash, the stock portion may become a smaller share of the portfolio; if stocks rise relative to other holdings, it may become a larger share. The direction and size of the change depend on the investments and time period involved. A decline in a stock index alone does not tell you the new mix in your accounts.
That is why it helps to record both dollar values and percentages. A holding can lose value while still making up a larger or smaller portion of the account depending on what happened to the other holdings. Comparing only one fund’s current value with a previous value does not reveal whether your overall allocation remains close to your intended mix.
Step 3: Look through funds for overlap and concentration
A fund’s name is not a complete inventory of what you own. Review its top holdings and, where available, its sector or asset breakdown. Then compare those holdings with the other funds in your accounts. Several funds can own many of the same companies or focus on the same sectors, so owning multiple funds does not automatically mean you are broadly diversified.
For a practical overlap check, list the largest holdings or sector exposures shown in each fund’s materials. Look for the same companies or sectors appearing repeatedly, especially across funds that might seem different from their names alone. This is a way to spot possible concentration, not a precise measure of your portfolio’s risk: a top-holdings list may not show every holding, and the information can be dated. Check the date and scope of each fund document.

Note whether the figures describe the fund itself, a share class, or another level of investments. Avoid treating a short list of top holdings as a complete look-through; it is a signal to investigate, not proof that you know every exposure. If documents are unclear, ask the plan or fund provider what information is available.
When comparing two funds or allocation choices, examine their stock, bond, and cash mix; top holdings and overlap with your other funds; target date and glide path if applicable; fees at both the fund and underlying-fund levels; and fit with your other retirement resources, goals, and withdrawal timing. A comparison of names or recent returns alone leaves out information the SEC advises investors to consider.
Fees matter because costs can exist at more than one level: review the fund’s stated fees and, where relevant, fees charged by underlying funds. Compare the disclosures for the choices you are actually considering, rather than assuming that funds with similar labels have the same costs. This review does not mean the lowest-fee choice is automatically right for you; it is one factor alongside investment mix, overlap, goals, and withdrawal timing.

Step 4: Compare today’s allocation with your plan
Once you have a combined view, compare the current allocation with the allocation you intended—not with an assumed universal standard. Consider your retirement timeline, goals, overall resources, and when you expect to use the money. The appropriate allocation and any decision about when to rebalance are personal; a market decline does not create a universal rebalancing rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSome investors review their portfolio periodically; others use allocation thresholds to decide when to review or rebalance. Investor.gov describes both periodic and threshold-based approaches. Whichever approach you use, distinguish between a review and an instruction to trade. First establish whether the portfolio has moved away from your intended plan, and understand any plan rules, transaction effects, or tax considerations that may apply before acting.
A useful check is to write down the target you meant to follow, the current mix you calculated, and the difference between them. If you have an established review schedule or thresholds, use those as the prompt to examine the portfolio rather than reacting solely to a dramatic news day. If your account has changed because of contributions or withdrawals as well as market movement, take those flows into account before deciding whether the allocation has drifted.
If you do not have a written or otherwise clear target allocation, do not infer one from what your accounts happen to hold today. Review the plan’s investment information and your own goals and withdrawal needs. If your circumstances are complex or you are unsure how to assess the overall risk, a fiduciary financial professional may help you evaluate your situation.
Step 5: If you own a target-date fund, check its documents
A target-date fund is designed around an approximate retirement year, but the year in its name does not tell you everything about its current investments or how its mix is expected to change over time. Review the target year, the current investment mix or glide path, prospectus, latest shareholder report, and fees. Then consider how the fund fits alongside holdings in your other accounts, other investments, retirement income, and personal circumstances.
Do not assume that a target-date fund holds your entire retirement portfolio or that other accounts are already accounted for in its design. If you own additional funds or investments, assess the combined exposure and possible overlap. Fund documents can help explain the fund’s own strategy and costs, but they cannot establish whether it is suitable for your complete financial picture.
When reading the documents, separate what the fund says about its intended strategy from what you need to know about your whole financial situation. The target year, investment mix, glide path, and fees describe important features of the fund; they do not show all the other investments, resources, and withdrawal needs that may affect whether the fund fits you. If you compare target-date funds, check these features for each option and look at fees at both the fund and underlying-fund levels.

In an Investor Bulletin dated March 25, 2025, the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Assistance stated: “Target date retirement funds structured as mutual funds and ETFs do not guarantee that you will have sufficient retirement income, or a specific level of retirement income, at or after the target date.” The bulletin is investor education from SEC staff, not a rule or regulation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 6: Separate market movement from money entering or leaving
To estimate how an account changed, compare values from clearly identified dates and account for contributions, withdrawals, fees, and transactions between them. A simple difference between two balances is not necessarily the investment gain or loss: money added to or taken out of the account also changes its value.
For a basic check, write down the starting value and date, the ending value and date, and any cash flows or transactions during the interval. Then interpret the difference in light of those items. This arithmetic can help describe what happened to an account balance, but it is not a personalized investment analysis and may not isolate investment performance precisely. If you need an exact performance figure, consult the provider’s reporting methodology or a qualified professional, and confirm what time period and cash flows the calculation includes.
Keep the comparison boundaries consistent. If one balance is from a statement date and the other is from a different day, that timing difference can affect what you are comparing. Likewise, comparing a balance before a contribution with one after the contribution can make the apparent change look larger without showing what the investments themselves earned or lost. Record transfers, fees, trades, and withdrawals too, rather than attributing every difference to the market.
You can use the comparison to answer a limited question: how did the displayed account balance change over this interval, given the activity you can identify? It does not automatically answer how much of the change was caused by the sell-off or what your total realized or unrealized loss is. For that, you would need a clear accounting of holdings, dates, and transactions; the account value alone is not enough.
Why a sell-off alone is not a reason to sell
A decline can feel urgent, but the drop itself does not establish that selling is appropriate. Investor.gov cautions against rash decisions during market volatility and notes the risk of selling after a decline and missing a recovery. That warning is not a prediction that a recovery will occur on a particular schedule, or a recommendation to keep every investment regardless of circumstances.
Before making a change, ask whether your current allocation differs from your plan, whether your goals or withdrawal needs have changed, and whether you understand the investment and any consequences of a transaction. Headlines and index moves cannot answer those personal questions. If you are close to retirement, already taking withdrawals, or uncertain about your overall portfolio risk, consider discussing your holdings and needs with a fiduciary financial professional before acting.
Best Value
A review can lead to different next questions: Is the current mix still the one you intended? Are holdings concentrated or overlapping? Do you need the money soon, or have your withdrawal needs changed? Those questions are more relevant to an individual decision than trying to infer a personal recommendation from a market headline. The answer will depend on your complete holdings, balances, dates, transactions, and circumstances.
A concise portfolio review worksheet
- Accounts: Have I included every workplace plan and IRA I want to assess?
- Dates: Do the account values and fund information show dates I can identify and compare?
- Mix: What portion of the included portfolio is in stocks, bonds, cash, and other investments?
- Overlap: Do the funds hold many of the same companies or sectors?
- Plan: How does the current allocation compare with the allocation I intended and my retirement timeline?
- Fees: Have I checked fund-level fees and, where applicable, fees at underlying-fund levels?
- Flows: Did contributions, withdrawals, fees, or transactions affect the balance comparison?
- Target-date fund: Have I checked its target year, mix or glide path, prospectus, shareholder report, fees, and fit with my other holdings?
- Next step: Am I reviewing information, or am I about to trade without first understanding why?
This review can tell you where the sell-off may have affected your retirement investments and what questions to investigate. It cannot, without your complete holdings, balances, dates, transactions, and withdrawal needs, establish your personal loss or determine whether you should sell, rebalance, or change withdrawals.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether a stock market sell-off affected my 401(k) or IRA?
Check the latest statement or provider account view for each plan and IRA. Record each account’s value and date, list its investments and values or percentages, and identify the stock, bond, cash, and other exposure across accounts. Then compare the combined mix with your intended allocation. An index decline or headline alone cannot show your individual account’s change.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does a lower account balance mean I lost that amount in the sell-off?
Not necessarily. A balance is a snapshot and can change because of market movement, contributions, withdrawals, fees, and transactions. Compare values from identified dates and account for activity between them. A simple balance difference is not automatically your investment gain or loss.
Should I sell my retirement investments after a market decline?
A decline by itself does not establish that selling is appropriate. First compare your current allocation with your plan, consider your goals and withdrawal needs, and understand the investment and transaction consequences. Investor.gov cautions against rash decisions during volatility and notes that selling after a decline can mean missing a recovery; that is not a forecast of when a recovery may happen.
How do I check whether my retirement funds overlap?
Review each fund’s top holdings and, where available, its sector or asset breakdown. Compare the same companies and sectors across funds, and check the dates and scope of the documents. Multiple funds can own many of the same investments, so having several fund names does not automatically mean you are broadly diversified.
What should I review in a target-date fund?
Check the target year, investment mix or glide path, prospectus, latest shareholder report, and fees. Consider how the fund fits with your other accounts, investments, retirement income, and circumstances. A target-date fund does not guarantee a particular retirement income, and its name does not describe your entire portfolio.

The Bottom Line
To see how a sell-off may affect your retirement investments, review every account, identify your combined stock exposure, check fund overlap and fees, and compare the current mix with your intended plan. Account values and market headlines cannot determine your personal loss or tell you whether to sell; dates, cash flows, holdings, goals, and withdrawal needs matter.
