For an NSE-listed Indian stock, start with the exchange’s List of Underlyings and Information and look under Derivatives on Individual Securities. Then confirm that the particular futures or options contract is currently listed in NSE’s contract information or equity derivatives market watch. Finally, check the separate F&O ban-period report for the session in which you intend to trade. Inclusion in the underlying list means the stock is an exchange-listed F&O underlying; it does not guarantee that a new position can be opened today.

What you are actually checking

The phrase F&O eligible can describe several different exchange statuses. Keeping them separate prevents the most common mistake: seeing a stock in a derivatives list and assuming every expiry is available and unrestricted.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Status What it answers Where to verify it How often it can change
Underlying eligibility Does NSE list derivatives on this security at all? NSE List of Underlyings and Information Periodic review using rolling market data
Contract availability Is a specific stock future, option, expiry or strike currently present? NSE contract information or derivatives market watch Time-sensitive; verify for the intended trading date
Ban-period status Can market participants increase positions in the stock today? NSE F&O ban-period report Daily and temporary
Broker availability Will your broker display and accept the order in your account? Your broker’s trading terminal, after exchange checks Can vary by broker, account and risk controls

A stock can pass the first check but fail the second because no live contract matches your requested expiry or strike. It can also pass both and still be in a ban period that prevents increasing an open position. The broker screen is useful for execution, but the exchange pages establish the underlying and restriction status.

Think of the checks as a sequence rather than one yes-or-no test. The underlying list answers whether NSE has admitted the security to its individual-stock derivatives segment. Contract data answers whether the product you want exists now. The ban report answers whether the exchange currently permits an increase in exposure. A broker check comes last because it concerns execution in your particular account, not the exchange’s decision to list the security.

Step-by-step: check an NSE stock before trading

1. Open the official underlying list

  1. Go to NSE’s List of Underlyings and Information.
  2. Find the section headed Derivatives on Individual Securities. This is the relevant section for individual-stock futures and options, rather than index derivatives.
  3. Use the page’s search function, or your browser’s find command, to search the exact company name or NSE trading symbol.
  4. Match the result carefully. Similar company names, abbreviations and symbols can produce a false match, so compare the exchange symbol shown in the result with the symbol you intend to trade.

If the security appears in that section, NSE treats it as an eligible underlying in its current list. If it does not appear, do not infer eligibility from a broker menu, an old article or a historical contract. Recheck the current NSE page and any applicable tracker when the result seems surprising.

Search by symbol as well as by company name. A company’s familiar name may differ from its NSE symbol, and two businesses can have similar names. Record the exact symbol that appears in NSE’s result; that is the identifier to compare with the contract file, market watch and broker order ticket.

2. Confirm that a live contract exists

Underlying eligibility is not the same as a tradable contract for every possible combination. Open NSE’s contract-information page or the equity derivatives market watch and search the stock symbol.

  • FUTSTK identifies a stock-futures instrument.
  • OPTSTK identifies an individual-stock options instrument.
  • Check the expiry date, contract type and, for options, the strike and call/put designation shown in the current exchange data.
  • Use data for the date you plan to trade. Contract files and market-watch results are time-sensitive and can change as expiries pass or new contracts are introduced.

For a futures order, confirm that the symbol is paired with FUTSTK and that the selected expiry is still listed. For an option order, confirm OPTSTK, the expiry, strike and whether the contract is a call or put. An option chain or broker search that shows one strike does not establish that every other strike or expiry exists.

If the underlying list includes the stock but the contract page shows no matching instrument, treat that as a contract-availability issue, not proof that the stock has never been F&O eligible. Verify the symbol, instrument code and intended expiry before escalating the discrepancy. A recently expired series, an incorrect strike or a mistaken index symbol can all create an apparent mismatch.

3. Check the daily ban-period report

Before placing an order, consult NSE’s F&O ban-period report for the next trading session or the session in progress. NSE states that a security enters the ban period when its market-wide position limit, or MWPL, is crossed at 95%. The ban page shows an update date of 17 December 2024, so use the current report rather than relying on that page date or an old list.

During the ban, clients and members may trade only to reduce positions through offsetting transactions. In practical terms, a trader who is flat generally cannot use a buy order to create a new long futures position, and an existing participant cannot use trades that increase the net position. The permitted activity is position reduction, subject to the exchange’s rules and the broker’s risk controls.

The report is a separate status from eligibility. A stock can remain in the underlying list and continue to have FUTSTK or OPTSTK contracts while the 95% MWPL condition temporarily limits additional positions. Read the report for the exact session, especially when placing an order after market hours or for the next trading day.

  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

4. Verify the result in your broker only after the exchange checks

Once the three NSE checks agree, search the same symbol in your broker’s order window. Confirm that the broker offers the same instrument, expiry and strike and that your account meets its margin, product-activation and risk requirements. A broker may hide a contract temporarily, disable a product for an account or reject an order for a risk reason even when the exchange lists it.

Broker availability can also differ by account settings and internal risk controls. That does not change the exchange’s underlying-list decision. Conversely, a broker’s menu can retain a stale symbol or display a contract that is no longer available. If the broker screen conflicts with NSE, use the current exchange underlying list, contract file, market watch and ban report as the reference, then ask the broker to explain its execution restriction.

Do not treat a successful search in a trading app as confirmation that an order can increase exposure. First identify whether the app is showing a stock, an equity-delivery product, an index derivative or an old series. Match the exchange symbol, instrument code and expiry character by character before submitting the order.

Why NSE eligibility changes

NSE describes eligibility as a changing exchange status, not a permanent attribute of a listed share. The selection process uses rolling six-month data, with calculations made monthly. NSE’s selection-criteria page, updated in 2025, states the following entry tests for an individual security:

Measure NSE entry threshold What the measure represents
Average daily market capitalisation and average daily traded value Rank among the top 500 securities Scale and trading activity relative to other securities
Median quarter-sigma order size At least ₹75 lakh The order-size measure used by NSE in its liquidity assessment
Market-wide position limit (MWPL) At least ₹1,500 crore The permitted aggregate open-position limit across the market
Average daily deliverable value At least ₹35 crore The deliverable-value measure used in the selection framework

These are exchange selection criteria, not a checklist that an individual trader can certify from a single day’s volume. NSE calculates the relevant measures on a rolling basis, so the set of eligible securities may vary from month to month as market capitalisation, traded value, quarter-sigma order size, deliverable value and MWPL change. New securities are subject to approval by the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

The six-month window matters because one unusually busy session does not by itself establish eligibility. Likewise, a temporary fall in one day’s turnover does not automatically remove a stock. NSE’s monthly calculations combine the rolling observations and apply the stated framework. The practical consequence is simple: never rely on a permanent “F&O stocks” list downloaded months ago.

The thresholds also explain why eligibility is not determined solely by popularity or share price. Market capitalisation, traded value, order-size liquidity, position capacity and deliverable value are separate measures. A company can be widely known yet absent from the individual-security derivatives list if it does not meet the exchange framework.

What happens when a stock no longer qualifies

For an existing F&O stock, NSE says that failure to meet the eligibility requirements or applicable product-success criteria for three consecutive months can lead to exit, subject to the review conditions stated by the exchange. The operational effect is not necessarily an immediate disappearance of every contract.

  • It is made up of premium quality material.
  • In some cases, NSE does not issue a new far-month contract.
  • Unexpired contracts may continue until their scheduled expiry.
  • A stock excluded from the F&O list is not considered for re-inclusion for one year.
  • After that period, it must satisfy the entry criteria for six consecutive months before possible re-introduction, and re-introduction remains subject to SEBI approval.

These framework rules explain why an old article, a cached broker list and the current exchange file can appear inconsistent. For a specific security, rely on the current underlying list, the current contract information and the exchange’s introduction or exclusion tracker rather than assuming that a historical listing remains active.

Exit does not necessarily mean that every open position vanishes on the announcement date. The exchange framework contemplates continued trading of unexpired contracts in relevant circumstances, while new far-month issuance may stop. Therefore, check the current contract file for the series you hold or plan to trade and read any exchange tracker entry associated with the security.

Eligibility versus ban status: the comparison that matters

Question Eligibility result Ban result
What is being tested? Whether derivatives are listed on the stock Whether positions may be increased now
Time scale Periodic review based on rolling six-month measures Daily, temporary position restriction
Primary source Underlying list, contract information and any introduction/exclusion tracker Daily NSE ban-period report
Possible outcome Stock is an F&O underlying, or it is not New exposure is permitted, or only reducing trades are permitted

These statuses can combine in several ways. “Eligible and not banned” is the ordinary case for opening a position, subject to a live contract and broker approval. “Eligible but banned” means the product exists but increasing exposure is restricted. “Eligible but no requested contract” means the stock qualifies generally, but the exact expiry, strike or instrument is absent. “Not on the current list” means a broker display or historical contract needs independent verification.

How to interpret common search results

The stock is in the underlying list and has FUTSTK contracts

This confirms that NSE lists stock futures for the security and that the searched contract data contains a futures instrument. You still need the ban-period check and your broker’s execution confirmation before increasing a position.

The stock is in the underlying list but no option strike appears

The stock may be eligible for derivatives while the particular option expiry or strike you requested is not currently listed. Check the instrument code, expiry date and option type in the contract information. Do not substitute an absent option contract with a similarly named equity or index contract.

The stock is absent from the underlying list but appears in a broker search

Treat the broker result as unconfirmed. Refresh the official NSE list and contract files, check that you searched the exact symbol and look for an exchange tracker entry. A broker’s display is not the exchange’s eligibility decision.

The stock is listed but appears in the ban report

The two results are compatible. The underlying list answers whether derivatives are listed; the ban report answers whether positions may be increased during the relevant period. Follow the ban report’s restriction and use only permitted offsetting trades to reduce exposure.

The stock was eligible yesterday but is missing today

Do not assume that the omission is a website error or that a previous contract guarantees a current listing. Recheck the current underlying page, contract file and any introduction or exclusion tracker. If the exchange pages agree, ask the broker whether it is showing cached data.

A practical pre-order checklist

  • Identify the exact NSE symbol, not just the company’s common name.
  • Find that symbol under Derivatives on Individual Securities in the current NSE underlying list.
  • Confirm the intended instrument: FUTSTK for stock futures or OPTSTK for individual-stock options.
  • Check the precise expiry, strike and option type in current contract information or market watch.
  • Read the NSE ban-period report for the intended trade date.
  • Check your broker’s product activation, margin and account-level restrictions.
  • Save or re-open the current exchange pages if the order is placed later; eligibility and ban status are not permanent.

For an audit-friendly check, note the date and session you searched, the exact symbol, the instrument code and the expiry. If the stock is in the ban report, note that separately instead of writing simply “not eligible.” That wording would confuse a temporary position restriction with the exchange’s underlying decision.

When to recheck and how to resolve a conflict

Recheck immediately before trading if the stock has been volatile, if an expiry has just passed, if a contract is close to its final trading date or if your broker suddenly changes the available series. The underlying eligibility framework is reviewed using monthly rolling calculations, while contracts and ban status are more time-sensitive.

  1. Repeat the symbol search on the current NSE underlying page.
  2. Open the current contract-information file or market watch and verify the instrument and expiry.
  3. Read the latest ban-period report rather than relying on yesterday’s status.
  4. Compare the exchange symbol character by character with the broker symbol.
  5. If the exchange pages agree but the order is rejected, contact the broker with the exact instrument, expiry and exchange status. The remaining issue is likely execution, account or risk control rather than underlying eligibility.

Common pitfalls include using a third-party “F&O stocks” list without a date, confusing an index contract with an individual-stock contract, checking a past expiry, overlooking the call/put designation, and treating a ban as a delisting. Each is resolved by returning to the four separate checks and matching the current exchange data.

For an NSE-listed Indian security, this sequence gives a defensible answer to both questions traders often combine: whether the stock is an F&O underlying, and whether adding a position is allowed on the intended day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a stock is in F&O on NSE?

Search the exact NSE symbol in NSE’s List of Underlyings and Information under Derivatives on Individual Securities. Then confirm a current FUTSTK or OPTSTK contract in NSE contract information or the equity derivatives market watch.

Is a stock on the F&O list automatically tradable today?

No. It may lack the expiry or strike you want, or it may be in the daily ban period. Check current contract data and the ban-period report before placing an order.

What does FUTSTK mean?

FUTSTK is NSE’s instrument code for an individual-stock futures contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does OPTSTK mean?

OPTSTK is NSE’s instrument code for an individual-stock options contract. Verify the expiry, strike and call/put type as well.

Best Value

What is an F&O ban?

NSE places a security in the ban period when its market-wide position limit is crossed at 95%. During the ban, clients and members may trade only to reduce positions through offsetting transactions.

Can I buy a stock future when the stock is in the ban period?

A new position that increases exposure is generally not permitted during the ban. Trades allowed under the ban are those that reduce positions, subject to exchange rules and broker controls.

Why does my broker show an F&O stock that NSE does not show?

The broker may be displaying stale or cached data, or you may have searched a similar symbol. Recheck NSE’s current underlying list, contract file, market watch and any introduction or exclusion tracker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often can NSE eligibility change?

NSE calculates the selection measures monthly using rolling six-month data. Eligibility can therefore vary from month to month as market capitalisation, traded value, order size, deliverable value and MWPL change.

What are NSE’s entry thresholds for an individual stock?

The current criteria include a top-500 rank by average daily market capitalisation and average daily traded value, median quarter-sigma order size of at least ₹75 lakh, MWPL of at least ₹1,500 crore and average daily deliverable value of at least ₹35 crore. New securities also require SEBI approval.

What happens if an existing F&O stock no longer qualifies?

Failure to meet eligibility or applicable product-success criteria for three consecutive months can lead to exit under NSE’s review conditions. New far-month contracts may stop, while unexpired contracts may continue to expiry. Excluded stocks are not considered for re-inclusion for one year and must then meet entry criteria for six consecutive months, subject to SEBI approval.

The Bottom Line

Check four things in order: the stock’s exact symbol in NSE’s Derivatives on Individual Securities list, a live FUTSTK or OPTSTK contract for the required expiry or strike, the daily 95%-MWPL ban report, and your broker’s account-level ability to execute. Eligibility is reviewed monthly from rolling six-month measures, while contracts and bans can change much sooner.
