The dependable answer comes from comparing your computer with the exact game’s Steam Store requirements—not from the age of your PC or a single CPU speed number. Check the listed operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card and features, DirectX/API support, and free storage. Minimum specifications indicate a basic compatibility target; recommended specifications are a better starting point for comfortable play, but neither tier promises a particular frame rate or graphics preset.
Windows and SteamOS require different checks. On Windows, dxdiag identifies much of your hardware and DirectX configuration. On a Steam Deck or another SteamOS computer, Proton compatibility and the game’s Steam Deck status matter in addition to hardware.

What you need to check
Steam requirements are written for an individual game by its publisher. Open the Store page for the exact title you intend to play and use its System Requirements section as your source of truth. Do not substitute the requirements of a sequel, a similarly named game, or another title from the same studio.
Record both the minimum and recommended entries for these categories:

A listing can show separate Windows and SteamOS/Linux sections. Read the section for the platform you will actually use; the entries are not interchangeable. Valve’s example Store listing for Nautikin Adventures demonstrates why requirements must be read title by title rather than generalized.
Step 1: Find the game’s official requirements
- Open the game’s page in the Steam client or at the Steam Store website.
- Scroll to System Requirements.
- Choose the operating-system section that matches your installation: Windows, SteamOS/Linux, or another section if the publisher supplies one.
- Copy the minimum and recommended CPU, RAM, GPU, operating-system version, DirectX/API, and storage entries into a note or worksheet.
- Look below the main list for additional requirements such as an internet connection, a specific graphics feature, or a device-specific limitation.
Steam Support describes the Store requirements as publisher-supplied guidance. They are useful comparison inputs, but they are not a universal laboratory test of every hardware combination. A match therefore tells you how your system compares with the publisher’s stated target, not exactly how many frames per second you will receive.
Step 2: Identify your Windows PC’s hardware
Use dxdiag for the core details
Microsoft documents dxdiag as the built-in way to see which DirectX version is installed: Which version of DirectX is on your PC? Steam Support also directs players to this tool when identifying graphics hardware and drivers.

- Open Windows Search, type
dxdiag, and launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. You can also pressWindows + R, enterdxdiag, and press Enter. - If Windows asks whether it should check for digitally signed drivers, allow the check unless you have a specific reason not to.
- On the System tab, note the operating system, processor, installed memory, and DirectX version.
- Open the Display (or display-adapter) tab. Record the graphics device name, display memory information, driver date/version, and feature information shown there.
- If the computer has more than one graphics adapter, inspect every display tab. A game may launch on integrated graphics even when a discrete GPU is installed.
dxdiag does not show every value needed for every game. Check free disk space separately in File Explorer, and use the game’s listing or documentation for any feature-level, Vulkan, ray-tracing, or other API requirement.
Check free storage in the installation location
In File Explorer, right-click the drive or library location where Steam will install the game and choose Properties. Compare the available space—not the drive’s total capacity—with the Store listing. Leave additional room for patches, shader caches, save files, and the operating system. A game can satisfy CPU and GPU requirements and still fail to install or update when the destination drive is full.

How to compare each requirement correctly
Operating system
Match the Windows edition and minimum version stated by the publisher. A game that lists a Windows requirement does not automatically have a native SteamOS build. Conversely, a SteamOS/Linux entry should be evaluated using the Linux/Proton information rather than treated as a Windows specification.
Processor (CPU)
Compare the exact model or its general performance class, not just the advertised clock speed. Two processors can have similar gigahertz ratings but different architectures, core counts, cache sizes, and performance. If the listing names a particular CPU, look up your model’s generation and compare it as a whole. A CPU that falls below the minimum can limit simulation, artificial intelligence, loading, or frame-time consistency even when the graphics card is fast enough.
Memory (RAM)
Compare installed system RAM with the game’s requirement, while remembering that Windows and background applications consume part of it. Steam Support notes that available RAM can affect rendering, frame rate, and perceived lag; its performance guidance is available at Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software. Close unnecessary applications when testing, but do not treat that as a substitute for meeting the publisher’s minimum.
Graphics card and VRAM
Use the GPU model shown in dxdiag, not a generic label such as “Intel graphics” or “8 GB graphics.” Compare the model’s capabilities and any stated VRAM requirement. Integrated and discrete GPUs with similar names can perform very differently, and a laptop may use a lower-power version of a desktop GPU.
DirectX, Vulkan, and feature levels
A DirectX version number alone is not enough. Steam Support explains that a GPU can report support for a stated DirectX version while lacking the pixel-shader level or another graphics feature the game actually needs: DirectX and Pixel Shader Requirements for Games on Steam. If the Store page names a feature, verify that the specific GPU supports it; do not infer support solely from the DirectX number in dxdiag.

Storage
Check the free space on the drive assigned to the Steam library. The requirement may describe the initial installation, while updates and temporary files need more working room. If Steam reports insufficient disk space, move another installation, choose a different library, or free space before treating the problem as a hardware incompatibility.

Use the two tiers for different decisions. Minimum is the publisher’s lower reference point for launching or running the game under an unspecified test configuration. Recommended is the more useful target when you want a stronger chance of stable play at the publisher’s intended settings. Neither entry establishes a guaranteed FPS, resolution, quality preset, or frame-time result across all PCs.

Requirements can also omit details that affect play, such as unusually heavy shader compilation, a high-refresh display target, or a particular upscaling mode. Treat those omissions as uncertainty rather than silently converting the table into a performance promise.
Make a side-by-side compatibility worksheet
Writing the values down prevents a common mistake: checking only the GPU and overlooking the operating system, RAM, API, or storage. Use a row for each category and mark the result as meets, below, or unclear.

Update graphics drivers before judging performance
If your hardware appears to meet the listing but the game has low performance, crashes, missing effects, or visual corruption, check the graphics driver. Steam Support warns that an outdated driver can reduce performance even when the GPU itself meets the published requirement. Its driver guidance is at Updating Drivers.

dxdiagto note the GPU model and current driver date/version. - Go to the support page for the manufacturer of that GPU and select the driver for the exact model and Windows version.
- Install the current stable driver, restart the PC, and launch the game again.
- Record whether the symptom changed. If it did not, continue with the game’s own patches, graphics settings, and support guidance rather than assuming the driver was the only cause.
Do not install a driver intended for a different GPU family simply because the product names look similar. Laptop graphics may also require a driver supplied or validated by the laptop manufacturer.

A requirements match narrows the compatibility question; it does not diagnose every launch or performance problem. Work through the symptom that you actually see.
The game will not install
- Recheck free space on the selected Steam library drive, including room for temporary download and update files.
- Confirm that Steam is installing the platform version you intend to use.
- Check the Store page for an additional operating-system or connection requirement.
The game launches but runs poorly
- Update the GPU driver first.
- Confirm that the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Close memory-heavy background programs and compare available RAM with the game’s listing.
- Lower resolution or demanding effects as a diagnostic step, then test one change at a time.
- Check whether the game is compiling shaders or loading assets; an initial session can behave differently from later sessions.
These steps can identify a bottleneck, but they do not turn a minimum match into a guaranteed performance level.
The game reports a DirectX or graphics-feature error
- Compare the required API and feature wording on the Store page with the GPU’s actual capabilities.
- Do not rely only on the DirectX version displayed by
dxdiag; consult the pixel-shader and feature explanation in Steam Support’s DirectX guidance. - Install the correct current driver and restart before testing again.
The game crashes after an update
- Read the title’s current Store and community notices for a game-specific change in requirements.
- Recheck driver version and available storage; updates can change both software and disk needs.
- Separate a new game patch problem from a hardware shortfall by comparing the exact error with the publisher’s support instructions.
Steam Deck and SteamOS require a separate compatibility check
A Windows requirements comparison cannot answer whether a game works well on SteamOS. SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allows many Windows Steam games to run there. Valve says Proton supports “over 18,000 titles” on its SteamOS page, a catalog count stated as “last we checked” and accessed October 13, 2026—not a percentage of Windows PCs and not a guarantee for a particular game: Valve’s SteamOS information.

- Check the Steam Deck compatibility label and any detailed notes about controls, text legibility, launcher behavior, or settings.
- Read the SteamOS/Linux requirements if the publisher supplies them.
- Consider Proton behavior as its own variable. A game may work after a Proton update, regress after a game patch, or require a particular compatibility setting.
- Use the Deck’s actual hardware and storage limits in addition to the compatibility label; a Windows desktop GPU comparison does not transfer directly.
Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program is a useful screening signal for games that do not work well on SteamOS, but the status can change as game, driver, and Proton versions change. For a non-Deck SteamOS computer, check the specific hardware and distribution as well as the title’s Proton status.
How to compare two games or two PCs
When choosing between titles or deciding which PC is the better match, compare the same axes for both rather than relying on a single “can it run?” label.

No official source in this guidance supplies a universal formula that converts a requirements match into an FPS number. If you need a specific prediction, provide the game’s exact Store requirements, your complete hardware details, target resolution, and desired settings; without those inputs, a checklist is more honest than a guessed benchmark.

- Open the exact game’s Steam Store page and read the requirements for your platform.
- Write down minimum and recommended CPU, RAM, GPU/VRAM, operating system, API/features, and storage.
- Run
dxdiagon Windows and record every display adapter, driver version, processor, RAM, and DirectX version. - Check free space on the drive that will hold the Steam library.
- Compare GPU features, not just the DirectX version number.
- Update the graphics driver if the machine meets the list but shows performance or rendering problems.
- For Steam Deck or SteamOS, check the current compatibility label and Proton/Linux information separately.
- Make your purchase decision based on the complete comparison, not on a minimum-spec match alone.

Why can a PC with the right DirectX version still fail?
