How to Check Whether a Steam Game Is Verified or Playable on Steam Deck

By Freedom251 Team · · 16 min read

Open the game’s current Steam Store page or its entry in your Steam Deck library and read the Steam Deck compatibility badge. If Valve has reviewed the title, open the accompanying compatibility details before deciding. Those details explain any controller, launcher, display, or system caveat that the single-word badge cannot show.

The four possible labels are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. A rating is a Valve assessment for Steam Deck, not a permanent promise and not a substitute for checking the live listing when you are ready to play. You do not need to own a Steam Deck to perform this check; the Store listing is available before purchase.

Check a game from the Steam Store

The Store is useful when you are considering a game you do not own yet. Valve displays Deck compatibility for reviewed titles on the title’s Steam listing, so you can check before paying, downloading, or choosing between editions.

  1. Open Steam and search for the game by its exact name.
  2. Open the game’s Store page rather than relying on a search-result summary, a screenshot, or a third-party compatibility list.
  3. Find the Steam Deck compatibility rating on the page. The badge will identify the title as Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
  4. Read the compatibility details attached to the rating. If Valve found a limitation, the detail explains what you may need to do.
  5. Use the result as a current purchasing or installation decision, remembering that Valve’s review process and game software continue to change.

This method answers “Is this Steam game verified on Steam Deck?” without requiring a Deck in your hands. The rating is part of the Steam listing, and the current listing is more useful than an old article that may describe a previous status.

Why the Store page is the right place to verify

A search engine result or a community spreadsheet can be useful context, but neither is the official status for the title you are about to install. The Store page is tied to the game’s current Steam entry. It also lets you open the same compatibility explanation Valve used for the badge. If a game has several similarly named releases, open each exact product page: a rating belongs to that specific listing.

Check a game in the Steam Deck library

The library view is faster for games you already own or have added to your account. Valve says the Deck library displays compatibility ratings and supports dynamic filtering, allowing you to narrow the library by rating.

  1. Open the Steam Deck library.
  2. Locate the game you want to assess.
  3. Read the compatibility badge shown with the library entry.
  4. Open or read the compatibility details for a reviewed title. Treat the explanation as part of the rating, not as optional fine print.
  5. When browsing several games, use the library’s compatibility filter to show the category you want to investigate.

A filter helps you sort a collection, but it does not replace reading an individual game’s notes. Two games with the same label can involve different kinds of interaction, and the details identify the specific condition Valve observed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the filter for a large library

If you are deciding what to install next, filter by Verified first for the most straightforward starting list, then inspect Playable titles whose stated adjustment is acceptable to you. Keep Unknown titles in a separate group instead of mixing them with reviewed games. A filter is a way to narrow the list; it is not a new rating and does not provide extra information beyond the category assigned to each entry.

What each Steam Deck label means

Label Valve’s meaning How to use it when deciding
Verified The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box. Expect the reviewed experience to meet Valve’s Deck criteria without a setup change being required for normal play. Still read the details for the scope of the review.
Playable The game may require some manual tweaking by the user to play. Plan for an adjustment such as choosing a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. The game can be usable, but it is not a promise of a no-setup experience.
Unsupported The game is currently not functional on Steam Deck. Do not treat it as a normal Deck purchase or installation choice. “Currently” matters because Valve says ratings and Deck support can change.
Unknown Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. It is an unreviewed status, not an implied approval. You cannot call an Unknown title Verified or Playable from the badge alone.

Valve’s definitions and the compatibility explanation appear on the official Steam Deck Verified page. The badge answers the category question; the attached notes answer what that category means for that particular title.

Do not confuse the four categories

Verified and Playable are both reviewed categories, but they describe different amounts of expected user involvement. Unsupported is also a reviewed conclusion: Valve currently considers the title nonfunctional. Unknown says only that the review has not happened. In particular, Unknown is not a softer form of Verified, and Unsupported is not the same as “Valve has not tested it.”

How to interpret a Playable rating

Playable is the label most likely to be misunderstood. It does not mean that the game is broken, and it does not mean that every player will have the same effortless experience as with a Verified title. It means Valve expects some manual adjustment may be needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controller configuration

Valve’s example is manually selecting a community controller configuration. If the game does not present the exact input arrangement you want automatically, you may need to choose a layout supplied by the Steam community before playing. That is a setup action, not evidence that the game is Unsupported. The important question is whether you are comfortable performing that action once or whenever you change controls.

Touchscreen navigation

Valve also gives the example of using the Deck’s touchscreen to navigate a launcher. A launcher that is awkward with physical controls can still satisfy the broader Playable definition when the touchscreen supplies the missing interaction. This caveat concerns the route into the game; it does not by itself say that every in-game menu requires touch.

Read the note before launching

The badge alone does not identify which adjustment applies. Open the game’s compatibility details and note whether the issue concerns controls, a launcher, text, display behavior, or another condition. This turns a vague “Playable” result into a preparation checklist.

Decide whether the adjustment fits your routine

One manual controller-layout selection may be trivial for one player and an unacceptable interruption for another. Likewise, a touchscreen launcher may be fine at home but inconvenient when you want to wake the Deck and play immediately. Valve’s label tells you that an adjustment may exist; the title-specific detail tells you what to expect. Use both pieces of information rather than treating every Playable game as equivalent.

What Valve checks for Verified status

Valve groups its Deck Verified review under four criteria. They explain why a game that runs on a conventional desktop can still receive a different Deck assessment.

Criterion What the review covers Why it matters on a Deck
Input Full controller support, appropriate controller input icons, and automatic on-screen keyboard display when needed. The player should be able to operate the game with Deck controls and should see the correct button prompts. If text entry is required, the on-screen keyboard should appear when appropriate.
Display Support for the Deck’s default resolution, 1280×800 or 1280×720, good default settings, and legible text. A game can start yet remain uncomfortable if its defaults do not suit the Deck screen or if menus and subtitles are difficult to read.
Seamlessness No compatibility warnings and a launcher that can be navigated with a controller. The path from launching the game to reaching play should not depend on unexplained warnings or a mouse-and-keyboard-only launcher.
System Support Support for the game and its middleware when it runs through Proton, including anti-cheat support. Compatibility includes the software layers around the game, not only the game’s graphics and controls.

Input: more than “does a controller work?”

Valve’s input criterion combines usable controller support, correct prompts, and keyboard behavior. A game that accepts some controller input but displays the wrong button icons can be confusing. A title that asks you to enter a name, code, or search term should also bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed. These checks explain why ordinary desktop play with a physical keyboard is not enough to establish Verified status.

Display: resolution and readability

The Deck’s default display targets are 1280×800 or 1280×720. Verified review considers support for those resolutions, sensible default settings, and legible text. A title may launch successfully on a desktop monitor while presenting tiny menus or unsuitable defaults on a handheld. Readability is therefore part of the compatibility assessment, not merely a graphics-quality preference.

Seamlessness: the route from icon to game

Seamlessness covers compatibility warnings and controller navigation through any launcher. A game that requires a separate launcher is not automatically excluded, but the launcher should be navigable with the Deck’s controls for the title to meet this criterion. A warning that requires unexplained intervention can affect the assessment even if the game eventually starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Support: Proton and middleware

SteamOS uses Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer, to run games without developers doing separate porting work. The review therefore considers the game and its middleware when Proton is involved, including anti-cheat support. An apparently simple game can depend on an online service, launcher, or anti-cheat component that affects whether the complete software stack works on Deck.

Why Steam Deck compatibility is different from ordinary PC compatibility

Steam Deck uses SteamOS, and Valve supplies Proton as a compatibility layer. Valve describes Proton as making it possible to run games without developers doing porting work. That architecture allows many Windows games to run, but it also makes middleware, launchers, input handling, resolution, and anti-cheat part of the Deck question. Valve’s software overview explains the relationship at Steam Deck Software.

Consequently, a desktop system’s operating system, monitor, keyboard, and mouse may conceal issues that matter on a handheld. A title can be technically launchable yet still need a manual controller layout, touchscreen interaction, a text-size adjustment, or a different path through its launcher. The Deck badge is intended to account for that complete experience.

This is why “it runs on my PC” and “it is Verified on Deck” are not interchangeable statements. The first describes one computer’s result. The second reflects Valve’s review of controls, display, seamlessness, and system support for the Deck environment.

A practical decision process when comparing games

When two games are competing for your time or storage, compare the badge first and then compare the title-specific notes. Use this order so a favorable-sounding detail does not obscure a more important limitation.

  1. Separate reviewed from unreviewed. Verified, Playable, and Unsupported indicate that Valve has assigned a category. Unknown means the review has not happened, so it should remain a separate group.
  2. Rank the category. Verified is the strongest out-of-the-box result. Playable signals expected manual work. Unsupported is currently nonfunctional according to Valve’s assessment.
  3. Read the caveat for each reviewed game. Record the actual action required, such as selecting a controller layout or touching a launcher.
  4. Check the relevant criterion. For a game with a launcher note, focus on seamlessness; for a game with small or awkward menus, focus on display and readability; for a game with unusual controls, focus on input.
  5. Recheck the live listing before buying or starting a long download. Valve’s review program is ongoing and the rating can change as games, updates, and Deck capabilities change.
Question to ask Where the answer appears What the answer tells you
Has Valve reviewed this title? The badge in the Store or library Verified, Playable, or Unsupported is reviewed; Unknown is not.
Will I need a manual setup step? Compatibility details Look for controller-layout, touchscreen, launcher, or other stated conditions.
Will controls and text suit the handheld? Input and display criteria in the review explanation These indicate whether the Deck’s controls, default resolution, prompts, and readability were considered.
Could the result change later? The current Steam listing and Valve’s ongoing-review guidance The rating is a current assessment, not a permanent guarantee.

Compare like with like

When both games are Verified, read the details anyway and compare the relevant criteria. When one is Playable and the other is Unknown, do not assume Unknown is better simply because it has no visible caveat; it has not been reviewed. When one is Unsupported and the other is Playable, the latter is the reviewed option with a possible manual adjustment, while the former is currently nonfunctional according to Valve.

What Unknown does—and does not—tell you

Unknown is often mistaken for a neutral recommendation. It is more precise to read it as “Valve has not checked this game for compatibility yet.” There is no Verified or Playable conclusion in that label.

If you see Unknown, record that uncertainty explicitly. You may decide to investigate other current player information, but do not rewrite the Steam status as a positive result. If the game matters to your purchase decision, revisit its Store or library entry later because Valve adds reviews as its program proceeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unknown also does not tell you whether the game will fail. It tells you that Valve has not assigned one of the reviewed categories. Treat the lack of a review as missing information, not as evidence in either direction.

How Unsupported should be handled

Unsupported means Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Steam Deck. For a straightforward buying decision, that is a stop signal: choose a title with a reviewed working category unless you have a separate, informed reason to experiment.

The word “currently” is important. Valve says the review process is ongoing, new titles and updates arrive every day, and changes to Deck can enable games that were previously Unsupported. If you are checking an old recommendation, inspect the live Steam listing instead of relying on a screenshot or an older article.

Do not quietly relabel Unsupported as Playable because a desktop version works, because Proton exists, or because another player reports success. Those facts do not change the category shown for the current Steam entry. Recheck the official listing if the game receives an update or if you are making the decision again later.

LCD and OLED model coverage

Valve says titles that have already been tested keep the same rating for Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Therefore, you do not need a different Verified or Playable lookup solely because the handheld has a different screen technology. Use the title’s current badge and details.

This shared rating does not turn the label into a hardware-performance guarantee for every setting or future game update. It means Valve’s tested compatibility rating applies to both Deck model families. The normal check remains the same whether you are choosing an LCD or OLED Deck.

Keep the check current

Compatibility is time-sensitive in two directions: games receive updates, and Valve continues reviewing titles and improving Deck support. A rating you saw months ago may not describe the current listing, while an older Unsupported result may later change.

  • Check the Store page or library entry at the point you are deciding.
  • Read the attached details rather than saving only the badge color or word.
  • For a game you have not played recently, repeat the check after a major game or SteamOS update.
  • When sharing advice with someone else, include the category and the specific caveat, not just “it runs on Deck.”

Valve’s official Deck Verified guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, describes the review as ongoing. That is why a current listing is the appropriate reference for a purchase or installation decision.

When a game’s badge is not enough

The rating is the quickest official answer, but a reader may still need to decide whether a stated adjustment is acceptable. A Playable game that needs one controller-layout selection may fit your routine, while a Playable game that requires repeated touchscreen navigation may not. Make that judgment from the compatibility detail attached to the specific title, rather than assuming all Playable games involve the same effort.

Likewise, do not infer that Verified means identical performance settings across every future version of a game. Verified describes Valve’s reviewed Deck experience under its input, display, seamlessness, and system-support criteria. The responsible way to make a current decision is to read the listing as it exists when you plan to play.

Do you need to own a Steam Deck to check compatibility?

No. You can search Steam and read a game’s Store-page badge before purchasing a Deck or the game itself. The Deck library is convenient for titles already associated with your account, but it is not required for the basic lookup. If you later own a Deck, the same title’s library entry provides the rating and its details there as well.

Can a Verified game become Unsupported?

Valve presents the rating as a current assessment while its review process continues and games, updates, and Deck features change. Do not treat any badge as a permanent guarantee. If a title is important to you, check the current Store or library entry again after a substantial game or SteamOS change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Playable worse than Verified?

Playable indicates that manual tweaking may be required; Verified is Valve’s “works great … right out of the box” category. That makes Verified the stronger choice for a no-setup expectation. Playable is not the same as broken, however. Its usefulness depends on whether the stated adjustment—such as a community controller layout or touchscreen launcher navigation—is acceptable to you.

  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

What should I do with an Unknown game?

Keep it in the unreviewed group. Unknown means Valve has not checked compatibility yet, so neither Verified nor Playable should be inferred. Revisit the live listing later if the game is central to your buying decision.

Does the badge cover anti-cheat and launchers?

Yes, Valve’s Verified criteria include system support for games and middleware running through Proton, including anti-cheat support. Seamlessness also considers whether a launcher can be navigated with a controller and whether compatibility warnings appear. Read the title-specific details to see which condition affected the rating.

What resolution does Verified consider?

Valve’s display criterion includes support for the Deck’s default resolution, 1280×800 or 1280×720, along with good default settings and legible text. This is one reason a game can be acceptable on a desktop but receive a different Deck assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the same rating on LCD and OLED?

Yes. Valve says titles already tested keep the same rating for Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Check the current badge and details for the game rather than looking for a model-specific category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I see Steam Deck compatibility in Steam?

Open the game’s Steam Store page or find it in the Steam Deck library. The entry shows the Steam Deck badge and, for a reviewed title, the compatibility details. In the library, you can also use compatibility ratings as filters.

What does Playable mean on Steam Deck?

Valve defines Playable as a game that may require some manual tweaking. Its examples include selecting a community controller configuration or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Read the title’s details to identify the actual adjustment.

Does Unknown mean a game will not work?

No. Unknown means Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet. It is not a Verified or Playable result, but it is also not Valve’s Unsupported finding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Unsupported mean?

Unsupported means Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Steam Deck. Because reviews and software change, check the current listing again if the title receives updates or you are making the decision later.

Are Steam Deck ratings different for LCD and OLED?

Valve says titles that have already been tested keep the same rating for Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. Use the game’s current badge and details for either model.

Why can a game that works on my PC be different on Steam Deck?

Deck uses SteamOS and Proton, and Valve’s review also considers controller input, button icons, on-screen keyboard behavior, default resolution, text legibility, launcher navigation, middleware, and anti-cheat support. A desktop setup may not test those same conditions.

Do I need a Steam Deck to check a game’s badge?

No. The game’s Steam Store page displays the compatibility status, so you can check before buying a Deck or the game. The Deck library is an additional place to view the same type of information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I compare when choosing between two Deck games?

Compare the category first, then read each game’s compatibility details. For Playable titles, compare the manual action required; also consider the input, display, seamlessness, and system-support criteria. Keep Unknown titles separate because they are unreviewed.

The Bottom Line

To check a Steam game for Deck play, open its current Store page or Steam Deck library entry, read the badge, and open the compatibility details. Verified means Valve expects a great out-of-the-box experience; Playable may need manual adjustment; Unsupported is currently nonfunctional; Unknown has not been reviewed. Ratings apply to LCD and OLED Deck models, but Valve’s ongoing reviews and game updates make the live Steam listing the source to check whenever your decision matters.
