A Steam sale badge—and even a steep discount percentage—doesn’t tell you whether a game is unusually cheap. Check the price history for the exact edition you plan to buy, in your own Steam currency, then compare today’s price with earlier sale prices and the lowest price the tracker recorded. Treat that low as a record within the tracker’s coverage, not proof of a lifetime low.
Why the discount percentage can mislead
A discount measures the gap between the listed price and the current price; it does not show how today’s price compares with past sales. SteamDB says its live deal rating is based on the current discount percentage, not price history. A large percentage is therefore not, by itself, evidence that a game is at an unusually good price.

There is no universal discount percentage that makes a Steam deal good. The useful comparison is the amount you would pay now against the game’s earlier prices, considered alongside the edition’s contents and what you are willing to spend.

Search for the game on SteamDB, then open its prices page and review the price table or graph. SteamDB provides price history for games, bundles, and packages.

Choose the region or currency that matches your own Steam store. Compare the current price with earlier sale prices and the tracker’s displayed low.

Before buying, verify the current amount on the Steam store. Price-history data is a useful reference, but it may not be current or complete.

Describe a displayed low as the lowest recorded in that tracker’s data, not an all-time low. SteamDB says its low reflects the period it has recorded. Its history also has a source boundary: SteamDB says that historical US, UK, and EU Steam prices before 2016 come from IsThereAnyDeal. The coverage and source can affect what a chart shows.
Make sure you are comparing the right edition
A game can have several packages or editions, and a bundle may change the effective price. Check that the history you are viewing matches the purchase you intend to make. Compare the contents—not just the title or headline price—of any alternative package or bundle, and account for items you already own. SteamDB advises checking for a cheaper bundle when a discount looks wrong and provides bundle discovery and filtering.

Use the price for your own store region
Compare what you can actually pay in your own Steam store, rather than relying on another region’s price. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says Steam supports pricing in 37 currencies and that partners choose and manage product prices and discounts. A price shown for a different currency or store region may not be available to you. This comparison is about your current store; changing your region is not a way to evaluate a deal.
Decide whether to buy now or wait
Use past lows and sale patterns to judge whether today’s price meets your expectations—not to predict the next sale. Publishers choose discounts, and SteamDB says it cannot know which specific games will be discounted, or at what prices, in an upcoming sale. A game may reach its previous low again, fall below it, or not do so on a schedule you can rely on.

- Buy now if today’s price is acceptable to you for the exact content you want.
- Wait if the history shows lower prices you would prefer and you are comfortable with no guarantee of when, or whether, they will return.
- Consider a bundle or another package if its included content makes the total price better for you, after excluding items you already own.
What the price history can—and cannot—tell you
SteamDB says its data is provided as-is and does not guarantee its accuracy, completeness, or timeliness. Use the chart to inform a decision, then check the official Steam price before checkout. The record can show what the tracker captured; it cannot establish every historical price or promise a future discount.
