There is no Steam-wide guarantee. Your progress can carry over only if the game keeps a usable save and, where applicable, Steam Cloud has uploaded the relevant files. Before the Free Weekend ends, check the game’s event announcement, look for the Steam Cloud indicator, review the per-game Cloud setting in Steam, and wait for synchronization to finish. You may still need to buy the game to continue playing.
What you need to establish
Two separate questions are often confused:
- Can you keep launching the game? The free entitlement may end when the event closes, requiring a purchase.
- Will the game still know your progress? That depends on the game’s save system, whether the save remains on your computer or in Steam Cloud, and whether the latest version synchronized successfully.
A retained save does not give you a right to keep playing for free, and buying the game does not restore a save that was deleted or never synchronized.

The game, not Steam, defines Cloud coverage
Steam Support says developers can customize how Steam Cloud is used, including which user files are uploaded. A Steam Cloud logo on the store page therefore shows that the game uses Cloud in some way; it does not prove that every save, profile, settings file or Free Weekend progress file is included. Steam also notes that many games do not use Steam Cloud for save games at all. Read the game’s own announcement or support documentation for the definitive statement about its event.

Why the purchase question is separate
A Free Weekend is a temporary license to launch and play a particular title. When that entitlement expires, the game can stop allowing play even though its files and save data remain installed. If the event terms say that a purchase is required, the cost is the game’s normal Steam purchase price at that time; the event itself does not create a permanent entitlement. Conversely, purchasing the full version changes access, not the contents of your hard drive. It cannot recreate a local save that was deleted, overwritten or never uploaded.

That distinction also explains why a game can preserve progress for a later purchase without promising that you can continue for free. Check the event notice for both clauses: what happens to access when the promotion ends, and what happens to an existing save after purchase.
Check before the Free Weekend ends
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Look for the Steam Cloud logo in the feature information. Treat this as an indication that Cloud exists, not as proof that the particular progress file is covered.
- Read the current Free Weekend announcement. Look for explicit wording about whether a purchase is required after the event and whether progress carries over after purchase. Event conditions are title-specific and can change between promotions.
- Inspect the per-game Cloud setting. In Steam Library, open the game’s Properties and inspect the General tab for its Cloud synchronization setting. If the game supports Cloud, also confirm that Cloud is enabled in Steam client settings.
- Check the account and edition. Make sure you are reading the notice for the same Steam app and edition you played. A statement for an earlier promotion, a different edition or a different region may not govern the current event.
- Finish a normal save. Use the game’s own save or quit process rather than terminating it while it is writing data. The important test is the save created during your latest session, not an older file.
- End the session while connected to the internet. Leave Steam open long enough for synchronization to complete. Do not close Steam, shut down the computer or move to another device while a sync is pending.
- Resolve any warning before proceeding. If Steam reports a synchronization or upload error, do not dismiss it and launch the game anyway. An older version can replace a newer one, or Steam can create a conflict that leaves the latest progress unavailable.
- Protect a local-only save. If the game does not use Cloud, find the publisher’s documented local-save location and make a copy before uninstalling or changing computers. The Steam Cloud folders listed below are not a universal map of every game’s local saves.
A five-minute final-session audit
On your last play session, note the point at which the game says it has saved, then leave through its normal menu. Wait at the Library or client level until Steam no longer shows pending Cloud work. If a status message remains, treat the upload as unfinished. A screenshot or saved copy of the event terms can help you check the purchase and retention conditions later, especially when the promotion has ended and its store wording changes.
How to interpret Steam Cloud evidence
| What you observe | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Cloud logo on the store page | The game has Steam Cloud integration. | That your specific progress file is uploaded. |
| Cloud enabled in the game’s Properties and Steam client settings | Steam is permitted to synchronize Cloud data for the game. | That synchronization succeeded or that the developer included the save file. |
| Steam reports synchronization completed after your session | The available Cloud data was uploaded or reconciled successfully for that session. | That a developer omitted no required file from Cloud. |
| No Cloud indicator or a developer statement that saves are local | Your progress may exist only on the computer where you played. | That a later installation or another computer will find it automatically. |
Steam’s platform setting and the developer’s file selection work together. A game can expose Cloud while leaving a particular save outside the synchronized set, so the game’s documentation remains the deciding evidence.

Evidence in the right order
Use the strongest title-specific evidence first. An announcement for the current event is more relevant than a general forum comment. A developer support article can explain the save location and Cloud file list. Steam’s store icon and settings confirm that the platform is available, but they cannot answer which files the developer selected. If the statements conflict or are silent, ask the developer rather than treating silence as a promise.
What happens when the event expires?
The end of free access and the lifetime of the save are independent. A game may stop launching for a player who has not purchased it, while retaining the save so that a later purchase can resume the session. Conversely, a local save can be lost during an uninstall even though purchasing the game later would normally allow continuation.
The title-specific terms are decisive. For example, a March 30, 2025 announcement for Dinkum stated that players had to purchase the game to continue after its Free Weekend and that progress would carry over after purchase only while the save data remained available. That announcement is an example of how one publisher handled one event; it is not a rule for every Steam Free Weekend. Read the latest announcement for the game you played.

Local saves versus Steam Cloud
When Cloud is used
Cloud can make a save available after you install the purchased game on the same or another computer, but only if the relevant files are part of the game’s Cloud configuration and the final upload completed. If a second device shows an older state, return to the original device first. Check whether the latest save is still present there, connect it to the internet, and allow Steam to synchronize before making further changes.
Do not create a new campaign or overwrite an empty slot on the second device while investigating. That new data can become another version for Steam to reconcile, making it harder to identify the original progress.
When the save is local-only
Steam Support warns that many games do not use Steam Cloud for saves. In that case, progress remains on the machine where it was created. Uninstalling can remove the game’s local save, depending on how that title handles its data. Do not assume that reinstalling will recreate the completed state.
Before uninstalling, identify whether the game’s instructions distinguish between the installation directory, a user-data directory and a Steam Cloud directory. Copy the documented local save to a separate location without editing the original. Keep the copy until you have confirmed that the purchased installation loads the expected progress.

| Operating system | Steam Cloud folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata |
Those paths are for Steam Cloud data. Individual games may keep local saves somewhere else, so use the publisher’s instructions to identify the correct folder. If you need to preserve a local save, copy it to a separate location before uninstalling; do not edit or overwrite the original while trying to make a backup.
Fix synchronization problems before changing devices
Steam shows a sync or upload error
- Keep the computer connected to the internet.
- Do not choose an option that launches the game while ignoring the warning if the latest progress matters.
- Check the original computer for the newest save and allow Steam another synchronization attempt.
- If Steam presents a conflict, compare the available versions carefully and choose the one that contains the latest progress. Preserve a copy of any local file before resolving an unfamiliar conflict.
Steam cautions that ignoring a synchronization failure and launching anyway can produce a conflict or cause lost progress. A failed upload is not evidence that the save was safely stored in the Cloud.
The new computer has no progress
- Stop playing on the new computer so it cannot create a newer empty save.
- Return to the computer used during the Free Weekend.
- Confirm that the expected save is still present there.
- With Steam Cloud enabled for the game, connect to the internet and wait for synchronization to complete.
- Install or launch the game on the new computer only after Steam has finished reconciling the data.
If the original computer no longer has the save and Cloud never contained it, Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. The game’s developer is the appropriate source for information about save-file locations and which files are integrated with Cloud.
A practical decision table
| Situation | Can you keep playing after the event? | What is likely to happen to progress? | Best action |
|---|---|---|---|
| The event announcement requires purchase, and the save is still available | Only after purchasing the game, according to that event’s terms. | The publisher may allow the existing save to continue. | Buy through the appropriate Steam listing if you want to continue, then launch with the same Steam account. |
| Cloud is supported, the save is included, and synchronization completed | Purchase requirements still depend on the event. | The synchronized save should be available to the game after installation. | Wait for the final sync and avoid creating a competing save on another device. |
| Cloud is disabled or the game is local-only | Purchase requirements still depend on the event. | The save remains on the original machine and may be lost if its local data is removed. | Follow the publisher’s backup instructions before uninstalling or replacing the computer. |
| A sync error remains unresolved | The event may end before the latest data is safely stored. | Steam may retain an older version or create a conflict. | Keep the original device intact and resolve the error before launching elsewhere. |
How to verify a specific game’s policy
Use this order when the store page does not answer the question:
- Search the game’s Steam announcements for the current Free Weekend notice.
- Read the publisher’s support article or official community guidance for save retention and local-save locations.
- Check whether the announcement distinguishes the right to launch from the ability to resume progress.
- Confirm whether the statement applies to the current event, region and edition. A dated announcement for a previous promotion may not govern a later one.
- Contact the developer if the wording does not say whether the relevant save files are included in Steam Cloud.
Steam Support specifically directs players to developers for clarification about which files are integrated with Cloud and for help locating local saves. The developer’s answer is more reliable than assuming that a Cloud logo covers every file.
Common mistakes that put progress at risk
- Assuming Cloud means every save is backed up. Developers choose the files that Cloud uploads.
- Assuming a purchase preserves a deleted local file. Purchase changes access to the full game; it does not recreate missing data.
- Uninstalling immediately after the event. A local-only save may disappear with the installation or its associated data.
- Ignoring a sync warning. Continuing can create a conflict or leave an older version as the one Steam uses.
- Testing on another device too soon. An empty or outdated save created there can complicate reconciliation.
- Generalizing another game’s announcement. The Dinkum terms demonstrate one publisher’s policy, not a universal Steam rule.
- Relying on an old promotion notice. Event dates and conditions can change, so a previous Free Weekend is not proof of the current one.
- Confusing Cloud files with all local files. Steam’s listed Cloud folders do not identify every title’s ordinary save directory.
What to do on the final session
For the safest handoff, play until a natural save point, exit through the game’s normal menu, keep Steam online, and wait until the game’s Cloud status no longer shows pending work. Then capture the game’s event terms or save guidance for your records. If Cloud is unavailable, make the publisher-recommended local backup before uninstalling. If any status remains unresolved, leave the original installation untouched and ask the developer for help rather than experimenting on a second computer.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to buy the game to keep playing after the Free Weekend?
Usually the event notice answers this, and some events require a purchase when free access ends. A retained save does not extend the free license. Check the current announcement for the title rather than assuming every Free Weekend uses the same rule.
Will I lose my save if I uninstall the game?
You might, particularly when the game stores progress only locally or its uninstall process removes associated data. Verify the publisher’s save location and make a backup before uninstalling. Steam Cloud also is not proof that the specific save was uploaded.
Does the Steam Cloud logo guarantee that my progress will carry over?
No. It shows that the game has Cloud integration, but developers decide which files are uploaded. Confirm that the relevant save is covered and that the last synchronization completed.
What if Steam says the save cannot synchronize?
Keep the original computer and its save intact, stay online, and retry synchronization. Do not launch while ignoring the warning if the latest progress matters. If Steam presents competing versions, preserve a local copy and select the version containing the newest progress.
Can Steam Support restore a missing Free Weekend save?
Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. Contact the game’s developer for help locating local files and determining which files the title integrates with Cloud.
Does the Dinkum policy apply to every Free Weekend?
No. The March 30, 2025 Dinkum announcement is a dated, title-specific example: it required purchase to continue and tied carry-over to the save data remaining available. Other publishers can set different terms.
Best Value
Bottom line for Steam Free Weekend saves
Check four independent facts: whether the event requires a purchase to continue, where the game stores saves, whether the specific progress files are included in Steam Cloud, and whether the final synchronization completed without errors. Only the game’s current publisher guidance can answer the first three for a particular title. Steam’s Cloud indicator and settings are useful checks, but they are not a guarantee; preserving a local-only save and resolving sync problems before the event ends are what protect progress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy the game to keep playing after the Free Weekend?
Check the current event announcement. Some events require a purchase when free access ends; retaining a save does not extend the free license.
Will uninstalling erase my Free Weekend save?
It can, especially if the game stores saves locally. Follow the publisher’s backup instructions and preserve the save before uninstalling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a Steam Cloud logo guarantee carry-over?
No. Developers choose which files Cloud uploads, so verify that the relevant save is included and that synchronization completed.
What should I do after a sync error?
Keep the original device and save intact, stay online, retry synchronization, and do not launch while ignoring the warning. Contact the developer if the conflict remains.
Can Steam Support recover a missing save?
Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. The developer can help identify local saves and Cloud coverage.
The Bottom Line
Free Weekend access and save retention are separate. Verify the current event’s purchase rule, the game’s save location and Cloud coverage, then complete synchronization before the event ends. Back up local-only saves and resolve every sync warning before uninstalling or switching devices.
