The safest test is independent verification. Do not use a link, phone number, payment instruction or contact detail supplied by an unexpected social-media message. Instead, find the brand’s established website or contact information yourself and ask through that known-good route whether the account, message or offer is genuine.
A familiar logo, convincing username, blue check, polished writing or urgent account warning is only a claim of identity. Impersonators copy business names to make people click, pay or disclose personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says consumers reported nearly $3 billion in losses to impersonators during 2024; that figure covers impersonation broadly, not social-media brand scams alone.

What actually proves that a brand account is genuine?
Almost nothing visible inside an unexpected message proves identity by itself. Scammers can copy logos, profile photos, brand language and promotional graphics. They can create handles that differ from the real account by one character, buy advertisements that appear beside legitimate content, or use a compromised account that once belonged to a real person or business.
Think of an account or message as an unverified claim until you confirm it through a channel you found independently. A verification badge may be useful context, but current FTC guidance does not establish that a badge guarantees authenticity on every platform. Badge meaning, eligibility and enforcement vary by service and can change. Do not let a badge replace independent checking.

The strongest evidence is a two-way confirmation: you locate the brand’s established website or published contact route without using the suspicious message, then the brand confirms that the account, offer or request is theirs. If you cannot obtain that confirmation, do not send money or personal information.
The safest verification workflow
Use this sequence for direct messages, comments, posts, advertisements, texts, emails and calls that appear to represent a familiar company.
- Pause. Stop before clicking, calling, replying, paying or sharing information. Urgency is often part of the pressure: an alleged account problem, prize, expiring discount or threat of closure.
- Classify the requested action. Treat requests for passwords, one-time codes, identity documents, card details, bank information, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or payment-app transfers as high risk. A request to move the conversation to another service also deserves scrutiny.
- Do not use the message’s link or phone number. The FTC advises that an unexpected message can lead to a fake website or a scammer on the phone even when the message looks like it comes from a business you know.
- Find the brand independently. Type the company’s web address yourself, use a bookmark you already trust, or locate the company through a reliable directory or a previous statement. Navigate to its contact or support page. Do not copy contact details from the suspicious post.
- Ask through the known-good route. Provide the account handle, message wording, advertisement and offer details. Ask whether the brand sent them and whether the requested action is part of a current campaign or support process. Wait for an answer before acting.
- For an advertisement, identify the seller. The brand shown in an ad may not be the business that will take your payment. Open the seller’s independently found website, check its name and contact details, and look for a consistent business identity.
- Compare the price elsewhere. Search for the same product through other established sellers. A dramatic discount on a well-known brand is a warning sign, especially when the offer exists only in one social ad or disappears when you try to verify it.
- Choose a payment method with recourse. If you decide to buy, the FTC says a credit card can provide a way to dispute a charge when goods do not arrive or are materially different from what was advertised. Do not proceed with a seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or a payment app when those methods remove practical dispute options.
- Save evidence. Keep screenshots, the account handle, profile URL, ad copy, receipts, transaction records and dates. Do not continue chatting just to gather more proof; preserve what you already have.
- Report and disengage. Report suspected impersonation to the social platform and to the FTC. Block the account after preserving evidence. If your own account appears to have been taken over, use the platform’s official account-recovery process instead of links sent by a supposed helper.
Warning signs that deserve a hard stop
An unexpected account warning
A message may claim that your account violated a rule, will be closed, needs verification or has an unusual login. The proposed fix is often a link to “appeal,” a request for a security code or a phone number to call. Do not follow that route. Open the platform or brand service through an independently located app or website and check for notices there. If nothing appears in the official account, treat the message as untrusted.

A prize, refund or exclusive offer
Impersonators use familiar businesses to make prizes and refunds sound credible. They may ask for a small delivery fee, tax, processing payment or card number before releasing the supposed benefit. A genuine promotion should be verifiable through the brand’s independently found website or established customer-service channel. Never pay to claim an unexpected prize until the brand confirms the promotion through that route.

A supplied phone number or link
Caller ID and message headers are not independent proof. The FTC notes that scammers can fake caller ID and create official-looking identities. A phone number displayed in a post, direct message or pop-up can connect you to the impersonator. Find the number yourself from the company’s established website, an account statement or another source you already know is genuine.
Pressure to act immediately
Legitimate businesses may have deadlines, but urgency does not authenticate a sender. “Act now,” countdowns, threats of suspension and instructions not to tell anyone are reasons to slow down. A real company should remain identifiable when you contact it independently; a scam depends on preventing that pause.
Requests for secrets or unusual payment
A brand’s support team should not need your password or a one-time authentication code. Be especially cautious when a supposed representative asks you to read back a code, install software, share a full card number in chat or pay with a gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or an irreversible payment-app transfer.
How to check a social-media advertisement before buying
Ads can look more polished than ordinary scam posts because they use familiar branding and paid placement. Placement is not endorsement. Follow the seller, price and payment checks below.

| Question | What to verify | Safe response when it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Who is selling? | Find the seller’s legal or trading name, independently located website and contact details. Confirm that the seller, not merely the advertised brand, will process your order. | Leave the ad and do not enter payment details. |
| Does the offer make sense? | Compare the same product’s price with several established sellers. A very low price on a well-known brand can signal a fake storefront, counterfeit goods or no shipment. | Assume the discount is unsafe until independently explained and confirmed. |
| Where does the click lead? | Check the destination only after deciding it is safe to investigate, and do not sign in or pay from an unexpected ad. Find the brand’s normal shopping route yourself instead. | Close the page and navigate independently. |
| How must you pay? | Prefer a method that gives you a realistic dispute process. The FTC specifically identifies credit-card disputes as a possible remedy when an order does not arrive or is not as described. | Reject sellers demanding gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps. |
| Can the brand confirm it? | Ask the brand through contact details you found independently whether the ad and seller are authorized. | Do not buy while the offer remains unconfirmed. |
A fake site may copy product photographs, return policies and customer-service language. Those details are not proof because they can be copied at low cost. The seller’s independently verifiable identity and a payment method with recourse matter more than visual polish.
How to evaluate a direct message, comment or email
Read the message as a sequence of requested actions rather than as a story. First identify what it wants you to do: click, call, pay, provide information or move to another channel. Then ask whether you initiated the conversation. An unexpected request deserves independent verification even when it uses your name, references a real order or includes accurate public details.
Do not reply with information that helps the sender complete the impersonation. A response can confirm that your account is active and invite further pressure. If you need to ask the brand about it, send a new message through the brand’s established support channel rather than replying to the suspicious thread.
When a message claims to be from a marketplace, delivery company, bank or other service, open the service through its official app or a web address you enter yourself. Look for the order, alert or case there. A real issue that exists only inside the unexpected message has not been independently established.

Why logos, usernames and caller ID are weak evidence
Identity signals are easy to reproduce. A scammer can select a similar handle, copy a profile image, duplicate a brand’s color scheme and write in a professional tone. Caller ID can also be spoofed, so the name shown on your phone does not prove who called.
Even a genuine account can be compromised. The FTC’s recovery guidance lists messages sent from an account that the owner did not send as one possible sign of hacking. That means a real-looking profile can still be an unsafe source at a particular moment. Independent confirmation protects you from both deliberate impersonation and a hacked account.
Payment decisions and what to do if you already paid
Verification should happen before payment, but mistakes are recoverable when you act quickly. Contact the card issuer, bank or payment service through contact information you locate independently and explain that the transaction may involve impersonation or non-delivery. Ask what dispute, cancellation or fraud process applies. Keep the receipt, transaction ID, screenshots and correspondence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not send another payment to “unlock” a refund, release a shipment or close a case. Follow-up demands often target people who have already disclosed that they are willing to pay. The same warning applies to anyone promising recovery of lost funds in exchange for an upfront fee.
Best Value
Reporting an impersonator
Report the account, advertisement or message to the platform where you encountered it. Use the FTC’s reporting channel for suspected scams as well. Include the account name, links or identifiers, screenshots, dates, payment details and a concise description of what the sender requested.
Reporting does not itself prove that a platform will remove an account or recover money, and it is not a substitute for contacting your payment provider. Its value is documenting the conduct and giving both the platform and regulators information about the scheme.
If your own social account may be hacked
Impersonation of a brand and takeover of your personal account are different problems. If messages were sent from your account that you did not write, your password changed unexpectedly, recovery details were altered or unfamiliar sessions appear, stop using links in messages and go directly to the platform’s official recovery instructions.
Change the password through the legitimate account settings or recovery page, review active sessions and recovery contacts, and enable the platform’s available multi-factor protection. Warn contacts through a separate channel if they may have received fraudulent messages. The FTC recommends following the provider’s account-recovery instructions for a potentially hacked social account.
Common mistakes that make verification fail
- Searching only the suspicious username. Search results can include copied profiles and ads. Use the brand’s independently found website or established contact route as the anchor.
- Calling the number in the message to “check.” That connects you to the very person whose identity is in doubt.
- Assuming a small first payment is safe. A low-cost “verification fee” can be the beginning of repeated charges or a request for more sensitive information.
- Relying on appearance. A professional design, verified-looking badge or correct logo can be copied or appear on a compromised account.
- Continuing after the seller avoids basic questions. Evasive answers about ownership, returns, location or payment protection are a reason to leave, not a reason to negotiate.
- Using irreversible payment because the discount is time-limited. A deadline is not worth surrendering practical dispute rights.
- Reporting without securing your account. If your own account is compromised, start recovery immediately; reporting the impersonator alone will not restore your access.
A quick decision rule
Use the following rule when you need an answer quickly:
- Unexpected contact plus a requested action: stop and verify independently.
- Link or phone number supplied by the contact: do not use it.
- Advertisement with an unusually low price: identify the seller and compare prices before considering a purchase.
- Payment request with no practical dispute route: do not pay.
- No independent confirmation: treat the account, message or offer as unverified and disengage.
- Evidence your own account was taken over: use the platform’s official recovery instructions and notify contacts safely.
The FTC’s plain-language advice captures the core test: “If you’re not sure if a call or message is real, reach out to the business, organization, or person using contact information you looked up yourself and know to be true.” That independent contact is more reliable than any logo, badge, caller-ID label or urgent explanation inside the original message.
