For a Welsh beach or designated bathing site, use the Natural Resources Wales (NRW) bathing-water explorer, open the exact site profile, and check its classification, current warnings, pollution-risk forecast and storm-overflow alerts. Then assess recent rain and the physical conditions—flow, depth, currents, weather, obstacles and safe entry and exit. Most Welsh rivers and lakes are not designated bathing waters, so a general river-status result or the absence of a reported incident cannot prove that a particular stretch is suitable for swimming.
What to check before entering Welsh water
Water quality and drowning hazards are separate questions. A site can have a good long-term bacterial classification and still be dangerous because of a fast current, a rising river, a hidden obstruction, cold-water shock or a temporary pollution warning. Conversely, water that looks clear can contain bacteria, viruses or other contaminants that cannot be seen.

Use this order:
- Identify the exact location and whether it is a designated bathing water.
- Read the site profile and its long-term classification.
- Look for a current warning, advice notice, closure or daily pollution-risk forecast.
- Check storm-overflow information and local signs.
- Consider recent rainfall and runoff.
- Assess weather, tide, flow, depth, currents, underwater hazards and your route in and out.
- Take health precautions before, during and after the swim.
1. Find the exact site in the NRW bathing-water explorer
Start with the Natural Resources Wales bathing-water explorer. Search for the named beach or bathing place, then open that location’s own profile. Do not rely on a nearby beach, a broad coastal map, a general river dashboard or a result for another stretch of the same river.
An NRW profile can describe the beach and surrounding area, streams and rivers entering the site, and pollution-management arrangements. Those details help explain where contamination might arrive and why conditions can differ from a site only a short distance away.

Designated status changes what information exists
In 2026, Wales has 114 designated bathing waters. Each is scheduled for at least eight tests between 1 May and 30 September. Designation means the site is included in the bathing-water monitoring and classification system; it does not mean the water is tested continuously or that every hazard has been assessed.
Most Welsh rivers, lakes and other inland waters are not designated. A popular wild-swimming location may therefore have no routine bathing-water profile, no daily pollution forecast and no current bacterial result. Treat that absence as a limitation of the information, not as evidence that the water is safe.
2. Interpret the classification correctly
NRW classifications summarise bacterial-indicator samples collected over multiple seasons. They are useful for comparing a site’s longer-term bathing-water performance, but they are not a real-time measurement of the water in front of you and do not cover every possible hazard.

| What the classification tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|
| How sampled bacterial indicators performed over the seasons included in the classification. | Whether the water is safe at this moment. |
| A long-term context for a designated bathing water. | Whether a fresh spill, runoff event, debris or a dangerous current is present today. |
| How the site compares within the classification system. | Whether an undesignated river or lake is suitable for swimming. |
NRW reported that 110 of 112 designated bathing waters met the required standards in 2025: 78 were rated Excellent, 26 Good and six Sufficient; two were Poor. The 2025 denominator and the 2026 total of 114 designated waters are different dated figures, so do not turn the 2025 result into a claim about all 114 sites or about conditions on a particular day.
3. Check current warnings, forecasts and closures
Daily pollution-risk forecasts
During the bathing season, NRW publishes daily pollution-risk forecasts for covered sites. A forecast predicts the likelihood of pollution-related risk; it is not confirmation that a sewage spill or pollution incident has occurred.
NRW’s 30 July 2025 information described forecast models at 16 designated sites. Swansea Bay used a separate model provided by the local council. Coverage can change, so check the current profile rather than assuming every designated beach has a forecast.

If the forecast indicates elevated risk, postpone the swim or choose another site. If there is no forecast, that means only that a forecast is not available for that location—not that risk is absent.

NRW says Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy provide near-real-time alerts when storm overflows spill at designated bathing waters. Check the relevant water-company information alongside the NRW profile. A spill alert is a reason to stay out and follow any associated advice; it is not something to dismiss because the water looks clean.
Local authority signs and temporary notices
At the site, read signs before approaching the water. Obey temporary closure notices, pollution warnings, red flags, notices around river structures and any instruction from lifeguards or local authorities. A sign can reflect a local event or hazard that has not yet appeared in a general online summary.
4. Account for rain and runoff
Heavy or prolonged rain can wash contaminants from roads, fields, drains and urban surfaces into rivers and the sea. It can also trigger storm overflows. A river may rise and accelerate quickly, while a beach may receive runoff from streams that drain inland catchments.
There is no universal official waiting period after rain in the guidance considered here. Do not apply a made-up number of hours to every Welsh site. Instead, check the exact location’s current forecast, overflow alerts and signs, consider how much rain has fallen and when, and be more conservative when water is visibly discoloured, carrying debris or flowing unusually fast.

5. Understand the special limits of river and lake checks
Searches such as “How do I check river water quality in Wales?” often lead to environmental monitoring data. That information can be valuable, but its purpose may be different from bathing-water protection.
NRW and Public Health Wales explain that only some coastal sites and a small number of river sites are designated and monitored during the bathing season. Most inland water is not. Routine monitoring may measure the river’s ecological condition under environmental regulations rather than whether it is suitable for people to swim in.
The Welsh Government’s 2 September 2026 statement on the River Tawe makes this distinction explicit: “Routine monitoring on the River Tawe is undertaken primarily to assess the environmental condition of the river under the Water Framework Directive Regulations, rather than bathing water quality.” A result from that type of programme cannot certify a swimming spot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to make a decision at an unlisted inland spot
- Look for a local authority closure, landowner notice, pollution incident or warning.
- Check recent rainfall, river-level trends and visible runoff.
- Inspect the water for unusual colour, foam, scum, sewage debris, dead animals or an unpleasant smell. These are warning signs, not a test that clear water is safe.
- Assume there may be no current bacterial evidence and make a conservative decision.
- Assess the river as a physical hazard: flow speed, eddies, strainers, weirs, sluices, waterfalls, rapids, unstable banks and exit points.
6. Assess physical safety separately from water quality
Before swimming, check the weather, tide where relevant, water level, depth, current and wind. Conditions can change while you are in the water. In unfamiliar water, enter slowly; never jump or dive until you know the depth and what lies below.
Rivers and inland water
- Fast flow can overpower a strong swimmer, especially near bends, narrow channels, waterfalls and rapids.
- Weirs and sluices can create recirculating currents and difficult-to-escape hydraulics. Stay away from warning signs and man-made structures.
- Look for submerged branches, rocks, fencing, shopping trolleys, fishing line and other hidden objects.
- Check that the bank is stable and that you can leave the water without climbing a slippery or collapsing edge.
- Do not assume shallow-looking water is safe to cross or swim; uneven beds can create sudden drops and strong flow.
Beaches and tidal water
- Check tide times, rip-current advice, wind and swell, not just the air temperature.
- Identify a safe route back to shore before entering and keep landmarks in view.
- Watch for rocks, groynes, cliffs, channels, fishing equipment and rapidly changing depth.
- Follow lifeguard zones, flags and beach closures. If no lifeguard is present, do not treat the absence of a warning as an assurance.
Cold water and personal limits
Even in summer, Welsh water can be extremely cold. Sudden immersion can cause involuntary gasping and hyperventilation, increasing the risk of drowning. Prolonged exposure can lead to hypothermia. Know your swimming ability, avoid swimming alone where possible, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return, and have a way to raise an alarm.
A flotation device can add visibility and support for an appropriate open-water swim, but it does not make a polluted, fast-flowing or otherwise unsuitable site safe. A brightly coloured open-water swimming tow float is an optional visibility aid; it does not measure water quality or prevent infection.

- Cover cuts and grazes with waterproof dressings.
- Wash your hands before eating or drinking.
- Shower as soon as possible after swimming.
- Do not enter if you have recently had diarrhoea or vomiting.
- If the water looks or smells bad, generally stay out.
Seek medical advice if you develop diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps or fever after swimming. Tell the clinician that you had contact with natural water, particularly if symptoms are severe, persistent or affect a child or vulnerable adult.
8. A practical decision framework for comparing sites
When two locations are available, compare the whole risk picture rather than choosing solely by the classification.
| Question | Prefer the site with | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is it designated? | A designated bathing water with an identifiable NRW profile, where one is available. | You have access to a defined monitoring and information framework. |
| What is the classification? | A stronger long-term classification, interpreted with its season and date. | It provides historical bacterial context, not a same-day guarantee. |
| Is there a current warning? | No closure, pollution advice, elevated forecast or storm-overflow alert. | Current information can override a favourable historical classification. |
| What happened recently? | Less recent heavy rain and less visible runoff, all else equal. | Rain can carry contamination and change flows quickly. |
| Are the physical conditions manageable? | Known depth, gentle flow, clear entry and exit, and no nearby structures or hidden hazards. | Water-quality information does not prevent drowning. |
| Is help available? | A location with appropriate lifeguard or local safety support, when applicable. | Support can improve the response to an emergency but does not remove the need for personal assessment. |
9. Use a before, during and after checklist
Before leaving
- Save the exact NRW site profile if the location is designated.
- Check the latest classification, warning, forecast and overflow information.
- Review weather, tide, river level, wind and recent rainfall.
- Tell another person your location and expected return time.
- Pack waterproof dressings, warm clothes, a phone in a protective case and any appropriate flotation or visibility aid.
At the water
- Read every sign and look for temporary notices.
- Walk the entry and exit route before getting in.
- Do not enter if the water looks or smells abnormal, the flow is beyond your ability, or you cannot identify a safe exit.
- Enter slowly to reduce cold-water shock and never dive into unfamiliar water.
- Stay with your group or within a distance that allows you to help or raise an alarm.
- Leave if weather, tide, current, water level or your physical condition worsens.
After swimming
- Shower as soon as possible and wash hands before eating.
- Clean and re-cover cuts.
- Change out of wet clothing and warm up.
- Monitor for gastrointestinal or fever symptoms and seek medical advice if they develop.
Common questions about swimming in Wales
Is this river safe to swim in?
You cannot answer that from a general river-quality result alone. First establish whether the exact stretch is a designated bathing water. If it is not, check local warnings and recent rain, then make a conservative assessment of contamination risk and physical hazards. The lack of a warning is not proof of safety.
Is this beach safe for swimming today?
Open the exact beach’s NRW profile and check the current warning, daily pollution-risk forecast where available, storm-overflow information and local signs. Then check tides, currents, weather, depth and the route out. A long-term Excellent classification does not cancel a same-day closure or dangerous surf.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I swim after heavy rain?
Heavy rain can increase runoff, trigger storm overflows and make rivers rise or accelerate. Wales has no single official wait time that applies to every site. Check current site information and local notices, and postpone if there is an alert, visible pollution, unusually high flow or uncertainty about the conditions.

Are sewage overflows affecting this beach?
For designated bathing waters, check the relevant NRW information and the near-real-time overflow alerts provided by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water or Hafren Dyfrdwy. Follow any warning or closure. An alert indicates a spill event; a lack of an alert is not a guarantee that every contaminant is absent.
Does clear water mean it is safe?
No. Harmful microorganisms may be invisible. Visual checks are useful for spotting warning signs such as bad smells, scum, unusual discolouration or debris, but clear water cannot certify bathing safety.
What should I do if I become ill after swimming?
Contact a medical professional for diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps or fever, and mention the natural-water exposure. Avoid swimming while unwell, especially after diarrhoea or vomiting.

Official figures and tools are time-specific. The 2025 classifications, the 2025 forecast-coverage description and the 2026 designated-site count describe particular reporting periods, not a permanent status. Recheck the NRW service immediately before a swim and before relying on a site-specific claim.
The safest decision combines current official information with an honest assessment of your ability and the conditions in front of you. If either the water-quality information or the physical situation is uncertain, choose not to enter.
