Sign in or enter the service address, account number, or affected phone number when prompted. Confirm that the notice covers your service type and location, read the latest update, and enable incident notifications if the provider offers them.
If the provider reports no outage, that result does not prove your connection is working. Follow the provider’s troubleshooting steps, then contact support if service remains unavailable. The FCC National Broadband Map can show which providers report service at an address, but it is not a live outage checker.

Start with the provider that serves the affected connection
Identify the company responsible for the service before checking a status page. Your home broadband provider may be different from your mobile carrier, and a fixed-line outage page will not necessarily report a cellular-data incident.
- Check a recent bill, account email, or the app you use to manage the connection.
- For home internet, note the provider named on the broadband bill rather than the manufacturer of the modem or Wi-Fi router.
- For cellular data, use the mobile carrier’s official status tool and the phone number or account associated with the affected line.
- If you use a reseller, landlord-provided connection, or community network, ask the organization that bills or administers the service which upstream provider handles incidents.
Third-party outage maps and social-media reports can reveal that other customers are seeing problems, but they do not establish that your provider has acknowledged an incident. Treat them as leads and confirm the result through the official provider channel.

Use the official outage checker or app
Open the provider’s status page from its normal website or app. Avoid links in unsolicited messages; type the provider’s known web address or use the app you already installed. Providers use different combinations of address, account, and telephone-number checks, so follow the fields shown for your service.
- Open the outage tool. Look for labels such as “Check outages,” “Service status,” or “Network status” in the provider’s support area.
- Identify the service. Select internet, broadband, wireless, or the specific product that is failing. Do not assume a television or phone-status notice covers internet service.
- Verify the connection. Enter or confirm the service address, account identifier, or affected mobile number when requested. An address-level check is more useful than a notice covering only a large region.
- Read the incident details. Note the reported geography, affected products, the time of the latest update, and any restoration estimate.
- Save the incident reference. A ticket or outage number helps support staff find the same event if you need to call later.
A restoration estimate is the provider’s current planning information, not a guarantee. Severe weather, damaged infrastructure, access restrictions, and changing fault conditions can move the estimate.
What a useful outage result contains
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Provider and product | Confirms that the notice concerns the company and service you actually use. |
| Address, account, or phone match | Shows whether the specific connection is included rather than merely a nearby area. |
| Incident start or update time | Indicates how current the information is. |
| Affected services | Separates internet failures from television, voice, or mobile-network problems. |
| Next update or restoration estimate | Provides planning information while making clear that timing can change. |
| Notification option | Lets you receive changes without repeatedly refreshing the page. |
Turn on incident notifications when available
Some providers let customers subscribe to updates for a specific incident. AT&T’s outage guidance says customers can sign in to its outage page and select text updates for the current outage. The same guidance explains that these messages relate to that outage, not to future outages. Availability, message type, and sign-in requirements vary by provider.

If the checker says there is no outage
A “no outage” result means the provider has not listed an incident for the details you supplied. It does not repair the line, rule out a localized fault, or prove that your equipment is healthy. Work through the provider’s troubleshooting path in the order given.
Check the scope of the failure
- See whether every device is offline or only one computer, phone, or television.
- Test a second device, preferably over Ethernet if your setup supports it, to distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a broader connection problem.
- Look at the gateway or modem indicators and record unusual colors or error messages before changing anything.
- Check whether internet access fails while provider voice or television service continues, or whether all bundled services are affected.
- Note when the problem began and whether it follows a move between rooms, networks, or cellular and Wi-Fi connections.
Restart the provider equipment as instructed
Follow the instructions for your own provider and hardware. As an example, AT&T’s published sequence for customers who are not in an outage area is to unplug gateway power, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it, and allow up to five minutes for the restart. Restarting can interrupt internet-dependent phone or television service, so warn anyone using those services first.

- Save work and stop activities that require a continuous connection.
- Unplug the gateway or modem’s power as the provider directs. Do not press a factory-reset button unless support specifically tells you to.
- Wait the stated interval; the 20-second interval in AT&T’s example is not a universal requirement for every device.
- Reconnect power and allow the full restart period. Avoid repeated unplugging while the equipment is initializing.
- Test the connection on more than one device and record the result.
A restart cannot repair a provider-side cut, a damaged cable, or a network incident. If the same failure returns, continue to support rather than repeatedly power-cycling the equipment.
Contact support when service remains unavailable
Use the provider’s official secure support channel when the status page shows no outage, the listed incident does not match your address, or troubleshooting fails. Have the following information ready:
- Service address or account identifier, supplied only through the provider’s authenticated channel.
- The date and approximate time the failure began.
- Which services and devices are affected.
- Whether the provider’s checker reported an outage, no outage, or an error.
- Gateway or modem indicator lights and any on-screen error message.
- Steps already completed, including the time of a restart.
- An incident or ticket number from an earlier contact.
Ask whether the issue is known but not yet posted, whether a technician visit is required, and how you will receive updates. Do not claim that a nearby availability map proves your line is working; support must test or inspect the actual service.
Protect your account while seeking help
- Use the provider’s app, account portal, or telephone number printed on a bill.
- Never disclose a one-time verification code to an unsolicited caller or message sender.
- Do not install remote-access software at the request of an unverified “support” contact.
- Record case numbers and promised follow-up times.
Read the status message in context
A status page can describe a broad area even when the fault affects only part of it, or it can show a service-specific incident rather than a complete loss of connectivity. Match the notice to your address, account, product, and the time the problem began. If the notice names internet service but your television or voice service is also down, tell support; bundled products may have different incident records.
Save a screenshot or note the wording and update time before the message changes. This record helps explain why you contacted support and lets you compare later updates without relying on memory. If the page returns an error, use another official provider channel, such as the authenticated app or the support number on your bill, and report that the status tool itself was unavailable.
What the FCC National Broadband Map can and cannot tell you
The FCC National Broadband Map is useful for a different question: which providers report that they can serve a location, what technology they report, and what maximum advertised download and upload speeds they report there. The FCC’s Broadband Data Collection Help Center, updated May 15, 2025, states that the map shows internet availability, not network performance, affordability, or adoption.

| Question | Best source | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| Is my provider reporting a current interruption? | Provider outage page or app | Incident information for the provider and service, sometimes matched to an address or account. |
| Which providers report service at this address? | FCC National Broadband Map | Provider-reported availability, technology, and advertised maximum speeds. |
| Is the connection performing at the speed advertised? | Provider troubleshooting and a documented complaint if needed | The map itself does not measure live performance. |
| Can I report that a provider’s availability claim is wrong? | FCC availability-challenge process | A review of reported availability at a location, not a live outage ticket. |
| Can I complain about availability, speed, billing, or equipment? | FCC Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center | A regulatory complaint path, not an incident-status feed. |
The map’s availability definition includes a routine-installation criterion of service being installable within 10 business days. That criterion is used in the map process; it is not a current repair-time promise and not an outage statistic.
Why a map result cannot confirm that your internet works
A provider can report that service is available at an address while a line is temporarily down, congested, damaged, or awaiting repair. Conversely, a provider may fail to list a short, localized incident in a broad public notice. Use the map for service-availability questions and the provider’s operational tools for live incidents.
How to compare conflicting status reports
When the provider page, an app, and third-party reports disagree, evaluate each source against the same criteria:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Provider and service match: Does the source cover the company and product supplying the affected connection?
- Address or account specificity: Does it check your connection, or only display a broad regional count?
- Update recency: Is there an incident timestamp or a recently refreshed status?
- Follow-up capability: Can you receive updates or report a problem that is not listed?
There is no universal accuracy ranking established for provider tools, crowdsourced reports, and third-party maps. A cluster of customer reports can justify contacting support, but wait for the provider to confirm the incident before treating it as acknowledged.
Keep a short outage record
For a brief interruption, a start time and the provider’s ticket number may be enough. For a problem that persists, keep a simple timeline: when service failed, which devices or bundled services were affected, each status-page update, restart times, support contacts, and any promised follow-up. Note whether a wired test and a second device behaved differently. This information prevents repeated troubleshooting and gives a technician or complaint reviewer a clearer account of the failure.
Share only the details needed through the provider’s secure channel. A service address or account identifier may be necessary for diagnosis, but it should not be posted publicly with screenshots or social-media reports.

Mobile data, home broadband, and shared connections
Cellular data
Check the mobile carrier associated with the affected phone number. Test whether calls, text messages, and data fail in the same place, and whether another location restores service. A fixed broadband provider’s outage page may not include a mobile-network fault.
Home broadband
Check the fixed provider using the service address on the bill. If only Wi-Fi devices fail but a wired device works, follow the provider’s Wi-Fi guidance rather than reporting a regional outage immediately.
Apartment, office, or community networks
Ask the building manager, employer, campus help desk, or network administrator who owns the service relationship. The public provider page may not identify an internal wiring or shared-equipment failure.
Regional and country limits
The FCC tools and complaint routes described here apply to U.S. services. The general first step—use the official status source for the provider serving the connection—also works elsewhere, but providers and regulators in other countries use different portals, terminology, and escalation rules. Do not assume that an FCC map result, FCC complaint, or U.S. provider procedure applies to a service outside the United States.
Escalating an unresolved U.S. complaint
If the provider does not resolve a continuing U.S. service problem, the FCC Consumer Inquiries and Complaints Center accepts complaints about internet availability, speed, billing, and equipment. Submit the issue with your provider case number, dates, affected services, and relevant records. The FCC complaint center is an escalation route; it does not provide live outage status or dispatch a repair crew for an incident.

Best Value
A quick decision path
- Identify the provider and service type. Use the bill, account, or mobile number.
- Check the official outage page or app. Match the address or account and read the latest update.
- If an outage is listed, subscribe to incident updates and follow the provider’s instructions. Do not repeatedly reset equipment.
- If no outage is listed, test multiple devices, inspect indicators, and perform the provider’s prescribed restart.
- If service is still down, contact official support with the start time, affected services, troubleshooting results, and any ticket number.
- If a U.S. provider dispute remains unresolved, consider the appropriate FCC complaint or availability-challenge process.
Common mistakes that slow diagnosis
- Checking a general internet map instead of the provider that serves the address.
- Confusing advertised availability with current network operation.
- Assuming a “no outage” page means the customer’s equipment or line is definitely healthy.
- Restarting or factory-resetting equipment before recording lights and error messages.
- Using a mobile status page to diagnose a fixed broadband connection, or vice versa.
- Trusting an unverified caller who asks for account credentials or remote access.
- Interpreting a restoration estimate as a guaranteed deadline.
- Continuing to refresh a stale page without checking its update time or incident scope.
- Posting an account number, address, or verification code while asking strangers for help.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether an outage affects my exact address?
Use the official outage page or app for the provider that bills you. Enter or confirm the service address, account identifier, or affected mobile number, then check that the incident names your service type and shows a current update.
What if the provider says there is no outage but my internet is still down?
A no-outage result does not prove the line or equipment is healthy. Test another device, check gateway or modem indicators, follow the provider’s troubleshooting sequence, and perform its prescribed restart. Contact official support if service remains unavailable.
Is the FCC National Broadband Map a live outage map?
No. The FCC says the map shows reported availability, technology, and maximum advertised speeds, not network performance or current operating status. Use the provider’s outage tool for a live incident.
Can a third-party outage map confirm that my provider has an outage?
It can show that other customers report problems, but there is no established universal accuracy ranking for third-party tools. Treat those reports as leads and ask the provider to confirm the incident.
Should I restart my modem during a reported outage?
Follow the provider’s instructions. If an outage is already listed, follow its incident guidance rather than repeatedly power-cycling equipment. If no outage is listed, AT&T’s example is to unplug gateway power for 20 seconds, reconnect it, and allow up to five minutes; other equipment may differ.
What information should I give internet support?
Provide the service address or account identifier through the secure provider channel, when requested, plus the failure start time, affected services and devices, status-page result, indicator lights or error messages, troubleshooting steps, and any existing ticket number.
What is the difference between an FCC availability challenge and a complaint?
An availability challenge addresses whether a provider-reported service is available at a location. The FCC says a report that actual speed is lower than advertised is handled as a consumer complaint; complaints can also cover availability, billing, and equipment.
Recommended Free Tools
Does an outage restoration estimate guarantee when service will return?
No. It is the provider’s current planning information. Weather, infrastructure damage, access restrictions, and changing fault conditions can alter the estimate.
The Bottom Line
Check the official status tool for the provider and service that actually serve you, using your address or account whenever possible. Treat the FCC National Broadband Map as an availability reference, not a live outage monitor; if the provider shows no incident and troubleshooting does not restore service, contact support and escalate unresolved U.S. complaints through the FCC’s complaint center.
