On a PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and write down the exact system-software version. That number is only the starting point: jailbreak eligibility depends on the specific exploit method, firmware range, console configuration and sometimes required media. Verify those details in the method’s current documentation before changing anything, and review the PlayStation terms and warranty that apply in your country.
1. Find and record the installed PS5 system-software version
Use the console’s own information screen rather than a web account, a box label or a remembered update number. Sony’s US support instructions place the version here:

- Turn on the PS5 and sign in if the console requests it.
- Open Settings from the home screen.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open Console Information.
- Copy the complete system-software version exactly as displayed, including every digit and decimal point.
The same screen can show Up to date when Sony considers the installation current. That status describes Sony’s update state; it does not indicate whether a community exploit exists for the console.
Make a contemporaneous record
Before researching an exploit, write the version in a note and photograph the screen if you need an audit trail. Record the date you checked it and the console configuration you intend to use. Do not rely on a shortened label such as “version 8” when the method documentation distinguishes minor releases. A one-digit difference can place a console outside a method’s stated range.

2. Why the number cannot answer “Can my PS5 be jailbroken?” by itself
A firmware number is not a universal jailbreak test. Every exploit chain has its own assumptions: a vulnerability may work only in a particular range, require a certain entry point, depend on a disc or other media, or be limited to particular console configurations. A claim that one method works on a version does not transfer automatically to another method.
Compatibility also changes as projects are updated and as Sony releases new system software. A page that was accurate for an earlier release can become stale without the number on your console changing. Treat a version as an input to a method-specific check, not as a verdict.
3. Identify the exact method before checking compatibility
Write down the named project or exploit chain you are considering. “PS5 jailbreak” is too broad to produce a meaningful compatibility result. Then read that project’s current release notes, documentation and issue information for all of the following:
- the precise firmware range, including whether endpoints are included;
- the exploit or entry-point sequence the project expects;
- supported console models or other configuration limits;
- any disc, USB or other media requirement;
- the date of the documentation and the release to which it refers;
- known restrictions, unresolved bugs and recovery requirements.
Compare your recorded version character-for-character with the project’s statement. If the documentation says “up to” a version, do not assume that a later minor release is covered. If it names a model or media dependency and your configuration is not explicitly included, mark the result as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with a forum comment or video title.
4. What the currently cited evidence does—and does not—show
The etaHEN repository is a primary project source, but the available project material does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every firmware, exploit chain, PS5 model and media combination. Its existence or a release announcement therefore cannot establish that an individual console is eligible.

Tom’s Hardware reported on September 30, 2026 that the Relapse jailbreak supported PS5 firmware 7.00 through 13.60 at that time. That is a dated report about Relapse specifically, not a general PS5 rule. The report also described firmware requirements as changing quickly. A reader checking the console on another date must verify whether Relapse’s documentation still states that range and whether the console’s other requirements match.

Because no authoritative, method-by-method table is established here, an “eligible” label should be reserved for a clear match in current documentation. A missing entry is not evidence that the console is unsupported; it is evidence that the status has not been confirmed.

Complete this checklist without changing the console first:
- Version: the complete number copied from Console Information.
- Method: the exact project and release, not a generic jailbreak name.
- Firmware match: the project explicitly includes your exact number and states whether the range is inclusive.
- Model/configuration: every model or hardware condition named by the documentation matches your console.
- Media: any disc, USB or other required medium is identified by the project and is available in the form it specifies.
- Documentation date: you know when the compatibility statement was published or last updated.
- Legal terms: you have read the PlayStation software agreement and warranty for your region.
- Operational risk: you understand what happens if the exploit fails, the console cannot install an official update, or service is required.
Only when every applicable item is explicitly satisfied should you describe the result as “documented as compatible.” If one item is absent, use “unconfirmed” and stop at information gathering.
6. Distinguish official Sony information from community compatibility claims
Sony’s support pages establish where to read the installed version and how official updates are handled. They do not certify third-party jailbreak compatibility. Project repositories and technology reporting can describe a method’s claimed range, but they are not Sony approval and may not cover every hardware or media dependency.

Keep those layers separate in your notes. For example, “Console Information shows 9.00” is an observation from the PS5. “Relapse covered 7.00–13.60 in a September 30, 2026 report” is a dated journalistic claim about one method. Neither statement proves that your particular console can complete an exploit chain.
7. Legal and account consequences to review before modifying anything
United States software agreement
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement, shown as version 1.12 in the cited text, restricts several forms of circumvention. It states:
“You may not (i) use any unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with System Software; (ii) use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism; (iii) reinstall earlier versions of the System Software (“downgrading”);”
The agreement also says Sony may take actions such as disabling some or all software or online or offline console use, ending access to PlayStation services, or denying warranty, repair or other services if it determines that the agreement was violated. Those are the cited US agreement’s terms; they are not a prediction that every console will receive every consequence, and they should not be presented as universal law.
Warranty limits in the United States
The US PS5 hardware warranty excludes, among other things, certain damage involving unlicensed peripherals, modification without written permission, and service or opening performed by anyone other than Sony or an authorized provider. It also says Sony may void the warranty if it reasonably believes the console was used in violation of a separate software agreement. Read the warranty issued for the region where you bought the console, because coverage and remedies vary.

Update and repair cautions in the United Kingdom
Sony’s UK update guidance warns against update data from sources or methods other than those it describes. It says an altered console or an unofficial update method might operate incorrectly, fail to install official updates, and affect warranty or repair-service eligibility. This is UK guidance, not a statement of identical terms worldwide. Use it as a warning to consult the local page and local warranty before proceeding.
8. Do not downgrade or experiment while you are still checking
The checking phase should leave the console unchanged. Do not reinstall an earlier system-software version to try to reach a claimed range; the cited US agreement expressly identifies downgrading as prohibited. Do not apply an unofficial update file merely to test whether a method works. A compatibility question is best answered from the installed version and current documentation, not by creating a new software state.
Do not assume that a failed attempt is harmless. The cited Sony guidance warns that altered consoles or unofficial update methods can have operating and official-update problems and may affect service eligibility. Preserve the original state while you resolve every unknown in the checklist.

The project lists a range that includes your number, but not your model
Record the firmware match, then leave the overall result unconfirmed. Firmware support does not fill an unstated model dependency. Look for a current release note or issue from the same project that explicitly addresses the model; do not substitute a different exploit’s claim.

A report and the project documentation disagree
Give priority to the project’s current, method-specific documentation for the release you would use, while noting the report’s publication date. If neither source resolves the conflict, treat compatibility as unconfirmed. Do not combine the broadest firmware range from one source with the hardware requirements from another as though they were a single tested package.
The documentation is old or undated
Age matters because Sony’s firmware changes and projects change their requirements. Find a dated release note or current compatibility statement. If you cannot establish when the claim applied, keep the console unchanged and classify the result as unknown.
The wording says “might,” “likely” or “works for many users”
Those phrases do not establish a reproducible compatibility condition. Ask whether the project names the exact firmware, model and media prerequisites. Without that specificity, the responsible answer remains unconfirmed.
10. A practical decision framework

11. Common mistakes that produce a false “yes”
- Using the console’s “Up to date” label as if it meant “jailbreakable.” It only reflects Sony’s update status.
- Reading a major version while ignoring the complete decimal version.
- Applying a range reported for Relapse to etaHEN or to an unnamed exploit.
- Assuming that a successful result on one PS5 model transfers to every model.
- Combining a firmware claim from a news article with media instructions from an unrelated project.
- Treating an old compatibility post as current without checking its date.
- Downloading an unofficial update or attempting a downgrade as a “test.”
- Ignoring the region of the agreement and warranty being quoted.
12. What to keep in your records
Save a plain-text note containing the exact Console Information version, the date and time of the check, the method name and release, the firmware range quoted by that method, model or media prerequisites, and the publication date of each source. Keep Sony’s regional agreement and warranty pages identified by region and version where shown. This record prevents a later post or changed web page from silently replacing the conditions you actually evaluated.

13. When the correct answer is “not confirmed”
“Not confirmed” is a technically meaningful result, not a failure to research. It means the available documentation does not clearly match the exact firmware and configuration. Because a complete current matrix for all methods has not been established, many consoles will fall into this category even when an exploit is discussed publicly.
Keep the console on its current software while you verify the missing information. Recheck the named project’s latest documentation at a later date, note any changed version range, and repeat the checklist from the beginning. Do not turn uncertainty into an experiment that could affect operation, updates, warranty or repair eligibility.
