Short answer: a regular PS5 cannot play PS2-format software from a disc. A recently reported homebrew route, PS5SX2, can read some physical PS2 game DVDs on a jailbroken PS5, but the report says PS2 CD-format games are not supported through that disc path. PS5SX2 is emulation—a PCSX2 port running on modified hardware—not Sony-supported, native PS2 compatibility. Treat DVD support as an evolving project feature, not a guarantee that every DVD title will boot.
To check your disc, verify four things in order: the console is running the required jailbroken setup, the disc is DVD rather than CD format, your PS5 model and firmware appear on the project’s current compatibility information, and the specific game has been reported or tested successfully. If any one of those checks fails, direct-disc playback is unconfirmed.

1. Confirm that your PS5 is actually using the required homebrew environment
A normal, unmodified PS5 is a “no”
Do not insert a PS2 disc into an ordinary PS5 expecting backward compatibility. Sony’s manual is the controlling description for the retail system: PS2-format software cannot be played from disc by the standard PS5 software environment. A PS2 DVD that works through an emulator therefore does not make that disc compatible with every PS5.

“Modded” must mean a jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2
The phrase “modded PS5” is too broad to answer the question. The reported route uses PS5SX2, a homebrew PCSX2 port intended to run on a jailbroken PS5. Other modifications, developer settings or unrelated homebrew applications do not establish that PS5SX2 can run or access the optical drive.

Check the project’s current documentation for the supported installation and helper components before troubleshooting the disc. The repository identifies a jailbroken PS5, PS5SX2 helper and additional supporting components as requirements. It also lists particular tested console models and firmware versions in a separate compatibility list and warns that compatibility work continues. Match your exact model and firmware to that list; do not infer support from another user’s console.
Do not confuse emulation with native PS2 playback
PS5SX2 emulates the PlayStation 2 through a port of PCSX2. The console is not switching into an official PS2 mode, and Sony does not provide support for this setup. That distinction matters when you interpret errors: a disc can be readable by the drive yet fail in the emulator because of game, BIOS or compatibility problems.
2. Identify whether the disc is DVD or CD format
Why the format is decisive
The October 10, 2026 report describes the newly demonstrated physical-disc path as supporting PS2 DVD games but not PS2 CD games. The report attributes the difference to a drive limitation, but the PS5SX2 developer repository does not confirm that hardware explanation. Use the DVD/CD observation as the project’s current reported behavior, not as a guaranteed specification for every future build.

How to verify your copy
- Inspect the original disc label and packaging for the format marking. PS2 releases were issued on both DVD and CD, so the title alone is not enough.
- If the marking is unclear, consult reliable documentation for that exact regional release and revision. A later reissue or special edition can use a different disc format from the copy you remember.
- Record the result before testing. A DVD-format result means “eligible for testing,” not “known to work”; a CD-format result means the reported direct-disc route is currently unsupported.
Do not assume that a disc’s color, case design or game size proves its format. Use the physical marking or documentation for the specific disc in your hand.
3. Check the project prerequisites before inserting the game
PS5SX2’s developer lists user-supplied system and game materials rather than bundling them. Prepare the following without treating any item as a substitute for another.
- A compatible jailbroken PS5: verify the exact model and firmware against the project’s current compatibility list.
- PS5SX2 and its helper/supporting components: use the versions and installation guidance documented in the project repository.
- Your own PS2 BIOS dump: the project identifies a user-provided BIOS as a requirement. PCSX2’s FAQ also states that a PS2 BIOS dump is required for emulation: PCSX2 FAQ.
- Your own game material: the project expects users to supply their games. The sources do not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal rule, so check the law that applies where you live rather than relying on a blanket internet claim.
- Current project information: compatibility, file support and installation details can change as the homebrew project develops.
Keep the BIOS and game files associated with your own hardware and discs. Neither Sony nor the PS5SX2 project is being described here as supplying copyrighted PS2 BIOS data or a library of games.

4. Check the exact console model and firmware
Why “my PS5 is jailbroken” is insufficient
Jailbreak availability and emulator compatibility are separate questions. The developer provides a list of tested models and firmware in the repository and warns that the work is ongoing. A console that can run one homebrew application may still lack the firmware, helper support or drive behavior needed by PS5SX2.

- Open the PS5SX2 repository and locate its current compatibility information.
- Read the model and firmware entries exactly as written. Match the complete model identifier and installed firmware, not merely the console family or storage size.
- Note whether your combination is listed as tested, listed with a limitation, or absent. “Absent” means unverified; it is not evidence of failure or success.
- Recheck the list when updating PS5SX2 or changing firmware. Homebrew compatibility can move in either direction after software or system changes.
Do not downgrade, update or alter a console solely because another setup works. The supplied sources do not provide a universal firmware recommendation, and changing firmware can affect the jailbreak itself.
5. Check the game, not just the disc format
DVD eligibility is only the first gate
A DVD-format disc passes the reported media check, but it does not prove that the title will boot, render correctly, save reliably or run at full speed. The developer says it is still working toward broad compatibility across the PS2 library and requests logs and feedback. There is no complete, independently verified title-by-title list for the new direct-disc feature in the supplied material.

Use evidence for the exact title and release
- Search the project’s current issue, compatibility or feedback information for the exact game name and, where relevant, region or revision.
- Distinguish a user report from a developer-confirmed test. A report that a menu appears is not the same as evidence of a playable campaign.
- Look for the observed failure point: disc detection, boot logo, menu, gameplay, audio, video, saving or a crash after loading.
- Keep the project version, PS5 model, firmware, BIOS source and disc format with your notes. Those details make a compatibility report useful and explain why two users can see different results.
When no title-specific information exists, classify the game as unverified. That is the accurate answer even when the disc is a DVD and the console is on the tested-model list.

Once the setup, model, firmware and media checks pass, test the disc in a way that separates drive problems from emulation problems.
- Start the jailbroken PS5 in the documented environment and launch PS5SX2 using the project’s current instructions.
- Confirm that the required BIOS is configured and recognized before diagnosing the optical disc. A missing BIOS can prevent emulation independently of the game.
- Insert the PS2 DVD and wait for the application to detect it. Avoid interpreting the normal PS5 system interface’s inability to launch the disc as a PS5SX2 result.
- Record whether the disc is detected, whether the game reaches its boot screen and whether it progresses into actual gameplay.
- Test a save or another basic in-game function only after the title reaches gameplay. A successful boot logo alone is not full compatibility.
- If the project requests logs, capture them with the project’s documented method. Include the exact title, disc format, PS5 model, firmware, PS5SX2 version and failure point.
Do not repeatedly force-eject or power-cycle a disc while an emulator is still accessing it. If the application reports an error, preserve the message and stop changing several variables at once; otherwise you cannot tell which change affected the result.

When a game image is the practical fallback
If direct-disc access fails, PS5SX2’s documentation lists ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO game-image formats. PCSX2’s FAQ likewise describes using original games from a disc or from dumped ISO/CSO files and still requires a PS2 BIOS dump. A file-based test can therefore answer a different question—whether the emulator handles your game image—without proving that the PS5 optical drive can read your physical disc.
Keep the two tests separate
- Physical-disc test: evaluates the optical-drive path, DVD/CD handling and the title’s emulation compatibility together.
- Game-image test: evaluates loading a supported file format, the BIOS and the title’s emulation compatibility, while bypassing direct optical-disc reading.
- Interpretation: if an image works but the disc does not, the result points toward the direct-disc path rather than proving the game itself is incompatible. If both fail, the BIOS, title or broader emulator compatibility remains unresolved.
Use only game and BIOS material you are entitled to use under the law that applies to you. The supplied technical sources explain formats and requirements but do not provide a universal legal conclusion.
A compact checklist before you buy, burn or troubleshoot
- Is the console a jailbroken PS5 rather than a standard retail system?
- Is PS5SX2 installed with the helper and supporting components required by its current documentation?

- Is the physical game a DVD, not a CD?
- Do current project reports mention the exact title or a comparable failure?

If the answers are “yes” to the first seven questions, the disc is a reasonable candidate for testing—not a guaranteed working title. If the disc is a CD, the October 10, 2026 report’s current finding is that the physical-disc route does not support it.
What can change over time
PS5SX2 is described by its developer as a “passion project” and warns users to expect rough edges, while inviting bug reports with logs and patience. That wording is a reminder that support can improve, regress or change as the code, firmware environment and compatibility list evolve. Revisit the repository before each major setup change and treat dated third-party coverage as a snapshot rather than a permanent specification.
The most defensible answer for any individual disc is therefore conditional: a standard PS5 is ruled out; a jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2 may read a PS2 DVD; PS2 CD support is currently reported as absent on the direct-disc path; and the exact console, firmware and game still require separate verification.
