Start with Amazon’s price-history chart, then compare the exact item and its total checkout price with other sellers. A sale badge, crossed-out price or discount percentage alone does not show whether a Prime Day offer is unusually low for that product.
Check the item’s actual price history
On an eligible Amazon product page, select Price history beside the price. You can also ask Alexa a Shopping question such as “What’s the price history?” Amazon says its feature offers 30- and 90-day views, with a 365-day view rolling out in some markets. Availability can change; Amazon’s page lists the U.S., U.K., Canada and India, and describes the 365-day rollout in the U.S., U.K. and India. Check the page or Alexa for what is available to you now. Look at the longest view available. Note the item’s ordinary range, previous dips and whether the current price sits below those levels. A discount can be genuine relative to a reference price yet unremarkable compared with recent prices. The chart helps answer whether this is a notable drop for this item, not whether it is the best price available anywhere.
Read Amazon’s reference-price labels carefully
Amazon describes List Price (also called MSRP) as a reference price submitted by sellers, manufacturers or suppliers and validated by Amazon. Its Typical Price, sometimes labeled “Was,” is the median price paid on Amazon in the preceding 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. Amazon says deal savings are based on validated reference prices and that it works to offer deals at the lowest price in at least the prior 30 days. These are Amazon’s stated methods, not independent proof that a particular offer is a good buy. Compare the exact item at other sellers
Before comparing prices, make sure the listings are for the same product. Match the manufacturer and model number, then check details such as size, storage, color and included accessories or bundle contents. A lower price on a different variant is not a like-for-like comparison. The FTC recommends recording the manufacturer or model and relevant item details when comparison shopping. Compare the amount you would actually pay, not just the displayed item price. Include shipping, delivery charges, taxes and other fees, and read conditions such as eligibility or offer restrictions. The FTC also cautions that comparison sites may promote manufacturers’ products or rank sellers based on payments, so consider how a site presents its results.

Use a tracker or alert when timing is flexible
Amazon says shoppers can set a target price and receive a notification if an item reaches it. If you do not need the item immediately, an alert can help you avoid making a rushed decision based on a sale countdown. Amazon’s price-history and alert information

Make the buy-or-wait decision
- Consider buying now if the item is one you already want and budgeted for, and the current price is meaningfully below its recent range or competitive with the best total price you found for the same model.
- Consider waiting or buying elsewhere if the price is close to what the item has recently cost, another seller offers a lower total price, or you are not sure you need it. A future drop is possible, but no history chart or alert guarantees when one will happen.
Amazon’s 2026 account says more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature, and the average customer checked it three times a month. Amazon also reported more than $50 billion in savings on deals and coupons during 2025 worldwide.
