How to check whether a Polygon token or wallet address is linked to a scam

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Start with the complete contract or wallet address, not its name or ticker. Open the address on the Polygon explorer, confirm you are viewing Polygon mainnet (chain ID 137), and compare the address with a reference published on the project’s independently opened official domain. Then treat explorer reputation reports, verified source code, transaction history, sell activity and wallet security alerts as separate risk signals. None of them, alone or together, certifies that a token or address is safe.

This process can identify inconsistencies and strong warning signs. It cannot prove that an anonymous team is honest, that verified code is harmless in every situation, or that a clean-looking address will not become malicious later.

Know which address you are checking

“Polygon token address” and “Polygon wallet address” describe different things. A token contract is the smart-contract address that defines a token’s balances, transfers and other rules. A wallet address is an account that can hold assets and sign transactions. A scam can involve either one: a fake token contract can imitate a legitimate asset, while a wallet can receive deposits, drain funds or impersonate a project’s treasury.

Token contract

Token names and symbols are not unique. Several unrelated contracts can call themselves the same thing, use the same ticker or copy a logo. The full hexadecimal contract address is the identity you must compare. When a project publishes multiple networks, record the Polygon address specifically rather than assuming an Ethereum address is valid on Polygon.

Wallet address

For a wallet, inspect the exact address that received or requested funds. A similar-looking address can differ by only a few characters. Check the transaction that introduced the address, the assets it moved and the contracts it interacted with. An explorer history shows activity; it does not reveal who controls a private key or establish that the owner is legitimate.

Get the exact address from a trusted reference

  1. Open the project’s official domain yourself. Type the domain or use a bookmark rather than following an unsolicited message, advertisement or social-media reply. Locate the project’s documentation, contract-address page or network-deployment information.
  2. Copy the complete address. Compare every character, including the beginning and end. Do not rely on a displayed token name, ticker, icon, QR-code preview or an address copied from an unfamiliar transaction.
  3. Check more than one independent reference when possible. A project’s own page can be compromised or can publish an error. A reputable token directory may help you find a candidate, but the directory entry still needs to match the project’s current Polygon deployment.
  4. Keep the address as plain text while comparing. This reduces the chance of accidentally selecting a look-alike address from clipboard history or a wallet’s autocomplete list.

Polygon Support explains that searching a token in CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap can help locate its contract, but warns that an address shown for another chain may not have been updated for Polygon. Read its guidance on finding a token contract at Polygon Support’s token-contract article.

Confirm you are on Polygon mainnet

Before interpreting any transaction, verify the network in both the explorer and your wallet. Polygon mainnet uses chain ID 137; Polygon Support identifies Polygonscan as its block explorer in its Polygon-mainnet setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that the wallet’s selected network is Polygon, not Ethereum, a test network or another chain with a similarly named asset.
  • Confirm that the explorer page identifies the Polygon network and that the address is being viewed in the intended chain context.
  • Do not treat an Ethereum “root” contract as the Polygon token automatically. Polygon’s token-list documentation distinguishes a root contract on another chain from the Polygon “child” contract; see Polygon Support’s root-and-child contract explanation.

A correct-looking address on the wrong chain can lead to a false match. Chain, contract and deployment must all agree before you continue.

Inspect the address on Polygonscan

Paste the exact address into Polygonscan and read the page as evidence, not as an approval certificate. Check the address type, labels, token transfers, ordinary transactions and contract interactions. For a wallet, pay attention to whether activity is consistent with the role the project claims—for example, a supposed treasury that repeatedly routes funds through unrelated contracts deserves further investigation. For a token, inspect the contract page, creator or deployer context, holders and transfer history.

Read Token Reputation reports

Polygonscan can display Token Reputation warnings or reports concerning scam, phishing, fraud, spam or misrepresentation. A warning is a reason to stop and investigate before sending money or signing anything. The absence of a warning means only that no displayed report has established a warning; it is not a clean bill of health. Polygonscan says it does not endorse or disapprove projects shown on the chain. Its explanation of the system and its disclaimer are in Polygonscan Token Reputation documentation.

Check source-code verification

A verified contract page means the uploaded source code matches the bytecode deployed at that address. This transparency can let you inspect functions and understand what a wallet may be asked to sign. It does not prove that the team is honest, that the code has no harmful economic behavior, or that every execution path is safe. Polygonscan describes what verification does and does not establish in its contract-verification guide.

If the source is unverified, you lose an important transparency signal and should require stronger independent evidence before interacting. If it is verified, do not stop your review there: a malicious or deceptive project can publish readable code.

Examine creator, holders and transfers

Look at the contract creator or deployer, the earliest transactions and the distribution of holdings. Concentrated ownership, rapidly changing deployer activity, or transfers that do not fit the project’s stated purpose are reasons to pause. These patterns are clues rather than proof: legitimate launches can begin with concentrated allocations, and a familiar-looking history can be manufactured.

For a wallet address, read the chronological transactions rather than judging a single incoming payment. Check whether the address has repeatedly sent funds to unrelated contracts, received many tiny deposits or appeared in transactions that your project contact never mentioned. Do not send a test payment merely to see what happens; a test transaction still exposes your funds and can confirm that your wallet is active.

Compare Polygon’s contract with other-chain listings

Token directories often show separate deployments for Ethereum, Polygon and other networks. Polygon Support’s guidance specifically cautions that an address displayed for another chain may not be updated for Polygon. A matching name and ticker across two chains is therefore insufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the chain named beside the directory’s contract address.
  2. Find the Polygon-specific entry, if one is listed.
  3. Compare that address character-for-character with the project’s official Polygon reference.
  4. Open the Polygon address on Polygonscan and confirm that the token name, symbol and decimals are consistent with the project’s documentation.

If the project gives conflicting addresses, has silently changed deployments or pressures you to use an address found only in a private message, do not proceed until the conflict is resolved through an independently verified channel.

Look for signs that holders can actually sell

A token can allow purchases while preventing ordinary holders from selling. MetaMask identifies an absence of sell transactions as a possible honeypot warning in its smart-contract safety guidance. On the explorer, inspect whether unrelated wallets have completed sells or only buys and transfers.

This is a clue, not a conclusive test. A new token may have little history, a token may trade through a mechanism that is not obvious from a simple transfer list, and a few successful sells do not guarantee that your transaction will succeed. Never risk a large amount to perform a “test sell.” If you choose to interact at all, understand the transaction and approval you are signing, use the smallest amount you can afford to lose and stop if the contract or wallet presents unexpected conditions.

Read wallet security alerts before signing

Wallet software may provide automatic checks for tokens, addresses, websites, transactions and signature requests. MetaMask describes these checks as trust signals and says that a malicious classification indicates high confidence of scam, phishing or wallet-draining activity. Its documentation, How to manage security alerts to protect your wallet, also states that verification is not investment advice and does not guarantee safety or value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Read the destination address and network shown in the confirmation screen.
  • Inspect the requested action: a token transfer, an approval, a permit or an arbitrary signature are not interchangeable.
  • Take a warning seriously and stop rather than repeatedly retrying the transaction.
  • If the wallet displays no warning, continue the independent contract and project checks; a missing alert is not proof that the recipient is safe.

Security alerts supplement explorer research. They do not replace comparing the full address with an official reference.

Recognize dusting attacks without interacting with the dust

A dusting attack sends a very small, unsolicited amount of a token to many wallets. Polygon Support says such transfers can be used to trace wallet activity and may support later phishing or extortion attempts. A tiny deposit does not by itself prove that your keys were stolen, and it is not a reason to visit a link embedded in the token’s name or transfer memo.

Polygon Support’s article on the subject notes: We don’t exactly have a way to stop this, but with some exchanges, they automatically prevent this from happening. That statement is specific to the dusting scenario. The practical response is to avoid interacting with the unknown asset, hide or ignore it in the wallet interface, and watch for follow-up messages that claim to help you recover or sell it. Read the full context at Polygon Support’s dusting-attack guidance.

If you already transferred funds or approved a contract

Checking an address after an incident can explain what happened, but it cannot reverse a confirmed transaction or prove that your wallet remains secure. Stop signing new requests from the suspicious site or token. Do not disclose your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key to anyone claiming to be support, an investigator or a recovery service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After an unsolicited transfer

  • Do not click links in the token’s name, symbol, memo or accompanying message.
  • Record the transaction hash and the exact sending address for your own incident notes.
  • Monitor the wallet for follow-up approvals, signature requests or messages that create urgency.

After a suspicious approval or signature

  • Stop using the questionable website and do not approve another transaction to “cancel” the first one unless you understand exactly what it does.
  • Use your wallet provider’s documented security and approval-management guidance from a clean session.
  • If you believe signing credentials or the recovery phrase were exposed, treat the wallet as compromised and move remaining assets only after obtaining trusted, wallet-specific incident advice.

An explorer address check cannot determine whether someone has copied your recovery phrase. Key security is a separate question from whether a particular token contract is fraudulent.

Signal What it can tell you What it cannot prove Practical response
Official address matches exactly The contract or wallet is the one the project currently publishes on its independently opened domain. That the project is honest or the code is safe. Continue checking the chain, explorer and activity.
Polygonscan reputation warning There is a reported concern such as scam, phishing, fraud, spam or misrepresentation. That every unreported address is safe. Pause; investigate independently and normally avoid interaction until the concern is resolved.
Verified source code Uploaded source matches the deployed bytecode and can be inspected. That the logic is harmless or the operators are trustworthy. Read the relevant functions and continue reviewing ownership and activity.
Normal-looking transfers and sells Some wallets have used the token or address in ways consistent with ordinary trading. That your transaction will succeed or that the activity is not manufactured. Treat it as supporting evidence only; never make a large test trade.
Wallet security alert The wallet provider’s system has identified a trust or malicious-activity signal. That an address with no alert is safe or valuable. Heed malicious warnings and read every confirmation request.
Unsolicited dust transfer The address may be part of a tracking, phishing or extortion campaign. That the wallet keys are compromised. Do not interact with the token or follow its links; monitor for follow-up scams.

Common mistakes that make a check unreliable

Searching only by name

Names, tickers and logos can be copied. Search results can also place a similarly named contract above the one you need. Start with the full address and use the name only as a consistency check.

Assuming a blue check or verified badge is approval

Explorer verification concerns source-code matching, not business legitimacy. Reputation systems report known concerns but do not certify every unreported project.

Confusing chains

An Ethereum root contract, a Polygon child contract and a testnet deployment can all have different addresses. Confirm chain ID 137 and the Polygon deployment before comparing activity.

Trusting a clean page

New scams may not yet have reports, and an address can change behavior after you inspect it. Absence of a warning is inconclusive.

Signing to investigate

Connecting a wallet or signing an approval gives the contract an opportunity to act. You can learn a great deal from public explorer data without granting permissions or sending funds.

Letting urgency replace evidence

Claims that an allocation expires, a warning must be bypassed immediately or a recovery payment is required are reasons to slow down. Verify through channels you opened yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Copy the complete contract or wallet address from an independently opened official source.
  2. Confirm Polygon mainnet and chain ID 137 in the wallet and explorer.
  3. Match the Polygon-specific address, not merely an Ethereum or other-chain address.
  4. Read Polygonscan’s reputation information, creator context, holders, transfers and transaction history.
  5. Check whether the contract source is verified, while remembering what verification does not establish.
  6. Look for ordinary sell activity and investigate any buy-only pattern without performing a risky test trade.
  7. Read wallet security alerts and every requested permission or signature.
  8. Ignore unsolicited dust tokens and links, and stop if evidence conflicts or pressure increases.

The safest conclusion is often “not enough evidence to interact.” Waiting for a project to resolve an address discrepancy costs less than sending funds to an address that only looks familiar.
