What a legitimate listing should let you verify
A trustworthy listing gives you enough information to identify exactly what is being sold and who is responsible for the transaction. Start by writing down the expansion name, language, format, stated condition, seller identity and total delivered price. Then compare those details with Pokémon’s official product information for that expansion.

The word “booster box” is not a substitute for a product specification. Pokémon distinguishes individual booster packs, full display boxes, preconstructed decks, Elite Trainer Boxes, collections and tins. Products can look similar while containing different items, so a listing that uses a familiar photograph but names the wrong format deserves scrutiny.

1. Identify the exact product before judging the seller
Confirm the expansion
Record the precise expansion or set named in the listing. Do not rely on a generic title such as “Pokémon booster box” or on characters shown in the photograph. Search the expansion name in Pokémon’s official product information and check that the branding, spelling and product type correspond to one another.
Expansion-specific information matters because box contents and packaging can differ by release. The official sources available to buyers do not establish one configuration that applies to every expansion. Verify the box-level contents for the particular set rather than assuming that a familiar number of packs, cards or accessories applies everywhere.
Confirm the language
Language is part of the product identity. A listing can show authentic-looking artwork while offering a different language edition from the one you intended to buy. Look for the language in the title, description, photographs and any seller-selected variation. If those fields disagree, ask the seller to clarify in writing before purchasing.

Compare like with like when checking price or availability. A price for one language edition cannot authenticate, or fairly benchmark, another edition. Do not infer language from a character name, a small logo or a cropped image when the listing does not state it clearly.
Confirm the format
Make sure the seller is offering a full display box rather than a single booster pack, a loose group of packs, a preconstructed deck, an Elite Trainer Box, a collection or a tin. Read the quantity and contents in the written description, not only the headline. If the title says “box” but the description says “one pack” or “random packs,” treat that conflict as a reason to pause.
Confirm the condition
Note whether the listing says new, sealed, opened, damaged, resealed or otherwise used. A sealed display box and a box assembled from loose packs are different purchases even if their photographs look alike. Ask what the condition statement covers: the outer box, the individual packs, or both. Save the answer with the listing record.

2. Compare the listing with Pokémon’s official information
Use official images as a reference, not a certificate
Pokémon Support recommends familiarizing yourself with official product images. Compare the expansion name, set branding, language markings, logos and overall packaging layout. Check all visible sides in the seller’s photographs when available, and look for inconsistencies between the photos and the written description.

Sellers can reuse official photographs, and a photograph may not show the actual box. Pokémon’s warning is important here: fake booster packs can be very difficult to distinguish from real ones. Treat image comparison as a way to find mismatches, not as final authentication.
Check that the product name and artwork agree
The named expansion should match the symbols and branding shown on the package. Be cautious when a title names one set but the photographs show another, when the description mixes products, or when the seller uses a broad stock image for several different variations. Request current photographs of the actual item if the listing does not make that clear.
Check the stated contents against the expansion’s information
Use the official information for that expansion to verify what the product format is intended to contain. Do not assume that every display box has identical pack counts or inserts. If the seller’s promised contents do not fit the official description, ask for clarification and retain the response.
3. Evaluate the seller and the transaction
Identify the actual seller
On a marketplace, distinguish the platform from the individual seller. Check the seller name, transaction history, feedback pattern and how long the account has been active when those details are available. A recognizable marketplace name does not authenticate an individual listing. Pokémon’s guidance points buyers toward major retailers and reputable local hobby shops, but it does not certify every seller operating on a marketplace.

Read the condition, shipping and return terms
Before paying, record the promised condition, dispatch location, shipping method and delivery estimate. Then read the platform’s current return, refund and dispute rules, including any deadlines and requirements for photographs or tracking. These terms are your recourse if the item is materially different from the listing; they are not evidence that the box is authentic.
Check whether the seller’s terms allow a return for an item that is counterfeit, misdescribed or damaged in transit. If the listing says all sales are final, factor that into the decision before purchase. Keep screenshots or a saved copy of the listing because descriptions and photographs can change after the sale.
Ask focused questions
Useful questions are specific and easy for the seller to answer:
- Which expansion and language is this exact box?
- Is this a complete display box or a collection of loose packs?
- Are the photographs of the item being shipped, rather than stock images?
- What condition applies to the outer box and to the packs inside?
- What is the return process if the item is not as described?
Save the seller’s answers. A clear answer does not prove authenticity, but an evasive or contradictory answer is a meaningful reason to stop.
4. Treat an unusually low price as a warning signal
Pokémon identifies a pack priced dramatically below suggested retail as a strong counterfeit warning. Use that guidance qualitatively: compare the same expansion, language and format with current prices from reputable retailers or established local hobby shops. Do not convert the warning into a fixed percentage or universal cutoff. Official guidance does not establish a numeric discount threshold, and demand and availability can vary by set.
Price alone is not an authentication test. A legitimate seller might discount damaged packaging, clear old inventory or charge different shipping, while a counterfeit listing might be priced close to the market. The question is whether the price is unusually low and whether other details also conflict: an unclear language edition, stock photographs, a new account, vague condition or weak return terms.

5. Do not buy a promised card pull
Booster packs are randomly packed. Packaging artwork shows Pokémon featured in the expansion, not the contents of an individual pack, and no particular card or rarity is guaranteed in a specific pack. A listing that implies a particular card must be inside because it appears on the box art is making a claim the packaging does not support.

Evaluate the product identity and transaction terms separately from any claim about what you might pull.
6. Compare multiple listings on an equal basis
When several listings compete for your money, compare only equivalent products. Record the following fields before choosing:

A listing that is slightly more expensive but clearly identifies the product and offers workable recourse can be a safer transaction than a cheaper listing with ambiguous details. That is a risk decision, not a guarantee of authenticity.
7. Follow this pre-purchase checking sequence
- Copy the listing details. Save the title, description, photographs, seller name, price, shipping promise and return terms.
- Write down the product identity. Record the expansion, language, format and stated condition. Mark any field the listing leaves unclear.
- Check Pokémon’s official product information. Compare the name, branding, language indicators, format and expansion-specific contents.
- Inspect the photographs critically. Look for mismatches, but remember that a matching image is not authentication and may not depict the actual item.
- Review the seller. Examine the seller’s history and answers. Separate the individual seller from the marketplace hosting the listing.
- Benchmark the total price. Compare equivalent products from reputable current sellers. Treat a dramatically low price as a warning, not as proof.
- Read the recourse terms. Confirm how returns or disputes work if the item is counterfeit, misdescribed or damaged.
- Decide whether uncertainty remains. If expansion, language, format, condition or seller responsibility is still unclear, do not treat the listing as verified. Ask a reputable local trading-card shop for an opinion or choose a listing with clearer evidence.
8. What to do when the package arrives
Compare the received product with the saved listing before discarding anything. Check that the expansion, language, format and stated condition are the same as promised. Keep the receipt and the original package, including its barcode. These details can be needed when asking for help or reporting a concern.

Do not treat an intact-looking seal or familiar artwork as conclusive proof. Official support specifically notes that counterfeit booster packs can be difficult to discern from genuine ones. If the product differs from the listing, document the discrepancy with clear photographs and preserve the packaging and transaction record while you contact the seller or platform through its stated process.

9. Where to get help with a suspected counterfeit
Ask a specialist local shop
Pokémon suggests asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate potentially counterfeit cards. Choose a shop with established trading-card experience and take the product, receipt and original packaging. An in-person opinion can help identify whether the item warrants a formal complaint, but it does not replace the seller’s or platform’s return process.
Report the concern to Pokémon Support
Pokémon Support’s request form accepts a description of the suspected counterfeit product and the retailer website link. Provide the expansion, language, format, seller identity, listing details, purchase date, photographs, receipt and barcode when available. Keep your wording factual: describe what was advertised, what you received and which details do not match.
Use the transaction’s dispute route
Follow the return or dispute instructions that applied when you purchased. Submit the evidence requested by the platform or retailer within its stated deadline. Pokémon Support can receive a counterfeit report, but its guidance does not validate an individual marketplace seller or define that marketplace’s refund policy.
Common mistakes that make a listing look safer than it is
- Trusting the platform name. A listing is made by a particular seller; the hosting platform is not an authenticity certificate.
- Using one photograph as proof. Official images help you compare details, but stock images and copied photographs can hide the item’s identity.
- Assuming every “box” is the same. A display box, loose packs and other boxed products have different formats and contents.
- Comparing unlike prices. Different expansions, languages, conditions and shipping terms cannot be benchmarked as one product.
- Believing artwork predicts pulls. The featured Pokémon shown on packaging do not identify the cards inside an individual randomly packed booster.
- Inventing a price threshold. There is no official universal percentage or amount that proves a listing is counterfeit.
- Discarding evidence. A receipt, original package and barcode support a return, shop evaluation or report.
What official guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Pokémon’s guidance supports a careful comparison of official product images, a warning about dramatically underpriced packs, recognition of full booster display boxes as a product format, and use of reputable retailers or local hobby shops. It also explains that pack contents are randomized and provides a route for reporting suspected counterfeit merchandise.
It does not publish a market-wide counterfeit rate, certify every marketplace seller, set a universal price threshold, define one box configuration for every expansion or settle a platform’s current return rules. Those limits are why a legitimate-looking listing still requires a product-identity check and a review of the transaction terms.
A practical decision rule
Proceed only when the expansion, language, format and condition are clear; the listing is consistent with official product information; the seller answers specific questions; the total price is plausible for an equivalent product; and the return or dispute route is understood. If one of those foundations is missing, the listing is unverified. If several conflict—especially an unclear product identity combined with a dramatically low price and weak recourse—choose a different seller or obtain an in-person evaluation before spending money.
