Before buying, look up the exact model and generation in an independent teardown scorecard and the manufacturer’s repair-support pages. Then check the parts you are most likely to replace, whether they are modular and accessible, whether instructions and parts are available where you live, and whether software steps or repair costs could make the job impractical.
Start with the exact model, not the brand
Record the full product name, generation or year, and configuration. A score or repair guide for a similarly named device may not apply, especially when laptop configurations use different parts. Search the exact model on the manufacturer’s support site and in an independent teardown scorecard. iFixit’s phone and laptop scorecards are based on device teardowns, and the organization says its scoring rubric changes over time, so check the criteria for the version you are viewing: iFixit repairability scorecards.

Use manufacturer information to confirm official guides, parts, and service options. Use independent teardowns to understand how the device comes apart. Neither source alone answers every practical question: a device may be physically repairable but lack accessible parts, or have parts available that are difficult to replace.

Check the repairs you are most likely to need
Repairability can vary from one component to another. For each likely repair, find out whether the part can be replaced independently, what must be removed first, and whether the process risks damaging another component.

For a phone
- Check the display, battery, charging port, and back cover.
- Look for adhesive, clips, screw types, and whether opening the phone involves removing a fragile screen or another major assembly.
- Confirm that the replacement part and instructions cover the exact model, not just the product family.
For a laptop
- Check the battery, display, keyboard, storage, memory, fan, and ports.
- Find out whether memory and storage are replaceable or soldered, and whether the keyboard is a separate part or riveted into a larger assembly.
- Check whether a common repair requires removing the display or another costly assembly.
Model-specific scorecard examples show why a brand-wide verdict can mislead. iFixit’s current phone listings describe 2025 iPhone models with screen and battery access considerations, multiple screw types, and Apple-provided parts and instructions; its Pixel 10 entry says screen repairs are prioritized and Google provides parts and instructions. Its laptop listings describe 2026 ThinkPad models with repairable or upgradeable memory and storage and straightforward battery, display, keyboard, and fan replacement, while the MacBook Pro 14-inch (M5, 2025) entry identifies non-removable storage and a riveted keyboard. These are details for those listed models, not universal rankings of Apple, Google, Lenovo, or any other manufacturer.
Verify that a repair can actually be completed
Before buying, open the repair guide or service manual for the exact model. Check that it is accessible, sufficiently detailed for the intended repairer, and covers the component you care about. Then confirm that the manufacturer or a reputable supplier lists the required part and tools for your region.

- Disassembly: Note the tools, fasteners, adhesive, and order of removal. A part may technically be replaceable but still require specialized tools or a risky teardown.
- Parts: Confirm that the exact replacement is listed and currently obtainable. Check shipping, delivery time, and geographic restrictions rather than assuming a parts listing means local availability.
- Software: Look for calibration, part registration, pairing, or manufacturer-only software steps after replacement. Physical access alone does not establish that a repair will work without them.
- Service: If you will use a shop, ask whether it accepts that exact model and request a quote before purchase. Verify warranty terms and whether the repair affects coverage with the relevant manufacturer or seller; those conditions can depend on the model, location, and type of repair.
Read repairability scores as evidence, not a verdict
A headline score is a useful screening tool, not a complete answer about repair cost or ease. Read the breakdown and check what the score measures. iFixit’s model-level teardown entries discuss individual components and the organization notes that its rubric changes over time, so older scores may not be directly comparable with newer ones.
Some places also require product repairability information. In France, the government’s repairability index is scored from 1 to 10 and applies to listed categories that include laptops. Its criteria cover documentation; disassembly, access, tools, and fasteners; spare-parts availability; spare-parts price relative to the product; and category-specific factors. The score must be displayed at the point of purchase for covered products, with further detail accessible to consumers. EU smartphone and slate-tablet energy-label and ecodesign requirements began applying on 20 June 2025, according to iFixit’s explainer. The rules provide information about repairability and durability, parts availability periods, and software updates. The explainer also notes limits: the EU score it discusses does not include spare-parts pricing, and the requirements do not guarantee that every component is easy for users to repair. These French and EU provisions have defined geographic and product scopes; they do not mean every phone or laptop worldwide must carry the same score.
Compare shortlisted devices side by side
Use the same checks for each candidate. If information is missing, record it as unknown and look for confirmation rather than treating absence of evidence as proof that a repair is impossible.

Work out the real cost before deciding
A high repairability score does not necessarily mean an affordable repair. For the parts you checked, record the current replacement-part price, any required tools, shipping, and professional labor. If you would not do the work yourself, compare a local repair quote with the device’s price and with the likely repair costs of other shortlisted models.
