A Digital Life Certificate (DLC) is generated for the pensioner after that individual completes Aadhaar-based biometric authentication. If you cannot confirm the person’s status, contact them or a trusted caregiver; if it remains uncertain, pause and ask the pension disbursing agency what to do. If the pensioner has died, do not submit a life certificate for them.
What Jeevan Pramaan can—and cannot—tell you
Jeevan Pramaan is India’s Aadhaar-based digital life certificate service. The pensioner provides pension details and completes biometric authentication; the service says a successful authentication generates an individual certificate stored in its repository: Jeevan Pramaan. This is certificate generation, not a public “alive” lookup for relatives.

A generated DLC is made available electronically to the pension disbursing agency, so the pensioner does not ordinarily need to submit a physical copy to the bank or post office. Generation does not itself guarantee acceptance: the pension sanctioning or disbursing authority decides whether to approve it. The official Jeevan Pramaan FAQ says pensioners can check certificate status by downloading it. If it is rejected, contact the agency, correct the pension information as directed, and generate a new certificate if required.

What to do before submitting a certificate
- Confirm the beneficiary’s status. Contact the pensioner directly. If they cannot respond, verify through a caregiver or another reliable person who has recent, direct knowledge.
- If you still cannot confirm, pause. Contact the pension disbursing agency and explain that the beneficiary’s status is unresolved. Ask how to proceed and whether any deadline-related steps are needed. Do not use a pending deadline as a reason to submit a certificate without confirming the person is alive.
- If the pensioner is confirmed alive, check eligibility and details. The pensioner’s Pension Sanctioning Authority must be onboarded with Jeevan Pramaan. The pensioner supplies Aadhaar number, name, mobile number and self-declared pension details, which may include PPO and account information. Incorrect details can lead to rejection. Confirm the beneficiary’s due date with the relevant authority: certificate validity follows that authority’s rules, not one universal deadline.
- Choose a generation route the pensioner can use. The FAQ lists Citizen Service Centres, pension disbursing offices such as banks, post offices or treasuries, and home generation. Availability depends on the authority and location.
- Check receipt and approval. Because the agency determines acceptance, follow its instructions for checking the DLC status and resolving a rejection.
Choose an authentication option that fits the pensioner
The current Jeevan Pramaan app page lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14 or later. Check the page for current requirements before installing or assisting someone with setup.
#1 Best Overall
| Route | What it requires | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-camera face authentication | The current app uses the phone camera and does not require a separate biometric device. | A potential home option if the pensioner can complete the process and has a compatible phone. |
| Fingerprint or iris authentication | A compatible biometric device and its RD service. The Windows client requires an external fingerprint or iris device. | When using a supported device-based route; confirm certification and compatibility before relying on hardware. |
| Assisted centre or disbursing office | Availability and assistance depend on the local centre, office and pension authority. | If the pensioner needs in-person help or cannot use a phone-based route. |
| IPPB doorstep assistance | India Post Payments Bank says a pensioner can contact a post office or request a doorstep visit by a postman or Grameen Dak Sevak for DLC generation. Check local availability and current terms with IPPB. | If travel is difficult and the service is available in the beneficiary’s area. |
If the pensioner has died
Do not generate or submit a life certificate for a deceased beneficiary. Notify the pension disbursing agency and ask for its death-reporting process and instructions for any eligible family member seeking to claim or continue family pension. The required steps and documents depend on the pension scheme and agency.
A DoPPW circular dated 20 February 2020 describes a process specifically for pensioners residing abroad. For a spouse holding a joint account with the pensioner, it describes informing the pension-disbursing bank and providing a death certificate, PPO, proof of age or date of birth, and an undertaking. This is an example for that stated overseas context, not a universal document checklist; ask the relevant agency what applies to the case.
