A large “discount” is not proof that a PC game is cheap. A deal is genuinely good only when the exact edition and license cost less than that game normally sells for in your region, the bundle contains value you will use, and buying now is worth more to you than waiting. Check the game’s own price history, compare like-for-like offers, then verify the merchant’s checkout page before paying.
What “a good price” really means
The percentage shown beside a sale compares today’s price with a reference price chosen by the store. It does not tell you whether the game frequently reaches this price, whether another store is cheaper, or whether the reference price applies to the same edition you want. A 70% reduction can still be ordinary for a game that reaches the same level every few weeks; a smaller reduction can be notable if the title rarely goes on sale.

There is no universal discount cutoff that makes every game a bargain. A sensible judgment combines seven checks:

- the final amount in your own currency;
- the same game, edition, downloadable content and license;
- the platform that will redeem the purchase;
- your region’s price and any regional restrictions;
- the current price compared with the game’s recorded history;
- the useful value of any bundle or subscription access; and
- the cost of waiting for a future sale.
Use the process below for each offer instead of treating the advertised percentage as the verdict.

1. Identify exactly what the offer includes
Open the listing and write down the product before comparing it with anything else. Record the game name, edition, included downloadable content, redemption storefront, license type and region. A base game, deluxe edition, subscription entitlement and permanently owned key are different purchases even when their titles look similar.
Edition and content
Check whether the listing is the standard game, a deluxe or ultimate edition, a package with a season pass, or downloadable content for a game you already own. Compare the actual contents, not just the cover image. If you do not want the extra items, a more expensive edition is not automatically better value.
Redemption platform
Confirm where the code or entitlement activates. A key that redeems on one PC storefront is not interchangeable with an account purchase on another storefront, and subscription access may end when the subscription ends. Keep permanent ownership and temporary access in separate comparisons.

Use the store region attached to your account and your normal payment currency. SteamDB explains that regional pricing can differ and that Valve’s published conversion recommendations are guidance rather than a single mandatory price: its March 2026 report describes updated data covering 37 currencies and four region groups, while noting that developers may use different conversion methods or set prices themselves (SteamDB’s 2026 pricing report). A displayed price from another country is not evidence that you can lawfully buy or redeem the game there.
2. Check the game’s Steam price history
SteamDB says every Steam app page has a price table and graph. Find the game through SteamDB’s search box, open the correct app page, and select your own currency and region where the page allows it. The site’s FAQ explains how its price-history pages work and cautions that the data is provided as-is, without guarantees of accuracy, completeness or timeliness (SteamDB FAQ).
- Search for the exact game title in SteamDB.
- Open the app page that matches the edition or package you are considering.
- Inspect the price graph for sale periods and the table for recorded prices.
- Compare today’s price with several previous sale levels, not only the single lowest point.
- Check how far back the page’s history extends before deciding how unusual the current price is.
How to read the graph
Look for the usual sale band. If the current price matches a level that appears repeatedly, it is a normal opportunity rather than an exceptional low. If it is close to the recorded low and that low is rare, the offer may be unusually strong. A current price above the recent sale band may be worth waiting for unless you need the game immediately.
History is evidence of what happened, not a promise about what will happen next. A title may change its list price, leave a sale rotation, or receive a new edition. Treat the length and completeness of the recorded history as part of your confidence: a short record cannot establish a reliable all-time low.

Do not confuse package and bundle records
SteamDB notes that bundle availability is a common reason a user may see an unexpected result and says it uses the price returned by Steam’s API as the lowest price. If a displayed low seems inconsistent with the product page, inspect the package or bundle details and compare the exact item you would receive. Present SteamDB’s behavior as a data-source limitation, not as an independent audit of every store transaction.

3. Compare the same offer on other legitimate stores
Use IsThereAnyDeal to see tracked offers and price-history details across stores. Its getting-started guide explains that game pages include historical prices, waitlists and notification rules, and that a Steam wishlist can be imported (IsThereAnyDeal’s guide). Its live listings can include Steam, Humble Store, Fanatical and other storefronts, along with bundles and subscriptions (IsThereAnyDeal listings).
- Search for the exact game and edition.
- Filter or inspect each listing’s storefront, license and activation platform.
- Compare the final displayed price in your country’s currency.
- Open the merchant listing and verify availability in your country.
- Compare each offer’s historical price information with the current amount.
Price trackers are reference tools, not substitutes for the merchant page. Their data can be incomplete or stale, and listings change quickly. Never rely on a tracker’s amount without opening the final store page immediately before purchase.
4. Check bundles and subscriptions separately
A bundle can explain why a low price appears in a history table, and it can be cheaper than buying the game alone. However, the headline bundle discount is only useful when the included games or downloadable content have value to you.
Calculate useful bundle value
List the bundle’s contents and mark the items you genuinely expect to play or use. Compare the bundle’s total with the cost of purchasing those wanted items individually. Do not count unwanted games as savings; they increase the amount paid without increasing your personal value.
Permanent purchase versus subscription
Compare a permanent license with subscription access on separate lines. A subscription may provide immediate access to several games, but access depends on continued eligibility and the catalogue can change. A permanent purchase remains tied to its stated storefront license. Decide which kind of access matches your purpose before comparing prices.
5. Make regional pricing comparisons correctly
Prices, currencies and regional rules can differ even for the same game. Compare the price shown after signing in to your own store region, not a screenshot or a foreign listing. Check whether the offer is restricted to a particular country group, whether the key can activate in your region, and whether taxes or fees are added at checkout.
When converting prices for your own notes, keep the store’s actual local amount as the decision figure. Exchange-rate calculations can hide regional pricing policies, payment fees or tax treatment. The relevant question is what your account will be charged and whether the resulting license will activate where you live.
6. Decide whether waiting is worth it
Waiting has value only when the expected saving or better edition matters more than playing now. Set a personal target price instead of chasing an abstract “best ever” record. For example, you might decide that the game is worth buying when it reaches a price you can pay comfortably and that is at or below its usual sale band.

Use a waitlist or wishlist alert
Add the game to a Steam wishlist or to an IsThereAnyDeal Waitlist, then customize notification rules around your target. This removes the need to check listings repeatedly and lets you decide when an alert is actionable. An alert tells you that a condition was met; it does not guarantee that the offer is still available when you open it.
Do not treat sale history as a forecast
SteamDB’s FAQ states: “Game publishers set the discounts, and they can choose any discount they want.” The FAQ adds that history can show past sales but cannot identify which games, prices or discounts will appear in a future sale (SteamDB FAQ). A recurring pattern can inform your patience, but it cannot guarantee a date or price.
7. Verify the final checkout page
Before clicking the purchase button, perform a final identity check. This catches errors caused by stale tracker data, similar product names and region-specific restrictions.

- Confirm the redemption platform and whether the license is permanent or subscription-based.
- Confirm your store region and the currency being charged.
- Read activation, country and age restrictions.
- Check the final total after tax, fees or payment-method charges.
- Confirm the refund terms shown by that merchant.
If any of these details differ from the comparison you made, restart the comparison with the corrected offer rather than assuming the difference is minor.
A practical comparison worksheet
Use this checklist when two or more offers compete. Every row should describe the same product and purchase conditions.

Worked examples without relying on a universal discount rule
Large discount, ordinary sale price
Suppose a game is advertised at 60% off. Its SteamDB graph shows the same sale price appearing repeatedly, while another legitimate storefront lists the identical edition for less in your region. The percentage is impressive, but this particular listing is not the best available deal. Choose the lower like-for-like offer if its activation and checkout conditions are equivalent.
Small discount, unusually low price
A different game may show only 20% off, yet its history indicates that it rarely falls below the current amount. If you already intend to play it and the edition, region and license match, the smaller percentage can represent the stronger purchase.
Bundle that is cheaper but not better for you
A bundle may cost less than buying the headline game and its included items separately. If you only want the headline game and would never use the extras, compare the standalone price with your personal value for the bundle. A mathematical discount does not turn unwanted content into a saving.

Subscription access versus ownership
A subscription listing can look cheaper than a permanent purchase. Compare how long you expect to play, whether the title is guaranteed to remain in the catalogue, and whether you need access after the subscription ends. The lower initial payment answers a different need from permanent ownership.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the percentage as the verdict
Problem: The sale badge becomes the only evidence.
Correction: Compare the current amount with the game’s own historical sale band and with equivalent offers elsewhere.
Comparing different editions
Problem: A base game is compared with a deluxe package or downloadable content.
Correction: Match the edition, included content and license before comparing prices.
Trusting a foreign price
Problem: A cheaper currency or country listing is treated as available everywhere.
Correction: Use your own store region, verify activation restrictions and rely on the local checkout total.
Assuming the recorded low is current
Problem: A historical minimum is mistaken for a live offer.

Expecting the next sale to match the last one
Problem: A past discount is treated as a promised future price.
Correction: Set a target and wait only if the potential saving is worth delaying your play time.
Counting every bundle item as savings
Problem: Unwanted games are included in the value calculation.

When should you buy immediately?
Buying now is reasonable when the exact offer is at or near a rare historical low, no equivalent legitimate store is cheaper, the edition and region are correct, and you intend to play before another likely opportunity would matter. It can also make sense when a time-limited bundle contains several items you already planned to buy.
Waiting is more sensible when the current price is above the game’s normal sale band, you have a large backlog, the bundle contains mostly unwanted content, or the same license is cheaper elsewhere. Add an alert and let your budget determine the trigger rather than relying on a dramatic sale label.
Fast five-minute routine
- Copy the exact product name, edition and storefront from the offer.
- Check SteamDB’s graph and table in your own region.
- Check IsThereAnyDeal for equivalent storefront, bundle and subscription offers.
- Set a target based on your budget, urgency and the game’s usual sale range.
- Open the merchant checkout page and verify the final amount, region, license and restrictions.
If the offer passes all five checks, you have evidence for the purchase. If it fails one, the failure tells you what to investigate or why waiting is preferable; the discount percentage alone cannot provide that answer.
