How to Check Whether a Nintendo Switch Game Is Available in Your Region

To check a Nintendo Switch game’s regional availability, open Nintendo eShop with the Nintendo Account you intend to use, confirm that account’s country setting, and search for the exact title. If it is missing, consult Nintendo’s Store page for that game: Nintendo says a missing listing can mean either that the game has not been released yet or that it is not available for purchase in your region. For a physical game card, use its packaging or the Switch’s Options > Software Information > Support Information screen instead. Digital availability, physical-card compatibility, downloadable content (DLC), and eShop-card validity are separate questions.

1. Decide what “available in your region” means

People use the phrase in two different ways:

  • Digital availability: whether the title appears for purchase in the Nintendo eShop associated with a particular Nintendo Account country.
  • Physical compatibility: whether a game card bought elsewhere will run on your console and receive the services you need.

A game can be absent from your eShop while a physical card is usable, or a physical card can run while region-matched DLC is unavailable. Check each part separately before buying.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

There is also a third practical issue: whether you can pay for the software and keep using related content. A title may be listed but require a country-matched payment method, while an imported cartridge may work but reject DLC from your local store. “Can I see it?”, “Can I launch it?” and “Can I buy all of its content?” are different questions.

2. Check a digital game’s eShop listing

Step 1: Identify the country you are actually checking

The Switch eShop does not use a separate country selector for each visit. Its country follows the country of residence set on the Nintendo Account used to open the store. If several users are on the console, select the account whose country you want to verify; two users can therefore see different eShop catalogues on the same Switch.

On your Nintendo Account, verify the country/region of residence before searching. A search result only answers the question for that account’s current country, not automatically for your physical location, console purchase location, or another user’s account. If you recently moved, or if another person set up the account, confirm the setting instead of assuming it matches the console’s country.

Do not use a search made while signed into the wrong profile as evidence that a title is unavailable. Write down the country you are testing and the account that represents it; that makes later checks of DLC, cards, and payment methods easier to compare.

Step 2: Search the exact title

  1. From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
  2. Choose the Nintendo Account whose country you checked.
  3. Use the eShop search function and enter the game’s exact name. Try the official spelling, subtitle, and edition if the game has multiple releases.
  4. Open the result and check that the product page identifies the intended game, edition, and release status.

Search for the base game separately from a demo, soundtrack, bundle, expansion, or DLC item. A result for one edition does not establish that every edition is sold in that country. Likewise, a page that is visible may show a coming-soon date rather than an immediately purchasable product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the product page appears with a purchase option, the digital title is listed for that account’s eShop country. That does not by itself confirm that every language, DLC package, payment method, or physical edition is available there. Check the page’s release date, edition name, and any regional notes before paying.

Step 3: Investigate a missing result

Nintendo’s eShop troubleshooting guidance gives two possible explanations when a specific game does not appear: it may not yet be released, or it may not be available for purchase in your region. A blank search result is therefore not conclusive proof of a regional ban or permanent unavailability.

Open Nintendo’s Store page for the specific game and look for its release information and country-specific purchase listing. If the Store page identifies a future release, wait for that release rather than changing account settings. If it shows the title in some countries but not yours, treat that as regional purchase unavailability. If neither page provides a clear answer, Nintendo Support is the appropriate source for title-specific clarification.

Use the same title and edition when comparing the eShop and Store pages. A regional page can use a different subtitle, publisher name, or release date, so searching only a shortened name can miss the relevant listing. Record whether the page says “available,” gives a future date, or provides no purchase option; those outcomes have different meanings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check a physical game card’s supported region

For a cartridge, the question is not whether your eShop lists the game. Inspect the game-card packaging for regional information, or check the software on the console:

  1. Insert the game card and start the software.
  2. On the HOME Menu, highlight the game and press the + or − button to open Options.
  3. Choose Software Information.
  4. Select Support Information and read the region details shown there.

Use the information tied to the actual card, not a photograph of a similar-looking box or a seller’s generic description. If you are buying second-hand, ask for clear packaging details or check the inserted card yourself before purchasing add-ons.

Nintendo states that, with the exception of consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region, Nintendo Switch game cards are not region locked. In practical terms, a card from another ordinary market will generally start in a Switch from another ordinary market. Nintendo also cautions that it has not tested all overseas software with consoles from every region and does not guarantee full service and support for every combination. “Runs” and “receives complete regional support” are not identical promises.

That caution matters for online services, updates, customer support, and future content. The absence of a lock is a compatibility statement, not a promise that every imported release will receive every service in the same way as a locally distributed copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Keep game-card compatibility separate from DLC compatibility

DLC follows a stricter rule than the basic game card. Nintendo says DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC. A card can launch successfully and still fail to recognize an expansion purchased from a different regional eShop.

Before buying DLC

  • Identify the release region of the base game from its packaging or Options > Software Information > Support Information.
  • Open the DLC’s eShop listing with the account you plan to use and verify that the listing corresponds to that release region.
  • Do not assume that matching language, currency, or console location means the regions match.

If you own an imported card, use the publisher’s stated release region or Nintendo’s support information rather than guessing from the cover art. When the region cannot be established, buying DLC is risky because Nintendo’s compatibility rule is tied to the game’s release region.

The same check applies to season passes, expansion passes, and individually sold add-ons. Treat each item as DLC and confirm its relationship to the base release before redeeming a code or spending eShop funds. A successful download is not proof that the software will recognize the content; the game’s release region must still match.

5. Check eShop-card and payment restrictions

Nintendo eShop cards are intended for the country or region in which they were sold. Nintendo warns that a card issued for one region may not work in another region’s eShop. Match the card’s intended country or region to the Nintendo Account country before redeeming it.

This restriction is independent of whether the game itself is playable. An imported physical game may work while a gift card bought for a different eShop country cannot be redeemed, leaving you unable to purchase its DLC or digital updates through that account.

Payment methods can also be country-specific. If a listing is visible but checkout fails, first confirm that the account country, eShop country, card or payment method, and billing details are intended for the same market. Do not treat a failed payment as proof that the game is unavailable. A listing problem and a payment-authorization problem are separate troubleshooting paths.

Before redeeming a code, read the card’s stated country or region exactly. “International” wording from a marketplace listing is not a substitute for Nintendo’s intended-market information. Once funds are placed on an account, they remain subject to that account’s country rules.

6. Understand what happens if you change your Nintendo Account country

Nintendo allows a person who has moved to another country to change the Nintendo Account country of residence. The eShop changes to the new country the next time it is opened. This is an account migration for a relocation, not a risk-free catalogue switch.

Nintendo says a country change can be blocked by conditions including:

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
  • Unspent balance remaining on the account.

  • A pending downloadable-content pre-order.

Any remaining eShop balance does not transfer to the new country. Resolve the account conditions and understand that lost or stranded funds before attempting a change. Creating or switching accounts solely to bypass a listing can also split purchases, save-related access, memberships, and DLC across accounts, so check the consequences for your own library first.

If you genuinely relocated, plan the change before buying another card or placing a pre-order. Clear the listed obligations, note the balance that must be spent or otherwise dealt with, and reopen eShop after the country is updated. If the change is unavailable, Nintendo Support can explain which account condition is still preventing it.

7. Know where Nintendo eShop is officially available

Nintendo’s Americas support information currently lists Switch eShop availability in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. Nintendo says the eShop is not currently available in other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean covered by that support guidance. For countries in other regions, Nintendo directs customers to the local distributor for feature information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These lists are geographically scoped and can change. If your country is not listed, the absence of an eShop does not identify a particular game’s release status; it means you need the distributor’s current information about local digital purchasing and support. Do not infer worldwide availability from the Americas list, and do not infer that an unsupported country is a permanent rejection of every title.

8. Use this decision process for a game you cannot find

  1. Confirm the account: Check the Nintendo Account country and reopen eShop with that user.
  2. Repeat the exact-title search: Check spelling, subtitles, editions, and whether you are searching for a demo or DLC rather than the base game.
  3. Check Nintendo’s Store page: Determine whether the title has a future release date or a country-specific purchase listing.
  4. Separate digital from physical: If you are considering a card, inspect the packaging or Support Information screen instead of relying on eShop search.
  5. Check related purchases: Before buying DLC or an eShop card, match the DLC and card regions to the game and account.
  6. Escalate unclear cases: Contact Nintendo Support when the Store page, account country, and product information still do not explain the absence.

This order prevents the most expensive mistakes. It establishes the account first, distinguishes an unreleased game from a region-limited one, and only then asks whether an imported card or add-on is sensible.

9. Compare regional versions before buying

When two regional editions are available, compare the practical issues below rather than relying on the word “international” in a listing.

Question What to verify Why it matters
Digital listing Does the title appear in the eShop tied to the intended Nintendo Account country? The account country determines the catalogue and purchase availability.
Release status Does Nintendo’s Store page show an existing listing or a future release? A missing eShop result can mean unreleased, not necessarily region-restricted.
Physical card What region does the packaging or Support Information identify? Ordinary Switch cards are generally not region locked, but Nintendo does not guarantee full support for every overseas combination.
DLC Does the DLC region match the base game’s release region? Nintendo says DLC only works with games released for the same region as the DLC.
eShop funds Is the eShop card intended for the account’s country or region? Cards are restricted to their intended market and may not redeem elsewhere.
Support needs Will you need local updates, online services, customer support, or future expansions? Import compatibility is not a guarantee that every service will be fully supported.

Use this table for each candidate edition, not just the cheapest one. A lower purchase price can be offset if the edition cannot use the DLC you want or if its card and your account belong to different regions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a missing search result is definitive

It is not. Nintendo explicitly identifies both unreleased titles and region-unavailable titles as possible explanations. Check the title’s Store page and release information.

Checking with the wrong user account

The eShop follows the selected Nintendo Account’s country. A family member’s account or a second profile may show a different catalogue. Recheck the account before drawing a conclusion.

Assuming “not region locked” means “everything works”

Game cards are generally not region locked outside the stated China-region exception, but Nintendo does not guarantee testing, service, or support for every imported card and console combination.

Buying DLC by console location

DLC compatibility follows the game’s release region, not simply where the console is being used. Establish the base game’s region first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing country without clearing the account

Balance, active auto-renewal, and pending DLC pre-orders can prevent a country change, and balance does not carry over. Treat a country change as a relocation procedure with financial consequences.

Confusing a store page with a purchase option

A title can have a Nintendo Store page before its release. Confirm whether the page shows a current purchase option or only release information.

Using a marketplace description as the authority

Seller claims such as “works worldwide” do not replace Nintendo’s packaging, Support Information, eShop, or Store details. Verify the actual card and the account that will use it.

11. The shortest reliable checklist

  • Confirm the Nintendo Account country.
  • Open eShop with that account and search the exact title.
  • If absent, check Nintendo’s Store page for release status and country-specific availability.
  • For a card, inspect packaging or Options > Software Information > Support Information.
  • Match DLC’s release region to the base game.
  • Match an eShop card to its intended country or region.
  • Do not change account country casually; balance and account obligations can block or complicate the change.

12. Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I find this game in Nintendo eShop?

Nintendo gives two possibilities: the game may not yet be released, or it may not be available for purchase in your region. Confirm the account country, then check Nintendo’s Store page for the title before concluding that it is region restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Nintendo Switch game cards region-locked?

With the exception of consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region, Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked. Nintendo still cautions that not all overseas software has been tested with every regional console and does not guarantee full service and support.

Will a Nintendo Switch game from another region work on my console?

Ordinary Switch cards generally are not region locked, so the card may run. Check its packaging or Support Information, and remember that successful launch does not guarantee every online service, update, support channel, or add-on.

Can I access the Nintendo eShop for another region?

The eShop on Switch follows the country set on the Nintendo Account used to open it. A country change is intended for relocation, does not carry over remaining balance, and can be blocked by unspent funds, active automatic renewal, or a pending DLC pre-order.

Can I use DLC from my local eShop with an imported game card?

Only when the DLC and the base game were released for the same region. Nintendo specifically says DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC, so verify the card’s release region first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an eShop card from another country redeem on my account?

Not necessarily. Nintendo says eShop cards are limited to the country or region where they were intended to be sold. Match the card’s intended market to the Nintendo Account country before redeeming it.

Does a physical game being playable prove that its digital version is sold locally?

No. Physical-card compatibility and digital listing availability are separate checks. Use the card’s packaging or Support Information for the former and the account-specific eShop plus Nintendo’s Store page for the latter.

What if my country is not listed for Nintendo eShop?

Nintendo’s Americas guidance lists Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States, and says the eShop is not currently available in other covered Latin American and Caribbean countries. For other regions, consult the local Nintendo distributor for current feature information.

13. Bottom line

Start with the Nintendo Account country, search the exact game in that account’s eShop, and use Nintendo’s Store page to distinguish an unreleased title from one unavailable in your region. For an imported card, inspect the packaging or Support Information; for DLC and eShop cards, match the relevant regions exactly. Nintendo’s no-region-lock statement for ordinary Switch cards is useful, but it is not a guarantee of complete service or support. Treat account-country changes as relocation procedures with balance and renewal consequences, not as a casual way to unlock another catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find this game in Nintendo eShop?

Nintendo says it may not yet be released or may not be available for purchase in your region. Check the account country and the game’s Nintendo Store page.

Are Nintendo Switch game cards region-locked?

Except for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region, Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked, although full service and support for every imported combination is not guaranteed.

Will a game from another region work on my console?

It will generally run on ordinary Switch hardware, but verify the card’s region and do not assume every online service, update, or support feature will work identically.

Can I use local DLC with an imported game?

Only if the DLC and base game were released for the same region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I redeem an eShop card from another country?

Nintendo says eShop cards are restricted to the country or region where they were intended to be sold.

Can I change my Nintendo Account country to see another eShop?

Nintendo supports country changes for relocation. Remaining balance does not transfer, and unspent funds, active automatic renewal, or a pending DLC pre-order can block the change.

Does a playable physical card prove the digital version is available locally?

No. Check physical compatibility through packaging or Support Information and digital availability through the account-specific eShop and Nintendo Store.

What if Nintendo eShop is unavailable in my country?

Use Nintendo’s local distributor information. Americas guidance currently lists Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Confirm the Nintendo Account country, search Nintendo eShop, and check Nintendo’s Store page when a title is missing. Physical cards, DLC, eShop cards, and account-country changes each have separate regional rules.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
