How to Check Whether a New Gadget Works With Your Phone and Smart-Home Setup

Before buying, check the exact gadget model against four things: your phone’s operating system and app requirements, the smart-home platforms and device types it supports, its connection protocol, and any required hub or network features. A Matter label helps, but it does not guarantee that every platform supports every device feature.

Start with the exact model and intended setup

Write down the gadget’s full model number and the smart-home app or platform you plan to use. Product-family names and labels such as “smart” are not enough to confirm compatibility; requirements can differ between models and change as apps or firmware are updated.

Check the manufacturer’s current product and setup pages for the minimum phone operating system, required companion app, network connection, and any hub or bridge requirement. If a requirement is unclear, ask the manufacturer about that exact model and the platform you intend to use before buying.

Check your phone and app requirements

Use the gadget maker’s requirements as the deciding check for its app and setup process. General support for a smart-home standard does not necessarily mean a particular product’s app supports your phone.

#1 Best Overall
Aeotec Smart Home Hub, Works as a SmartThings Hub, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter Gateway, Compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, WiFi
  • Connect & control your smart home — Easily link thousands of compatible devices from leading brands to create a connected home environment for lighting, comfort, voice assistants, energy use, and more.
  • Automate your routines — Build custom automations using the SmartThings app to coordinate lights, sensors, switches, and other compatible devices throughout your day. Many automations now run locally for improved speed and reliability.
  • Set up, manage, and automate devices using the SmartThings app on Android, iOS, or iPadOS. Works with popular voice assistants, including Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
  • Easy setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet — Set up the hub in minutes using the SmartThings app. Supports both wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Wide compatibility — Certified for Matter, SmartThings, Z-Wave Plus (V3 model only), Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Google Home, and Alexa. Designed for use in North America.
  • For Google Home Matter setup, Google lists Android 8.1 or later with Google Play services 22.48.14 or later, or iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.5 or later. Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher is also required for pairing. See Google’s Matter setup requirements.
  • Apple says Matter support is included in iOS 16.1 and later, but an individual manufacturer may require a newer OS version for its app. See Apple’s Matter support documentation.

Confirm the platform supports the gadget and its features

Look for the relevant compatibility badge on the box or official product listing, then verify the gadget’s category on the platform’s current compatibility page. For Google Home, check for a Matter or Works with Google Home badge and confirm that Google Home supports the device type. Google notes that its list of supported device types can change: Google Home compatibility.

For Alexa, Amazon describes Works with Alexa as its compatibility certification. Check the product listing and Amazon’s Thread documentation for relevant Thread-capable products and compatibility details. A platform badge is a useful starting point, not proof that every feature works in every app; supported categories and features can differ by platform.

Match Wi-Fi or Thread to your network and hubs

Matter devices can use Wi-Fi or Thread. Check which protocol the specific model uses, then confirm that the intended ecosystem has the required network support and hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Wi-Fi: Check the manufacturer’s requirements for your network and the hub or bridge needed for the intended platform.
  • Thread: The intended ecosystem needs a Thread Border Router. Google’s Matter setup guidance lists this as a requirement for Thread devices.
  • Google Home Matter: Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly. Without it, setup may appear to succeed initially, but control and other functions can later fail. Check Google’s network and hub requirements.

Do not assume that one hub covers every ecosystem or transport. Google distinguishes hubs that support Wi-Fi Matter devices from those that also support Thread.

Using the gadget with more than one platform

Matter multi-admin can let you share a device with multiple certified apps, but each platform may have its own setup requirements. Google says each platform app needs its own compatible Matter hub. Before relying on multi-platform control, verify that every platform supports the device type and features you want, and that each has the required hub. See Google’s multi-admin instructions.

A pre-purchase comparison checklist

If you are comparing two gadgets, assess both against the same requirements rather than comparing brand names alone.
