The strongest home-user check is to sign in to the Microsoft account used when the product was redeemed and verify that the Office edition appears under Services & subscriptions with an installation option. Keep the receipt, identify the exact edition and license channel, and treat “lifetime” as a seller’s description rather than a legal entitlement. Transfer rights depend on the product, country, purchase channel and license terms. For current Office 2024 and Office 2021 one-time purchases, Microsoft says the license can generally move to another computer owned by the same license holder no more than once every 90 days, with a hardware-failure exception. That rule does not automatically permit resale or gifting to another person.

What “lifetime Office license” actually tells you
“Lifetime” usually means a one-time purchase rather than a Microsoft 365 subscription that renews monthly or annually. It does not identify the Office edition, whether the software is retail or preinstalled, who owns the entitlement, or whether the seller was authorized to transfer it. The same phrase may be used for a legitimate retail license, an OEM/preinstalled copy tied to one computer, a workplace or volume-license entitlement, or a product key obtained through an unauthorized channel.

Before judging authenticity, record the facts that determine the applicable terms:

- Exact product name and version, such as Office Home & Student 2021, Office Home & Business 2024, or a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Whether it was bought as retail software, supplied with a computer, obtained through an employer or school, or sold under volume licensing.
- Seller name, invoice or receipt, purchase country and the platform on which it was sold.
- Whether the key was unused, already redeemed, or supplied as access to an account.
- Which Microsoft account was used during redemption and whether you still control it.
Microsoft’s transfer guidance and the license terms for the exact edition control the answer. A seller’s “lifetime” label cannot override those terms.
How do I know if my Office license is genuine?
Use the following order. It separates the technical activation check from the ownership and transfer checks that activation alone cannot establish.
1. Identify the purchase and preserve evidence
Save the original invoice, order confirmation, product-card photographs, email correspondence and the seller’s refund policy. Note the product edition, platform (Windows or Mac), region and date. A receipt does not make an unauthorized key legitimate, but without it you may be unable to show where the entitlement came from or request a refund.

For a home purchase with an unused key, use Microsoft’s official setup route at Microsoft’s Office product-key page. Sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the license, enter the key and complete redemption. Do not give the key to a third-party “activation” service.
If Microsoft reports, “This product key has already been used,” the key has already been redeemed and is no longer needed for a second redemption. Microsoft’s instruction is to sign in with the account associated with that redemption and install from the account rather than trying the key again. A used key may be legitimate if you or the original owner redeemed it; it is not, by itself, proof that a marketplace seller had the right to sell it.

3. Confirm the entitlement in Services & subscriptions
Sign in to the same Microsoft account at Microsoft’s account portal and open Services & subscriptions. Look for the exact Office product and an option to install or manage it. The listing should identify the product sufficiently to distinguish a one-time Office purchase from a Microsoft 365 subscription or an employer-managed benefit.
Account association is the practical proof Microsoft uses for many home-product installs and reinstalls. If the seller supplied only a key but the entitlement is attached to an account you do not control, ask the seller for a refund rather than accepting an account takeover arrangement. Never rely on a shared account whose password or recovery methods can be changed by someone else.
4. Check the account shown inside Office
Open Word, Excel or another installed Office application. Select File > Account (called Office Account in some versions) and inspect the account and product information shown there. The account should be the one you intend to retain as the owner.
Microsoft says the complete product key is not displayed in Office and generally is not available online after redemption. The absence of a visible full key is therefore normal; the account association and installation entitlement are the useful checks. Microsoft’s product-key guidance explains this distinction and warns about keys sold separately.
5. Verify installation through Microsoft’s account route
From the product listing in your account, choose the install option and follow Microsoft’s current instructions for your operating system. The installation should download from Microsoft and activate against the signed-in account. Successful installation demonstrates that Microsoft currently recognizes the account’s entitlement. It still does not prove that a reseller originally had permission to transfer a used key, so retain the purchase evidence and review the license channel.
Why activation is not proof that a key was lawfully sold
Activation is a technical state: Microsoft’s servers accepted the key or account at that time. A separately advertised key can be stolen, obtained through abuse, printed on counterfeit labels or cards, issued for an organization rather than an individual, or later blocked. Microsoft specifically warns that a key may work initially and still be unauthorized for resale.
Be especially cautious when an advertisement:
- Sells only a bare key with no verifiable invoice or product channel.
- Promises an unusually low price while claiming “retail” rights but gives no edition, region or platform details.
- Provides Microsoft-branded media or a photograph of a label as the only proof of legitimacy.
- Requires you to use a seller-controlled Microsoft account, remote activation software or a telephone number unrelated to Microsoft.
- Cannot explain whether the license is retail, OEM, workplace, education or volume based.
If the key fails during redemption or later becomes blocked, Microsoft advises contacting the seller and requesting a refund. Do not repeatedly attempt unofficial activation methods or install modified Office files. Those actions can expose your account and computer while doing nothing to establish transfer rights.
Can I transfer Office to a new computer?
For one-time purchases of Office 2024 and Office 2021, Microsoft’s current support guidance says the license holder may move the software to another computer belonging to that same person no more than once every 90 days, except when a hardware failure requires an earlier move. You must remove Office from the old computer and keep no copy there. Microsoft’s wording for a one-time purchase includes products such as Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student and Office Home; it says such a purchase can be installed on only one PC or Mac at a time.

Microsoft’s page, Activate Office after reinstalling or installing on a different device, also points readers to the Software License Terms. Use those terms for the exact product rather than assuming that every version follows the Office 2024/2021 rule.

Safe move procedure
- Sign in to the owning Microsoft account and verify the Office product remains listed under Services & subscriptions.
- On the old computer, sign out of Office applications and uninstall the Office installation. Removing the software is required; deleting a shortcut is not enough.
- On the new computer, download Office from the account’s install option, not from an unofficial mirror.
- Open an Office application, sign in with the owning account and check File > Account.
- If activation fails after a permitted move, use Microsoft’s activation support instructions and provide the purchase record. Do not buy a second key before Microsoft or the seller has addressed the entitlement.
Is a used Office product key transferable to another person?
Moving a license to another computer that you own is different from selling or gifting it to another person. The 90-day rule for Office 2024 and Office 2021 concerns a device belonging to the same license holder; it does not authorize a person-to-person transfer.
Microsoft’s cited support page describes a customer-support process for users in the European Economic Area (EEA) when applicable law permits a transfer to another person. The process involves verification of identity and legitimate license rights. It is geography-specific and does not establish a universal resale right elsewhere. Contact Microsoft Support before handing over a key, account or computer, and ask which terms apply to the exact edition and country.
Do not transfer your entire Microsoft account to a buyer. An account can contain email, files, payment data and other subscriptions. If Microsoft confirms that a person-to-person transfer is permitted, follow the documented process for changing ownership or assigning the entitlement; keep a record of the confirmation and remove your personal data from the device.

Microsoft uses the “Get genuine Office” notice when it has determined that the installed Office copy is not legitimate. The message is not a request to enter the same key repeatedly; it is a warning that the current installation or entitlement has failed Microsoft’s legitimacy checks.
If you bought the copy recently
- Capture the notice, product details and date, and preserve your receipt.
- Contact the seller immediately and request a refund or a legitimate replacement that is tied to your own Microsoft account.
- Do not provide the seller with your Microsoft password or permit remote-control software to “repair” activation.
- Use Microsoft’s genuine-license guidance at Stay safe with a genuine Office license for packaging, certificate-of-authenticity and counterfeit-key warnings.
Remove the suspect installation before reinstalling
Uninstall the counterfeit or unauthorized Office copy before installing a genuine product. Microsoft’s support material explains that its Windows uninstall troubleshooter does not currently uninstall Office 2024. Therefore, use the version-appropriate Microsoft uninstall instructions for your edition instead of assuming that the troubleshooter will remove it.

After removal, restart the computer, sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the legitimate product and install from the account’s official install button. If you cannot verify an entitlement, do not describe the old key as authenticated simply because a new purchase activates.
How to compare two “lifetime” Office offers
Compare entitlement details, not just the advertised key price. Use this checklist while viewing an offer and again after purchase.

A marketplace listing for a new one-time purchase should be checked for the exact edition, platform, seller, region and fulfillment method. Buying a new genuine copy may be a practical replacement when an old entitlement cannot be verified, but it does not authenticate the old key.

Contact Microsoft Support when the product appears in your account but activation fails after an allowed device move, when the edition or channel is unclear, or when a seller claims a person-to-person transfer is permitted. Provide the product name, purchase country, receipt, account email (never the password), error text and the dates of installation or transfer.
Support cannot turn an unauthorized key into a legitimate license. Its role is to clarify the entitlement attached to your account, explain the terms for the exact edition and advise on activation or removal. If the seller refuses a refund for a key Microsoft identifies as blocked or unauthorized, use the payment provider’s dispute process while preserving the listing and correspondence.
Final decision checklist
- The exact Office edition and license channel are known.
- The product is listed in the Microsoft account used for redemption.
- The account remains under your control and shows an installation option.
- File > Account in Office shows the intended owning account.
- You have a receipt and a seller refund route.
- For a device move, the old installation will be removed and the 90-day rule (or hardware-failure exception) has been checked for Office 2024/2021.
- For a transfer to another person, Microsoft’s country-specific terms—particularly the EEA process where applicable—have been confirmed separately.
- Any “Get genuine Office” warning has been addressed by removing the suspect copy and installing through Microsoft’s official account route.
If these checks cannot be satisfied, treat the “lifetime” claim as unverified. Do not rely on activation alone, and do not pass the key to another person until Microsoft’s terms for the exact product and region say that transfer is allowed.
