A magnetic phone cooler fits only when three things line up: the cooler’s attachment method, your phone’s dimensions or magnetic interface, and your case’s construction. Start with the exact cooler model’s compatibility instructions. They will tell you whether it uses direct magnetic attachment, a magnetic plate or sheet, or a clamp. Then verify your phone model or measured width and follow the maker’s case guidance. A cooler that physically sticks to a case is not automatically cooling the phone effectively.
What “magnetic phone cooler” can mean
The name describes a category, not a universal mounting standard. Different coolers use different ways to reach the back of a phone:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Direct magnetic attachment: The cooler is designed to connect to a built-in magnetic ring, such as the MagSafe interface on compatible phones or cases.
- A magnetic plate or sheet: The phone or case receives a plate that gives the cooler something magnetic to attach to. The plate may be supplied with the cooler or may need to be purchased separately.
- A clamp: Spring-loaded arms hold the phone by its sides. This can work with phones that have no magnetic attachment area, provided the phone’s width is within the stated range.
GameSir documents all three approaches for its F9: MagSafe attachment, a magnetic-sheet route and a clip. Razer describes a magnetic setup for MagSafe devices and a clamp range for Android phones. These examples show why the product title alone cannot establish fit.

- Case instructions: Check whether a case is allowed, whether it must contain a compatible magnetic ring and whether the maker recommends removing it.
- Installation requirements: Note alignment instructions, plate placement, charging requirements and any accessories needed for your phone type.
Save or screenshot the instructions before buying if the listing is likely to change. Compatibility is model-specific, so a specification for one cooler cannot be transferred to another.
Match your phone to the stated size or model range
When the manufacturer lists phone models
Use the exact model name and generation, not just the family name. “Android phone,” for example, covers devices with very different widths, camera layouts and back materials. If your model is absent, look for a published measurement range or ask the manufacturer; do not infer compatibility from the phone’s operating system.
When the manufacturer lists a width range
Measure the phone itself at its widest point, excluding a removable case, and compare that measurement with the cooler’s clamp specification. Razer’s Phone Cooler Chroma support information gives an Android clamp range of 67–88 mm. GameSir lists a 65–90 mm range for the F9 clip. Those are product-specific limits, not an industry-wide standard. A phone inside either range can still be unsuitable if its buttons, camera bump or case prevents the arms from seating correctly.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Razer Phone Cooler Chroma | Magnetic setup for MagSafe devices | Android clamp: 67–88 mm (Razer Support, 2026) | Remove the case or attached accessory for optimum cooling and magnetic connection | Android clamp documented; plate inclusion not stated in the cited support guidance |
| GameSir F9 | MagSafe, magnetic sheet and clip pathways | Clip: 65–90 mm (GameSir tutorial; publication date not stated) | GameSir says it cannot be used with a protective cover when seeking the best cooling effect | Magnetic-sheet and clip pathways documented |
| HSR cooler pages | Direct MagSafe fit and magnetic-plate option | Specific width range not stated in the official FAQ | A MagSafe-compatible case may provide some cooling effect; optimal performance is recommended without a case | Included magnetic plates are described in the product FAQ |
| Spigen Magnet Ring Plate | Aftermarket magnetic ring/plate for compatible accessories | Phone-size range not stated on the cited product description | Confirm that your case material and construction are eligible before applying | Adapter accessory; it does not by itself prove cooler compatibility |
Measure with a ruler or caliper if you are near a limit. A nominal dimension from a phone specification sheet may exclude a protruding camera island or may be rounded; the clamp still has to close securely around the real device.
Determine whether the case can stay on
Direct magnetic connection
A direct magnetic cooler needs a magnetic interface in the correct position and with enough holding force. A phone case made for MagSafe may provide that interface, but a generic case does not become compatible merely because it is thin. Check the case manufacturer’s description for an integrated magnetic ring rather than assuming that any metal or magnet in the case will align.

Cooling through a case
Attachment and heat transfer are separate tests. A cooler can remain attached while the case adds distance or insulation that reduces cooling. Razer’s setup instructions state: “Remove your phone case or any attached accessory before using the cooling fan to ensure optimum cooling and magnetic connection.” GameSir’s F9 tutorial answers the case question this way: “Can it be used with phone protection cover? No, it can’t be used with protection cover, considering the best cooling effect.”
The HSR cooler FAQs describe a narrower compromise: a MagSafe-compatible case can provide some cooling effect, but the pages recommend using the cooler without a phone case for optimal performance. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not permission to use every case with every cooler.

Why there is no universal thickness limit
The reviewed manufacturer instructions do not establish one case-thickness cutoff that applies across coolers. Cooling performance depends on the cooler’s contact surface, magnetic strength, plate material, case construction and the phone’s heat path. A case that works with one model may fail to hold another model securely or may leave too much thermal resistance.
A step-by-step fit check before you buy
- Write down the exact cooler model. Include a revision or bundle name if the maker lists one. Open that model’s official setup or compatibility instructions.
- Identify the mounting path you will use. Mark it as direct magnetic, magnetic plate/sheet or clamp. If the cooler supports several paths, choose the one that matches your phone and case rather than assuming all paths perform identically.
- Verify your phone model. Compare the complete model designation with the supported-device list. If the cooler uses a clamp, measure the bare phone’s width and compare it with the published range.
- Inspect the case. Determine whether it has the required magnetic ring, whether it blocks the contact area, and whether the cooler maker allows it. Do not treat a random metal insert as an approved magnetic interface.
- Check accessories and placement. Confirm whether a magnetic sheet or plate is included, where it must be positioned and whether applying it would interfere with wireless charging, buttons or the camera. Follow the maker’s alignment diagram.
- Test attachment without forcing it. Place the cooler as instructed and check that it sits flat, does not rock and cannot slide off with light movement. A strong initial pull does not compensate for a misaligned contact surface.
- Test with the case removed if the maker recommends removal. Compare the cooler’s stability and the phone’s temperature during the same workload. If the manufacturer says the case prevents best cooling, treat case-on use as a compromise rather than the rated setup.
- Check operating requirements. Follow the cooler’s charging and power instructions before evaluating performance. A cooler that is not powered as specified cannot be judged by a short attachment test.
If your phone has no compatible magnetic area
Use the supplied plate or sheet
A plate or sheet can create a magnetic attachment point for a phone without an integrated ring. Confirm that the cooler’s instructions explicitly support that route. Place it exactly where the cooler’s contact area is designed to sit; shifting it for cosmetic reasons can produce poor alignment or an unstable hold.
Use a clamp-compatible cooler
A clamp is often the more predictable option when the phone lacks a magnetic interface or when you do not want to attach adhesive to the case. Compare the bare phone’s width with the stated clamp range, then check that the case does not make the assembly too wide for the arms. The Razer 67–88 mm and GameSir F9 65–90 mm figures illustrate how much these ranges can differ.

Consider an aftermarket ring or plate
A separately purchased ring adapter, such as the type described by Spigen’s Magnet Ring Plate product page, may provide a magnetic target. Before applying one, verify three separate points:
- The cooler manufacturer accepts that style of ring or plate.
- The case material and surface are among the adapter’s permitted materials; the adapter maker lists material exclusions.
- The ring’s position matches the cooler and does not obstruct charging, cameras or other accessories.
An adapter solves only the attachment problem. It does not prove that the cooler will hold through the case, align with the phone’s heat-producing area or deliver the same cooling as direct contact. If the cooler maker recommends removing the case, keep that recommendation even after adding a ring.

The cooler will not stay attached
Recheck the attachment path first. A non-MagSafe case, an incorrectly positioned plate, dirt on the contact surfaces or a case accessory can all prevent a stable connection. Remove the case and accessories, then test the cooler on the bare phone if the instructions permit. If it still slips, the phone may not be supported even if its dimensions look close.
The clamp is too tight or too loose
Measure the phone again at the actual clamping point. Include the case only when deciding whether the cased assembly fits within the published range. Never stretch a clamp beyond its stated limit or rely on a partial grip; pressure on buttons, a camera bump or a curved edge can make the setup unstable.
The cooler attaches but the phone remains hot
Separate mechanical fit from thermal performance. Test without the case when the manufacturer recommends that configuration. Check that the cooler sits flat and is aligned as directed, and make sure it is powered according to the manual. A case-on result may be inherently weaker because the case adds a layer between the cooler and phone.

The plate or ring interferes with other accessories
Move only within the placement area allowed by the cooler and adapter instructions. If the approved position conflicts with wireless charging, a camera module or another accessory, choose a clamp-based cooler or a different case rather than applying the plate arbitrarily.
Decision examples
MagSafe phone with a MagSafe case
Start with a cooler that explicitly supports direct MagSafe attachment. Confirm the case has a compatible magnetic ring and read the case-on cooling guidance. If the maker recommends bare-phone use, remove the case for demanding gaming or other sustained loads and use the cased setup only when the reduced cooling is acceptable.
Android phone with no magnetic ring
Choose between a supported magnetic sheet/plate and a clamp. For a clamp, measure width and compare it with that cooler’s range. For a plate, verify the included accessory, placement instructions and material compatibility of the case. Do not infer that an Android phone fits because another Android model does.
Thick protective case with an adhesive ring
Check the ring maker’s material exclusions and the cooler maker’s case policy before applying anything. The ring may improve magnetic attachment while the case still prevents optimal heat transfer. If the cooler’s instructions require case removal, a clamp or a cooler used on the bare phone is the more defensible choice.

- What is the exact cooler model and attachment method?
- Is my phone listed, or does its measured width fall inside the model’s clamp range?
- Does my case have the required magnetic ring or a surface suitable for the supplied plate?
- Does the manufacturer permit case-on use, and what does it say about cooling quality?
- Will a plate or ring interfere with charging, cameras or other accessories?
- What alignment and power instructions must I follow for the cooler to work as intended?
Bottom line
Confirm fit in this order: cooler attachment method, phone model or measured width, case compatibility, then alignment and cooling guidance. Razer’s 67–88 mm Android clamp range and GameSir F9’s 65–90 mm clip range demonstrate why dimensions are model-specific. A magnetic ring or plate can create an attachment point, but it cannot guarantee case-on cooling or universal compatibility. When the manufacturer says to remove the case for the best connection or cooling, that is the setup to use for the cooler’s rated performance.
