How to Check Whether a Magic: The Gathering Card Is Banned in Your Format

To check a Magic: The Gathering card, identify the exact format and play mode first, then consult Wizards of the Coast’s live Banned & Restricted Lists page for that format. A card’s status is not universal: Wizards notes that “a card that is banned in Modern may still be legal to play in Standard.” If the card appears as banned, you cannot use it in that format’s deck or sideboard. If it appears as restricted, you may use only one copy combined across your main deck and sideboard.

Check the live list shortly before an event or match. Banned, restricted, suspended, and commander-only entries can have different effects, and digital modes such as MTG Arena Best-of-One may have additional rules. At the October 14, 2026 reference point, the latest dated announcement was published October 12, 2026; it reported no changes for Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, or Brawl, while listing Competitive Brawl changes effective October 12.

Why the format must come first

Magic does not have one universal banned-card list. Each Constructed format defines its own card pool, deck-construction rules, and restrictions. A ban in one format does not automatically apply elsewhere. For example, a card banned in Modern can still be legal in Standard if it is in Standard’s eligible card pool and is not separately listed there.

Write down both the format and the way you will play it before checking a card. “Commander” and “Brawl” are not interchangeable, and tabletop play is not always governed by the same entries as a digital platform. Examples of details that can change the answer include:

  • MTG Arena formats such as Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, or Arena Best-of-One.
  • A dated event rule, suspension, or effective date that has not yet taken effect.

Wizards’ Banned & Restricted Lists are for Constructed formats. They are not the legality reference for Limited formats such as Draft or Sealed. Limited events instead use the cards opened or supplied for that event, together with the event’s card-pool and deck-building rules.

The official five-step check

1. Name the exact format and play mode

Record the format exactly as it appears in the event, client, or tournament information. If you are playing on MTG Arena, record the format and whether the match is Best-of-One or a mode with sideboards. If you are playing Commander, determine whether the relevant rule is the ordinary Commander list, Brawl, or Competitive Brawl.

Do not use a search result for “MTG banned cards” without confirming which format it describes. A page that is accurate for Modern may be irrelevant to Standard, and a tabletop list may not answer an Arena-specific question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open Wizards’ current Banned & Restricted Lists page

Use the live official page rather than an undated article, forum post, deck database, or search snippet. The page groups entries by format. Select the section matching the format and mode you wrote down in step one.

The live page is the controlling reference for a current deck check. Dated announcements are useful for understanding when a change was announced and when it becomes effective, but they can become stale after a later update.

3. Search the exact card name in that format’s section

Use the card’s complete printed name, including punctuation where relevant. Check the entry inside the correct format section, not merely anywhere on the page. If the card appears under that section’s banned list, it cannot be included in the deck or sideboard for that format.

If it appears under a restricted list, count copies across the entire deck registration: the main deck plus the sideboard. Wizards’ rule is one copy total, not one copy in each portion. If the card does not appear in the section, continue to step four rather than treating absence as automatic permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Read qualifiers, exceptions, and effective dates

Some entries are narrower than a simple “legal” or “illegal” label. Read the wording attached to the card and the heading above it. Look for:

  • Mode limits: an Arena Best-of-One restriction may not apply to a mode with a sideboard.
  • Suspension language: a suspended card is unavailable under the format’s stated suspension rule, even if the page does not use the ordinary banned heading.
  • Commander-only language: a Competitive Brawl entry can prohibit a card as a commander while treating it differently in the deck.
  • Effective dates: a change announced for a future date does not govern matches played before that date, while a change already effective does.

Read the complete entry instead of relying on the card name alone. The scope is part of the rule.

5. Recheck immediately before playing

Check the live list again before submitting a deck, starting a league, or joining an event. Banned and restricted lists can change after you first built the deck. Keep the announcement date and effective date only as context; use the current format section for the final answer.

What each status means

Status Practical deck consequence What to verify
Banned Zero copies in the deck and sideboard for that format. Confirm that the entry belongs to your exact format and read any mode or date qualifier.
Restricted One copy total across the main deck and sideboard. Count the combined registration, not each section separately. Wizards says Vintage is currently the only format with a restricted list.
Suspended Unavailable under the format’s suspension rule for the period stated by Wizards. Read the suspension notice and its effective dates; do not assume suspension is permanent.
Commander-only ban The card cannot be used in the prohibited commander role, while the entry may not prohibit every use in the deck. Check whether the heading is Competitive Brawl, Brawl, or another commander-specific section.
Not listed No ban or restriction is shown in that list section. Verify card-pool eligibility, rotation, rarity, color identity, copy limits, and other format rules.

A restricted card is not “mostly banned.” It is legal at the stated one-copy limit. Conversely, a card missing from a banned list is not automatically playable in every deck: a format may exclude its set, require a particular rarity, impose color-identity rules, or limit commanders and companions through separate rules.

Constructed versus Limited legality

Constructed formats

Use the Banned & Restricted Lists for formats in which you register a constructed deck, such as Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, Brawl, or Commander-related formats. The list tells you whether a specific card is banned, restricted, suspended, or subject to a special qualifier in that format.

Limited formats

Draft and Sealed are not governed by the Constructed Banned & Restricted Lists in the same way. Your legal pool is determined by the cards opened or supplied and by the event’s Limited rules. A card being banned in Modern does not by itself remove it from a Draft or Sealed pool. Ask the event organizer or consult the event rules for unusual Limited restrictions.

Tabletop and digital checks are not interchangeable

Separate the physical format from the platform and mode. A tabletop Standard question should be answered from the Standard section, not from an Arena-only entry. Likewise, an Arena Best-of-One restriction can be relevant even when the same card has a different status in a sideboard-based mode.

The official page includes separate categories and mode-specific entries. When the page identifies a card as restricted, suspended, or banned only for a particular digital mode, preserve that qualification in your deck decision. Do not generalize a digital restriction to tabletop play or a tabletop ban to every digital queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to handle announcements and effective dates

Announcements explain changes; the live list determines what you can register now. Compare the announcement’s publication date with its effective date and with the date of your match.

At the October 14, 2026 reference point, the latest linked announcement was Wizards’ October 12, 2026 Banned and Restricted Announcement. It reported no changes for Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Alchemy, Historic, Timeless, and Brawl. It also reported Competitive Brawl changes effective October 12, including cards newly banned as commanders and cards whose restriction changed to commander-only. Those details are time-sensitive, so use the current list rather than treating the October announcement as a permanent snapshot.

If a tournament begins after a published effective date, apply the new rule even if you built the deck under the previous one. If the event begins before the effective date, follow the event organizer’s stated policy and the rules in force at that time.

What “not listed” does and does not tell you

Not finding a card under a format’s ban or restriction heading answers only one question: the card is not shown there as banned or restricted. You must still check the format’s other eligibility rules.

  • Card pool: the card may come from a set that the format does not allow.
  • Rotation: a card can leave Standard without being banned.
  • Rarity or type: Pauper and other formats can impose requirements beyond the ban list.
  • Deck construction: copy limits, color identity, commander rules, companion requirements, and sideboard rules still apply.
  • Platform availability: a physical card may not exist in the digital card pool, or a digital format may use a separate suspension or restriction.

For that reason, a complete legality check combines the ban-list result with the format’s general rules and the event’s deck-registration instructions.

A quick decision tree

You can reduce the check to four questions:

  1. Which exact format and mode? If you cannot answer this, stop and get the event or client name first.
  2. Is the card named in that section? If yes, identify whether the heading says banned, restricted, suspended, or commander-only.
  3. What is the scope? Apply the rule to the main deck, sideboard, commander slot, Best-of-One queue, or other role specified in the entry.
  4. Is the rule effective now? Match the effective date to the date and start time of your event, then check the live list again.

This prevents a common error: finding a card somewhere on Wizards’ page and treating that discovery as a universal answer. The section heading and qualifier are as important as the card name.

Card-name and deck-registration pitfalls

Search for the exact card name rather than a nickname, set code, collector number, or the name of a related card. If a card has multiple printings, its format status follows the named card and the format’s eligibility rules, not the artwork you happen to own. Confirm that the entry you found matches the card you intend to register.

When a rule says one copy across the main deck and sideboard, count every registered copy before submitting. Do not count only cards currently in the main deck, and do not assume a digital client’s deck screen will explain a special commander or Best-of-One qualifier. If the client and the official page appear to disagree, pause and check the exact mode, list heading, and effective date; then ask the organizer or platform support before the event starts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a list, announcement, and event notice differ

A dated announcement records a change at a particular moment. A later live list may incorporate that change or supersede it. An event notice can also specify how a tournament handles a change that takes effect near registration or deck submission. Use the live official list for the current status, compare dates carefully, and follow a clearly stated event policy for that event.

Save the card name, format, mode, date checked, and the wording of any qualifier when you are preparing a high-stakes registration. This small record makes it easier to explain a deck choice to a judge or organizer and to repeat the check if a list changes.

Worked examples

A card banned in Modern

Select Modern and search the card in the Modern section. If it is listed as banned, register zero copies in both the Modern main deck and sideboard. Do not conclude that the card is banned in Standard; perform a separate Standard check and verify that the card is in Standard’s eligible card pool.

A restricted card in Vintage

Select Vintage and search the card under the restricted heading. You may register one copy total across the main deck and sideboard. A second copy in the sideboard would violate the limit even if the main deck contains only one.

A Competitive Brawl commander entry

Select Competitive Brawl and read whether the card is prohibited as a commander or has a different restriction in the deck. A commander-only entry does not automatically mean that every copy in the 99-card deck is forbidden. Follow the exact wording of the Competitive Brawl section.

An Arena Best-of-One restriction

Select the relevant Arena format and Best-of-One mode. If the entry is limited to Best-of-One, apply it to that queue rather than assuming the same restriction governs a mode that uses a sideboard. Check the current digital list immediately before playing.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Using the wrong format list

Symptom: You find the card on a list but cannot tell whether your deck is illegal. Fix: return to step one, write the exact format and mode, and search only that section.

Calling every restriction a ban

Symptom: You remove all copies after seeing the word “restricted.” Fix: determine whether the rule is one-copy total, a suspension, or a commander-only prohibition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting only the main deck

Symptom: A Vintage list has one copy in the main deck and another in the sideboard. Fix: count the combined main deck and sideboard; a restricted card is limited to one total copy.

Trusting an old article

Symptom: A deck guide conflicts with the current event software or official list. Fix: use the live Wizards list, then read the dated announcement to understand when the change took effect.

Assuming absence proves legality

Symptom: The card is not listed, so you add it without checking anything else. Fix: verify card-pool eligibility, rotation, rarity, commander rules, and platform availability.

Event-day checklist

  1. Write the exact format, platform, and mode.
  2. Open the live Wizards Banned & Restricted Lists page.
  3. Select the matching format section.
  4. Search the complete card name.
  5. Read the heading and every qualifier attached to the entry.
  6. For a banned card, remove all copies from the deck and sideboard.
  7. For a restricted card, count no more than one copy across both.
  8. Check suspensions, commander-only rules, Best-of-One conditions, and effective dates.
  9. Verify non-ban legality such as card pool, rotation, rarity, color identity, and copy limits.
  10. Repeat the check shortly before deck submission or the match.

Bottom line

The reliable answer to “Is this Magic card banned in my format?” comes from the exact format section of Wizards’ current Banned & Restricted Lists page. Format, platform, mode, status type, and effective date all matter. Banned means zero copies in the deck and sideboard; restricted means one combined copy where that format uses a restricted list. If the card is not listed, complete the separate card-pool and deck-building checks before registering it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the official MTG banned list?

Use Wizards of the Coast’s current Banned & Restricted Lists page. Choose the section for the exact format and mode you will play, then search the complete card name.

Does a Modern ban mean the card is banned in Standard?

No. Lists are format-specific. A card banned in Modern may still be legal in Standard if it belongs to Standard’s card pool and is not separately listed there.

How many copies of a restricted card can I play?

One copy total across the main deck and sideboard in a format that uses a restricted list. Wizards currently identifies Vintage as the format with a restricted list.

What if a card is not on the banned list?

Absence means only that the card is not shown there as banned or restricted. Check card-pool eligibility, rotation, rarity, color identity, copy limits, commander rules, platform availability, and other deck-construction requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are suspended cards the same as banned cards?

Not necessarily. Suspension is a separate status with its own wording and effective period. Read the suspension notice and dates rather than assuming it is permanent or identical to a ban.

Can I use a Competitive Brawl card in the deck if it is banned as a commander?

Possibly, depending on the exact entry. A commander-only prohibition can bar the card from the commander role without automatically forbidding every use in the deck. Follow the Competitive Brawl wording.

Do Arena Best-of-One restrictions apply to tabletop Magic?

No automatic generalization is safe. A Best-of-One entry may apply only to that digital queue. Check the relevant Arena format section and do not transfer the restriction to tabletop play or another mode without an applicable entry.

When should I check the list?

Check when building the deck and again shortly before submitting it or playing. Compare any dated announcement’s effective date with the date of your match, and use the live list for the final status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact format and mode, read that section of Wizards’ live Banned & Restricted Lists page, and apply the entry’s full wording. Banned means zero copies in the deck and sideboard; restricted means one combined copy. Suspensions, commander-only bans, Best-of-One qualifiers, effective dates, and ordinary card-pool rules can change the result.
