The reliable way to answer this is to measure your laptop, not trust the 100% icon or a manufacturer’s headline runtime. Check the battery’s current full-charge capacity, record how quickly it drains during the work you actually do, and compare that measured rate with the hours you need away from an outlet. A battery showing 100% may already hold substantially less energy than when new, while a lightly used laptop can last longer than its capacity percentage suggests.
This guide shows the built-in checks in Windows 11 and macOS, a repeatable workday test, the calculations behind a realistic estimate, and what to do when the result is too short.

What you need to measure
Three pieces of information turn a vague battery-life question into a useful estimate:

- Observed drain: how much charge or energy your normal work consumes per hour.
- Required time: the number of hours you must work before you can reliably reach a charger.
The percentage beside the battery icon is only the current state of charge. It does not tell you the battery’s original design capacity, its present maximum capacity, or your laptop’s power draw. Capacity also changes with age, temperature, charging behavior and battery condition.

A useful estimate is:
Estimated remaining hours ≈ usable charge remaining ÷ average charge used per hour
For example, if a representative work session shows an average drain of 12% per hour and you begin with 90% available, the simple percentage estimate is 7.5 hours. Treat that as an estimate, not a promise: workload, brightness, refresh rate, network conditions and background activity can change the rate.
Check a Windows 11 laptop
Generate the built-in battery report
- Save your work and open Command Prompt as an administrator. Search for “Command Prompt,” right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Windows creates an HTML report and prints its file location. Open that file in a browser.
Microsoft documents this command in Caring for your battery in Windows. If Windows reports a different path, use the location shown in the command window rather than guessing.
Read Installed battery
Start with the report’s Installed battery section. It normally lists:
- Design capacity: the watt-hours the battery was intended to hold when new.
- Full-charge capacity: the watt-hours the battery can hold at a full charge now, if Windows has a value available.
Calculate a capacity ratio:
Full-charge capacity ÷ design capacity × 100 = approximate remaining capacity percentage
This is a capacity comparison, not a runtime score. Microsoft’s illustrative example uses a 70 Wh design capacity and 50% maximum capacity, producing 35 Wh at a full charge now. That example explains the arithmetic; it is not a measurement of your laptop.
A high ratio can still produce a short day if the computer draws power quickly. A lower ratio may remain practical when the original battery was large and your workload is light. Do not use a single percentage as an automatic replacement rule.

Check Recent usage and Battery usage
Recent usage shows charge and activity over the report’s available history. Look for a period that resembles a normal day rather than a night spent idle or asleep. Battery usage helps reveal how the charge was consumed and whether the record includes the apps and hours you care about.
In Windows, also open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Review the apps with the largest reported drain. The list is a troubleshooting clue, not a laboratory measurement: a video meeting, a browser with many active tabs and a background synchronization job can all change the next hour’s result.
Check a Mac laptop
Review Battery Usage History
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.
- Open Battery Usage History.
- Switch between the available views for the previous 24 hours or 10 days.
Apple says these views include battery level, energy usage and screen-on usage. The 24-hour view is useful for a recent work session; the 10-day view can expose patterns that a single day misses. Details and labels can vary slightly by macOS version.
Use Apple’s instructions at View Battery Usage History on a Mac laptop if the history screen is not where you expect it.
Find the cycle count
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Hardware > Power.
- Read Cycle Count and the battery information shown for your model.
Apple explains the procedure in Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops. A cycle represents cumulative use equivalent to 100% of the battery’s capacity; it does not necessarily mean one uninterrupted discharge from 100% to 0%. Cycle count is condition context, not a direct prediction of today’s runtime.
Apple states that its batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original charge capacity at their maximum cycle count. The maximum cycle count varies by Mac model, so use the limit for your exact model. This is Apple’s design guidance, not a universal health cutoff for every laptop battery.
Run a representative workday test
Operating-system history is most useful when it contains the work you actually do. A controlled test is more informative than an idle percentage reading.

Define the work pattern
Write down the apps, activities and conditions that make up a typical day. Examples include writing and web research, local documents, code compilation, spreadsheets, video meetings, screen sharing, external displays, music streaming and cloud synchronization. Note whether you normally use Wi-Fi or mobile networking, headphones, a webcam and a high-brightness or high-refresh-rate display.

Do not test only the easiest part of the day if the demanding part is what determines whether you reach a charger. Microsoft notes that activity inside the same app can have very different power requirements: a Teams chat is not equivalent to an audio/video meeting with screen sharing.
Standardize the starting conditions
- Charge to the level at which you normally leave home, preferably 100% when testing maximum available time.
- Disconnect the charger and record the start time and battery percentage.
- Use the display brightness, refresh rate, power mode, peripherals and network connection you normally use.
- Close only apps you would not normally run. Do not create an unrealistically clean test environment.
If your work changes sharply between morning writing and afternoon meetings, test those blocks separately and combine them according to the time each occupies.
Record the drain
- Work continuously for a meaningful interval, such as a full meeting block or several hours of normal tasks.
- Record the ending time and battery percentage. Note sleep, charging, interruptions or unusual activity.
- Calculate percentage points lost per hour:
(starting percentage − ending percentage) ÷ elapsed hours. - Repeat on another representative day if the first session included unusual software, updates or travel conditions.
A brief 10-minute idle observation is not a substitute for a work session. It can hide the power used by calls, compiling, graphics acceleration, external monitors or a busy browser.
Convert the observation into time you can use
Percentage-based estimate
If the battery falls from 88% to 64% during a two-hour work block, the observed rate is 12 percentage points per hour. Starting another session at 90% would therefore suggest roughly 7.5 hours before reaching 0%, assuming the same conditions. Add a practical reserve rather than planning to work until shutdown; low-battery warnings and performance changes reduce the useful margin.
This method is easy but becomes less informative when the battery gauge is poorly calibrated, capacity has degraded substantially or the recorded history is sparse.
Energy-based estimate
When the battery report provides current full-charge capacity, use watt-hours instead of treating every percentage point as identical. A 50% charge in a healthy 70 Wh battery represents about 35 Wh remaining; the same percentage in a worn 40 Wh battery represents about 20 Wh. If your observed workload consumes an average number of watts, divide usable watt-hours by watts to estimate hours.

Operating systems do not always expose a perfectly stable energy reading, and the battery’s usable energy changes with temperature, age and load. Use the average over a representative block rather than a single instantaneous figure.
Compare with your requirement

Find and reduce avoidable drain
Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance for Windows identifies several controls that can change runtime. Availability depends on the laptop’s hardware and manufacturer firmware.

- Brightness: reduce it to the lowest comfortable level, particularly on bright high-resolution panels.
- Refresh rate: select a lower rate when smooth motion is not needed.
- Graphics choice: use an efficient graphics option rather than a high-performance discrete GPU for ordinary office work, when the laptop provides that choice.
- Background activity: limit apps that synchronize, index, render or stay active when you are not using them.
- Power mode: choose the more efficient mode when peak performance is unnecessary.
- App usage: inspect Windows’ per-app battery view and test the suspected app under the task that causes the drain.
Change one category at a time and repeat the same work block. Otherwise you will know that runtime changed but not which setting caused it. Do not disable security updates, essential synchronization or accessibility features merely to improve a battery graph.
How to compare two laptops fairly
Advertised runtime figures use particular test scripts and settings. They are useful for broad specification research but do not replace a workload test. Compare devices on the same axes:

A laptop with a larger battery is not automatically the better choice if its processor, graphics system or display consumes more power during your work. Conversely, a smaller battery can be adequate when the computer draws less and your tasks are light.

Short runtime can result from either reduced capacity or unusually high consumption. A battery report with a large gap between design and full-charge capacity points toward aging. A normal capacity ratio with rapid drain points more toward workload, settings, a peripheral or a software process.

For a Mac, cycle count should be interpreted against the exact model’s limit. Apple recommends replacement at the maximum cycle count to maintain performance, while its “up to 80%” statement describes battery design behavior rather than a guarantee of a particular day’s runtime.
If the battery is swollen, unusually hot, physically damaged or causing the case or trackpad to lift, stop using and charging the laptop and follow the manufacturer’s safety and service instructions. Do not install a generic replacement: the replacement must match the exact laptop model and use the maker’s approved procedure or an authorized service provider.
Use a USB-C power bank only after checking compatibility
A USB-C laptop power bank with USB Power Delivery (USB PD) can extend a work session when the laptop supports charging over USB-C. The connector shape alone does not prove that USB PD charging is supported.

For a Mac that charges by USB-C, Apple says a USB-C power source supporting USB PD can charge the laptop and recommends at least the model’s minimum recommended wattage for the best experience. Apple warns that insufficient wattage can produce a Slow Charger status. See Use a power adapter with your Mac and Charge your Mac laptop computer.
For Windows and other laptops, check the laptop’s own charging documentation for USB-C charging support, required wattage and any proprietary limitations. A power bank’s advertised capacity is not the same as energy delivered to the laptop: conversion losses, output limits and the laptop’s draw determine the extra time. Without those values, no responsible fixed number of added hours can be promised.
Enterprise and longer-term diagnostics
Organizations using Microsoft Endpoint analytics may see an App Impact report summarizing cumulative battery use per app over the last 14 days. Microsoft describes this in Battery Health Report in Endpoint Analytics. That reporting window helps identify recurring app impact across managed devices; it is not a consumer runtime recommendation and does not replace a test of your own workday.
For an individual laptop, the built-in Windows and macOS reports provide the principal checks needed for this decision. Third-party diagnostic software is not required to calculate a practical workday estimate.

A repeatable checklist
- Record the hours you must work away from an outlet and keep a reserve for delays.
- On Windows, run
powercfg /batteryreport; on Mac, inspect Battery Usage History and the model-specific cycle count. - Write down current full-charge capacity and design capacity when available.
- List the apps, meetings, displays, brightness, refresh rate and network conditions in a typical day.
- Run that workload from a known starting charge and record elapsed time and charge used.
- Calculate average drain per hour and estimate whether the required hours fit with reserve.
- If the result is short, identify high-drain apps and test one efficient setting change at a time.
- If capacity is degraded or the battery is physically unsafe, use model-specific service guidance rather than a generic replacement.
- If you need an accessory, verify USB-C PD support and the laptop’s required wattage before choosing a power bank.
