Check the exact game’s current PC listing, copy its minimum and recommended requirements, then compare every field with your own Windows version, processor, graphics card, memory, storage, and graphics API support. A PC that reaches the minimum tier meets the publisher’s baseline, not a guaranteed frame rate or image quality. The recommended tier and its resolution, preset, and frame-rate notes are the better guide to the experience you want. Steam Deck and Linux compatibility must be checked separately because a Deck badge describes Valve’s review of that device, not certification for every Windows computer.
What a PC requirement actually tells you
A requirement list is a compatibility boundary for one title and one platform version. JRPG is a genre, not a hardware specification: a turn-based 2D game, an open-world action RPG, and a remastered console port can have very different demands. Do not use a requirement list from another entry in a series, a console edition, or an older store page as a substitute for the current PC listing.

Most listings provide two tiers:
- Minimum: the publisher’s stated baseline for launching and running the game under the conditions it specifies. It is not automatically a promise of 60 frames per second, high settings, or 1080p.
- Recommended: the publisher’s higher target. Notes may attach this tier to a particular resolution, graphics preset, and frame rate.
Passing one line does not make a computer a match. A machine can have enough RAM but an unsupported operating system, a suitable processor but a weaker graphics card, or enough free space but no DirectX feature level the game needs. Treat the comparison as an all-fields check.

Start at the game’s official publisher support page or its current PC storefront listing. Verify the platform and edition: Windows Steam, another Windows storefront, a remaster, a bundle, and a demo can have different requirements. Store pages can also be updated after launch, so record the date you checked.

- Search for the game’s official PC or Steam page, not a generic “best JRPGs” page.
- Confirm the title, edition, platform, and 32-bit or 64-bit operating-system requirement.
- Open any expandable “system requirements,” “additional notes,” or support sections.
- Copy the minimum and recommended operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX or other API, storage, and network requirements exactly as written.
- Capture qualifiers such as “at 1280×720,” “Lowest,” “Standard,” “30 fps,” or “60 fps.” Those conditions are part of the requirement.
Do not silently merge data from different versions. If a publisher support page and a storefront disagree, identify which one applies to the edition you intend to buy and treat the discrepancy as a reason to check for a patch note or an updated support article.
2. Record the requirements in a comparison table
Put the game’s data beside your computer’s data before deciding. This prevents a strong result in one category from hiding a failure in another.

Write “not stated” for a field the listing does not provide. An omitted value is not evidence that the requirement is zero.

3. Check your Windows PC without guessing
Operating system and architecture
- Open Settings and choose System > About.
- Read Windows specifications for the edition and version.
- Read Device specifications > System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not interchangeable if the listing names only one. A 64-bit game generally requires 64-bit Windows; a 32-bit installation is a mismatch even when the hardware itself is modern.
Processor and installed memory
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Copy the complete processor name from Processor.
- Copy the installed amount from Installed RAM.
For a live view, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect CPU and Memory. Use the model number, not the marketing family alone. “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5,” or “gaming laptop” covers many generations with materially different performance.
Graphics processor and video memory
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to see the active display adapter, or open Task Manager and choose Performance > GPU.
- Record the full GPU model. If the PC has integrated and dedicated graphics, record both.
- In Task Manager, note dedicated GPU memory and shared GPU memory separately.
A laptop may switch between integrated and dedicated graphics. The model that actually runs the game matters, and a listing’s VRAM requirement applies to dedicated video memory unless it explicitly says otherwise.

DirectX and drivers
- Press Windows+R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. - On the System tab, check the DirectX version.
- On the Display tab, record the adapter and driver date.
The DirectX number alone is not the whole story: games can require features exposed by a particular GPU architecture or driver. Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer and reboot before judging a borderline result.
Free storage
Open File Explorer > This PC and check the free space on the drive where the game will be installed. The requirement is free capacity, not the drive’s total size. Leave additional headroom for updates, shader caches, and the operating system; a drive that barely clears the listed number can fail during installation or patching.
4. Compare every field, in the right order
Operating system first
If your Windows edition, architecture, or required service level is unsupported, treat that as a blocker until the operating system is updated. Do not compensate for an OS mismatch with a faster GPU.
CPU next
Compare exact processor models or a reliable model-to-model comparison. Core counts and clock speeds alone can mislead because architecture and instruction support differ. If your model is below the minimum named by the publisher, expect launch or performance problems even if the GPU is stronger.
GPU and VRAM
Graphics hardware is often the largest determinant of resolution and settings. Compare the exact model and any stated VRAM requirement. Integrated graphics can share system memory, but that does not make them equivalent to a dedicated GPU with the same nominal memory amount.

Installed RAM must meet the listed amount, and the computer needs enough left for Windows and background software. Close browsers, launchers, overlays, and recording tools when testing a near-minimum machine. This improves available memory but does not turn an underpowered CPU or GPU into a recommended system.

DirectX or another API
Confirm that the OS, GPU, and driver support the API named by the game. A DirectX 12 listing does not mean every card that can install a DirectX 12 runtime supports the required hardware features.
Storage and network
Clear the required free space on the installation drive. If the listing requires an online connection, account, or launcher, include that in the purchase decision even if the single-player campaign itself is offline after setup.
5. Interpret minimum and recommended notes correctly
Performance notes are more useful than the component names alone. For example, the BLUE REFLECTION Quartet Steam page describes its minimum tier as expected to deliver 30 fps at 1280×720 on the Lowest preset, while its recommended tier is expected to deliver 60 fps at 1920×1080 on the Standard preset. Those statements define two different experiences: a machine that meets minimum is not automatically a 1080p/60 system.

Use this decision rule:
- Below minimum in any field: consider the game unsupported for your intended purchase unless the publisher documents a specific workaround. You may be able to launch it, but the published baseline is not met.
- Meets minimum but not recommended: expect to target the minimum notes—often lower resolution, a lower preset, or a lower frame rate—and adjust expectations for demanding scenes.
- Meets recommended in every field: you match the publisher’s higher target under its stated conditions. This still is not a guarantee for every driver, patch, background task, or display resolution.
Never convert “recommended” into “maximum settings.” Publishers may define recommended around a Standard preset rather than Ultra, and a game can offer settings above that tier.
6. Use published examples without generalizing them
Square Enix support example
A Square Enix support article for one PC Steam game lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, a Ryzen 3 1200 or Core i3-6100 processor, 8 GB of RAM, an RX 460 or GTX 750 graphics card, DirectX 12, and 10 GB of storage as minimum requirements. It gives a different recommended GPU and ties that recommendation to its own title-specific performance information. These numbers illustrate how to read a listing; they are not baseline requirements for JRPGs as a category.
BLUE REFLECTION Quartet example
The BLUE REFLECTION Quartet Steam listing includes operating system, CPU, GPU, memory, DirectX, network, and storage fields, then attaches resolution, preset, and frame-rate expectations to its minimum and recommended tiers. When you inspect another game, look for the same kind of notes rather than copying these values.

7. Steam Deck and Linux are a separate compatibility check
A Windows comparison cannot answer whether a game works well on Steam Deck. Valve’s categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The review considers controller input, display and text legibility, seamless operation, system support, and performance on the Deck. A badge describes that device-specific review, not a certification for an arbitrary Windows desktop or laptop.
Check the Deck badge
- Open the game’s Steam page or Steam library entry on the Deck.
- Read the category and the detailed compatibility notes, not only the colored badge.
- Check for small text, launcher steps, keyboard prompts, cut-scene issues, or settings you must change.
“Playable” can mean that the game works after a manual adjustment; “Verified” means it met Valve’s criteria in the reviewed configuration. “Unknown” means there is no completed rating, not that the game is broken.
Understand Proton
Games without native Linux builds may run through Proton, the compatibility layer used by SteamOS. Proton behavior depends on the game, Proton version, drivers, patches, and Deck firmware. A Windows system-requirements match does not prove that a Proton installation will work.
Use ProtonDB as supplementary evidence
ProtonDB contains community-reported Linux and Deck experiences for individual titles. Read several recent reports, noting the hardware, Proton version, launch options, frame-rate expectations, and problems. Community reports are useful clues, not guarantees for every machine and not a replacement for comparing the game’s published Windows requirements.
8. Make a purchase decision with a simple risk matrix

Common mistakes and how to recover
Using the wrong edition
Remasters, deluxe editions, demos, and ports can change requirements. Return to the exact store page for the edition in your cart and rebuild the table.
Comparing brand families instead of models
Replace “Ryzen 5,” “GeForce GTX,” or “Radeon RX” with the complete model number. If the listing names two alternatives, compare your model against both on architecture and performance, not branding alone.
Ignoring resolution and preset notes
A minimum tier tied to 720p/Lowest cannot be presented as evidence for 1080p/High. Set your target resolution and preset first, then choose the corresponding tier.
Checking total disk size instead of free space
Use the free-space figure for the installation drive and leave room for updates. Move or uninstall files before purchase if the drive is close to full.
Assuming a Deck badge covers Windows
Read the badge as a Deck-specific result. Perform the Windows comparison independently on a desktop or laptop.
Treating a community report as a guarantee
ProtonDB entries are user experiences under particular configurations. Look for patterns across recent reports and keep the game’s refund rules in mind, but do not treat one successful report as proof for your hardware.
A reusable pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact PC edition and open its current official listing.
- Record minimum and recommended OS, architecture, CPU, GPU, RAM, API, storage, and network requirements.
- Copy every resolution, preset, and frame-rate note attached to each tier.
- Check your Windows version and 64-bit status in Settings > System > About.
- Record the full CPU, RAM amount, GPU model, VRAM, DirectX version, driver status, and free storage.
- Compare all fields, marking any mismatch instead of relying on an overall impression.
- Choose a tier that matches the experience you actually want, not merely the ability to launch.
- If using Steam Deck or Linux, check the separate Steam compatibility category and read its notes.
- Use ProtonDB reports only as additional, configuration-specific evidence.
- Save the listing and your comparison table so you can recheck after a major patch or hardware change.
Bottom line
The reliable answer comes from a title-specific, field-by-field comparison. Meet the minimum tier only when its documented resolution, preset, and frame-rate target is acceptable to you; use the recommended tier for the publisher’s higher target. Keep Windows, Steam Deck, and Linux assessments separate, and treat every badge or community report as evidence for the configuration it actually covers.
